John Carmack, co-founder of id Software, has stepped down from the company. This is presumably to focus more on his work at Oculus, where he took on the position of CTO earlier in the year.
Tim Willits at id reached out to IGN to share the news. According to him, no active projects should be affected-- Carmack has finished the work on id Tech 5 and won't be leaving anything hanging.
I was afraid this would happen at the time, but it's sad to see. Carmack is responsible for so much of the fun I've had gaming over the years. It won't be the same without him.

Yeah, sad but... Kind of saw the writing on the wall when he left for Occulus. What else could a mountain climber do when you climb every mountain in the World and Mars? Start making immersive VR headsets!
That said, i've been thinking about iD and went on a YouTube spiral watching iD videos after I heard the news. It seemed after the launch of each game the time to the next one was so much longer it seemed to take forever to launch a game. VERY excited for Doom 4 but iD does seem like a different company than the one I grew up with.
Not that the focus under Zenimax is bad or it's doing bad work, I quite liked Rage actually.
That said, I am very excited about Doom 4 and whereas I am not really interesting in the Occulus right now, I am open to it changing my life.
