Starbound

Released on December 4, 2013 by Chucklefish

Developed by Chucklefish

In Starbound, you take on the role of a character who’s just fled from their home planet, only to crash-land on another. From there you’ll embark on a quest to survive, discover, explore and fight your way across an infinite universe.

You’ll encounter procedurally generated creatures and weapons, discover populated villages and abandoned temples. Explore planets dotted with dungeons, eyeball trees and treasure. Make use of over a hundred materials and over one thousand in-game objects to build a sprawling modern metropolis or a sleepy secluded cabin in the woods, and do all of it alone or with friends!

If you are curious how difficult it will be to add items to Starbound after launch a recent update from Starbound developer Mollygos should interest you. Outlining the step to easily create in game items I am thinking of a few I would like to add to the game when it ships. Like a placable Cheerful Ghost framed portrait for starters :D

Tiy also posted a few short blog posts about the new stuff that was added to the game last week as well and I have them linked below for your enjoyment.

Last week I published an interview with Curtis Schweitzer, one half of the amazing composer duo working on the Starbound score. In the interview I posted a question tossing out names for possible songs about the Novakids, one of the in game playable races.

One of the new Cues uses a name I suggested in the interview "I was the Sun (Before it was Cool)." I am very happy to see this happen and want to thank Curtis for using it! Curtis, if you need any more song titles, hit me up!

Check out the recent blog post about it as well as the other track Hylotl: "The Eternal Tide"

New issue of the Starbound Chronicle has dropped that covers some interesting game bits. They cover how your player race choice effects your ship layout and feel.

"Each of our races are pretty distinct from one another, and of course their ships should reflect that! From the wildly overgrown design of Floran ships to the cold ultramodern vessels of the Apex, the unique design of each starter ship may give players reason to reconsider their character choice!"

The issue also covers a few new tracks by Curtis Schweitzer and Solatrus and how to nab them for your collection.

In just a few weeks, Chucklefish has sold over a million bucks in preorders.

An indie game that very few people have actually gotten to play has generated this amount of interest just through videos and screenshots. At the risk of sounding cliche, this is a testament to what the indie gaming scene can do, and to what highly creative ideas can accomplish.

The title says it all, so I don't have much else to say except WHY DON'T I HAVE THIS GAME YET!?

Starbound is currently hovering at $979k of pre-orders. If the number tips to a cool million the pets goal will be unlocked. Tiy and team have been posting some awesome updates lately and as such, needed to share them with you... Because. I have to.

In the past few days they have dropped some awesome pictures of a new monster and Castle design.

But they posted some super-radery this morning in the form of two Twitch.tv videos. The first one is a game starting from the character creator taking the player to a few planets and it stops in a cave. The Twitch quality isn't great, but what is shown looks fantastic.

YouTuber's VenGoose Gaming just released a video cut up of all the released Starbound information. Its a really good primer on what we know the game will be and comes with some really nice in game visuals to give you a good picture of it.

Apparently I need to post every bit of Starbound information imaginable so bear with me until launch. During that time I may also rename the site to Cheerful Ghostbound, but you know, I might not... :D

Totally can't wait for Starbound to drop later this year. Heralded as a spiritual successor to Terraria in space with quests, planet exploration and a ton more awesomeness this game looks to be completely bad-ass. Recently Chucklefish released the Starbound Roadmap as well as added lots of information about its current completion level with all the games features.

Some of the larger features are mostly complete such as World & Universe Generation, Dungeons and Villages, Items & the User Interface. Many of the remaining items with much to go have quite a bit complete already.

When a more formal date drops for Starbound ill let you know. Can't wait to try this... Read All

Starbound is a really exciting looking upcoming open ended sandbox in space. You can read some of my thoughts about it here as a primer:

Recently the Starbound folks have released The Starbound Chronicle: Issue 1 that highlights some of the recent activities in how the game is progressing. In this issue they talk a bit about how in game Armor mods work:

"The effect of armor mods varies hugely. From armor that glows in the dark, to armor with a built in defib that activates if your energy bar is full when you die, shocking you back to life."

The game seems to be taking a turn to allow the game world a bit more depth by allowing... Read All

"Starbound begins with you fleeing your homeworld in a space shuttle, just as it’s destroyed by an unknown enemy. With nothing to guide it, the escape pod shoots into space without direction, becoming hopelessly lost in a sea of stars. As luck would have it, the space shuttle makes contact with an abandoned space station and an adventure begins that will take you hurtling across the universe. Starbound contains both quests and story driven missions, buried inside its vast sandbox universe.

So basically Starbound is a 2D sandbox in space with limitless procedurally generated planets to explore. They also mentioned you can "take over" certain planets if you want to,... Read All
