Terraria on Steam

Terraria 1.2 is dropping October 1st and we will run the Cheerful Ghost server for a 3 week limited run the very next day.

We are limiting the people that can join and moderating the event to ensure a really smooth server. If you want to try things out, come on in and try things out. We might drop inactive players if there is a high demand.

Rules & Server Info:

  • We will generate a large game world.

  • We will start with fresh characters. The only functional item we allow you to start with is the mirror. Purely cosmetic outfits like the Mario and Link costumes are fine.

  • Respect other people's houses and property and Be excellent to each other.

  • Don't defeat the Wall of Flesh to drop the world into hardmode until we all agree.

You will need to sign in to join this event.

Any room for utter newbs? I was never able to get it run very well under monogame, but I'd boot to Windows to play. Or try with monogame again. Fez runs well, so results might be better now.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 09/12/2013 at 10:46pm

Please join, I remember playing Terraria for the first time, it was so great. I'll post more later about when the server will be live so people can play right at server drop or later if they want.

Timogorgon   Member wrote on 09/14/2013 at 07:38pm

Noobs are definitely welcome. Even the experienced peeps are going to be starting new characters and with 1.2 they are making a lot of sweeping changes to the game, so we all will be kind of "noobs" to the game again. :)

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 09/15/2013 at 12:10am

Yeah, I am not entirely sure what all the new stuff will be but I can't wait to figure it out :D

jaelte wrote on 09/15/2013 at 04:19pm

Hmm. This is one of the games I've had in my Steam library for awhile and haven't gotten around to playing yet. I'm not sure how much time I'll want to spend on it but, since you seem to welcoming noobs, please count me in. Who knows? I may become a new addiction for me. ;-)

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 09/15/2013 at 04:43pm

@jaelte: Join the event to ensure your spot, I dropped the amount of spots in the game to 8 to ensure there isn't a ton of lag and I am going to advertise the game outside the site in a few days.

AdamPFarnsworth wrote on 09/16/2013 at 05:24pm

Imma grab a spot now to check it out with y'all! But, if I get busy and can't commit to being super active, I'll let you know to bump me and let someone else join.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 09/16/2013 at 05:26pm

Sounds good, you can also leave an event you have joined as well.

Travis   Admin wrote on 09/20/2013 at 05:17pm

Hey folks, quick question--

Since there are going to be a lot of people in the server, what do you think about the starter area? Should we divvy out equal space to lay claims to before launching, or just let it flow as it will?

If we did this, we'd make 8 sections marked off as plots for building, and separate it with dungeon brick or something.

Even with our previous servers, some people get relegated to the fringes where the building situation isn't ideal, and this one will probably be more populated. This could help with fairness and cooperation, but it hinders creativity a bit in the compromise.

What do you think?

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 09/21/2013 at 09:17pm

I think we can do that Travis. So yeah, you have my +1.

Oh and I increased the event from 8 - 10 people max. I figure some people may join but not play, so I am increasing the amount of people we let in.

Also, if people join and don't play, i'll boot to allow more people to join that want to participate.

Welcome to the recent people that joined up, if you have any questions about how the game will go, ask away, we've done 2 other limited run servers before.

jaelte wrote on 09/22/2013 at 07:34am

Huh. I could've sworn I'd joined when I mentioned it before.

Travis   Admin wrote on 09/26/2013 at 04:24pm

Something interesting I just learned, and look away now if you don't want any item spoilers: We may want to eventually start a second world with the same characters.

There are world-exclusive ores in 1.2. For example, if you have iron in your world, you'll never see lead. If you have platinum, you'll never see gold. If you have crimson, you'll never see corruption.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 09/26/2013 at 04:26pm

Interesting. So are these ores just like equivalent to the others? So if you have Plat you won't see Gold so they are equal ores?

AdamPFarnsworth wrote on 09/26/2013 at 04:29pm

Look at Terraria, ripping off Starbound...
;-)

Travis   Admin wrote on 09/26/2013 at 04:35pm

No, they aren't exactly equal. Platinum is better than gold, lead is better than iron. They're closer than silver and gold, but not the same.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 09/26/2013 at 04:37pm

Interesting.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 09/26/2013 at 04:44pm

This shows off the Crimson. It's interesting that they have alternates to keep things interesting.

I'm going to bow out and give my spot to someone else. I'm starting a new job that day and might not have much time to play.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 09/30/2013 at 12:13am

That's cool, thanks bean. If you have some time, feel free to join.

Also, here is a work in progress change log for Terraria 1.2. The item dupe bug and the like have been fixed :D

"You can now make picks instead of drills and axes instead of chainsaws in late game tiers."

I hope that means you can make drills OR picks, etc. I loved my drills. ; ;

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 09/30/2013 at 10:40pm

It reads like its inclusive to me. Or said another way, yeah you can still use your drill, seems like its an option if you don't like the drill. The drill may be somewhat loud(GET OFF MY LAWN) but it seemed fine to me too :D

I'll be on tonight as soon as I get the kids off to bed. :)

jaelte wrote on 10/02/2013 at 07:36am

So I logged in for a bit... I think I'm going to need to read/watch some sort of tutorial because I'm not really sure what I'm doing. It does seem interesting, though.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/02/2013 at 02:22pm

Yeah, I watched a few videos myself. But if you play with any of us we can help you out too.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/02/2013 at 04:40pm

So I played for a few hours last night and had a blast. I was mining for quite a long time until I found any ores and then only a trickle. THEN after a bit I was just hit with load after load of ore or what I was calling "the rich stuff." Anyways, I found some rad gear and @WhiteboySlim and I found some ice caves under the snow biome. There is also a Pyramid section under the desert biome.

So far, I have noticed a TON more loot drops from bad guys and the chests are loaded up with great finds as well.

Timogorgon   Member wrote on 10/02/2013 at 07:03pm

That Pyramid was pretty cool if a bit small. I'm loving the Sandstorm in a bottle I picked up. It's just like the cloud in the bottle, but with a snazzier animation. It might be my imagination, but I think it jumps a little higher too.

I'll should be on again tonight. It will probably be after 8 or 9 pm PST though, so I might be on too late for some of you guys. I've previously put in 151 hours in Terraria (thanks for reminding me, Steam) and this feels almost like a whole new game. There is SO MUCH NEW STUFF and even the old stuff seems to have been tweaked or revamped.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/04/2013 at 05:15pm

Ok so a bit of an update.

It seems when you have the Crimson instead of Corruption you can spawn the Brain of Cthulhu instead of Eater of Worlds. To spawn the Brain you need 15 Vertebrae and then you can craft the Bloody Spine at a Crimson Altar. I setup a Brain fightin' area to the left of the base and @WhiteboySlim and I killed 3. Basically the Brain drops the Crimtane Ore and Tissue Samples + cash and a random chance to spawn a wand.

The Crimtane Ore allows you to craft the ore weapon and armor set. I have the full armor set and the bonus is increased life regen, which is killer. Anyways, I will be harvesting more Vertebrae for Brain runs, so yay!

http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Crimtane_Ore
http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Brain_of_Cthulhu

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/04/2013 at 05:29pm

How tricky was the brain? I loved the mechanics of the EoW fight, kinda sad we don't get to fight him.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/04/2013 at 05:40pm

I agree, but the Brain is somewhat similar(sort of).

The Brain is VERY reminiscent of Mother Brain and much harder than EoW at first. Basically it spawns and is invincible but has these floating circles you must kill. They die individually and when they are all gone you can kill the Brain.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/05/2013 at 04:46am

Tonight I tipped over to 201 hours played. Bethesda games are now the only ones beating Terraria in terms of time played.

I love this game.

jaelte wrote on 10/08/2013 at 02:53am

So apparently the password has changed? I am now getting an error telling me that it's incorrect.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/08/2013 at 03:36am

jaelte, I already mentioned this to you on Steam, but to anyone else, Jon isn't home to restart the server but he should be soon. Sorry for the inconvenience!

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/08/2013 at 04:23am

Should be fine now. Sorry yall.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/12/2013 at 06:47pm

So Travis and I did a bunch of Queen Bee kills and I love the new boss fight. We were also thinking about good ways to farm the goods and realized we might be able to build a hive over the lava with the bee wand and mine the honey blocks that way.

Oh and with the new Bee Gun and boss fight, I was reminded of this:

http://stream1.gifsoup.com/view1/1416886/oprah-s-bees-o.gif

http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Abeemination

* Honey Block: put hive over water, mine until you have enough since you can replace hive w wand.
* Crisp Honey Block: put hive over lava, mine until you have enough since you can replace hive w wand.
* Stinger: Kill bees in the Jungle
* Hive: Mine them from the hive
* Obsidian: Mine from lava+water
* Bottled Honey: put jars in your honey from mining it from the hive

Am I missing something? For me the hardest bit will be obsidian, never was great at mining that.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/13/2013 at 02:29am

Man I am really digging the new bee stuff. New boss, bee gun, vanity set, hive & honey. A totally awesome addition to the game!

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/14/2013 at 05:00am

I was just looking over new potions we can make and I made a few of these, returning damage to an attacker seems pretty useful. Maybe even boss fights.

http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Thorns_Potion

Not too hard to craft either.

AdamPFarnsworth wrote on 10/14/2013 at 03:12pm

I loved casting Thorns as a druid in WoW. It's always great to passively damage :-)

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/16/2013 at 03:09am

So I've really been digging the new houses people have been putting up in different biomes. Tonight I turned the dungeon entrance into a house for our delving needs. I guess beach houses and cactus houses are next, though they provide less utility.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/16/2013 at 03:12am

Right. WhiteboySlim and I put one up in the snow biome to get ready for hardmode.

Speaking of, when are we going to kill the Wall of Flesh? I am thinking soon because I am, right now, not entirely sure what to do next. What have you guys been doing?

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/16/2013 at 03:29am

I've been obsessing over collecting stuff, and finding beehives. Farming some materials for the dungeon tonight made me realize that there's still some challenge there, so I might hang out down there a bit. Jaelte, how are you doing on gearing up for hardmode?

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/16/2013 at 03:37am

I also think we should kill Skeletron a few times as well. I kind of want to see how well we do with him now :D

jaelte wrote on 10/16/2013 at 06:12am

Travis:
I'm not really sure how to answer that question. I've read a little, but I don't fully know what hard mode entails, nor what I would need in order to be better equipped for it. I suppose I should head down into Hell and check it out one these days...

jdodson:
I wouldn't be opposed to checking out Skeletron. I've never seen that boss before.

jaelte wrote on 10/16/2013 at 08:51am

OK, Hell's not so bad. I dinked around for an hour or so mining Hellstone and, aside from burning to death once (easily remedied by crafting a skull), I didn't have much trouble. Now to make some more Obsidian and figure out what to make with resulting Hellstone bars.

As far as hard mode goes, like I said, I don't really know enough about it to know how well I can handle it. Don't let me slow you all down, though. I'm sure I'll learn to survive either way. :-)

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/16/2013 at 02:47pm

Well, crafting the hellstone armor is the last stuff you can get before hardmode so when you make the set, you as ready as you could be.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/16/2013 at 10:00pm

Should we wait for the Halloween update before popping the server into Hardmode?

https://twitter.com/Demilogic/status/390597870820155392/photo/1

Might make some sense.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/17/2013 at 12:27am

Yes, lets wait until after that. It's always good to explore new content when you're geared up for the world. Looking forward to the creeper costume!

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/17/2013 at 12:47am

Me too. I hope this stuff lasts all year and not just time based, but some of it may be.

A great pumpkin boss battle perhaps?

Timogorgon   Member wrote on 10/17/2013 at 03:13am

Creeper costume! Do we know if the Halloween update is coming before or on Halloween? I don't know if I want to wait until 10/31 for hardmode. :\

@Travis. Yeah I made the jungle house, and then Jon and I made the Ice one. Once we get into Hardmode I saw there's a teleporter item we can get off one of the new NPC's and I was hoping (not sure how the teleporter works really...) that we can link the different houses via teleporter. :D

@Jaelte, Once you craft up a full set of hellstone gear (armor set, sword, pickaxe, and hamdrax) you should be pretty well geared for hardmode. If need help digging out more hellstone or obsidian just let me know.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/17/2013 at 05:13am

@WhiteboySlim: while it isn't confirmed, the Halloween update will be out before October 31st. My impression is in the next week or so, but you never know.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/17/2013 at 04:00pm

As for the teleporter, you can connect any two locations together with wire. So we should be able to go from main base to other bases, but probably not from say the dungeon to the jungle, because of the 3000 block limit on wire. I guess you could have teleporter waypoints.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/17/2013 at 05:28pm

I had no idea this could be done. My new goal is to see this happen before Hardmode :D

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/17/2013 at 07:04pm

Ah, sorry jon. You have to be in hardmode to make the teleporters. Otherwise I'd be all over that :)

There's also a hardmode item that lets you instantly teleport to any open spot on screen. I'm really looking forward to that.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/17/2013 at 07:15pm

Ah dang, read what you said wrong then. Oh well, more stuff to keep hardmode compelling.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/17/2013 at 10:27pm

Luckily we only need to beat the first hardmode boss to get the NPC who sells them, so we should be able to get it pretty quickly.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/18/2013 at 02:18am

So I was building a shack on the beach, since I'm building shacks everywhere lately. I killed a ton of enemies out there, including a lot of ocean life (Just call me BP... heyo!) and happened to notice that I had an item called a "pirate map." So I thought, what's this? And used it.

Oh boy, bad idea.

Well, good idea. But it was a struggle. PIRATES INVADED. We now have a new NPC, Blackbeard the Pirate.

Thing is, that item isn't supposed to drop pre-hardmode. I suppose it bugged out.

At any rate, if you want a set of pirate clothes or a cannon, he's your guy. If you want a parrot pet, make him live in the beach shack and he'll sell that there.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/18/2013 at 02:27am

Awesome. I dropped in for a bit and boy were those pirates hard! I imagine at some point maybe we can farms maps or something and spawn bosses to see how we can do vs all that stuff.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/19/2013 at 08:44pm

I did some work on the NPC housing. It seems like I've been unofficially in charge of that on each server and I was getting bored with wood houses with wood walls.

Going to start prepping the world for hardmode, putting down some dungeon brick to prevent major damage from the clowns in hardmode and the spread of crimson.

Oh, and there's some corruption now, safely away from other stuff. You can now farm the pieces to spawn the Eater of Worlds, unfortunately I can't seem to get him to spawn.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/19/2013 at 10:45pm

I take that back. Jon got on and we were able to get EoW to spawn but he's a bit tricky to keep to the artificial biome and keeps leaving. I guess we're going to need a bigger biome.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/21/2013 at 03:26am

In the pursuit of things to do while waiting for Halloween/hard mode I built an arena for hard mode bosses to the east of town. Look for a rope next to the greenhouse. Nothing to do there for a while but it's ready for us.

I wish I knew when the Halloween update was coming.

jaelte wrote on 10/21/2013 at 07:11am

So I'm decked out with full Molten gear. I see that there's one pre-hard mode sword that's considered an upgrade to the Fiery Greatsword, I'll need farm some in order to obtain its components (assuming they still drop). I'm probably good to go for hard mode either way, though.

Does anybody have additional suggestions/requests? I'd be willing to help out with construction or whatever.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/21/2013 at 07:07pm

Yeah the Night's Edge-- you need the fiery greatsword (which I assume you have) the crimson/corrupt sword, which you probably have, the muramasa and the blade of grass. The muramasa is in Dungeon chests, and I think there are a couple still there, we've been leaving stuff we don't need. The blade of grass is pretty easy to get materials for. You should get extra so you can make an ivy whip too.

Other than that, I recommend the star cannon and the Phoenix Blaster for the Wall of Flesh fight. Star Cannon has very limited ammo, obviously, since it uses stars , so use it sparingly. The Phoenix Blaster isn't automatic like the minishark but it makes up for it in damage done.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/21/2013 at 07:42pm

And the Bee Gun. Always Bee Gun.

Timogorgon   Member wrote on 10/21/2013 at 09:01pm

@Travis and @jdodson: Were you able to craft the worm food at a crimson altar? Or did you have to take the items to another world you created and craft it at a demon altar?

@Jaelte: It sounds like you're pretty good to go for hardmode. A night's edge is nice, but on our last server I went into hardmode with the fiery great sword and did fine until I could craft a Phase Saber, which is very easy to get once in hardmode provided you already have a phase saber (craft from meteorite bars + gemstones of the color you want). I prefer the minishark over the phoenix blaster, but both work just fine. Last but not least, try to find some Hermes boots if you haven't already. You'll need the speed to outrun the wall of flesh. Plus you can craft your rocket boots and the hermes boots together at the tinkerers station. Sorry if that's a bit of information overload!

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/21/2013 at 09:16pm

@WhiteboySlim: You can craft the worm food at a Crimson Altar but Travis got the food from another of his games.

I also left a pair of Hermes Boots in the chests in the spawn zone at one point.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/22/2013 at 02:13am

I got some of them from our first server, actually. :) But yeah, I crafted a few at a crimson altar.

As for phoenix blaster vs. minishark, the shark does 6 base damage compared to the blaster's 23, but it's much faster. For me it seems to work out to about the same dps for less ammo, BUT if you need to spray and pray the shark is your best bet. The phoenix blaster will hurt him hard but the shark will get through the hungry better.

Bring both :) Or spawn the Eye of Cthulu and try them both out and see what you think. Reading around it looks like they're equally recommended.

Either way, make some meteor shot for them.

I bet the bee gun would actually do pretty well with it, helping to get rid of the hungry, then swap to the real gun and pop some caps.

The star cannon can seriously do some damage though. I've been hoarding stars like a squirrel for it, but it isn't really sustainable for many fights.

Melee is basically right out though.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/22/2013 at 04:44am

I have been hoarding stars too, late game it's either use them for the cannon or make star lights from them. I love the Star Cannon but it feels like its the most expensive ammo ever :D

jaelte wrote on 10/22/2013 at 07:22am

So I explored the whole dungeon (WBS joined me for a bit) and didn't find any Muramasas or Handguns, so it looks like I'll be going into hard mode with Fiery Greatsword and Minishark -- and a Bee Gun, of course. Thankfully, I was able to find enough Meteorite to make a Phaseblade (with one whole bar left over), so I should be able to make the Saber version pretty early on. If I happen upon some more Meteorite, I'll look into building a star cannon, but I'd definitely need to farm stars if I don't want to run out of ammo in the first few seconds of the fight.

So anyway, I'm probably as read as I'll ever be. I guess we now wait for that hallowed patch.

Timogorgon   Member wrote on 10/22/2013 at 04:58pm

The fiery great sword and minishark are plenty powerful to get you through the wall of flesh fight and into hardmode. If you really really want the muramasa and/or handgun your best bet is to create a small single player world and go straight to the dungeon. You're geared up enough that you should make short work of skeletron and after last night you should have plenty of golden keys to open all the chests. You can probably get all the dungeon items in a half an hour or less. :)

That's actually how i got my lucky horseshoe (negates fall damage). It looked like there were none left on our server when I went looking for floating islands, so I just created a single player world specifically to find one.

Timogorgon   Member wrote on 10/22/2013 at 05:06pm

Oh, and here's my thoughts on the new stuff that was built on the server:

The dungeon brick looks cool! Although I hate to break this to you after you did all that hard work, but the clowns no longer damage blocks. I loaded up our old server file to confirm. But still, it seriously looks cool!

The boss fight arena is insanely cool. How on earth did you find all those heart statues? (P.S. All those statues under my house are up for grabs if anyone needs them for any contraptions.)

The jungle/corruption/mushroom farming area is cool too. But I'm a little concerned that they're big enough to spawn the biome specific mobs. Especially the corruption once we get into hardmode. It will start spawning corruptors which can infect the area around our base. The corruption area you set up above our crimson boss fight area should be fine because 1) it's so far up and 2) the surrounding area is crimson, and I'm pretty sure any corruption won't spread in the crimson.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/22/2013 at 08:51pm

"the clowns no longer damage blocks."
WHAT?! Well, at least it will keep the Crimson at bay when it starts spreading, since after hardmode the crimson/hallow V might get really close to base.

That's something else to bring up. Jon, you should consider backing the server up right before WoF, since our base could be totally ruined by the initial deposit of crimson/hallow.

" How on earth did you find all those heart statues?"
I went into our previous worlds and took the heart statues from the boss arenas there, two from my first personal world, and two from this world. If anyone considers that cheating I'll totally pull some of them up. :)

" It will start spawning corruptors which can infect the area around our base."

I forgot about the corruptor spit. That's an excellent point. I'll move it somewhere else. It wasn't working for what I wanted to accomplish anyway-- EoW doesn't exactly cooperate. Jon and I were trying to spawn every pre-hardmode boss at once the other day.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/22/2013 at 09:39pm

" Jon, you should consider backing the server up right before WoF"

I can totally do that, no problem.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/23/2013 at 01:11am

OK, removed the corruption and moved the mushrooms up to the next level, so the jungle has more room. The trees weren't growing well.

If the jungle enemies start annoying anyone (especially you, Jaelte, since you're on that edge) let me know and I'll knock out some of it.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/23/2013 at 02:35am

So tonight I built us a shack at the far end of the platform in hell, so we can set our home point and such. Put a lava sacrificial shrine on top to summon the wall. And extended the platform a bit. We should be all set to get there and kill him.

So what do you all think about this weekend? Any plans to get in the way of us taking him down? Ideally all four of us kill him together, though I can only remember once when we were all on at the same time.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/23/2013 at 03:09am

I am thinking this Saturday at 1pm PST?

That work for anyone else?

Also, originally the server ended tomorrow. I just extended that to middle of November :D

Timogorgon   Member wrote on 10/23/2013 at 04:16am

Saturday at 1pm PST? I will try to get on around then. It depends on whether or not I can get my son down for a nap. He usually naps around that time, so I think I'll be good. :)

jaelte wrote on 10/23/2013 at 08:28am

@jdodson: I will check need to into my availability, but I should be able to make 1 p.m. Saturday.
@WBS: Thanks for the suggestion. I was bored, so I went to a single-player game. Skeletron was indeed quite simple -- the Minishark with normal shot made quick work of it. I looted I think four dungeon chests and got a Cobalt Shield (fwiw), Muramasa, and a Handgun. We'll see if I can get some farming/crafting in before Saturday.

AdamPFarnsworth wrote on 10/23/2013 at 05:23pm

Since the event was supposed to end, but was extended, maybe we could start a new event and continue the conversation on that event? (That was those of us that aren't playing don't get notifications)

If not, it's all good, just a suggestion :)

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/23/2013 at 06:20pm

Ill take you off the notification train tonight Adym, no problem.

Ill also be modifying events so people an unfollow them in the next few weeks or sooner.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/24/2013 at 02:38pm

Hey good news, the corruptors no longer spread corruption: http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Corruptor

I guess they no longer live up to their name.

In addition, the Steampunker sells a weapon called the clentaminator that uses different solutions to cleanse corruption or crimson, or spread it. So it seems we can more easily fight the crimson/corruption in hardmode now. I was considering digging trenches like I'd done in the past but I think I'll let it ride and see what we end up with Saturday.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/25/2013 at 03:02am

I put a base on each end of the Wall of Flesh bridge so regardless of which side we're on we can spawn the Wall and get a bed while we're there. Yeah, I'm filling time :) It may save some farming time, though, since we can just go to whichever is closest.

I stocked a chest in the first one you come to with some goodies for each of us, buffs and potions. Any other suggestions? I have another night to mess around :)

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/25/2013 at 04:00pm

So this morning I harvested my pumpkin crop and got a ton more pumpkin. Made two pumpkin themed levels to my spire. I also got a pumpkin pet I can plant.

Looks like the Pumpkin Moon event is a hardmode only thing and you need to be fairly well geared to complete it. Seems that its a multi-staged boss event. It has a random chance of happening in hardmode or you can create something to trigger it w pumpkin and other hardmode stuffs.

So far, I dig the update. OH and it was confirmed, there will a Christmas update much like this one and "robotic elves" were mentioned :D

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/25/2013 at 04:08pm

Yeah we gotta gear up before Nov 10 so we can take out the Pumking! Most of that stuff in your second comment up from this one is dropped by him, and I've read that he's tough even in badass gear.

Timogorgon   Member wrote on 10/25/2013 at 04:43pm

Wow, so much new stuff already! In that post for the new armor/items it made mention of a "headless horseman" and a "mourning wood" (lol). Other new monsters?

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/25/2013 at 05:58pm

I've heard the Golden Shower is particularly effective against Mourning Wood.

That's a totally serious statement, I'm not joking at all, and I love that redigit has enabled me to use that sentence in a factual manner. Golden Shower is a top-tier 1.2 spell.

Timogorgon   Member wrote on 10/25/2013 at 07:54pm

LOL. Can that be the MOTD on the server? jdodson, make it happen!

So bloodmoons are awesome for gathering goodie bags. I've gotten like 12 over two bloodmoons.
Costumes I've found so far:
Cat
Fox
Princess
Pixie
Cat ears (different from the cat costume)
Grim Reaper
Ghost
Leprechaun
Robot (which is awesome, btw)
Treasure Hunter (it's Lara Croft!)
Pumpkin (different from Pumpkin armor)

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/25/2013 at 08:10pm

"Yeah we gotta gear up before Nov 10 so we can take out the Pumking! Most of that stuff in your second comment up from this one is dropped by him, and I've read that he's tough even in badass gear."

It seems we can spawn the new Pumpkin Moon event if we have the right stuff any time of year. The special "treat bag" and pumpkins growing spontaneously is all time of year based. Or else that seems to be what i've read.

Timogorgon   Member wrote on 10/25/2013 at 08:11pm

Oh and on a side note. I noticed that the glowing mushroom biome you made above ground is spawning unique mobs. I saw a glowing mushroom zombie, a mob similiar to the man eaters from the jungle, and a beetle that took a surprising amount of hits to kill! No unique drops from any of them, however (at least so far).

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/25/2013 at 08:42pm

OK, I have yet to play this update, won't get to dive in til tonight, but how have you found so many costumes? Holy cow, that's a lot.

Are goodie bags just random loot from any enemy or specific ones?

And yeah, the mushroom enemies are pretty awesome. I hope hardmode doesn't come with really hard mushroom enemies or I might have to relocate it.

Timogorgon   Member wrote on 10/25/2013 at 09:09pm

All the costumes come from the goodie bags. Each time you open the goodie bag you get a random costume or rotten eggs (which can be thrown).

The goodie bags are random drops off of mobs. They definitely drop off the costumed monsters. As for the regular mobs? It's hard to tell. There was one time I think a bag dropped off a normal jungle bat, but that was during a blood moon and there were a lot of other mobs around at the time. So it could have just been lag and it dropped off a near by costumed monster.

jaelte wrote on 10/26/2013 at 03:44am

Goodie bags can definitely drop off non-costumed mobs. I got my first couple while in the Underground Jungle where nothing was costumed.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/26/2013 at 05:13am

So tonight WBS, Jaelte and I farmed the hell out of some goodie bags. I've made comments before about how I don't understand people's obsession over costumes in video games, but I spent hours farming for items so I could play dress-up. Go figure.

WBS made a horrible genetic experiment gone wrong by mixing a unicorn head with a ninja turtle body. Excuse me, karate tortoise.

Terraria makes me get the "gotta catch em all" mindset like no other game. I MUST HAVE ALL THE COSTUMES.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/26/2013 at 03:01pm

I've made a pretty effective goodie bag farm to the West of town, past the biome farms. Using pressure plates, a timer, and dart traps, you can sit safely enclosed in brick and especially with a water candle and the slime pet, rack up the bags.

Since getting hit with multiple dart traps at once only counts as one hit, I'm using the pressure plates and the timer together to stagger the shots.

Feel free to farm the hell out of it!

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/26/2013 at 04:28pm

So in one blood moon, my bunker thingie racked up over 6 gold and 7 goodie bags, along with 14 shackles and 4 zombie arms. Easy pickings!

Timogorgon   Member wrote on 10/26/2013 at 06:24pm

Ha ha ha ha, awesome! Yeah I definitely feel the "gotta catch 'em all" fever with this game. So far the only costumes I'm missing are the Creeper, the Alien, and the Bride of Frankenstein. I've also never gotten any of the paintings or the cat summon item. :\

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/26/2013 at 08:51pm

I have a ton of the costumes now and it's pretty surprising how many they added to the game.

Oh and this conversation thread has been and is currently the longest running one on the site. 113 comments.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/27/2013 at 01:01am

Ok I have an idea for a plan we can follow for the start of hardmode.

Mine and find a palladium armor set. You can also mine for a Mythryl or Titanium set if you want too. I have a full Palladium set and its helping.

We need to kill some hardmode bosses to get Hallowed Bars. Its easy to get them now, just kill a hardmode boss and they drop it. Reason we need hallowed bars is for a level 200 pickaxe.

http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Pickaxe

Reason you need that is so you can mine Chlorophyte Ore. Chlorophyte Ore is a ore that spawns in the jungle that automagically spawns from mud. Ive seen it in the jungle I just cant mine it. You can craft some ultra powerful gear from it, so I think we should go that direction.

http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Chlorophyte_Ore

SO gear up some, lets do some hardmode boss fights, get a level 200 pickaxe and chlorophyte. An idea.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/27/2013 at 02:51am

Ok so potential problem. Since our Hallowed area is small how will we farm souls of light for the boss fights? I got a few so far but I dont remember where they dropped.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/27/2013 at 05:32am

I got a ton in hell below the hallow. The surface hallow is small but deep underground it's pretty big.

Also, when I spoke to you earlier on the server I had some reservations about fighting the hardmode bosses in just Palladium armor. I have full Mythril armor right now, and the Destroyer just showed up at random while I was at home organizing chests. Totally unprepared, I was able to take him out. So, consider me convinced. I think they must have tweaked the damage he does or something.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/27/2013 at 06:13am

Finished out the titanium armor set and dove into the jungle. The jungle is the place to be. The spawn point for Plantera is down there now since a hard mode boss has been defeated, the life fruit are all over the place, and there's chlorophyte to collect. One thing to note about chlorophyte is that it grows back as long as you leave one piece of it there. So when you mine it, be sure to leave one. We are going to need so much chlorophyte to finish off all the items we can craft.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/27/2013 at 08:46pm

Ok after some farming I have the full Chlorophyte armor set and Claymore. Really dig it.

http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Chlorophyte_Bar

Up for Plantera at some point. I read that after we pop him, if we don't mirror, but make or way to the surface he is super simple to kill.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/28/2013 at 03:05am

So after you get the pygmy staff from Plantera, the Witch Doctor starts selling armor and accessories geared toward a summoner-type player, kinda like the Witch Doctor in Diablo III. The Pygmy Staff summons pygmy minions, like the slime minion but way more effective, and with all the gear from the the Witch Doctor, you can have six minions active at once.

This makes summoner viable. If you're down mining in the hallow or whatever where there are hard enemies around, the pygmy army actually takes care of things for you so you can do what you want.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/28/2013 at 03:05am

I took a screenshot as well: http://i.imgur.com/5K4cVMo.jpg?1

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/28/2013 at 06:40am

So is the only way to get that staff to farm plantera?

Oh and I think my favoriate new "old biome" is the jungle. So many uses now with the hives and Chlorophyte. Great addition. 👍👻

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/28/2013 at 02:40pm

The jungle is my favorite place, period. Seriously, so much going on there now.

Timogorgon   Member wrote on 10/28/2013 at 06:43pm

So I made my way through the entire jungle temple and disabled all the traps (using wire cutters, I felt very sneaky/thief-ish). I also spawned the golem just to see how the fight went. He was a bit much for me one on one with no buffs and no prepping before the fight, but as a group I really don't think he'll be a problem. Especially if we set up the arena a bit first. Some things I noted on the fight:

-The altar is in a large, mostly square room. Setting up an arena should be easy.
-After I activated the altar enemies in the temple started dropping alter cores. I gathered 3 or 4 just on the walk out of the temple.(I stuck them in the temple safe house chest). Spamming this boss should be easy. :D
-I noticed the following attacks from the Golem: 1) Fireballs that can be blocked by walls. 2) His hands that act like projectiles and can be blocked by walls AND knocked back by weapons. 3) Lasers that pass through walls. He started shooting these after his stage 2 kicked in. The lasers hurt pretty bad but were not too hard to dodge.
-He despawns really easy. This is how the fight actually ended. I retreated around the corner from the altar room just to restore some HP and he despawned.
-I see no reason we can't set up a ton of traps in the altar room and kill the Golem with his own traps. :P

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/28/2013 at 10:27pm

I fought him a few times and with the platform you had up top, I was barely getting hit until the head splits off. With some buffs, the first part will probably not net you any life loss. The second wave when the head separates is a pain but quite doable.

But yeah, I've seen some farms for this guy where it's just spawning him and watching him die due to all the traps. Or making him spawn above you and shooting him from below. There are a lot of possibilities.

With a pickaxe that you get from him, I think you can even move the altar if you're so inclined, so we could make him spawn exactly where we want him.

So I've been dungeon diving for ectoplasm all day, seriously for about 5 hours. I ended up with nowhere near enough to make the Spectre Armor. So insane.

But in the process I noticed that I only lack 4 items to make the Ankh Charm.

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/terraria.gamepedia.com/1/1b/Ankh.jpg

This has to be the most complex item in the game, but I still think I'll have it before I have all the ectoplasm I need :)

Timogorgon   Member wrote on 10/28/2013 at 10:34pm

Yeah, that ankh charm is insane. So far I have the bezoar, the bandage, the tri-fold map, and the armor polish. Still a lot of materials to gather!

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/29/2013 at 02:02am

Yeah I got two Bezoars a while back, if anyone needs my spare. I also have two extra bandages from my trip to the dungeon today.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/29/2013 at 09:53pm

I made a Golem "arena" below our hardmode boss arena.

I use "arena" in quotes because it's really just a matter of hitting the timer, activating the altar, and running back and forth when the lasers start firing.

I urge you all to fight this boss legitimately once before you use this, because this method is very cheap, and the boss fight isn't that bad. I made a quicker path to his chamber as well, so you can get to him more easily.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/30/2013 at 02:42am

We're wired up now to get to the snow house and the dungeon quickly. There's a teleporter at the east end of town. The first hop is the snow house, the second is to a waypoint (no wire connection can be more than 2000 wires long) and then to the dungeon. I can't think of anything else noteworthy on that end of the map, but I'll wire up one on the west of town going to the jungle, lihzahrd, etc.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/30/2013 at 02:44am

Awesome, thanks for this Travis, getting to the Dungeon has been a real pain in the ass so this will really help that out quite a bit!

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/30/2013 at 03:29am

I considered one to the underworld but we don't really need it much at this point. It kinda sucks that you can't get teleporters til hard mode, because they'd be way more of a help about halfway through pre-hard mode.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/30/2013 at 03:43am

Can you cheat it and just bring the supplies over from another game? I agree with you BTW, so if we could do that, I say for the next one, lets :D

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/30/2013 at 03:51am

Yeah you can do that. Definitely worth considering for sure. It almost eliminates the need for safehouses

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/31/2013 at 12:09am

Ehm, I think I messed something up. I tried one of the teleports and it worked to get me to the ice level and then nothing worked anymore. Plus the pad on the right side of the village is gone, I think I removed it but its not in my inventory.

Sorry.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 10/31/2013 at 12:10am

@WhiteboySlim my guess is Plantera gets some serious buffs so she is MUCH harder to kill on the outside.

Travis   Admin wrote on 10/31/2013 at 12:56pm

I wonder if hell below the jungle counts. I fought her down there the other day and it worked well.

That's odd about the teleporters. I probably won't be on today at all, so if anyone wants to take a crack at it, be my guest!

Travis   Admin wrote on 11/01/2013 at 02:07am

So we got the new patch today. I've noticed a few things because of it. You don't have to be anywhere near a campfire for its effects. Standing right to the left of Jaelte's house, I still get the effects from my campfire.

Also, apparently placed water candles do increase spawn rate. WBS, standing under your house causes the buff to show up, and your water candles are placed a few floors up.

Jon, as for the teleporter issues, they all work just fine here. Not sure what you were seeing.

Timogorgon   Member wrote on 11/01/2013 at 09:23pm

Oh snap, yeah. Ok I took out the water candles from my house. They're now safely stored in a chest. I wonder if that's a bug or if the wiki was wrong when it said that laying a candle out does not grant it's effects. It also makes me wonder about the dungeon and all the candles sitting around down there. :\

I did the golem fight legitimately earlier. It was kinda sad. He's actually really easy. I got a nimbus rod the other day and it literally rained destruction on him. Pair that with the golden shower to cut down his defense and it was over pretty quick. Then I tried your golem death trap and I gotta say, that is hilarious to watch. The server did NOT like that though, and it caused a HUGE lag spike what with all those traps around.

Speaking of lag, was that rainbow brick near my house causing anyone else trouble? I'm not sure if it was lagging because of my laptop or because of the server. :\ Either way I would really appreciate having that moved.

Plantera is a jerk, btw. He killed me twice and I never even got him to the surface to see what "enraged" really means. :P I'm going to start setting up a plantera arena down by the jungle temple. I'm not sure how well it'll work out, since we can't plan where the plantera bulb will grow, but I figure it's worth a shot. My plan is to just make a huge square empty space for plenty of room to move around, and then have several long rows of jungle grass in hopes the bulb spawns there. Worse case scenario we end up with a good place to farm life fruit.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 11/02/2013 at 12:51am

I think the Plantera arena is a good idea. So far he is the hardest boss i've fought in the game and now that he is harder on the surface, might make sense to create one for him.

Travis   Admin wrote on 11/02/2013 at 04:57am

Just saw these comments, I didn't see any lag issues with the rainbow brick. I made a park in that empty, unused space and decided to spruce it up with some rainbow. I'll totally get those out tomorrow.

I'm supercharging the traps to the west of town but I'm not done. Feel free to play with it but be warned, I don't have anything labeled yet and it may be dangerous if you do things out of order.

Travis   Admin wrote on 11/02/2013 at 05:17am

OK, cleared up the rainbow brick. If you still get lag I'll move the whole thing. Depending on what's taxing your laptop. I doubt the fountains are using effects, most likely just basic animations, but I don't mind prying up the whole thing.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 11/02/2013 at 10:55pm

Tried out the tele-porters and they are awesome. Thanks for putting those in, I can go to the dungeon and the jungle so fast.

WBS and I hit up Plantera in the arena he built, makes the fight a snap. We killed the Golem once too, pretty easy fight all told.

So, since we are doing pretty well rocking out the bosses, I went over and farmed ectoplasm for the Pumpkin Moon Medallion and I now have 2. This should be a pretty intense fight we might want to try doing together.

I have some time tonight, say 7p? If you guys are in, let me know.

Travis   Admin wrote on 11/05/2013 at 02:46am

Having gotten tired of hopping to other worlds to get stuff from the hallow, since ours is so tiny, I made a small patch between the two crimson areas to the east of town. I extended it slightly underground so you can go there for souls of light, etc.

If anyone wants to expand it, all that it will require is making a house over there and putting the Steampunk in it so she sells the hallow solution.

Travis   Admin wrote on 11/05/2013 at 02:46am

Just be careful with it and keep it somewhere containable.

Going to read up on how I can get more of those little guys.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 11/15/2013 at 08:39pm

Hey all.

Logged in to the server last night because I wanted to try some bullet crafting. Apparently there are two really interesting high level bullets you can craft from musket balls.

Crystal Bullets and Chlorphyte Bullets.

http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Crystal_Bullet
http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Chlorophyte_Bullet

Crystal Bullets seem to be to be the best. Hit for 8 but break into 3 pieces and do sharding damage at 60% the original value. Just to test I hit up our good old friend Plantera and I killed her 2 our of the 3 times I went at her. The bullets really mess her up.

I mined some Chlorophyte and they do 15 damage(wow) and seek enemies on screen. I haven't tried it because they cost Chlorophyte Bars to use(expensive) but I love the idea.

Anyways, the server is gonna shut down in 5 days but maybe we can plan a last hurrah where we take down all the bosses in a row ending with Pumpkin Moon?

I am thinking this Sunday night @ 6PM PST?

Travis   Admin wrote on 11/15/2013 at 09:47pm

That sounds like a blast! I'm game.

jdodson   Admin   Post Author wrote on 11/15/2013 at 10:55pm

Can't wait. Stock up on super neat bullets. Can't imagine what most bosses would do with a quad assault of mega sharks and crystal bullets.

The chlorophyte bullets are a lot of fun, but kinda suck for some bosses. I've messed around with them. Skeletron Prime, for example. You can't really target the head, because it auto-targets the closest enemy, so fights take longer than they should. Crystal bullets are a ton of fun though.

Awesome, thanks for doing that Travis. Basically we owned all the bosses and did well during the Pumpkin Moon. Travis did WAY better, his Spectre Armor strategy made him virtually unstoppable. I think in the end he was running low on mana potions :D

That said, server ends in 3 days on the 20th and I want to thank everyone for doing this. Best server ever.

Like last time i'll make a zip available of the world. When there is the Christmas update(or some neat update sooner) i'll turn on this same server again for a few days.
