In this episode we cover a variety of video game news. Will Steam Link ever get a release on iOS and Apple TV after Apple denied the app? How awesome does Rage 2 look? How long will Nintendo support the 3DS? Will we see an N64 Classic this year? Will No Man's Sky's Next update be everything we hope? What is the meaning of life? We dive into these questions and more in this episode of Cheerful Ghost Radio!

Bethesda is busy. To think, ten years ago all they really had was the Elder Scrolls series. This year's conference showed off a ton of new games and updates.

Rage 2
This one looks like a hoot. I loved Rage but the open-world part didn't exactly land. The gunplay was near perfect but it left some to be desired. This time, id is partnering with Avalanche (of Just Cause fame) to bring something special and the trailer and gameplay look like exactly what I was hoping for.

Elder Scrolls Legends and Elder Scrolls Online updates
These games seem to be doing really well for Bethesda. They spent some time talking about some new updates. I'm just gonna be straight up honest here, I went to the fridge and the bathroom for these because it's not my bag really.

Doom Eternal
We don't have a ton of info on this but we're getting another Doom game soon. Twice as many monster types, Hell on Earth. It sounds great and I can't wait to hear more.

Quake Champions
This one is still in early access but it'll be free to play when it releases. You can buy it now (or at launch) to unlock all the playable characters. If you download it this week you can keep playing it Free to Play throughout early access.

Prey Updates
I was a bit surprised to see updates to this but it has some neat new modes coming. One that's a king of randomized simulation roguelike and one that's multiplayer with five people. One human, four mimics, playing hide and seek. This sounds fun and hilarious and terrifying.

Wolfenstein Young Blood
A new Wolfenstein game is coming soon where you play solo or with a friend as B.J.'s twin daughters in the 80s. This brings the game to a potentially very new setting. I'm looking forward to this. Machine Games thanked us for supporting their mission of killing all Nazis and the "Fuck Nazis" narrative got a lot of applause from the crowd and my living room.

Skyrim on Amazon Echo
This was a joke skit starting Keegan Michael Key from Key and Peele. The game obviously isn't coming to Echo but it was a pretty funny take on how Bethesda wants Skyrim on every electronic device on the planet.

Fallout 76
This is the one we were waiting for. This is an online-only game, to get everyone's main question out of the way. You play as some of the first people to enter the post apocalyptic world in West Virginia, where you're tasked with rebuilding. You can play it solo or with friends, but it's still unclear whether you can play in an instance without other players. You can't lose progression by getting killed and you can easily move bases so I'm hoping any griefing fears will be eliminated with this. I'm less pessimistic than I was, for sure, but there are some ways it could go wrong. I'm really hoping for private servers. There are nuclear warheads you can set off against others and I just don't want that kind of grief. I also saw the caps icon from Fallout Shelter pop up a few times so I'm a little worried we'll have caps microtransactions. Either way I am pretty damn sure I'm getting this day one because it looks super fun. I may not love every aspect for sure, but I'm excited to try it. They're going to have a beta to test things out so that should definitely answer any remaining questions. There's a collectors edition coming with a power armor helmet that I'm assuming will be too small for my big head. It's all brain, I assure you.

Fallout 76 is coming November 14th this year.

Elder Scrolls: Blades
A totally new Elder Scrolls mobile game that will also eventually come to PC, console, and VR. It's first person, playable in landscape and portrait, with seemingly solid controls. This will come out this fall, hopefully after I've gotten a phone upgrade.

Fallout Shelter
Fallout Shelter is coming... now! to the PS4 and Switch.

That's it for everything this year. Todd then went on to tease two new things coming later on (no year mentioned)

Starfield
This is the first new property Bethesda Game Studios (the developer, not the publisher) has started in 24 years. We only got a teaser but it seems to be a sci-fi RPG maybe?

Elder Scrolls VI
Wait, they actually teased a new Elder Scrolls? Yes they did! We got a flyover of the world we'll be playing in and nothing else. But I honestly didn't expect anything. I figured with The Elder Scrolls Online still doing great business they'd stay away from the single player games for at least a couple more years. But there we have it. It's coming!

This was a great presentation and my hype level is high. Time to start throwing money at Bethesda.

Ah, Neo Geo. I never had a home console, but I remember a lot of Neo Geo arcade games fondly. This minified version looks to reclaim that nostalgia, minus the smell of grease and cigarette smoke that usually accompanied playing these games in restaurants and bars.

This one stands out from the others by having a small LCD screen built in, but you can still hook it up to your TV and play with a replica of the Neo Geo home console's controller (sold separately)

The list of games for the Neo Geo Mini just dropped. 40 in total:

  • The King of Fighters ‘95

  • The King of Fighters ‘97

  • The King of Fighters ‘98

  • The King of Fighters 2000

  • The King of Fighters 2002

  • Samurai Shodown II

  • Samurai Shodown IV

  • Samurai Shodown V Special

  • Fatal Fury Special

  • Real Bout Fatal Fury

  • Garou: Mark of the Wolves

  • World Heroes Perfect

  • Kizuna Encounter

  • Art of Fighting

  • The Last Blade 2

  • Ninja Master’s

  • Metal Slug

  • Metal Slug 2

  • Metal Slug X

  • Metal Slug 3

  • Metal Slug 4

  • Metal Slug 5

  • King of the Monsters

  • King of the Monsters 2

  • Sengoku 3

  • Shock Troopers

  • Shock Troopers 2nd Squad

  • Magician Lord

  • Blue’s Journey

  • Robo Army

  • Crossed Swords

  • Mutation Nation

  • 3 Count Bout

  • Blazing Star

  • Last Resort

  • Ghost Pilots

  • Top Player’s Golf

  • Super Sidekicks

  • Football Frenzy

  • Puzzled

This one isn't as high on my list of wants as other mini consoles, but it's still pretty neat.

If you are into hacking old tech or just want to see the NES do things you never knew it could, check this video out. It has a bit of a strange setup. To quote the video description, "The video begins in a strange way and gets stranger, but then, ideally, you understand why."

Yeah the intro is a little long and strange before the payoff, but it's impressive what he gets out of an unmodified NES. I won't spoil the fun for you in case you want to follow along with the joke he presents.

EXPECT SPOILERS IN THE COMMENTS OF THIS POST

Solo: A Star Wars Story is the new Lucasfilm prequel featuring everyone’s favorite Corellian smuggler Han Solo. Solo had a somewhat troubled production when Lucasfilm replaced the original directors Lord and Miller with veteran director Ron Howard. We’re now living in a world where we get a new Star Wars movie per year, is this a good thing or has Lucasfilm succumbed to the darkside?

We'll be back next month with Part 2 of our review after things have had some time to settle in our minds. In part 2, we'll tell you where Solo fits into our Star Wars rankings and give our Ghost Scale rating.

When will Cheerful Ghost Radio finally jump the shark by talking about Star War way too many times? In this episode we’re going to circle back and talk a bit more about Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi. The Last Jedi was recently released on digital and Blu-ray and we wanted to revisit the discussion and talk the special features. The Last Jedi has received some mixed reviews by fans and this extra review isn’t really an attempt to change anyone’s thoughts on the movie, we are just big Star Wars fans and wanted to talk a bit more about the film.

Hi folks,

We have upgraded some of the frameworks we use on the site -- Bootstrap has a new major version that's been stable for a few months, and that required an upgrade to jQuery as well. As we plan out future changes to the site, these new tools make things easier for us and better for you.

Some of the tools from Bootstrap 3.x we were using are gone in 4, so we had to re-work things a bit. Fortunately, the tools that replace it in Bootstrap 4 are better, and it gave us an opportunity to improve those things with some redesigns.

For now, we just tried to make things look like the site pre-upgrade for the most part, but in situations where that wasn't possible we put on a fresh coat of paint. You'll notice some things look different, hopefully for the better! In terms of things you most likely use often, comments will be notably different, and private messages use the same kind of design now. As Jon mentioned in the comments below (can't believe I forgot to mention this!) the games lists you'll find in a few places on the site have a major overhaul and look way better than before.

Please let us know if you run into any bugs or have any other feedback!

Next month's Cheerful Ghost Games Club event is live! Come play Kid Icarus with us!

Punch Out, originally titled Mike Tyson's Punch Out before a bit of ear-biting changed Nintendo's mind, was ported from the arcade in 1987 by Nintendo R&D3. In Punch Out, players take on the role of Little Mac, fighting through three circuits and eventually facing the impossible Mr. Dream.

In season two of Cheerful Ghost Radio we are doing bite-sized NES Classic review episodes. We want to make you all part of these episodes, so if you want to join in the fun, head here and join in the event for next month's NES Classic review, Kid Icarus!

https://cheerfulghost.com/Travis/events/153/cheerful-ghost-games-club-kid-icarus

While we have you here: what kind of games from the NES Classic and SNES Classic would you like to hear us review? Would you prefer the SNES era over the NES era? If you have suggestions, head over to Cheerful Ghost to let us know.

EXPECT MAJOR SPOILERS IN THE COMMENTS!!

Marvel Studios Avengers Infinity War is the latest Marvel Super Hero thing to punch the box office right in the face. If as a kid you wondered if there could ever be a comic book movie with all your favorite heroes this is the answer. Infinity War is the follow up to damn near every MCU film but more sequentially Thor Ragnarok and Black Panther.

This one is coming quickly after the last episode but we wanted to get it out early while it's still fresh in everyone's minds.

Chrono Trigger is a classic RPG originally released in 1995 by Square-Enix back when they were still Squaresoft. It is considered by many as one of the greatest video games of the 16 bit era. Visitors to Cheerful Ghost have probably read Jon’s post about having recently played the game for the first time. This is one of Tim’s favorite games of all time, so the two of them sat down to discuss how they see the game coming at it at very different times in their lives.
