Summer Games Done Quick 2016 Wrap Up & Favorite Runs

While it was happening there weren't many moments where I didn't have Summer Games Done Quick playing in the background on the TV. Watching people speedrun games is a nice thing to do when you are caring for an infant and since it was going all day long, if I had to be up at 3am I could turn it on. There were so many incredible runs but I wanted to showcase a couple I liked the most.

If an Attack on a Compound Occurs That No One Sees...

So, I'm just now finishing Wolfenstein: The New Order, and was quite pleased with the bulk of it, but I have a couple questions. Firstly, am I supposed to beat the game on Uber to get a more complete ending? If not, are we to presume that B.J. dies, or does the sound of the helicopter after the credits imply that he was rescued? Secondly, and more importantly, I totally thought the whole thing was going to be some dream or hallucination, due to the events that happened shortly after the Nazis "shut down" the asylum at the beginning of the game. I don't think they would do the "it was all a dream" thing. It would cheapen it significantly. I think the ending was left ambiguous because it works well as an end to BJ's story, or as a great segue into a sequel.

What do you make of the lighting change in the asylum when BJ comes out of his dormant state? I especially thought it interesting that there were several references to the shrapnel still lodged in his brain. There were other comments to, by Fergus, that I thought sounded like he was implying that the situation near the end of the game was ideal for BJ due to him being a Nazi killing machine, compounded with the fact that almost the entire world was now Nazi's (I'll have to go back and listen more closely to what he says).

Playing through again through Wyatt's timeline is proving interesting. With my perks leveled up as they are, Uber doesn't seem as crazy as I thought it would be, but I'm assuming will be pretty brutal against Mecha-Deathshead. I really like Wyatt's story, so far, even if the "choice" interaction seems a little more contrived here. Wyatt feels guilty for the people that died under his command, I get that, but he also seems like a thoughtful, more empathic soul than, say, Fergus, and the animosity toward BJ for the choice that he made doesn't feel quite as believable. I really like the implication of "J" and what he brings to the story. One of the better game+ experiences I can remember.

One thing that really sucked, was going through the submarine. It just made me wish MachineGames would make a Bioshock game.

I saved Fergus in my first playthough(I think most people did) and want to play it again saving Wyatt. Interesting they let you choose so you could come back and replay it.

Sounds like you liked the Wyatt choice better as far as the story went?

Again, I've been drinking (see your latest PAX post), but I think I do like Wyatt better. Fergus is a bit of a downer. Wyatt has a small breakdown when you get to that "choice" FMV, but otherwise, he's a really positive person, despite the hell that's around him. I think, in terms of how I would rather handle a situation (like Nazi's taking over the world), I'd rather have a positive view of the hell I'm in, as opposed to being bitter. Not that Fergus is a bitter character through and through, but he leans on it hard sometimes. Which might just come from age. They've both seen, and been through, some shit. They both have a reason to hate the world and the people they hold responsible for leading them to it. Wyatt just seems to handle it with a bit more grace. The impact to the story, though quantifiably small, is enough to make the experience uniquely different.

Are All Games Worth $60? Uhm, No, Not Really.

Boogie2998 is one of the YouTube personalities I enjoy watching. Not only do I enjoy his Francis character rage against the latest video game news, but I enjoy listening to his commentary too. In this latest vlog he talks a bit about AAA pricing and dat $60 price tag. I agree with him that not every AAA game is $60 and he notes that will most likely or is already changing.

Wolfenstein: The New Order is a Masterpiece of Mayhem

Wolfenstein: The New Order puts you back in the shoes of B.J. Blaskowicz, Nazi-killer extraordinaire, for another adventure. The game was developed by a new team at Bethesda, MachineGames, and uses the id Tech 5 engine that debuted in RAGE. * I am at the part where I got out of the sub. About how far am I though the game percentage wise?

* How long did the game take you to beat? So far, I think I am at 10 hours.

* What difficulty do you play on? I am playing it on the... middle one? The one that is harder than normal.

* I guess I would ask-- which sub? Are you referring to the thing you pilot yourself as a sub or are you talking about the sub you stow away on? If the first, you're about halfway through chapter 10, if the second, you've just started chapter 11. There are 16 chapters.

* It took me about 10 hours to complete. For my first playthrough I didn't focus on exploration. I plan on playing through a second time and scouring the place.

* The same, I think. I changed it a few times while playing so I'm not sure where I ended up.

* I did not beat it. It's surprisingly hard!

OK so I am still at chapter 10 then. 10 hours into the game myself. I am exploring everything and taking my time. I am also stealthing wherever I can, which means levels take longer to complete than otherwise. Well, that and dying. I am at a higher difficulty so I die more than I have in other games. I dig it though, it's a fun challenge.

Actually, do you remember the secret area in the final boss stage of Quake 2 that had a "credits" room, where pictures of the dev team plastered the walls? I'd love something like that with a retrospective of Wolfenstein enemies. You start off with the Wolf 3D sprites and work your way up to The New Order enemies.

One major complaint I have on my second playthrough-- for a game that has so many hidden items, it really punishes people who are trying to find everything. If you miss something and go to a different section of the map, it's often impossible to backtrack without restarting the whole level. Oh I slid under that obstacle and there was an enigma code 5 feet before? Well, I guess I'm screwed. That's getting a little annoying.

@Travis - Confession: I got both. I saw some picture of an Asian child shrugging her shoulders, and it moved me. Trying out Watch Dogs as I'm typing this, and I'm really liking it. It's less like Assassin's Creed and more like Red Dead Redemption, but in Chicago, with hackers. I haven't read the reviews, but the gameplay feels like it's on par with what has been shown in pre-release videos. Granted, I'm only an hour or so into it, but I've covered a lot of the city (underground, and water systems). It's quite the playground.

I tend to favor sci-fi/tech over fantasy, even though the margin is thin. The significant things about Watch Dogs are the nuances that separate it from the other sandbox titles. The size of the world isn't that big of a deal, though it is absolutely beautiful. The way you can observe and affect the environment, and people in it, however, is creepily fun. You can hack cameras in the city to map out your plan of attack, or use the cameras themselves as extensions of you. Everything is connected, as they say, so you can jump from camera to camera, then hack a remote detonator on a guard, the explosion will draw the attention of another guard who has a camera on his phone, hack into that, then he carries you over to his post, where on the wall you can see the security panel for building access, hack that, and keep going. Or you can just take the guards out John McClane style.

There are problems with it, evident even in what little I've played. Everyone in the city has an identity. Everyone. Ubisoft did a pretty good job at making them diverse, but you can see repeating patterns here and there. Dialog could have been a little more diverse, too. In one motorcycle ride across town, I can't tell you how many times I heard the exact phrase "We have roads for a reason!" A "Hey, asshole, keep it on the asphalt!" or "Unless your mowing it, stay off the lawn!" would have been nice. I did swing around a corner once, taking out several newspaper racks and a light pole, and some lady shouted a very timely "What...the...fuck!" That was entertaining :).

Finally got to play a bit of Wolfenstien. Just a bit passed the sex scene. Really, really liking it. This is the new standard for shooters this generation (at least for consoles). Everything feels and looks and sounds so good.

Play Wolfenstein 3D in Wolfenstein: The New Order

There are some mild spoilers in the video, so if you mind those kinds of things, beware.

I've played a little of The New Order so far and enjoying it quite a bit. I was pleased to find this awesome nod to Wolfenstein's roots. It looks like the same level that was an easter egg in RAGE, but I'm not 100% sure. I guess that would be the easy thing to do.

Keep The Wolfenstein Hype Train Alive By Watching This

You may have noticed that most shooters only enable you to play them in one way. Run and gun. Looks like the new Wolfenstein game has considered this and is designed to allow you choice in how you approach it. Not only can you run and gun, causing mad amounts of carnage and also paint the world with the blood of your Nazi foes. It seems Machine Games is also enabling people to play with a stealth mode style.

If you are the more "hang back and slit throats while taking some sniper shots at the Nazis" type of person, they seem to have you covered. All told I enjoy the "run and gun carnage" but I also really loved the stealth aspect of the recent BioShock Infinite DLC... Read All

Well. My power supply on my PC isn't great BUT there is a new Nvidia card that supports it. It's the low power high spec option Nvidia releases every so often. Let me rustle up the info here...

Ok so it's the GTX 750. It doesn't require anything more than to plug it in.

I will tell you that some of my specs are just under the minimum requirements for Assassins Creed 3 and 4, and both of them run perfectly on almost maxed out settings. So it may run perfectly, or may sputter along, depending on how much of a margin they allowed.

So you can probably get a this-gen or last-gen (whatever the hell we're calling the PS3 and 360 generation now) experience with your setup.

My setup works pretty well for 90% of what I throw at it BUT Diablo III is lagging a bit more than i'd prefer.

Really? Katie's laptop is using the Intel 3000 series integrated video and she doesn't have any issues with it. She does have Low FX turned on though, which I've actually considered myself at times for different reasons-- when you have a Wizard or a Monk with Epiphany spamming the screen with all kinds of colorful effects, it's easy to lose the action.

Yeah, I run D3 @ 1920x1200 and don't skimp too much on the VFX. Most of the time, it's fine but more oft that not on Reaper, things chug.

It's a pretty hefty machine beyond the video card though. I'd LIKE to run it at my full res of 2560x1440 on the GTX 750 but that might be wishful thinking :D

Nowhere To Run From The Dystopian Nazi Future From Hell

I'm not gonna lie... I pre-ordered the new Wolfenstein game because this game looks totally sick. That said, the few trailers that have dropped contain some really violent and shocking imagery. Don't get me wrong, I am no slouch to violent stuff. I loved the film Inglorious Basterds so much it sit's on my movie shelf. That said, it seems Wolfenstein: The New Order even ratchets things up quite a bit. To it's credit, to be sure.

I played Wolfenstein: The New Order at PAX prime this last summer and from what I played it was a really polished shooter. Can't wait to get my hands on the game and take down them Nazi's one more time...

Wolfenstein: The New Order will include DOOM beta

Wolfenstein: The New Order dropped a new trailer today. It is coming out May 20, which is great news and I'm sure I'll enjoy it thoroughly.

More importantly, though, IT COMES WITH ACCESS TO A DOOM BETA.

It is never referred to as DOOM 4, so it's possible this is a reboot, at least in name, in the same way the previous Wolfenstein was.

Guys and gals, I am stoked. Doom is one of my favorite franchises, and the fact that they're close enough to be talking about betas is exciting news on its own-- the fact that we can get our hands on it soon is icing on the cake.

Wolfenstein: The New Order QuakeCon Interview

Jens Matthies of Machinegames gave a pretty interesting interview at QuakeCon about the upcoming Wolfenstein: The New Order. The video showcases some of the stuff we can expect from the game. Some of the video footage shows off BJ scaling a wall to the top of a building one hand on a rope while the other is spent killin' Nazis. As BJ scales the building a plane epically crashes into it and since nothing seems to stop him, he just keeps climbing.

The video also shows off a cool new stealth takedown mechanic new to Wolfenstein. Wolfenstein: The New Order will allow both a run and gun and stealth style of gameplay.

E3 Developer Interview

Wolfenstein The New Order is the only upcoming triple A game I am excited about. The shooting looks great, the story is right up "camp alley(I love that shit)" and it just looks like a hell of a lot of fun.

This developer interview is pretty awesome and shows off some of the design goals of the new Wolf game. It is a action and adventure FPS and I am very excited to see how they pull that off. The Wolfenstein 2009 reboot was great and this one looks to be even better.
