In Starbound, you take on the role of a character who’s just fled from their home planet, only to crash-land on another. From there you’ll embark on a quest to survive, discover, explore and fight your way across an infinite universe.

You’ll encounter procedurally generated creatures and weapons, discover populated villages and abandoned temples. Explore planets dotted with dungeons, eyeball trees and treasure. Make use of over a hundred materials and over one thousand in-game objects to build a sprawling modern metropolis or a sleepy secluded cabin in the woods, and do all of it alone or with friends!

The Starbound Beta drops in 2 days and like many of you, I am very excited. A few Let's Players have received early beta access and have posted up several videos and I want to break down a few things that will help you out through the first missions of Starbound.

First thing you will do is get your first quest and collect your starting items from your ship chest. You start with a sword, flashlight, 10 torches, matter manipulator and some seeds. After you land you will want to chop down some trees and get some cobblestone with the matter manipulator. The matter manipulator is a cool tool that basically can chop down trees & dig up stuff except it does is very slowly... Read All

I have been eagerly anticipating the Starbound Beta for quite some time and it looks like we got some word on when the beta will drop from Tiy.

"Starbound beta release is looking to be around dec 4th. Assuming arrangements go through with steam."

I created a Cheerful Ghost event for this, so join it if you want to add it to your calendar and chat about it!

Didn't think i'd be writing about the Starbound beta this year but it looks like it will be coming very soon. Chucklefish recently posted about how the beta will roll out over the upcoming months.

stage 1: progenitor

"Stage 1 will be move at a breakneck speed. This will be the buggiest and busiest stage of the beta. A bunch of unfinished features will be disabled whilst we finish them up. Updates will come thick and fast, sometimes as often as multiple updates a day.

If you choose to take part during stage 1 you should expect bugs, lots of balance changes, you shouldn’t get too attached to your character or universe as we may make changes that require you to start from... Read All

This looks so fun. I loved Terraria's grappling hooks, but they didn't have these Spider Man physics.

It's updates like this that make me wonder just how much we don't even know about Starbound yet.

Just watched a few minutes of the Starbound game demonstration at i49 and I had to drop it on the site. Molly and Bart show off the game starting with Character Creation, Multiplayer and questing.

The game looks VERY pretty and polished for a pre-beta. The art and music work well together to build the world. The basic exploration elements look great. You seem to start with a nice assortment of items in the matter manipulator, flashlight, basic weapons & torches.

Check it out and sound off with your thoughts in the comments.

Very pretty biome showcase video. Can't wait for this to drop.

Each night one of the Starbound developers writes the daily game development progress and I religiously read each one. A few recently caught my eye and I thought they were fun enough to share.

The first bit of awesome shown in the above video is of a new feature, Asteroid mining. It seems all you need to do is go high enough to find them and have a suit capable of sustaining you in the low oxygen environment.

"Yup, if you go high enough you’ll now climb out of the planet’s atmosphere and find asteroids to explore.

The terrain here is COMPLETELY temporary. So don’t worry about that. We simply spawned a random jumble of dirt to test this out. It’s going to get far more... Read All

"Bartwe worked hard last weekend to get the system in place, and I’ve been taking full advantage, testing various potential instruments with dozens of ABC files.

At present there’s almost 20 instruments already in the game, with more to come as time goes on.

All that remains really as far as the instruments are concerned is some pretty graphics to make them look the part, proper animations with the hands, a user interface so players can easily select their song of choice, and getting synchronized performances across multiple players.
"

This feature of the game really interests me. As a musician it interests me, but I am also curious in playing music with my friends with... Read All

Recently the Starbound roadmap was updated to cover the updated progress of the project. Many of the high level sections are at 90% complete but some still need more love. If you are interested in checking it out, check it out.

Been following all the posted development activity for Starbound over the last few weeks and wanted to bubble some up to your attention. One feature I thought was interesting is that they are adding in game 3D printing. Its an interesting feature and ill have them describe it for you.

"We’re also working on the 3D printing interface, which is very similar to the crafting interface but you’re also able to “scan in” items to reverse engineer them. Almost any object you find in the world can be scanned/reverse engineered to allow you to print it using ‘pixels’. However, anything you make with a 3D printer will be marked as “printed” and will have a much lower value. If... Read All
