That said, i'll drop the TLDR up at the top.

Quake Champions is a solid and fresh arena shooter that strips back much of the fluff to present a very old school deathmatch shooter that does ample justice to the Quake legacy.

And this is the last day to get Quake Champions on Steam for free until it launches for real sometime this year. You can claim it on Steam right now for free by hitting the link below.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/611500/Quake_Champions/

Since people seem hip to note when a PC game contains loot boxes or is free to play I'll do so right away in my review. *Ahem* Quake Champions contains loot boxes and is free to play. That said, if you have the ability to not wildly spend money on stuff you don't need, you can avoid the cosmetics loot box fiesta and just focus on the core gameplay which is a treat. Not to say you can experience every aspect of this game with paying or grinding way more than you'd like, you can't. But one nice thing about Quake Champions is that you can straight up buy all the Champs and be on the same level as everyone else that bought them. Or you can play for free and have access to Ranger, and one other Champ that unlocks after you complete the training mission. There is one rotating Champ that you can play that changes about every week or so and right now it's The Doom Slayer. That said, I only played as Ranger, which everyone gets for free. Oh and one other thing, each Champ has a special ability and that ability changes up how they play. I experienced other non Ranger Champs and no one seem crazy overpowered by the difference in core ability but lots of people are way better at arena shooters than I am.

As I said at the top of my review Quake Champions feels like old school Quake. I think this is a pretty fresh approach because the hottest online shooters right now getting the most attention are team shooters like Team Fortress 2 and Overwatch or the mega huge battle royale games like Fortnite and everything else that wants to be as big as Fortnite. For quite sometime I've wanted an accessible arena shooter that's simple enough to play with friends that is free so it's easy for everyone to play and Quake Champions is it. That said, I have a few irrational fears. Firstly i'm not sure there is a huge demand for Quake Champions. Will the audience for Quake Champions show up to make this game a financial success so it can live on? I'm a bit nervous that if I buy into this it might go the way of many other online only shooters that shutdown after they financially couldn't make it work. Still I worry because I love and I hope my love for Quake Champions can last a long time.

If you dig old school deathmatch shooters and want to come back and try your hand at one of the best around, Quake Champions is free right now on Steam.2018-06-17T18:37:18Zjdodsontag:cheerfulghost.com,2005:Post/33362017-05-04T04:33:32Z2017-05-04T04:33:44Z/jdodson/posts/3336/i-have-a-few-codes-for-the-quake-champions-betaI Have A Few Codes For The Quake Champions Beta To Hand Out

If you are interested in checking out the new super fast iD Software online shooter Quake Champions I have 3 beta codes to hand out. If you drop a comment on this post i'll give them out first come first served.

I've played a bit of Quake Champions and wereas I can't say much about it due to NDA it seems to live up to all the trailers i've seen of it so far!2017-05-04T04:33:44Zjdodsontag:cheerfulghost.com,2005:Post/32832017-03-13T03:42:17Z2017-03-13T03:43:42Z/jdodson/posts/3283/quake-champions-will-be-free-to-playQuake Champions Will Be Free To Play!

Being able to play an old school deathmatch shooter you can play on modern systems that can be played easily with friends is harder than it might sound. Everyone having the same game on Steam is often a problem and if you are having a few friends over as finding a shooter you all have in Steam can be a problem. I recently heard that Quake Champions will be free to play at launch, which makes me very happy. Not only does this mean that anyone with a reasonably powerful PC can play it but it also means that it's available to anyone. Like some modern arena shooters Quake Champions will allow everyone access to Ranger, the default Champion and if you want to play the other Champs you will have to pay. According to Tim Willits you will be able to grind for in game currency to temporarily play as other Champs but if you want to own them, you will have to buy them. In other F2P MOBAs you can grind in game currency to unlock Champs but since different Champions in Quake are simply cosmetic, paying to unlock them makes sense.

Hopefully Quake Champions can be played on reasonable hardware so literally anyone with a PC could play it but if it requires a powerhouse anyone with a newish PC would be OK. The system specs or final release date haven't been announced yet but when they do i'll let you know.

What do you think about Quake Champions going free to play, is this a good idea or do you think this might be bad for the game?

http://www.polygon.com/2017/3/10/14877004/quake-champions-free-to-play-full-price-favor-currency2017-03-13T03:43:42Zjdodsontag:cheerfulghost.com,2005:Post/32762017-03-08T03:46:41Z2017-03-08T03:48:22Z/jdodson/posts/3276/you-can-signup-for-id-s-new-quake-closed-beta-right-nowYou Can Signup For iD's New Quake Closed Beta Right Now!

Quake was one of the first staples at the early LAN parties I had with my friends. Since I didn't have enough money to afford the full game we were limited to four player multiplayer with the demo. Later on when I had a bit more money I found Quake III on sale and played the heck out of that. Quake, Quake II and Quake III had excellent multiplayer which is something that iD hasn't really seemed to master lately. I really enjoyed the packin co-op that Rage came with and the car deathmatch was really fun too. That said, Quake Champions is iD's upcoming arena based multiplayer shooter and it looks like a incredible retelling of Quake III.

If you're like me then you might be really interested in joining the closed beta and if you are you should head over to the Quake site and join. I'm not sure how many people they will let in, but if it's like most betas they will slowly trickle folks in to test the game and servers and then open the flood gates a bit before launch.

https://quake.bethesda.net/en/2017-03-08T03:48:22Zjdodson
