My daughter loves using the Kinect's voice commands and it seems to work well. I've stayed away from it, as pressing buttons just seems simpler to me, but barking out plays will make me have to try it out!
Voice commands (or any kind of control scheme) seems like it usually gets shoehorned into a game when it really doesn't improve or add anything. I could see this working well for an NFL game though, where calling out commands to your players actually makes sense.
I've gone to the Halloween Horror nights for the past two years, and it is SO MUCH FUN! I was actually going to pass on it this year and try one of the other theme parks, but now that they've announced a Silent Hill themed maze I have to check it out. :D

Fun. That said if it looks like that picture... IT would be pretty creepy.
There is a haunted house here in Portland, Scream at the Beach, and its OK. The first year I went it was scary and awesome, the ones after that not as much. I want to try a new one this year!

I think my favorite part of the Halloween Horror nights is getting to walk through the back lot area. They even let you walk through the Bates Motel set from Psycho :)
So I’ve been a bit absent from the Cheerful Ghost community for a little while, and it’s largely because I decided to pick up FFXI again. Now that I’m about two weeks into my return to the game I wanted to post some thoughts on how the game has changed since I quit in 2009.
Leveling:
Leveling in FFXI use to be a long process. After soloing yourself to about level 10, you needed a full group (six people) in a balanced party of 1 tank, 1 healer, 1 support, and 3 damage dealers and a good camp to farm higher level monsters (higher levels gave more XP). If you had a good party you could expect to gain a couple levels per night of solid leveling. Holy crap has that changed!... Read All

Holy crap has that changed! Leveling is insanely fast now compared to the last time I played. First of all, I soloed two jobs to 15 without breaking a sweat. One of my jobs, I took from 20 to 30 in two hours with one XP party in Gusgen Mines (which, I might add, use to be a BAD place to try and xp). The difference is there are now Field Guides / Ground Tomes scattered around the world that offer you little auto-repeating quests that grant you bonus xp and gil (money) for every X amount of mobs you kill. XP party’s now exploit these quests for insane XP by forming an alliance and just slaughtering everything in a zone. It doesn’t matter that you only get 20 xp per mob when every 6 kills nets you a bonus 1k. There’s no party dynamic in leveling anymore, you just throw as many people at the mobs as you can and if you have curing abilities you help keep everyone healthy.
This was probably the most jarring change for me. Part of the reason I picked the game up was because I missed playing in a party, skillchaining and magic bursting with other players. That said, the new leveling system I think is a benefit to the game. Because of how strict the old party set up use to be, certain jobs had trouble finding groups to level with because of a general overabundance of damage dealers and a lack of healers and tanks. That’s not an issue anymore. Plus even in 2009 people had generally given up on skillchains / magic bursts in favor of just spamming abilities.
Community:
The community in FFXI was always its strongest asset. Because the game forces you to work in a group early in the game it is very easy to find a linkshell (guild) or another group of players to join up with. Outside the game, back in 2009 there was no official FFXI forums, so the community built their own sites/forums to help each other and collect/share data and information on the game. Although there are official forums now, it looks like people are still mostly active on the fan sites.
The player base itself has shrunk considerably, but that’s to be expected for a game that’s so old. Back in 2009 at any given time there use to be around 3k-4k on the Cerberus server, I checked the population the other day it was around 1.2k. However, Square Enix has announced a new expansion for FFXI, so it’s expected that we’ll see an influx of new and returning players. Plus they’re adding 2 new jobs, so there will be a lot more low level people for me to join up with (hopefully) soon.
Economy:
This has always been FFXI’s biggest weakness, and unfortunately it still is. Making money, especially for low level characters, is still difficult. Although it looks like the wild inflation that wrecked the economy back when I was previously playing the game has been largely fixed, new problems have popped up that are probably related to the decrease in the player base. Low level gear is almost non-existent on the auction house and I’ve struggled to keep my character in gear appropriate for my level. Either the items are too expensive or they’re just not there. I’ve actually bought several pieces of gear from NPC merchants, which use to be unheard of because the players could craft better, cheaper armor and sell them on the auction house. However due to the speed that you level in the game and the fact that you level on easier mobs, having maxed gear is much, much, MUCH less important than it use to be.
Also, some items that are vital to completing quests without high level help (Sneak oils and Invisible powders that let you avoid aggroing mobs) are ridiculously expensive now. I’ve been talking with higher level players and they have told me that making money is a lot easier later in the game, but that doesn’t really help me yet (or other new players).
Another hurdle to making money I’ve noticed is that due to the smaller player base (and therefore lower demand) items take longer to sell on the auction house. On the other hand, I’ve noticed that competition for farming mobs is almost non-existent. Monsters that I use to never see wandering around because they were farmed for items I now see in an abundance.
Overall impressions and some side notes:
Overall, I’ve actually been having a lot of fun rampaging through Vana’diel again. The game is so much easier now. Level caps have been removed from a lot of content, making it possible to solo a lot of missions / quests that you otherwise couldn’t before. Leveling is ridiculously easy now, possibly even easier than other MMO’s like WoW. While I’ve certainly hit a few snags along the way, none of them have been that bad. Having said that, a lot of my ease is because I have experience playing the game previously. While the game has made some serious strides towards making the game more welcoming to new players, especially the addition of a new low level quest line that provided some basic gear and some significant starting money, I still think a total newbie would have some problems if they don’t have at least one more experienced friend also playing the game with them.
Sounds like they really have spent time cleaning up the games steep difficulty. I wonder if their answer to WoW's quick level ramp was a quicker one? Oh well, plenty of room for both game experiences!
What class/race are you?

I'm a male Hume (human) from the city of Bastok. My highest job right now is Warrior, but I have yet to unlock most of the advanced jobs. I was a Samurai last time I played, and I kind of miss it, so I might start leveling that when I can unlock it. I was also considering Paladin, but we'll see. One of the things I like about FFXI over other MMO's is that I can level every job on one character if I want to.
Thats a cool thing to be able to do. Swhat I dug about Fallout and Oblivion, you can do whatever you want you don't decide classes, you just sort of put time into those abilities.
Dungeon Siege was similar.

The leveling in FFXI is a little different. It's not that you're every job all at once and you just pick and choose your skills like in Fallout, each class (called "jobs" in FFXI) has its own separate level. For example, at the moment when I'm a warrior I'm level 32, once I switch my job to Monk I'm level 15. You only gain XP for whatever job you currently are. You also get to pick a subjob, which grants you stat bonuses and gives you (mostly) all the job abilities/spells of your subjob up to half your current jobs level. So when I'm a 32 Warrior I can set monk as my subjob and get bonuses to my HP, Str, etc. and I have all the monk abilities up to monk 15 (it would be 16, but I haven't leveled monk that high :) )
A few quick Steam Workshop mods to get you started in Skyrim
I'm assuming some of you are playing Skyrim for the first time now, since it was half-off for the Steam Summer Sale. (How over budget are you all, by the way?)
While TES Nexus is still the best place to get mods, Steam Workshop makes it so easy to automatically download them and install them.
If you're in the market for a new house, there are plenty to choose from. My personal favorite is a Dwemer Airship called the Asteria. This player house is beautifully done, very detailed, and has plenty of storage space. My only qualm is the lack of usable bookshelves, but everything else makes up for it. ... If you're interested in sprucing up the place, the Towns and Villages Enhanced series will bring new life into towns across Skyrim. Riften is in especially dire need of a makeover, so I'll provide that link here, but search for Towns and Villages Enhanced to find them all. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=80844987
One big problem PC players have is with the default menu. With SkyUI, that is changed. The menu feels far more like Oblivion, if you're familiar with that. Lots of options for sorting as well. This one requires a little extra hacking to get going, but nothing terribly complicated. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=8122&searchtext=skyui
There are tons more. Probably in the thousands. This certainly isn't meant to be comprehensive. There are many best-of lists for mods around, if you're interested in reading more. If there's anything you are interested in, just search for it and check the reviews. The Steam comment system is built in, so you can see what other people think about the mods before making your decision.
As an almost purely console gamer, the thought of mods is completely foreign to me. Are they allowable changes to the game? I love Skyrim, but have been kinda jealous of all the mods I've seen for the PC version.
Basically whatever people can think of they do. My only desire is they dot ruin any main or side story quests and are purely additive. So far, they seem to be in that realm or at least the ones I've seen.
Oh good. I mean the game is a pretty large sandbox if they put too many rails on it it wouldn't be as cool. Good it's as opened up as it is. Can't wait to fusrodah a Rabbit!

Jon, just FYI, there's no real Karma system in Skyrim. You have a record of your highest bounties in all the different holds, but no fame/infamy like in Oblivion. People will remember your deeds though.

You can be clearly evil or clearly good, but there's a conflict that you pick a side on that isn't 100% clear. I won't spoil it, but I will tell you that I've gotten into days-long arguments on reddit about which one is the "right" one. :)
Ok yeah wow apparently killing a chicken is a massive crime. I had to go to Whiterun, talk to a guard, pay a fine and then the villagers stopped hating me.
Killing a hunter? Fine? A chicken? YOU FIEND!

Recently picked up a few games from this years steam sale. The Bethesda pack, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2 and Terraria. I started Terraria because it was a smaller download than Skyrim or Left for Dead and haven't stopping playing it! Its only $5 during the summer sale and I heartily recommend you get it.
I started out having no idea what I was doing and watched a tutorial video saying I should build a house to survive the night. I did that and survived. Then I built my house underground. I haven't built a house for the NPCs because right now I dont care about that, that said at some point I imagine I will. Died a few times, apparently you can't fall absurdly high from your sky castle. Found sand, clay and a bunch of other sort of rare-ish materials. Still trying to figure out what else I can build.
Such a rad game for $5 that said I need to pace myself or bye bye time and subsequently my life.
Valve recently dropped the source film maker on folks and I have been trolling teh intarnet swarm-fest for interesting videos created with it. The above video isn't Source Film Maker creation, but its an awesome mashup of Team Fortress 2 and The Dictator.
That said here are a couple videos I found interesting or amusing:
I just pre-ordered Borderlands 2 for the PS3 at Gamestop with all extra goodies. Radtastic.
This past week was San Diego Comic Con and in typical fashion 2k was around to demo Borderlands 2.
A few morsels:
"It was really the Commando that did it for me, though the Assassin's pretty fantastic as well (more on him momentarily). But the Commando, with his wonderfully helpful turrets and outlandishly explosive upgrades, really won me over."
Go on....
"Having only messed with Roland a bit in the first game, I'll just say that while his turret stuff was neat, Axton (the Commando) is a whole other deal entirely. We were shown characters at levels 25 and 35, so we got to go pretty... Read All

"Having only messed with Roland a bit in the first game, I'll just say that while his turret stuff was neat, Axton (the Commando) is a whole other deal entirely. We were shown characters at levels 25 and 35, so we got to go pretty deep into one of the individual skill trees for each character. For the Commando, it's all about how you build out your turrets. You'll of course start out with minor upgrades like ammo counts and cool down periods, but as you start going further in, you'll be able to do all sorts of wacky stuff. You can add grenade launchers, rocket blasters, and even stack a second turret on top of your main one, with all upgrades included. There's even an option to make your turret stick to any surface, including walls and ceilings. When you're trying to avoid getting swarmed by rabid creatures, this can come in handy."
Awesome. All the classes in Borderlands 2 seem solid to me. Interested in the Ninja, Commando and I believe I will start as the Gunzerker for my first character.

Epic has been a primarally console based developer for the last few years and in the case of Gears, XBox only. Its cool to hear them make a choice about the PC as a first class citizen. I wonder how many other developers will push PC ahead of consoles now that the consoles lag so far behind in terms of graphics?
What happened to this games ? I cant find it on steam and I was thinking last night what would be a nice game to buy, so I came to Cheerful Ghost and found this game called Fort Nite. This games isnt showing up on steam though, do you know if its sold an another website or something ?
