Tinystarderp2 Starbound

Released on December 4, 2013 by Chucklefish

Developed by Chucklefish

In Starbound, you take on the role of a character who’s just fled from their home planet, only to crash-land on another. From there you’ll embark on a quest to survive, discover, explore and fight your way across an infinite universe.

You’ll encounter procedurally generated creatures and weapons, discover populated villages and abandoned temples. Explore planets dotted with dungeons, eyeball trees and treasure. Make use of over a hundred materials and over one thousand in-game objects to build a sprawling modern metropolis or a sleepy secluded cabin in the woods, and do all of it alone or with friends!

A big update to Starbound just dropped 1.3 which adds a bunch of stuff around space exploration and building space stations http://playstarbound.com/spacefarer-update/

Now you can build your own space station! There is also space exploration and finding stations in space to trade with, explore and fight. To do all this that added customizable mechs that work in space and on planet...

Lots of new fun stuff to do and explore. I'm excited about playing around with this new update!

Starbound recently came out of early access with version 1.0. However, I got in to it before that. I actually played through it a few times. I clocked over 200 hours before 1.0 was released. I've been playing it a lot since then, I even got my son a copy. As I was playing recently, I was thinking about the things I remember about the various development stages that I played through. I thought I'd touch up on them here.

I remember I started out playing a character of the Avian race. I liked using the Avian’s Tomahawk or Axe, but now I don’t like those weapons. When you click the left mouse button to attack, it raises your character’s hand(s) to attack. Letting go... Read All

"You’ve fled your home, only to find yourself lost in space with a damaged ship. Your only option is to beam down to the planet below and gather the resources you need to repair your ship and set off to explore the vast, infinite universe…"

Starbound launched today and to help celebrate I installed 1.0 and gave it a shot. I'll have a more formal review later but my initial impression is mixed. That said, I am curious what others think of 1.0 and how you are playing it?

What did you think of the opening story mode?

Chucklefish is finally releasing Starbound 1.0 coming July 22nd. After making a huge early access splash, Chucklefish hit a few snags with some pretty large delays and as such garnered some community backlash. I am happy to see the game finally hit this milestone and as such am really eager to play it in it's final form.

"In case you missed it, Starbound is coming out of Early Access on 22 July, 2016.

After ~5 years, the game we set out to make finally exists, and to say that it all feels a bit surreal would be a massive understatement!

While Starbound will be finished in two weeks, this isn’t the end. We will continue to update and support Starbound for as long as we... Read All

Lots of us boarded the Chucklefish hype train and pre-ordered Starbound the second we could. As we played the game we all realized it was a solid foundation but didn't live up to what we were expecting. As the updates happened some of us played it and some of us lost interest. I think we all want the game to be fantastic and recently there is some great news on the game moving to a 1.0 release.

I'll clip out some relevant text, but I urge you to read the entire linked post below.

"So here we are, only a few updates left before 1.0 and I wanted to give you a run down on what to expect.

There are 3 updates planned before 1.0. The combat update, the story update and a... Read All

Starbound just dropped a new trailer showing off all the things coming in the Winter update. They claim the Winter update will come in January, but as with all things it could slip some.

What do you think of the video? Will you head back to Starbound after this update? This video seems to feature much more of the content we were promised when we originally backed the game last year.

I've been fairly mixed on Starbound so far but one thing I am not mixed on is how amazing Curtis Schweitzer score is!

From mollygos:

"As Finn noted yesterday on Twitter, we’re trying to push these updates to the unstable branch next week and, depending on how that goes, pushing them to the... Read All

Check out the news on Starbound's official site: http://playstarbound.com/

From the "One Year Later" news (http://playstarbound.com/one-year-later/): "We’ve been super hard at work on a very large update that changes and expands upon the progression system and it’s nearly ready for unstable."

I'm looking forward to the large update! I'm hoping it's the big 1.0 version we've been waiting for. I did some testing of the "nightly builds," but it's been a while since I've played. While I was fully aware that the nightly builds weren't always stable and had their own bugs in them, after a while I decided to wait longer. There's only so many times you can go through character... Read All

I've been waiting for some updated news about Starbound. I've remained out of the loop for a while, so after seeing Travis mention something about an update, I thought it was time to look into it. One of the developers posted some great thoughts about the game's development, which give great insight into Starbound and Early Access gaming (http://playstarbound.com/some-thoughts-on-early-access-release-dates-the-big-1-0/).

I also found out that the developers were going to be releasing "nightly builds." This gives us access to what they have done each day. In order to access them you have to opt-in to get them (http://playstarbound.com/nightly-builds-are-live/). It is... Read All

There are a few more things about Starbound that I've thought about and want to share. Although I love the music, I often wish there was more of a variety of it, as I often hear the same music repeatedly, which gets old after a while. So that is one of my wishes for the final release.

I have begun to explore other sectors. I'm finding that the need for certain ores in other sectors is what's pushing me forward. I am currently in orbit above my first Tentacle planet in sector X, which is threat level 5. The other planets nearby are double that level. I believe this is the last sector which is some what disappointing (I don't want to finish with this game yet), there... Read All

My impression of Starbound has greatly improved since I saw the trailer for the first time. Honestly, I now think I love it. At first I thought it looked ugly, but it's own artistic style has grown on me and I like it. The visuals remind me of Secret of Mana, a Squaresoft game for the SNES. In that game, when your power level is back to full, you hear some kind of notification and you can see that you are ready to attack at full power. It seems to me that I hear something similar in Starbound. Sometimes either while fighting or finishing off a monster, I hear a "bling" kind of sound. I haven't figured out what this means yet. Any ideas?

My current star system is "Alpha... Read All

You might not know it, but if you chose an Avian at character creation, you're creating an atheist. Your playable Avian doesn't believe in their god, Kluex. This info can be read in the logs. So, I'm finally playing Starbound and I thought I'd share my initial impressions, which actually comes less from game play and more from watching someone else play it.

If you've seen any of my recent comments, you may know that I've been watching Paul Soares Jr.'s YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/paulsoaresjr). I watched his Minecraft "Survive and Thrive" series before playing Minecraft around Thanksgiving of last year. I recently finished watching his "Paul Plays... Read All

Like many of you, I excitedly boarded the Starbound hype train. After a few weeks of reading the nearly daily updates, watching the update videos and talking to friends, I was hooked. I wasn’t alone as many people on Cheerful Ghost and all over the internet were really excited to see play Starbound. In April of 2013 the Starbound beta hit and over the next few months the Starbound fans funded the game at 4 million dollars! We sailed through the three pre-order bonuses of the new race, collectable fossils and starter pets. My excitement level was crazy. Clearly this game would be the answer to my prayer for an awesome open world building game in space that took the... Read All

"As we said before, the current progression is entirely temporary, existing to provide temporary gameplay whilst we work on the engine. Today I want to share more with you about the games new structure and the beginning of the game.

First of all we’re removing the different universe sectors. In the final game there will be only three sectors. The sector the majority of the game takes place in, a pvp sector and a creative sector without dangers.

Instead of progressing through the game sector by sector, you’ll advance by upgrading your tech to allow you to visit planets that were otherwise inaccessible due to hazards. An example being a planet with no breathable air.... Read All

Like many Starbound players, I have been curious how the game will evolve during the beta. Recently Tiy posted a pretty large update post describing what we can all expect. I found a few bits noteworthy, such as how progression will be handled:

"As it stands, almost the entirety of the progression in Starbound is temporary. Built quickly to enable some basic gameplay during beta.

The final game will be structured differently.

The current 10 tiers of gameplay will all play out on the same Starmap, with each tier introducing hazards that can only be overcome by progressing through the previous tier and completing a mission at the end of each tier.

To access a mission at the... Read All
