StarCraft: Brood War
on Battlenet
What better way to celebrate Retro Tuesdays than with playing a classic game, Starcraft: Broodwar. This game was a staple of my LAN parties until Starcraft 2 was launched and I have been really wanting to play it. So do you, this is why you need to join us and play it :D
Ill create a "cheerfulghost.com" Broodwar game with a password I will hand out in the comments the night of the event.
I will be playing as the Zerg.
Feel free to join us even if you can't make the 6pm start time, you can always catch the next game as I plan on running a few matches. Start with us VS bots and some team VS team matches if people are up for it.

I'll join in for a bit. I'll go Terran because they're easy.
I can probably do this. I'll either go Terran or Protoss depending on my mood.
I just reinstalled it on my PC. Wow. You know 640x480 doesn't age well at all.
The base game is solid, but CAN'T A BROTHER GET 1024x768?
I'm trying to get Battle.net to work, but I keep getting an error saying it can't identify my version. I downloaded the game through Battle.net, and patched to 1.16. Any one else have a similar issue?
I did it a few days ago and all was well. I try it again tonight and see whats up.
Just figured it out. If you're on Windows 7, use run as administrator.
I'm seriously struggling here. Using Administrator, compatibility mode (Vista and XP), etc. It just crashes as soon as I launch it. I played it a while back, since I upgraded to Windows 8, so I know it's not that. I tried a new display driver, nothing.
WTF.
I'll keep at it.
So I am on Win 7. Upgraded game downloaded from Battle.net.
Compat mode XP SP3, Disable Visual Themes & Disable Desktop Compression.
Lemmie try launching it.
Yeah, it launched ok. Menus look like crap, game is fine.
OK got it working. I'm not sure what changed. I decided to clear all the changes and go back to how it was before I started, so no compat, no Administrator mode, nothing, and now it works. Go figure.
:D Nice.

I can't join. It says the latency is too high.
Strange. Ok. Ill create another game.
Are you sure about that password? It won't let me in.
I just made a new game and it doesn't need a password.
Yep, getting latency too high
Do you both have SC2? Maybe we can just play that.
Same error. Are your ports properly set up?
I have SC2.
Yeah, same thing I do for any other game.
You have to port forward if you haven't

What a bunch of bullshit. I don't remember it being this hard to play on Battle.net back in the day.
Great, lets play that.
Yeah I have it, switching. :)
It has to optimize and update and stuff, not sure how long that will take.
Now, on another topic, I wish I had that battle.net launcher :)
I am in SC2 with the lobby open.
Me too.
You guys will have to have fun without me. I have so many updates to download for this thing it will be hours before it's playable.
Yeah we got a game in, vdogmr25 is pretty damn good.
I am going to do a special SC2 event, now with spawn copies and all we can all enjoy the Heart of the Swarm fun from even the Starter Edition. Which is pretty awesome.
