FTL: Faster Than Light

Released on September 14, 2012

Developed by Subset Games

This "spaceship simulation roguelike-like" allows you to take your ship and crew on an adventure through a randomly generated galaxy filled with glory and bitter defeat.

I've finally played FTL, probably less than 2 hours was spent. The tutorial was definitely helpful and easy. I didn't do the virus or spider missions, I knew from Cheerful Ghost that definitely shouldn't do the spider one. I made it to the third sector, but that is where I ran out of fuel. I obviously need to keep an eye on that and buy some when I can. I found out (via a Google Search) that I could attempt to jump, but choose to wait and use a distress signal. Unfortunately, an enemy ship (a Mantis one, I think) found me and started firing at me. They had great weapons, including a laser that penetrated my shields. Unfortunately, they took out my weapons and caused... Read All

The FTL team released more information about the new expansion that is pretty interesting. It seems the game is getting several new subsystems like the Clone Bay, Hacking, Mind Control & Backup Battery. I find the Clone Bay an neat addition to the game as when you select it, it replaces the Med Bay. Apparently with the Clone Bay your crew is regenerated, thereby allowing you care less about death.

Overall the expansion is starting to look really awesome and I can't wait to check it out. Still no release date set and as soon as they have one, you will be the first to know.

In this episode of the Cheerful Ghost Roundtable we talk about the amazing indie rogue-like FTL! During this season we will be doing entire episodes about certain video games we love and we decided to kick this off with style!

"The Lanius are scavengers – metallic lifeforms that rely on the absorption of minerals to sustain themselves. Their society ebbs and flows in hibernation cycles; they may lie dormant for many years, even while hurtling through space. As soon as they become aware of significant metal deposits they reawaken. Usually this occurs in the dying stages of a galactic civilization or in the wake of intergalactic war.

Reports of reawakened Lanius have appeared in many of the war-torn and abandoned sectors of Federation Space. Their arrival has created panic as they indiscriminately seek our sources of metal – although more diplomatic individuals have suggested that they can be... Read All

I am very excited to let you know that FTL is getting a new Advanced Edition that will drop early 2014. I heard about it today and like many of you am really excited to get my hands on the new content.

"We’ve been working hard over the summer and are excited to finally officially announce a free expansion, FTL: Advanced Edition! FTL: AE is a huge content addition that includes new weapons, drones, augments, systems, enemies, and more. Here are some details on just a few of the additions visible in the trailer:

  • Mind Control System: Temporarily turn enemies into allies. Force a boarder to repair the damage they just did, or have the enemy pilot sabotage their own helm.

@WhiteboySlim and I finished our FTL pairing session the other night and I wanted to share it with everyone that was curious how it would turn out. It was a good build concept but in the end I think we failed because we just didn't hit the boss hard enough. We could take enough punishment, we just didn't do much in the way of damage.

Looking forward to trying this build if I can get more powerful drones. That said, for my next game I am going to try the boarding mechanic. Seems like a hell of a lot of fun.

Make sure you watch part one first:

If you are looking to add some video game magic to your lego collection you may get your wish. Looks like the FTL guys put a Kestrel design up on the Lego site and it is listed as "Supporters Achieved." I can only imagine that means that the design is moving along and we may very well see an official Lego Kestrel ship for purchase.

Would you pick a lego Kestrel if it came out?

@WhiteboySlim and I took part in a FTL pairing session last night and recorded it over Google Hangout. We decided to roll with a new strategy to us both in building our ship around drones using the Engi Cruiser. It is a very lucky run for this build and we had to cut it short to head to bed.

Stay tuned for the thrilling part 2 conclusion of our FTL session coming soon!

Watch the session and let us know if you have any suggestions for our build and strat for the remaining sectors and boss fight!

Its no secret that I love FTL. I am not sure I have been as proud of completing a game as when CapnCurry and I beat it in a FTL pairing session. One aspect of FTL I really love is Ben Prunty's score. Its a really great album to put on while I am surfing the web or reading. Recently Ben posted about his thoughts on a few of tracks in the FTL score. He talks about "Space Cruise" (the song featured above) and a few other iconic tracks from the score.

On "Space Cruise"

"This is a very simple three-chord progression that was the very first thing I wrote for FTL. I was trying to prove to the guys at Subset Games that I could make something fun and breezy, but also not overly... Read All

I've played something like a hundred FTL games. As of yesterday, I had won exactly once. Tonight, I had an FTL pairing session with the Cheerful Ghost himself, and we won. And not by a small margin, either - we picked up eight crew members along the way and lost none; our hull dipped into the red exactly once; our missile stock never got into the single digits.

Sure, we caught some lucky breaks, but nothing dramatically "wow". Our weapons bank was, by the end of the game, a small bomb, a burst laster I, a burst laser II, and a pike beam. Solid, but not world-shattering. Likewise our drones; we finished with a beam drone I and a defense drone I. Our final loadout was,... Read All
