Watching people speedrun games is a nice thing to do when you are caring for an infant and since it was going all day long, if I had to be up at 3am I could turn it on. There were so many incredible runs but I wanted to showcase a couple I liked the most.

Wolfenstein: The New Order

Blood_Thunder did a particularlly impressive speedrun of Wolfenstein: The New Order linked above. This one features a very fun prank he pulled on the audience and SGDQ itself which was hilarious to experience live. I also donated during this stream so watch it for a special Cheerful Ghost shoutout! Woooo!

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

One of the more impressive things I watched was Romscout running Castlevania: Symphony of the Night completely blindfolded! At one point in the stream he gets confused and gets a bit of help but he completely beats the game blindfolded! He progressed based entirely on muscle memory and sound queues.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0H4atoATpNE

Fallout 4

BubblesDelFuego ran Fallout 4 in 1:05:09 marking the first year Fallout 4 was run at a Games Done Quick event. On the couch supporting him was the speedrunner for Skyrim and also Blood_Thunder that ran Fallout 4. There is much cross pollination between runners of Bethesda games as they often utilize a common engine so methods and glitches can be shared among games.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0G3inB7txQ4

Diablo 2

MrLlamaSC runs everyones favorite demon murder simulator in 1:44:51. I shared one of his runs before because I love this game so much I can't stop myself. It's not quite the same run from last year and he runs it with a Druid, so you should check this out as it plays out very differently than before even though some of the main run points are similar.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4mA3W2m20o

Super Metroid Race

The Super Metroid Race between oatsngoats, sweetnumb, zoast & Behemoth87 was one of the last runs of the event and a total nail biter. I was absolutely floored with how it ended making for one of the more intense runs i've seen. I don't want to spoil it but as i've said, it ends differently that you would expect. Since they all decided on a run that favored time and was much more difficult it made for some really crazy moments you need to experience.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFI0a-uMD_U

Super Mario RPG

Super Mario RPG is on my list of shame yet I really enjoyed this run because the game seems really good and also a very hard game to run. Firstly, am I supposed to beat the game on Uber to get a more complete ending? If not, are we to presume that B.J. dies, or does the sound of the helicopter after the credits imply that he was rescued? Secondly, and more importantly, I totally thought the whole thing was going to be some dream or hallucination, due to the events that happened shortly after the Nazis "shut down" the asylum at the beginning of the game. When you are running around in your hospital gown, killing lots of Nazis, the colors on the screen change drastically from blue to red tones, which implies to me that there are two realities at play, or at least two perspectives. If you say, "well, that's just him getting used to walking around again, getting his bearings", then why didn't the same thing happen after Bubi stabs you with a syringe full of Nazi juice? You pretty much get over that right quickly. Something that also made me think that something else was at play, was Fergus' (I saved Fergus) attitude and demeanor half-way through the game. For the sake of double spoilers, I'll just say that he doesn't act like himself, or at least the Fergus that I was rolling with earlier in the game. Granted, over a decade had passed since our last encounter, and a lot of shit happened.

Anyone have any insight? I could go roaming the web, but it's dark and I'm lazy.2014-08-30T00:48:55Zscrypttag:cheerfulghost.com,2005:Post/20682014-06-05T04:14:12Z2014-06-05T04:14:12Z/jdodson/posts/2068/are-all-games-worth-60-uhm-no-not-reallyAre All Games Worth $60? Uhm, No, Not Really.

Boogie2998 is one of the YouTube personalities I enjoy watching. Not only do I enjoy his Francis character rage against the latest video game news, but I enjoy listening to his commentary too. In this latest vlog he talks a bit about AAA pricing and dat $60 price tag. I agree with him that not every AAA game is $60 and he notes that will most likely or is already changing.

He also notes that he felt, to make the game FEEL like it was worth $60 that the fetch quests in Wolfenstein were tacked on. He also though missions were added in to make the game longer and give people more value. Whereas I don't feel that when I play it myself, I can see the criticism. Often time game developer pad in content to make it seem like you got your moneys worth when it's just a huge slog and grind. Personally, I felt Borderlands 2 suffered from this quite a bit.

What do you think about the $60 AAA price tag and have you played a game recently that felt like it added content to make it longer?2014-06-05T04:14:12Zjdodsontag:cheerfulghost.com,2005:Post/20522014-05-25T19:43:52Z2014-05-25T19:51:37Z/Travis/posts/2052/wolfenstein-the-new-order-is-a-masterpiece-of-mayhemWolfenstein: The New Order is a Masterpiece of Mayhem
Wolfenstein: The New Order puts you back in the shoes of B.J. Blaskowicz, Nazi-killer extraordinaire, for another adventure. The game was developed by a new team at Bethesda, MachineGames, and uses the id Tech 5 engine that debuted in RAGE. The Wolfenstein franchise needed something big, and id Software has been struggling a bit and needed a win. The New Order really had a lot to prove.

And it certainly has.

For those who are unfamiliar with the franchise, Wolfenstein takes place during an alternate World War II, where The Third Reich's research into the supernatural and advanced technology pays off. Where other WWII games strive for realism, Wolfenstein has always basked in its absurdity-- Wolfenstein 3D had you fighting Mecha-Hitler, for example.

The New Order is no exception. From the very beginning, the game is over-the-top in its action, lovingly paying homage to the roots of the series. But it's not without heart-- the storyline is good enough, nothing spectacular, but used as a mechanism to tie the different areas together and set you up with reasons to cause mayhem, but the characters in the story feel very real, with real motivations, and real emotions.

The game opens in 1946, but due to some events that I won't spoil, you'll soon be in the 1960s in an even *more* alternate reality where the Nazis won the war, and now rule the world. You'll go to many different amazing places, including a secret underwater compound, and one that's so awesome I don't even want to mention it here.

Graphically, The New Order has all the benefits and downfalls of the id Tech 5 engine we saw in RAGE. Facial detail is fantastic, and characters' eyes are almost hit the uncanny valley in a few situations. For the most part, the world looks very nice as well, but when you get up close to a wall, for example, you can see where id Tech 5's megatextures start to be a drawback, lacking in detail. Making very fast movements close up to a wall will also cause some major pop-in issues where the wall is blurry for a half a second or so before the texture finishes rendering. These are minor problems, though, that you'll rarely ever see. Overall, the game is quite pretty.

The soundtrack is a standout feature for me. Many famous songs were re-recorded in German. Have you ever wondered what would happen if Germany won WWII and The Beatles had to start recording their songs in German? You can now find out.

But lets get to the meat of the game-- how does it play? Almost perfectly. The gunplay is some of the best I can remember, and for a game like this, it really needs to be. It strikes a balance between making you feel like an absolute badass and giving you a sense of danger. Yes, you can dual-wield assault rifles with rocket-launcher attachments and take out tons of enemies, but you aren't invincible. You'll need to run and grab some health or hide occasionally, and you need to be smart.

One new addition to The New Order is stealth. You can go through and kill everything as loudly and explosively as you like, or you can sneak around the levels, knifing enemies from behind or using silenced weapons to take them down without being seen. This is generally smart to do, at least at first, because you can take out commanders before they sound the alarm and call for reinforcements. You can't use stealth in every situation, but you can theoretically get through most of the game without ever being seen.

The one downside to the gameplay that I've found is the health, armor, and ammo pickups. You can't just walk over them, you have to hit E to grab them. This makes for a lot of major battles after which you end up spending a minute cleaning up loot. It's a minor inconvenience, but it definitely takes you out of the game.

The difficulty curve is pretty steady for the most part, but I found that sometimes there are outliers where things seem unreasonably tricky for a battle or two before returning to the curve you're used to. I guess this is normal. It's both frustrating and exciting, but it's "Nintendo-hard," not bullshit-hard. You can see what you're doing wrong and correct for it, which just makes you feel more awesome.

Something you would expect to find in a modern shooter that is absent here is multiplayer. Unless they release a multiplayer add-on, you're on your own. I don't count this as a strike against the game by any means. Single-player has been lacking in many first-person shooters over the past few years, and I'm glad to see it get the full attention it deserves.

You can tell MachineGames has great respect for the source material. The difficulty options are the same as they've always been, ranging from "Can I Play Daddy?" to "I Am Death Incarnate." There are TONS of collectibles and secrets, just as you'd expect from a Wolfenstein game, and some of them let you unlock new play modes, including a new Über difficulty. The game still taunts you for your cowardice when you exit the game. It really feels like a Wolfenstein game.

Really, The New Order feels like the "classic" style shooter with 2014 sensibilities. With realistic and cover-based shooters becoming the norm these days, it's refreshing to see a run-and-gun, badass shooter that can compete.

Wolfenstein: The New Order is a game of balance. The carnage, mayhem, and B-movie sensibilities balanced with believable, well-written characters that you care about; The classic shooter playstyle and fanservice for the old Wolfenstein fans balanced with enough modern shooter tendencies to pull in a new fanbase; Feeling like a total Übermensch while mowing down everything in your path balanced with a sense of danger and urgency. The balance never feels off.

Without spoiling the ending, it is written with an opening for more games, or as a good bookend to the series. I suppose whether we get more games will depend on its popularity. I, for one, hope for more. I already want to jump back in.2014-05-25T19:51:37ZTravistag:cheerfulghost.com,2005:Post/20442014-05-20T21:20:56Z2014-05-20T21:20:56Z/Travis/posts/2044/play-wolfenstein-3d-in-wolfenstein-the-new-orderPlay Wolfenstein 3D in Wolfenstein: The New Order

There are some mild spoilers in the video, so if you mind those kinds of things, beware.

I've played a little of The New Order so far and enjoying it quite a bit. I was pleased to find this awesome nod to Wolfenstein's roots. It looks like the same level that was an easter egg in RAGE, but I'm not 100% sure. I guess that would be the easy thing to do.2014-05-20T21:20:56ZTravistag:cheerfulghost.com,2005:Post/20112014-04-30T02:44:46Z2014-05-12T23:48:36Z/jdodson/posts/2011/keep-the-wolfenstein-hype-train-alive-by-watching-thisKeep The Wolfenstein Hype Train Alive By Watching This

You may have noticed that most shooters only enable you to play them in one way. Run and gun. Looks like the new Wolfenstein game has considered this and is designed to allow you choice in how you approach it. Not only can you run and gun, causing mad amounts of carnage and also paint the world with the blood of your Nazi foes. It seems Machine Games is also enabling people to play with a stealth mode style.

If you are the more "hang back and slit throats while taking some sniper shots at the Nazis" type of person, they seem to have you covered. All told I enjoy the "run and gun carnage" but I also really loved the stealth aspect of the recent BioShock Infinite DLC Burial At Sea Part 2.

Excited to try my hand at both styles when the game drops.2014-05-12T23:48:36Zjdodsontag:cheerfulghost.com,2005:Post/19752014-04-10T01:53:32Z2014-05-12T23:48:35Z/jdodson/posts/1975/nowhere-to-run-from-the-dystopian-nazi-future-from-hellNowhere To Run From The Dystopian Nazi Future From Hell

I'm not gonna lie... I pre-ordered the new Wolfenstein game because this game looks totally sick. That said, the few trailers that have dropped contain some really violent and shocking imagery. Don't get me wrong, I am no slouch to violent stuff. I loved the film Inglorious Basterds so much it sit's on my movie shelf. That said, it seems Wolfenstein: The New Order even ratchets things up quite a bit. To it's credit, to be sure.

I played Wolfenstein: The New Order at PAX prime this last summer and from what I played it was a really polished shooter. The video showcases some of the stuff we can expect from the game. Some of the video footage shows off BJ scaling a wall to the top of a building one hand on a rope while the other is spent killin' Nazis. As BJ scales the building a plane epically crashes into it and since nothing seems to stop him, he just keeps climbing.

The video also shows off a cool new stealth takedown mechanic new to Wolfenstein. Wolfenstein: The New Order will allow both a run and gun and stealth style of gameplay.

The difficulty modes in The New Order will mirror those in Wolfenstein 3D. So get ready to select from "Can I play, Daddy?", "Don't hurt me.", "Bring 'em on!" or "I am Death incarnate!" It seems many people really enjoyed the challenging 1999 mode in BioShock Infinite so heres to hoping "I am Death incarnate!" ups the ante!

As to the million dollar question of if Hitler will make an appearance Jens noted that "Hitler is not in this game.... That's all i'll say on this topic I think." I wonder if that means there will be a sequel or DLC or Hitler's head on a robot as with Wolfenstein 3D?

I am a huge fan of Wolfenstein and can't wait for Machinegames epic take on this universe to drop in 2014.
