Apparently some companies still think a female protagonist can't sell games. Despite the successes of some (admittedly few) series like Tomb Raider, Portal, and Metroid, some refuse to publish a game with a female at the forefront.

"We had some [companies] that said, 'Well, we don't want to publish it because that's not going to succeed. You can't have a female character in games. It has to be a male character, simple as that."

When I read this I wondered what would have happened if Valve needed a publisher to get Portal out the door? Yikes.
