Yeah you've been able to play together for a while but these expeditions give more reason to. I haven't played in ages, I keep thinking that they're just going to keep adding more and more so I may as well wait a while longer.
Yeah, the fact that they keep updating the game really impresses me. I wonder what more they might add to it. I really like it when games continue to put out new content even years after it's original release.
This game has SERIOUSLY improved, I'm so impressed!!!! Lots of people are still playing, too. Now when you visit Nada and Pollo in the Space Anomaly, you'll not only see that the place has been renovated, and there are new NPCs there, but that's where you'll also find LOTS of other players. There are so many that I've often entered at the same time as about two other people, causing our ships to kind of "rubber band" upon entry. The Space Anomaly clearly connects to every galaxy. Once someone leaves, they are returned to the galaxy they came from. It's a great hub for players to meet, chat, team up, and trade no matter what galaxy they were in before entry.
Itâs great to see the game improve. I wonder at what point they might have to work on something else? Itâs not a subscription game so Iâm not entirely sure how itâs continuing to be funded.
Yeah, that befuddles me, too, but as I mentioned, lots of people are playing it. There's cross-platform play, too. I've seen players on Steam (by the Steam logo beside their name) and others (with a controller icon by their name). I just watched all the trailers, I may have missed some of them before. I saw a lot in them that I still haven't seen, but I've also seen a lot in my game play these last couple of days that I've never seen before. A giant worm-like subterranean creature scared the crap out of me while I was near my base doing some resource gathering. I'd never seen anything like it. I didn't get a chance to scan it, it was too fast. I tried to chase it with my Roamer (Exocraft vehicle), but I couldn't find it.
Wow it's been a while since you played hasn't it Greg? Yeah they updated the anomaly ages ago to kinda be the hub to meet up with other players. It's just insane how different the game has become over the years.
And oddly I think they're still selling pretty well. You'd think that anyone who wanted it would have it already but it's currently the 74th best seller on steam. That isn't super high on the list but considering it was made years ago, and the PC version of RDR2 is in the 50s or so, it's nothing to sneeze at.
I'd love to see exactly how much money they've pulled in from it.
Yeah, it's been a long time since I put some serious game play into it.
From what I read on Steam, it seems that this is now in the game (I don't have it installed, so I wasn't sure until I did some more reading). That same... Read All It's been a long time since I've seriously played No Man's Sky. I mostly played it around it's launch and not too much after. It's received a lot of updates since then, so there's a lot of content I've not yet explored. Well, it looks like NMS is "the gift that keeps on giving." A new trailer has been released showing off the Companions update and honestly, I think it looks great. Maybe it's because I've always loved animals. Maybe it's the high quality of the video that impressed me, I'm not sure, but it looks cool!
From what I read on Steam, it seems that this is now in the game (I don't have it installed, so I wasn't sure until I did some more reading). That same article also says that they're excited to show us "what else [they] have planned on the roadmap ahead."

What do you think about all this NMS content we're still getting? Have you explored any of it and have something to share? What do you think about this one?
I am incredibly impressed with how good NMS seems to have become! I don't currently have a PC, but if I ever buy a new one, I look forward to playing this again.
I'm still incredibly impressed they've not only given us a lot of new content and improvements since it's launch, but that they also have more planned. I don't think many games get this kind of treatment even years after launch. Perhaps it has to do with the rocky start (though I think I was fine with it). Maybe it's because the devs just have a lot they've wanted to add to it. But, I think this just definitely makes for a better game. I feel like any other typical dev team would have given up on it by now, perhaps already have released a second.
I wonât go into all of them here, because there are so many. But here are the highlights.

- VR support, for various PC VR systems and PSVR. And you can use standard controls or motion controls.

- New story elements have been added to stitch together the multiple stories that have been added since launch.
- Crafting, tech learning, and language learning have gotten a significant overhaul to make them more accessible and give players more choice. For example, the tech you learn is now in a tree, where you can pick and choose which path to take for what is important to you at the time.
- The space anomaly is now a player hub, and Nada and Polo now have a bunch of new friends with them that can give you new story and missions.
- NPC animations have been improved, theyâll now walk around and interact with the environment.
- You can now ride some of the creatures you find on your travels.
- Base building has been overhauled, and theyâve added powered objects and logic to the mix to make some more advanced bases.
- One of the most requested features (though probably as a joke) has been implemented: you can now sit in chairs.
But really, this isnât nearly all. If youâve seen it in the game, it has probably been tweaked in some way. Check out the full patch notes here:

I was thinking about writing about this when I saw it a while ago. I thought about asking if you were going to do that. Again, I think you do a better job. Your bullet points make the post look good. Maybe I should take some inspiration, or maybe I shouldn't be a copy cat.
Are you going to play this again? I'm not sure, myself. I don't actually have it installed on my SSD yet, so I'd pretty much have to redownload it (I don't want to run my games off of the HDD).
FYI you can keep games downloaded and move them between your HDD and SSD. But I donât think youâd run into much of a hitch running this one from the HDD. Itâs the same few textures just arranged in interesting ways programmatically so thereâs less taxing on the hard drive and more on the CPU to build the world.
I have tried it on both and it only improves loading by a couple seconds so I let it live on the HDD.
But yeah Iâm going to try some of the new things out. Not sure if Iâll make a new game or not. Depending on how good the VR is (and how sick it makes me) I may finally properly play my PS4 copy.
I kept many of my installed games where they were on the HDD. I copied some over, that I wanted installed on the SSD. Unfortunately, Steam still re-downloaded the games that I moved over. It's ok though. Yeah, I know how to run games from a second folder.
You have VR? I'd be interested in how that works, looks, or plays. I have VR ready hardware, except for the headset. I'm not sure when I might get into VR, but it's not really a priority for me right. I'm still waiting for reality to bring us the Holodeck from Star Trek. I think that could be the end of society as we know it though. LOL
Do you think you'll write more about this update after playing it some? I pretty much always start a new game, I've never made it to the center. I'm not sure whether or not I want to jump back in the game right now. I did watch a video of Sean Murray talk about this update and how it basically includes three main features. He was smiling the whole time he talked about it, which I thought was cool. Here's a link to that: https://youtu.be/zAo7b4HjtjQ
That's weird, it should just move it right over. Oh well. I guess you could do the manual...
1. Rename the folder
2. Tell steam to uninstall it
3. Tell Steam to install it
4. Stop the install
5. Move that folder to the new location
6. Start the install
It should just reverify if you do that, I did that a few times before they implemented the ability to change it.
And yeah PSVR is pretty neat. Very cheap way to get into VR. It's not as good as the Vive I wouldn't imagine but it's great for what it is.
I may or may not write more, kinda depends on how neat it is.
When I installed the SSD, I put Windows on it and made it my primary drive. I want the SSD to contain my regularly used files (like games and apps), and the HDD to be my back up or storage space (for other files like docs and stuff). I created a fresh install of Windows on the SSD and so I had to install everything else fresh as well. So, Steam did not see that any games were installed (because they weren't). I tried copying game directories from the HDD to the SSD. It seemed like Steam was verifying the files, but still downloaded them anyway. I'm really not even sure that I'm noticing a difference in game load times with the SSD. The SSD definitely makes Windows boot incredibly faster. Maybe I did something wrong with how I tried to install games to the SSD and maybe I'll pay more attention to that in the future. The SSD is a bit limited, so I don't really want to install a bunch of stuff on it. I'd still like to install games on it just to see if there's any performance/loading differences. Thanks for the input, I appreciate it. :)
Back to NMS, I'm just not sure I feel like jumping in it again. I feel like I've been through the beginning quite a few times and don't necessarily want to repeat it, although I always want to start out fresh with a new update. Perhaps with this new update I'll enjoy it more. The last time I played, I got stuck on a mission and pretty much gave up.
Oh! That makes more sense now. Yeah some games will have a big difference, some not so much. Fallout 76 seemed to load about 10 seconds faster on SSD.
And yeah, thatâs kinda why I havenât started over with each update, Iâve already put so much into it.
I wish my computer could handle the game! I bought it launch day and dealt with *all* the issues/bugs/crashes, and still thought it was pretty incredible. But it was missing so much that I expected it to have. Watching all these updates the past few years has made me super jealous!
...this is one of those games that the potential sucks me in so much, I might be willing to buy a PS4 and PSVR. (Although it likely would turn into yet another system that just sits there like both my Classics and Wii U lol)
Yeah Adam, I think theyâve gone well past what most expected it to have.
Going to be putting my PSVR to use tomorrow night on this. I'll be sure to report back on how it goes. :)
After 355 hours and almost a year after having played it, today I learned something about NMS. You can claim abandoned ships and keep your current ship! I saw this done by one of my favorite YouTubers, Paul Soares Jr.. I did a little Googling and it seems that there's a bug with this in that you have to put the inventory from your old ship into the new one and then you can claim the new one, for free, actually, I think. I don't know if that "bug" still exists, but it wasn't too long ago that people wrote about it. Do any of you have any experience with this?
Ok, so I tried it out, things are different. Why did it have to spawn me at a toxic and then a boiling planet? Uh. Yeah I started a new game three times. I don't intend to make note of all the changes I noticed here. I did get my star ship repaired, but I haven't taken off yet. One thing I do want to point out though is the GeForce Experience settings. They were telling me the game was already using optimal settings. I looked at the graphic/video options in game and the preset was on "Enhanced." I switched it to "Ultra" to see if I'd notice any difference, which I didn't. Travis did tell me once that you can't always trust the settings in GE. I think this may perhaps be due to a change in the game's settings and maybe GE didn't get updated. At least, that's what I think. I think the settings are different, but I could be wrong. What preset are you running with? Do you notice anything different between presets? If, so, what?
I never run with any preset, I fine tune it all, but Iâve got basically everything maxed with motion blur, chromatic aberration, and scanlines turned off so I donât get motion sickness.
And yeah you can claim those found ships for free, since youâre finding them randomly thereâs nobody to pay (though I think they added NPCs to some of these)
After reinstalling Windows again, I found out how to successfully move your games from the old Steam directory to the new directory without having to reinstall or redownload them. Since I wasn't doing a fully clean install, Windows created a Windows.old folder, which contained Steam in Program Files (x86). This is easy! Install Steam and then exit it. This creates a new Steam folder. Then copy (or move) all of the contents of the old Steam folder into the new one, open Steam, and everything's there! :) So, I just copied from C:\Windows.old\Program Files (x86)\Steam\ to C:\Windows\Program Files (x86)\Steam\. I tried to copy them over with Steam and Steam wasn't having it. Before, I had copied the individual game folders over and Steam still had to redownload and install them. This "new-to-me" method I discovered mostly on my own worked perfectly! I just thought I'd necro this a bit and add it here just FYI, in case some one here needs to use it.
I've been installing my games to an attached (on Windows) USB drive. This means game boots are slower but once i'm in things are fast. One upside is I don't have to reinstall everything when I reinstall or do something to Windows or move my games to a new PC.

With the end of the year packed with game releases, I haven't even had a chance to try Abyss much yet. When I DO finally get around to No Man's Sky again, it's going to be packed with new stuff.
You really gotta hand it to Hello Games. Two years on and they aren't slowing down; if anything they seem to be speeding up. From a pretty intense flop at launch, they've created one of the best games out right now.
https://www.nomanssky.com/visions-update/
Thanks to playing Fallout 76 I've thought it'd be cool if NMS added a voice chat, that'd make it easier to play with others, heck even a text chat would be nice.
NMS has text chat, remember how random words seemed to be edited out back when I hopped into your game?
Yeah, now I remember!
I was just coming here to post this. They are really pushing major updates lately, and they still say this is only the beginning. I can't wait to see what's coming.
Beat ya to it LOL! I made news of it in the chat, was going to add it onto your old update post, but then decided to just post it.
Yeah, apparently the game is getting some kind of weekly updates. These major ones aren't the weekly ones. They did say there's more to come. I, too, wonder what that could be.
"The chat"? Oh! The CG Steam chat? I haven't gotten any notifications for that in ages.
The weekly updates are ok, very brief quests.
Yeah the Steam chat. I post news there sometimes, usually about free games to grab. I think it's the perfect place to share that kind of stuff.
I tried this out for a few minutes, just long enough to jump in the lake in front of my house, and wow itâs so much better to get around underwater. And really pretty down there too
Awesome! I haven't played in a while. I was doing a mission that required me to collect a certain mineral to increase my standing with one of the factions. I'm really glad they fixed the swimming thing, I hated swimming before. Thanks for the input!
We've known for a little while that NEXT was coming, and that it was going to be the biggest update yet, and include more fleshed out multiplayer (the Atlas Rises update gave us a very rudimentary version with "glitches in the simulation" that were other players). This trailer is our first real peek inside.
The NEXT update is free, no paid DLC here, and it launches along with the Xbox One version coming the same day, July 24th.

UPDATE! I initially listed the changes I could see in the trailer, but Sean has posted some info on the Playstation blog. Here's a peek at the changes:
Multiplayer
- Team up a small team of friends and explore the universe together, or be joined by random travellers.
- You can help friends to stay alive, or prey on others to survive.
- Tiny shelters or complex colonies that you build as a team are shared for all players.
- Fight as a pirate or a wingman in epic space battles with friends and enemies.
- Race exocraft across weird alien terrains, creating race tracks and trails to share online.
- Character customisation allows you to personalise your appearance.
Visual Overhaul
- The game is fully playable in third or first person, both on-foot and in ship.
- Planetary rings and improved space visuals make space more beautiful than ever.
- Dramatically improved planetary terrain generation, ground textures, water and clouds bring the environment to life.
- Significantly more detail added to ships, NPCs and buildings.
Unlimited Base Building
- Bases can now be built anywhere on any planet.
- Dramatically increased base building complexity and size limits.
- Hundreds of new base parts.
- Own multiple bases.
Command Freighters
- Assemble and upgrade a fleet of frigates and command them from the bridge of your freighter.
- Send your fleet out to into the universe, or deploy them to help you as you explore a specific system.
- Improved freighter base building allows a truly custom capital ship.
- Invite your friends aboard and take on challenging multiplayer missions from the Galactic Commision Station on your bridge.
I'm looking forward to the lore that ties all this together. How can we suddenly see other simulation test subjects? Are there still multiple galaxies (which could fracture the playerbase and limit multiplayer)? What other small fixes and changes are there? Lots of questions are still present but this should stimulate your appetite for more No Man's Sky!
Sean's full blog post: https://blog.us.playstation.com/2018/07/17/no-mans-sky-next-is-a-massive-free-update-launching-july-24-on-ps4/
Ok at first, before watching the trailer, I wasn't too thrilled about the multiplayer, I just didn't feel like it was something I really needed. But after watching the trailer, I think it looks cool! In the first part, I thought (and hoped) that what the players were wearing was underwater gear, because the normal gear sucks underwater, at least swimming does. I knew this update was coming for a little while. I'm looking forward to jumping back in the game when this releases, I may start a fresh game again.
I might jump back in the game as well to check this out. We might have to set up a CG group in game!
Greg I agree that swimming always felt clunky but it also kinda makes sense that you move slower in water. Even if they do nothing else with swimming, I think the third-person camera will help. Seeing the swimming animation may make it feel less cumbersome.
But Iâm hoping for some more water improvements too. It looks like you can build bases underwater now so Iâm hoping that extra.
And Adam: yes. Most definitely!
I see that, Travis. I hope they fixed it, too, but it does make some sense as you say. Also, I hope you feel better soon! I overlooked that part when I left my first comment.
I agree with Adam as a CG group is great idea. I wonder how we'll go about meeting up. I wonder if they'll explain how to when they release the update, or if they're just going to leave it up to us to figure out (I kind of doubt that though).
Iâm sure theyâll explain it somehow, and itâll probably be pretty intuitive. As it stands right now, itâs kinda hard to find people but they havenât had that focus before. The teleporters in stations and bases could have an option or something.
And thanks for the well wishes! Some bad shrimp.
This update looks to fix nearly all the criticism leveled at the game at launch.
I imagine each person called this game "No Mans Lie" will retract their further statements and now call it "No Mans Actually The Full Game Will Come Two Years Later."
Jokes aside, this looks like they are getting ever closer to the 3D version of Starbound.
I wonder what those bipedal mech looking things are. Are they things that we hop in and go walking around in or is it something that maybe we pilot remotely?
They look like larger sentinels. If you really anger the sentinels they send out walkers that look like that but theyâre about 1/3 the size. Since there were a few people running with them, Iâm imagining itâs something we can hack to work with us or something.
And yeah Jon, the SEAN LIED ABOUT MULTIPLAYER rhetoric was overblown but based in truth. Basically all the other launch complaints had been worked out except for this one.
Check out this trailer mashup on reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyTheGame/comments/8zmo0u/how_this_game_has_changed_3/
They basically re-created the original trailer with the new stuff. Interesting to see how far the game has come but... even still I'd love to play the game with that original art style/color palette. By the time the game released they'd changed quite a bit.
Also Greg-- you mentioned how they might implement playing together. If you check this screen there's a clear portal placed on someone's base. That's absolutely new, and looks more like the portals you find out in the world and activate with glyphs, rather than the teleporters that are automatically in bases and space stations

@Travis, oh yeah, I see it! I forgot about sentinels, although it did look like those were with the players. Perhaps, like you said, we can hack them and turn them toward our favor. What would they do for us? Scouting perhaps? Man it's been so long since I've played, it's been 10 months.
Wow hereâs a list of some minorish changes coming.

That sounds like theyâve made multiplayer very easy and added some depth to the game.

Man that looks exciting! I thought I saw on the website that it was coming on the 26th or 28th. Did you see this, too? I didn't see it when I went back to look. I want to know when it's coming.
Tuesday, the 24th:
https://www.nomanssky.com/2018/05/no-mans-sky-next-multiplayer-and-release-date/
I should have put that in the post. On it!
In addition, since the Xbox version of this is a new release for the console, the new update is on the disc. There may be some updates on release day, but the core of it is definitely there. And as frequently happens, the street date was broken. So, if you want to search them out you can find videos of the new stuff.
A couple highlights I noticed:
The water is so great. Itâs way improved over the current water. And it looks like it reacts to things. You can fly right over it and tip your wing into it and it will create a ripple effect.
Space stations have been heavily redesigned and kinda look like the Citadel from Mass Effect. Thereâs way more going on now. It actually looks like a space station instead of ... a boring place that people land.
Freighters have gotten a redesign and some new missions to spruce them up. You can build specific things for them to get new abilities.
We knew clouds would cast a shadow but it seems that storms actually follow cloud formations properly, and some really great weather effects have been added.
Building seems to be much easier than before.
Thanks, Travis! I should have dug a bit more for that. I found it some time ago, but I guess I lost it. Anyway, all of that sounds really good, I'm looking forward to jumping back in the game.
Itâs out! Yaaaaaayyy! Canât wait to dive in tonight.
I like how the scanner works now. I forgot about keys such as X and Z. If you want to change to first person you have to use the X menu, go to Utilities, and select the camera view option. Z is used to build things, although you can also pick some things back up and carry them with you. I tried numerous times to spawn a new game on a planet that wasn't hazardous, but that didn't work, so I settled. I eventually left the planet. Minerals are constantly changing names with these updates. They've added some things that make playing a bit more involved, like having to refine minerals. Building is different, you start out by building wooden things. For some reason I couldn't get through my door, or even find nearby ground that was flat enough for a building. In the end....things are different, although perhaps for the better overall.
After the third major update, Atlas Rises, No Man's Sky is what it was meant to be.
A common criticism of the game was that it's as wide as the ocean and as deep as a puddle. I never thought it was that dire, but the depth has improved dramatically. A game with "Mostly Negative" reviews on Steam has achieved "Very Positive" recent reviews for the first time.
So what makes things different now?

After the third major update, Atlas Rises, No Man's Sky is what it was meant to be.
A common criticism of the game was that it's as wide as the ocean and as deep as a puddle. I never thought it was that dire, but the depth has improved dramatically. A game with "Mostly Negative" reviews on Steam has achieved "Very Positive" recent reviews for the first time.
So what makes things different now?
First, there's a new main story, separate from the Atlas Path (which has also been tweaked). The fourth race is revealed, and you learn more about the mystery of the simulation you're in. Interestingly, there's a story reason for why multiplayer is appearing now (more on that later), and why it's only "glitches" of other players. The ends of the Atlas Path and actually traveling to the center of the galaxy still do the same things they did before, but you now have another option for how to proceed.
Second, there's just more variety in everything. There are more plant and animal types (including those giant animals from the E3 trailer), and more planet biomes. Many more blueprints to have focused and varied builds for your ship and multitool. Each ship type (including the new, rare exotic ship type) handles differently now, and comes with a set of bonuses for different types of gameplay. Different star systems have a conflict rating and economy rating to determine the danger and trade in that system.
Portals now allow you to easily share coordinates to anywhere in the galaxy and go check out other people's amazing creations or interesting planets.
Mission boards in space stations let you build up faction standing and get rewards for doing things you'd probably already be doing anyway.
Crashed freighters on planets add to the landscape and offer a way to get some loot. Mostly, for me, they make the galaxy feel more alive.
And yes, multiplayer has been added, in a limited fashion. You can see other players as a glowing orb, and you can hear voice chat within a certain radius. There's no other interaction possible, with the exception of making a lasting monument that you and this other player met. Imagine Journey with voice. The plot reason for this (as explained in the release announcement) is that the simulation is experiencing issues, so other subjects in the same area are starting to bleed through. I took a trip to the former Galactic Hub, a project started by players even before the portals were activated, on the day the hub was moving to a new location (the new update significantly changed some planets, leaving the Galactic Hub capital a bit on the cold side). There was a party in the old capital to celebrate the move, and there were tons of orbs in a cacophony at first. But after a few minutes I saw what this limited multiplayer could offer: emergent gameplay. Someone set up an exocraft race, and I watched what may have been the first real-time exocraft race.
Yes, there are other new features. Redesigned UI, tech and cargo inventory slots, lower flight capability, crafting improvements, and so on. Those are nice quality of life improvements, but for me, it's all about depth. The game now has deeper gameplay, deeper story, deeper mystery. No Man's Sky, even at launch, scratched an itch I never knew I had. But the magic did eventually wear off. Even with base building and freighters and exocraft, there was only so much you could do before it got a little boring. Those beautiful planets that were pieced together procedurally used the same set of components, and once you'd seen them all, the newness wore off a bit. Now it's so much better in every imaginable way, and the replay value has skyrocketed.
If you were interested in this game before, but were holding off to see if there were any massive improvements, this is what you were waiting for.

I often remembered that depth quote as I played the game, it felt too fitting. However, just as you say, the game got deeper. I liked it to begin with, but some things got old, like trying to scan every fauna on a planet. I don't worry about those scans as much. I like that now there is plenty to do and reasons behind many of them.
I recently deleted the game that I had going and created a new one, mostly because of your warning regarding Atlas Rises and old saved games. I'm ok with it and I think it's a great time to start over from the beginning. I'd still like to be able to use freighters to transport my exocraft to different planets instead of having to build an exobay on planets I want to ride around on. I'd also like to see Nanite Clusters not take up a space in the inventory. Other than that, I can't think of much more I want from this game. I'm not too concerned with multiplayer, but it does sound interesting. Thanks for reporting on that.
In the end, the game has grown quite well in the last year. I think it's a better game now.
> I'd also like to see Nanite Clusters not take up a space in the inventory.
Oh man, you and me both. There's still plenty of interface tweaks they could make to make things more comfortable to use, and that's on the top of my list.
I should try to remember my minor current complaints about the game. I had a bug upon trying to exit my Nomad, I was placed some distance away. I did establish a base, but wasn't happy with the planet, due to the weather and lack of land mass. Luckily, I found a much better planet and moved.
I previously had an issue, when I first tried out the Missions Board. I accepted multiple missions and had trouble finding where I was supposed to go for of them. There was no icon for it on my map. I created a new save since then and decided to accept missions one at a time and haven't run into the issue again.
I have progressed a bit into the story and I can see how deep the game got. It's like they released a somewhat incomplete game. This year they have made a lot of progress in adding some of the finishing touches, especially the story. Really, I think things are a lot more "polished" now.
The game has crashed on me at two or three times recently. Otherwise, it's pretty stable.
GeForce Experience optimizes my AA settings to Ultra-SSAA x4, but the game seems to often change it to something else. I don't even see that setting in-game, the AA options don't include that one. I guess it doesn't matter too much, I'm not sure if I've seen a difference.
Don't use GeForce experience for this one (or like... most games). With NMS they are using old settings. It'll try to "optimize" your game to settings that don't exist.
Yeah, that seems to be what it's doing.
I progressed even more into the story. I know the significance of "16" or what it means. I made it to the point where you decide which path to take; Atlas, center, or free exploration. So, I feel like I've gone through the major changes of Atlas Rises and am now back to the game as it was before. I know my old save was about a year old and even after multiple trips through black holes, I don't think I was even close to the center. How about you? Have you made it to the center?
I don't like the new terrain manipulator. I prefer the old one. I tried the new one out, but wasn't successful at it, maybe I need to get more serious with it and figure it out.
I really do like a lot of what they've done to the game in the last year. I might not be able to think of them all at the moment. I do feel like I'm spending a lot less time switching to new ships. After my first ship, I found a really big class B ship and I've had it since. It has a lot of slots, even if I haven't repaired all of them, which is another new feature I like.
What do you mean new terrain manipulator? It was brand new with 1.3. Before that you could chuck grenades to blow up the ground (you still can). Unless I'm not sure what you mean. But I don't love the terrain manipulator. Its charge runs out so fast and it's faster to grenade things to remove ground, and adding ground is tedious.
And yeah I made a mad dash for the center once I felt like I was basically done with 1.0. So you finished the Artemis path, you got the choice at the end. I won't spoil what happens at the center but I will say it's similar to that.
Yeah, I miss the grenades and yeah I finished the Artemis path.
You still have grenades!
To clarify, you may not have them if you've replaced your multitool and didn't install them in the new one. I *think* my first few multi-tools back in the day had them already built but I could be making that up.
But every time I switch I forget to install stuff until I really need it.
Cool, thanks. I probably just haven't found that tech yet.
I miss the grenades as well! Now that Nanites are a thing, it's take a lot longer to find new tech. It used to be almost every waypoint with buildings had some blueprint in it. It's probably better balanced now, but was much easier before :)
I'd be shocked if you haven't, they have those plans weighted so that you get the tech for the base components early. But, if you've been focusing on Artemis and haven't done a lot of exploring and found those buildings that give you the tech, that could be why.
I'm pretty sure I've not found a grenade blueprint yet (I restarted my game after the newest update). I believe back in the day, you could simply find blueprints everywhere, but now where I used to find blueprints, I'm finding Nanite Clusters, and I don't think to trade them in at the trade stations often, but that seems to be the main source of blueprints now.
Mm yes. It seems like a lot of times those in the space station don't have the basic ones when you need them. "Those buildings that give you tech" should have been more specific: the buildings with NPCs that give you tech.
The outposts and things with NPCs that do a speech check give you the blueprints like they used to. Sometimes you'll only get standing, sometimes credits, but it seems it's the same rotation of blueprints for the ones that do. I got a lot of blueprints that way.
And Nada and Polo still give them to you as well.
Here's a brief rundown:
- A new story. the lore of Atlas continues and the path has been reworked some. The NPCs you could have in your home have changed dialogue to fit the new story. Apparently, there's 30 hours worth of story content here. The long-rumored fourth race is here!
- The galaxy has been redone again. Your home planet may look completely different now. The variety has been significantly increased.

- The galaxy has been redone again. Your home planet may look completely different now. The variety has been significantly increased.
- They've added economy, wealth, and conflict ratings to each system, and those ratings affect what you can find.
- You can now find crashed freighters on planets and loot them.
- You can manipulate terrain with a multitool upgrade.
- There's a mission board in every galaxy with procedural missions.
- The amount of items you can craft and find have increased dramatically.
- The visor looks very different, and scanning can help you find rare items.
- The menu UI has been overhauled, to accommodate a new ship inventory system (you now have separate areas for equipment and cargo) and a more in-depth reputation system.
- Portals are now functional! You can input the coordinates of planets to transport to them. Which helps with...
- Multiplayer! In a sense. "Glitches in the simulation" are causing fragments of other participants to show through, and voip works within a certain radius. Basically, it's the Fable 2 take on multiplayer where everyone else is a floating orb. BUT it's the start of more to come, and still neat.
- You now have the ability to fly low to the ground instead of hitting an invisible barrier far above the surface.
- There are new ship models, some of which are only available in high-wealth systems.
- Tons, tons more. But those are the big ones.

And just a reminder, No Man's Sky is $25 on PSN, GOG, Steam, and Humble right now so if you don't have it, now's a good time to get it!
I might have to check this out this weekend...
Sweet!
Awesome news. I DEMAND MORE THOUGHTS AFTER YOU PLAY IT MORE!
OK after a couple hours, it's immense. Before it felt like there was little to do aside from explore, but now it feels like TOO much.
A significant chunk of that is due to the fact that save files from previous versions are a bit bugged. You lose all your NPCs at your base and when you get them back (by rehiring them) they are at the end of their quest line, but in this new update they teach you new blueprints... which you can't get because they won't give you any quests... but you need those blueprints for other quests.
So my plan for now is to let it sit for a while and maybe 1.3.1 will work out some bugs. They've been good in the past about the first round of fixes coming out soon after release. I just feel certain that if they tested 1.3 with a 1.2 save file they would have seen this already-- it seems to be universal.
BUT for people starting fresh it seems to be a good experience all around. Well-balanced, nice progression. It may be time to start over, but ships are expensive!
But on the plus side, the new stuff is great. The lore-building quests are intriguing and handled well.
That sucks about the NPC issue. But, yeah, there were things with this update that made me think that it might be a good time to restart. I don't think I spent much time playing the previous update. I was disappointed that you can only use vehicles on one planet. I thought they should have made it so you could take them with you to other planets, perhaps by freighter. I imagined landing a freighter and then being able to roll out your vehicle. That's something I'd like to see.
> I was disappointed that you can only use vehicles on one planet. I thought they should have made it so you could take them with you to other planets
1.2.something addressed that. You can make them anywhere now
Yeah, you can make them whereever, but that requires you gather the necessary materials on each planet you want to use it. I like the idea of building one and taking it with you. Even if a freighter doesn't land, it'd be cool to get it some distance above the surface and just ride out of it with your vehicle and land on the surface. That would be fun.
It had been so long since I played, I decided to sttart a new game. I have to say, compared to when this game first came out, it looks beautiful! And it started out beautiful, so it's even better now.
I started on a planet that doesn't have many resouces, so I spent an hour or so just trying to repair all my equipment. I am just wandering around the planet now and haven't flown my ship once. There definitely is more on a planet, I think I'm going to like it again.
@Adam did you make it to the center of the galaxy in your old save? I'm tempted to start a new one, too, now especially since Travis brought that issue to our attention. It's been so long, I can't even seem to remember what starting out was like.
I'm glad you say the game looks beautiful. That's a part of it I definitely want to check out!
I started a new save, after backing up my old one. The only issue I've run into so far (after a few minutes or so) was that a question mark still appears on a waypoint after I've discovered it. I tried to get a screenshot in time to show this bug. http://steamcommunity.com/id/gregopeck/screenshot/848219940810532147
*Update* Reloading the game seems to have resolved this.
I never did make it to the center. I never really followed that path, and when I wanted to, it was super difficult to get back on track lol
Greg, I'd say the reason they didn't make the exocraft platforms work that way is because they want there to be some effort involved so you couldn't just spam them everywhere. BUT, it's as simple as destroying the platform (to get all your materials back) and then rebuilding it on a new planet.
There are some workarounds for the various problems people are having with old saves and quest progress. Hopefully they'll fix those soon.
And, there's already a 1.3.1 to address some of the worst game crashing bugs! Some were getting hard crashes to desktop under certain conditions.
Yeah, I agree with your reasoning regarding exocraft. I thought destroying the platform only gave a fraction of the materials needed. If it gives all, then that's cool.
I like starting out fresh, because of the new stuff like missions. I'm having trouble locating a "secret depot" where I'm supposed to deliver some resources. I think it may be because I don't have a signal booster. I need to look into it.
I found this to be a good list of current issues and bugs people are having. I'm still trying to figure out how I'm supposed to locate a secret depot for a secondary mission I'm on. I've collected enough Heridium and the map points me in the current system, but otherwise I have no other navigational guidance. I've already completed a few similar secondary missions, but "A Cog in the Machine" doesn't seem to be letting me complete it. I may be missing some tech.

Has the day/night cycle always been part of the game? I don't remember it ever being so dark lol
@Adam I seem to think I recall an issue about the game being too dark and there was some kind of video setting for it. I did a quick Google search, check it out and see if any of it helps.
https://www.google.com/search?q=no+man%27s+sky+too+dark&oq=no+man%27s+sky+too+dark&aqs=chrome..69i57.5887j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
The whole game isn't too dark, it's just really dark at night lol. Hopefully there's a light upgrade to my exosuit or flashlight upgrade to my multi-tool. I just don't remember a day/night cycle at all :)
There was always a day/night cycle but they darkened the nights to make things more immersive. The flashlight is now useful! (and you already have one-- press T!)
Oh! Lol, awesome. Thanks!
We have some new patch notes! I'm still reading to see if the issue I had was resolved. I did try starting a new game (again), take things slower, and not have more than one active side mission at the same time. I haven't played in a while, so I'll just have to play more to see if my issue is resolved.

Read back for 1.31 and 1.32 as well, those might have fixed your issue.
Or today's experimental 1.34 if you're on the experimental branch (I recommend it)

Looks really cool! I have tried to get back into NMS, but with so many other games, I get distracted. Maybe some day as I really loved it when it was launched.
Well when you do eventually get back into it (assuming you do), you'll see lots of new content and probably love it even more. :)
