A few Skyrim news bits I thought were worth sharing. Looks like Bethesda is starting to move its 1.7 update patch through the works. It will be released on XBox 360, PS3 and Steam and contains a few notable bits including stability fixes, general optimizations, bug fixes and updates the the dragon shouts via Kinect.

Also looks like later this week Bethesda will be talking about the release date for Dawnguard on PS3 and Steam. Looks like the XBox 360 exclusive lockout window is over and my guess is they will talk about it when they show next week at Quakecon. Well, not entirely my guess a few have speculated about it.

This morning I read a really interesting article about the rise and fall of Curt Shillings 38 studios. A few things I learned from the Article:

1. 38 Studios bought Big Huge Games. Big Huge Games created Rise of Nations and Kingdom of Amalur.
2. The studio got a loan of about 50 million dollars from Rhode Island government by moving headquarters.

I wonder if this means the state of Rhode Island owns Rise of Nations, Kingdoms of Alamlur and the other 38 studios IP?

A few things that caught my eye?

The Stash Is Persistent
Customize Your Character (shown in image above)
Beautiful Aurora Borealis in Pandora's Frozen Tundra (I enjoy awesome environments that immerse you in the game.

Some people felt the enemies in Borderlands were easy so 2K made them much more difficult. A recent article on Joystiq draws a picture of how much harder they can be.

Sick. No literally, sick, the picture of the Goliath is kind of sad and disgusting. A robot head and human body? Wow.

I'm going to be getting this on PS3 as well. Can't wait to adventure on Pandora again! Although I still need to go back and finish the last two expansions for the first Borderlands :P

The server will be open for business starting today(6/27/2012) at 8PM PST at the following location:

I decided there will be a game password, so hit me up in the comments or on Steam for it. I want to limit it to our direct friends to protect against any kind of griefing. Understand I want anyone that wants to to be able to play, so just hit me up or anyone else playing for the password and you can get it.

Yesterday or 7/27. The server is still going strong and it's only been rolling a day now. That said, we built a ton in the first day. :)

You have to connect from the Terraria game. You can get it for about $10 on Steam. Runs on the most modest of win PCs.

Join The Cheerful Ghost Terraria Game Starting this Thursday!

To celebrate this retro Tuesday, WhiteboySlim and I had an idea. Lets run a Cheerful Ghost Terraria server for two weeks and kick it all off this Thursday @ 8pm PST. If you are a Terraria newb or long time player, feel free to join us. Ill be in game explaining the ropes to new people as I build my house and start a mine. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the comments.

The Main Details:

When: Cheerful Ghost Terraria starting this July 26th @ 8PM PST

Where: The game will be accessible @ terraria.cheerfulghost.com port 7777.

How long? This server will last two weeks. This is to see how it went and discussion will be had to continue it or reset for a new world

Oh and there will be a password. More on that later...

The Rules:

1. Be cool. I will be running a mod to disable most griefing and banning folk that are not cool.
2. Checking out peoples houses is fine, just leave it as you found it.
3. When you build your house, attempt to build around people and don't box them in. Build close to your friends, just allow them to either build upward or out.
4. Have fun!

I hope people find time to connect to the server and check things out and build with people on the site. This is the first time we have done a community game and I hope it goes well!

As you can probably guess since it was partly my idea, I will be there Thursday night. :) If we get a couple people on I say we try spawning a boss and see if we can take it down.

I am so in, but as I til Jon last night, I am east coast so getting there on opening night will be a stretch.

I had no idea there were bosses in this game. It seems pretty deep for such a small game.

Bosses don't destroy structures as far as I know. Plus I'm pretty sure we can control where they spawn so we can spawn it somewhere away from the starting zone. So far the only boss I fought was the Eye of Cthulhu.

From all I read last night you can control the spawn of bosses unless you burrow to the wall of flesh. That guy is just underground somewhere.

The wall of flesh has a spawn condition too. You have to throw a guide voodoo doll in lava to make it spawn. The only boss I have spawned by accident is also the only boss I've fought, lol. The Eye of Cthulhu spawns when you reach a certain amount of health, but once you defeat him he won't spawn again until you use an item to spawn him.

My computer is pretty old (approaching 5 years if it hasn't already hit that mark) and it runs it just fine. It's not a very resource intensive game.

Now that Diablo 3 has been out a little while I wanted to post a few thoughts I have about the game after beating it a few times. First off, its great and if you can get it I recommend you do as it did not disappoint. That said I did figure I would be playing it much longer than I did. I can't pen why I thought Diablo 3 would be all the game I needed for the rest of the year, but I did. I figured the replayability would be so high that I wouldn't put it down for 6 months. Thing is, that was me for a few weeks but after that my play time waned and I don't play it all too often anymore. I imagine ill poke around in it and occasionally put in more time but it started and stopped like any other game ive played. I may have played it less than Borderlands come to think of it.

Recently Blizzards President took to the forums to address a few issues, some I had some I didn't. Interesting read for sure:

All that to say, Diablo 3 was a great game, I beat it and I am a bit disappointed because I thought I would play it more than I did. In the end, playing it again a little bit harder than before wasn't as much fun as I thought it would be.

I never got disappointed with it until I stopped playing it for the Steam sale. Now, I can't really imagine wanting to play it. Diablo 2 was definitely a pick-up and put-down game, though. I imagine I'll be back to Sanctuary many times until D4 is released.

I think I was starting to get weary of it when I started my second character class. Good game, I just Imagine I'll play Skyrim more. Maybe even Terraria.

I agree, once I started working through Hell mode (and I upgraded the craftsmen until I couldn't as there is yet another resource for them that is blocking until Inferno mode -- which happened before I got to the skeleton king... same as happened in nightmare mode), it just started to feel like work and not "fun" so I played less. Now it just doesn't seem fun enough to pick back up.

Maybe I'll feel differently after a few patches, or a few months have gone by.

The lag monster (okay, I probably would have died even without the lag) killed a level 37 two days ago. I mourned for about 3 hours and then rolled a new Demon Hunter.

Just started Skyrim. An hour in and I am enjoying the game(the shot above is from my current location in the game looking at a sweet mountain). Taking it slow. Following people, listening to them and getting all the story I can. After the initial Dragon attack I had to pick one of the guys to follow. Didn't know who was who so I picked the guy with long hair. After a dungeon crawl we emerged from the dungeon and I followed him to Riverwood village where we met his sister. He is part of the resistance to the Empire. I like the sound of joining them but I really don't know much about the war save Ulrich is their leader and they want Nordic freedom in Skyrim.

I talked to the vendor in Riverwood and apparently he had an Inn break in so I am on the hunt to recover his dragon claw. Along the way I killed some bandits, nabbed some new armor and gold. I met up with a lone hunter in the wilderlands and wanted to see how killing an innocent would work. Apparently nothing happened. Well thats not true as his dog didn't like me killing his master and attacked me too. I had to dispatch the dog as well and after the whole ordeal felt horrible.

I killed an innocent hunter. I am the monster of Skyrim. Oh well at least I didn't behead people like the EMPIRE! BLAST YOU EMPIRE I WILL SEE YOU.... Oh wait, I have no idea whats going on in this conflict. A bit more searching for answers then ill pick a side.

Hopefully. Oh and double hopefully I don't murder more innocent hunters and their dogs. Ug.

I advise you to really hear both sides of the story before choosing to side with Ulfric or not. I will tell you that, while I certainly see both sides of the argument, I have never been able to make myself side with Ulfric. The first time you get to Windhelm, go to the darker corners of the town and talk to people about Ulfric and the Stormcloaks.

I fully expect to have a long, in-depth conversation about Empire vs. Stormcloaks on here when you get far enough :)

They kinda are if you're argonian. Even more if you're Khajit. Most nords (who are the most plentiful race in Skyrim) hate you if you're any kind of elf, especially dark elf.

I did an Imperial first (got called "milk drinker" a lot... not sure why that's an insult). Second time I rolled argonian, and I love it. I'm thinking of being a kitty next.

My game play habits have shifted from PC to console back to PC again for my entire life. When I was a wee lad my parents bought us a Commodore 64 then a few Christmases later, our first Nintendo. 4-5 years ago after primarally playing PC games for years I picked up a Wii. A year or so later I nabbed a PS3 and I was primarally a console player up till recently. Fast forward to now and I am shifting back to the PC starting with the release of Lord of the Rings Online Free to Play and then Diablo 3 and now the amazing Steam sale.

Ive shifted to now 90% of my gaming happens the PC and I only go to the consoles occasionally or for BluRay or Netflix. Recently I pre-ordered Borderlands 2 on PS3 and it may well be one of the last full games I play on it. I did that because it seemed most of my friends would own it on that system, but it was a hard choice to make. The PC was so tempting! I like my consoles, but it seems that the PC offers me more right now.

Games load much faster. Games are cheaper(Steam sale, what what?). You can mod them. The graphics are much better. FPS's on the PC are more fun. I can easily chat with my friends while we play or skype. And its just plain fun. Yeah, switching back to PC is a ton of fun. Which is why I play games in the first place.

That all said, I might switch back to consoles when they can up the ante a bit but for now I am happy to switch back to the PC. I know we live in a post PC world and I own an iPhone 4S but the PC is awesome and I love that it is my primary game platform now.

Same here. I didn't get in on the last generation until late in the cycle. I was pretty much PC only until grabbing a PS1 for the Final Fantasy games, then PC only until I played a friend's copy of Guitar Hero. From then on I had a lot of catching up to do on the PS2 and GameCube and then that spilled into current gen. But now that we are toward the end of this console cycle, I find that my very modest PC plays all the games I care about, often better, and almost always prettier. It is quite amazing that medium quality Skyrim is slightly better than console Skyrim (short of some pop-in).

This will probably be where I stay until the first or second price drop of the next console generation. The only caveat is exclusives. As long as Nintendo is in the hardware market, the next Mario or Zelda isnt going to show up on PC.

From what I have seen of the next gen consoles, the Wii U seems interesting but nothing gnaws at me to get it. Perhaps the PS4 or XBox 3 would but we still don't know what those will be. If they both have BluRay it will be a tough choice but I still prefer to not pay for an Online service.

Awesome! The first computer I had was a Commodore 128D (backwards compatible with the C64). I played around with that until we got out first PC in '95. Back in those days, I was predominately a handheld gamer (I had a Gameboy and a Sega GameGear) and then a PC Gamer (Doom II, Wolfenstein, and Command & Conquer). I think it wasn't until I went to college that I became more of a console gamer, which I am now. Lately, I've gone back and forth between handheld, PC, and gaming with Pokemon X, Terraria, and Batman: Arkham City Origins (to name the most recent games I've played).
