There are a few more things about Starbound that I've thought about and want to share. Although I love the music, I often wish there was more of a variety of it, as I often hear the same music repeatedly, which gets old after a while. So that is one of my wishes for the final release.

I have begun to explore other sectors. I'm finding that the need for certain ores in other sectors is what's pushing me forward. I am currently in orbit above my first Tentacle planet in sector X, which is threat level 5. The other planets nearby are double that level. I believe this is the last sector which is some what disappointing (I don't want to finish with this game yet), there appears to still be a large variety of planets with various threat levels to explore. I think I've skipped the Delta sector, which I believe is needed for Durasteel bars, but really all you have to do is unlock that star map to get access to Durasteel.

I do have a Creature Capturing station, but have only used it to craft the peanut butter trap. I have a lot of other crafting stations on my ship, but not all of them. I finally made some room, which I've used mostly for chests. I also have a few things stacked like the furnace and metal workstation. My home planet still has that little structure I found and made into a home. It doesn't have very much space either. It is also where I do my farming, which I do very little of. I have used my home planet for boss fights, which has worked out well.

I think there are only one or two planets that I felt like I near fully explored, meaning I've wrapped around the surface at least once. I feel like I kind of get bored with a planet after a while. I guess this depends on what materials I'm looking for and how much time I spend on the planet.

Another thing that seems different from Terraria is that most of the ore seems to be right near the surface and clearly visible, although I often find myself going back to a place and seeing a spot I had not mined and wondered how I had missed it before. I don't find myself going very deep down beneath the surface to find precious ore like diamonds or titanium (although diamonds seem to be rare). I do visit caverns that I find, but they don't usually go very deep. I've also found lava, but I think it was a sub-biome and visible on the surface. Has anyone else noticed this or gone very deep down under a planet's surface?

So far I've visited forest, snow, desert, savanna, and grassland planets. There are still plenty of planets to explore. I do have a Survival Kit now, so I can go visit some moons and asteroids. I also found a Hero's Cap, which of course belongs to Link.

I'm still loving and enjoying the game. I wonder how it will be different when it is finally released (out of beta). I'm definitely looking forward to following further development.

Durasteel is crafted not mined (when you did the durasteel tech upgrade which unlocked sector x it also unlocked the crafting recipe).

I have mined down to the core in several planets -- it's fun exploring underground (you find dungeons, chests, stronger monsters, more rare materials). I don't want to spoil the exploration for you or I'd say more.

One thing I will mention that isn't really a spoiler, but you've hit the temporary end of progression. There is still more stuff to unlock, and stuff to craft etc. but you can mostly see the recipes now). I can't wait for the progression to be tweaked and finalized. If you hit the starbound blogs (at playstarbound.com) they mention that the current progression is going to be ripped out and the whole sectors thing is going away. So everything old will be new again :)

Also, it's way fun to bounce planet to planet, run around the surface and see what's there... I rarely go digging anymore.

On the tentacles planet, I managed to find myself in "Heck." So, I guess I've gotten kind of deep on a planet. I did take a sign that says, "Welcome to Heck." I did finally leave the planet after needing more Titanium, which I wasn't finding. I did find plenty of other rare materials, like diamonds, which I now have little use of.

I am now on an Asteroid mining Cerulium. I like that I've unlocked new ores to mine and things to craft, it's still what's pushing me to other planets or sectors.

Feel free to say as much as you want. Yeah, I've read about the sectors being redone and maybe at least one final world wipe. That just gives me more reason to explore and look forward to new updates.

I think it's cool finding random chests and things around.

Yeah, the variety of guns you find is fun, and the musical instruments. I've found like 8 or 10 different instruments (I lost a bunch due to the chest bug about a month ago). My kids love farming all the different seeds and trees and just building like crazy (and skyrails....)

Azurephile   Super Member   Post Author wrote on 05/02/2014 at 01:14am

Awesome, I haven't used any guns. I've been sticking to heavy damage dealing 2-handed weapons. I've probably found about half of the amount of instruments as you have. I haven't been doing much farming, but I have a chest full of various seeds. I also haven't been building, but I do have a Skyrail Station. I captured one creature, but an asteroid is no place for them as mine ended up falling and I lost it.

So, I'm currently working on crafting the final tier armor for my character. This makes me feel a bit disappointed in that I've gotten so far in the game in so little time. I know I spent more time in Terraria before getting top-tier armor, there was so much to do in order to get the necessary materials. In Starbound, I cam currently on a tundra planet with a threat level of 9, so I can get Rubium (and mix it with coal for my armor). This planet is definitely hard even with the second best armor in the game and a powerful weapon.

I've found a couple of prisons on this planet, but I didn't survive in them long enough to fully explore them. I'll need to revisit them when I have better armor. I believe I also made it to the planet's "Heck" layer. As I was mining away in a cave, I noticed lots of pixel capsules, which lead me to those small houses you can smash for pixels, too.

After I get the last armor pieces that I need, I'll do a bit more exploring. I want to visit at least one planet of every biome and I feel like I've already visited most of them. Still at this point in the game, I'm wanting more. I'm going to want more reason to move on to other planets as I'm not sure how long my desire for exploration will last.

Yep, once you hit top tier armor and weapons, there's not any "progression" left till they add more to the game. However, there's lots to explore and find and build :) But yeah, my kids spend way more time with it completely crafting whole worlds.

Also, level 10 planets are still tough even with top tier armor...

You can also get lost trying out mods... It's really interesting that a few mods have been integrated into the game, e.g. skyrails was a mod.

Azurephile   Super Member   Post Author wrote on 05/03/2014 at 03:56am

Well I have my top tier armor and weapons. I went back to the prison I found and cleaned it out. It wasn't as difficult this time, although I did rest in beds often as I found and needed them. I thought I had found a second prison, but I didn't realize that it was one prison and that I had wrapped around the world, thinking there was a prison to my left and right.

That is interesting that skyrails were in a mod and are now included in the game. I haven't done much with mods at all in any game. I haven't even tried out any for Minecraft. It's just one thing I haven't gotten into or too interested in, I may eventually look in to it.

So now it's time to do some more exploring. I think something I'd like to see in the final game is perhaps some more difficulty in obtaining higher armor and weapon sets so it takes longer to obtain them. As I've said, I spent a lot of time in Terraria to get them, which made the game more fun and enjoyable. I want to spend more time with Starbound, but am having little reason other than some exploration. I like when I'm exploring because I need something, which pushes me forward.

Because I kept dying on the tundra planet, I got to experience more of a variety in the music, which I really appreciated and enjoyed. That was something I wanted to see when I first played and spent so much time alive that the music didn't differ very often. I have the music stuck in my head.

Steam is telling me I've spent 153 hours playing Starbound, I hardly believe it. Granted I've been playing for long hours at a time, but it doesn't feel like I've spent that much time in the game. Steam says I've spent 188 hours playing Terraria and I thought I played it longer.

Azurephile   Super Member   Post Author wrote on 05/04/2014 at 12:07am

I think those Starbound hours include time having the launcher open, but not actually playing the game, as I've left that one open for a long time. I created a Steam account for my son and added my account to his Friends List and it said I was playing Starbound, when I actually only had the launcher open. I'm trying to figure out the Family Library Sharing part of Steam so that my son can play Starbound, but then again as long as I'm playing he won't be able to play it unless I get another copy, which wouldn't be a bad thing.

hardeyez wrote on 05/04/2014 at 11:23pm

The Family Library Sharing works great -- once you have it set up. You basically need to log into all computers with both accounts and allow each other (for me it was 3 computers with 2 kids :) Then they can play your games whenever you aren't playing anything (and vice versa). If you start playing, they get a "5 minute warning" and are able to save or come yell at you :)

I just bought the 4-pack to Starbound for the kids and me :)

Cool. I found out that my issue with getting it working is because I can't enable Steam Guard until I get that email address verified. Howevver, I have not yet recieved the verification email for that account. I may have to contact Steam support, it's probably an AOL issue (since my son's account is using my very old AOL email address).
