The game has been pre-loaded for a couple days and I'm champing at the bit for it to go live on the West coast. Who else has bated their breath?

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 11/10/2015 at 03:37am

I was planning on playing SC2 Legacy of the Void first and am picking it up tonight at Best Buy. I will also get Fallout 4 too so I'll be playing that as well. Like I said elsewhere I might not sleep tonight.

So yeah, I can't wait to play it.

Azurephile   Super Member wrote on 11/10/2015 at 03:43am

I didn't realize the game was able to be pre-loaded, so I just now got that started. I've been patiently waiting for it and I'll continue to do so.

How long to download at your current rate?

Azurephile   Super Member wrote on 11/10/2015 at 03:46am

I can't give you an accurate time until my other downloads complete. Right now it says about 3 days.

Azurephile   Super Member wrote on 11/10/2015 at 03:47am

I usually see my "peak network usage" at over 700/KBS, now it says it's just over 800.

Oh snap this event exists. Just saw it!

Travis   Admin wrote on 11/10/2015 at 04:10am

West-coasters: Use a VPN to the east coast and you can start playing in an hour. Or use a VPN to somewhere that's already tomorrow, and play it now!

Azurephile   Super Member wrote on 11/10/2015 at 04:17am

My Blizzard "Background Download" is going about 700/KBs, while Fallout 4 is going about 100/KBs (or less). I decided to let my Blizzard client have unlimited network access. It told me you can change that under "Settings," so I did. This is going to interfere with my Kindle time. I like to watch a bit of YouTube before bed. Downloading a game on Steam usually creates lag on my Kindle. I may see if it does that on the PS3, since I can watch YouTube there and lie in bed.

jaelte wrote on 11/10/2015 at 04:21am

@Travis I'm not sure how tightly it's enforced, but using a VPN for that purpose is technically against Steam's TOS. So I'd say to do so at your own risk.

Travis   Admin wrote on 11/10/2015 at 04:23am

@jaelte: I'd heard that doing that to get price differences or different versions of the game was against the ToS, but hadn't heard that about unlocks. Good info. People are talking about it all over like it's a typical, normal thing, so it's good to know that Steam might take action.

Travis   Admin wrote on 11/10/2015 at 04:24am

@Greg: Yeah trying to do two at once is probably hurting it.

Azurephile   Super Member wrote on 11/10/2015 at 04:26am

Well this Blizzard update is only about 3 gigs, Fallout 4 is 24 gigs. At least my Nvidia drive is up-to-date now. =)

jaelte wrote on 11/10/2015 at 05:02am

By the way, the game is available now on the West Coast. I am getting a "Ready to launch in approximately: 10 minutes" message at the moment.

jaelte wrote on 11/10/2015 at 05:04am

Ah, so there's apparently a quick patch required first that's downloading. That's why I have that message.

I picked up Fallout 4 on PC when I nabbed Starcraft 2. Fallout 4 is installing now and I am heading in to play SC2 now. YAY!

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 11/10/2015 at 05:48am

After installing a bit of Fallout 4 off the DVD the Steam download it picking up at a nice 7.0 MB/S. +1

What kind of settings do you have? The game detects your hardware and adjusts them accordingly. Mine detected as "High" or "Ultra," I can't recall which at the moment. Then I exited the game and decided to let Geforce Experience optimize it further, I believe it increased some settings.

What color did you set your HUD and Pip Boy to? I went all blue!

What character model did you go with or did you customize? I stayed with the default guy.

How did you allocate your stat points and what did you name your character? I evened them all out and named my character GregoPeck.

I believe I have the first mission started, but that's as far as I got. I think I need more sleep. There are a couple of things I don't like so much. If I look around, it seems there may be a bit of "screen tearing," at least I think that's it. Also, when talking to the salesman, I wasn't too happy with how the character's mouth looked and how it when moved with the audio. It just didn't seem totally right. Any one else with these issues or other first impressions?

Travis   Admin wrote on 11/10/2015 at 06:06pm

OMG the questions!

Mine detected as medium and it runs fine, no noticeable slowdown.

I never customize interface color, I just leave it at the default. I love that the interface is different when you have power armor on.

I customized the hair and gave him a beard (obvs) but that's it.

I went heavy perception, agility, and intelligence, as normal with Fallout games for me.

My dude is named Travis Weyland, just so the robobutler could call me something other than "sir." I promise not to join forces with someone named Yutani.

Geforce Experience probably turned off v-sync for you Greg, and that's why you're seeing screen tearing.

The voice sync? Come on this is Bethesda what do you expect? :D

>What kind of settings do you have?

1080p medium. The game runs at 30-60 fps depending on what's happening.

Standard green.

Standard guy.

Thanks for answering my questions!

@Travis, I noticed screen tearing in GTAV and found out that the VSync setting resolves that, so I'll give it a try.

Azurephile   Super Member wrote on 11/10/2015 at 07:58pm

I couldn't find a VSync setting in the game or on Geforce Experience, so I ended up turning it on globally in the Nvidia Control Panel. It's better now!

Travis   Admin wrote on 11/10/2015 at 09:56pm

It might just be called vertical sync.

Azurephile   Super Member wrote on 11/10/2015 at 11:23pm

I didn't see it anywhere, even after a second look. But, like I said, I changed the global setting in the Nvidia Control Panel, so it's all good now. When I read about VSync months ago, it seems to be a feature that some people like and some don't. I guess it just depends on the game you're running, if you experience screen tearing, and whether or not you mind screen tearing.

Travis   Admin wrote on 11/11/2015 at 03:30am

Looks like there's no menu option for it, which is weird. Also weird is that it seems it's on by default in Bethesda games, with good reason. It can make really weird things happen in that engine when turned off. Further evidence that GeForce Experience probably turned it off.

If anyone reading this doesn't have the nvidia control panel, here's where to control that in the FO4 prefs: https://www.reddit.com/r/fo4/comments/3s53en/turn_off_vsync/

Azurephile   Super Member wrote on 11/11/2015 at 04:23am

Well it was off globally in the Control Panel by default, so I just turned it on.

Travis   Admin wrote on 11/11/2015 at 04:36am

Oh! Yeah if you have it off globally that'll do it. I never turn anything on or off globally since different games need different things.
