Donkey Kong is an arcade platformer created by Shigeru Miyamoto when he was tasked with converting the arcade game Radar Scope, a game that did poorly, into something that was more fun. In Donkey Kong the main character Jumpman, who would later be known as Mario, needs to climb a series of construction themed levels on his way up to rescue his girlfriend Pauline. Donkey Kong started out on the Arcade and has seen ports on the Game & Watch, NES, Atari 2600 and a ton of other systems.

In season two of Cheerful Ghost Radio we are doing bite-sized NES Classic review episodes. We want to make you all part of these episodes, so head over to the events section and join in the event for next month's NES Classic review, Punch Out!

While we have you here: what kind of games from the NES Classic and SNES Classic would you like to hear us review? Would you prefer the SNES era over the NES era? If you have suggestions, let us know in the comments.

Travis gives this an astounding "Must Play" on the Ghost Scale
This achieves something special, and it would be a shame to miss it.

Borderlands 2 is a first person shooter RPG that was released by Gearbox Software in 2012. It launched to nearly universal acclaim and won a bunch of awards including the Cheerful Ghost game of the year award for 2012! Borderands 2 got a junk ton of DLC and was one of the first games with a season pass that got even more DLC after that season pass DLC came out. Borderlands 2 dropped on PC, PS3 the XBox 360 and was later brought to Mac, Linux, PS4, XBox One, Vita and the NVidia Shield.

We wanted to head back to this game and talk about it because we think it deserves a second look and a bit more discussion.

Spoiler alert: Perhaps it's no surprise, we love this game and unanimously give it a Must Play!

Netflix surprised everyone with the trailer for The Cloverfield Paradox during the Super Bowl, and released it that night! We were excited to see the next Cloverfield installment, and equally excited to talk about it.

Does Paradox live up to previous Cloverfield movies? Do we find out where the monster came from in the original Cloverfield? Did someone spill Slusho on the particle accelerator causing a dystopian reality where the Slusho Corporation controls the Earth? Find out in this episode of Cheerful Ghost Radio!

Hey everyone, we’d like to share an awesome new feature on Cheerful Ghost. You may have heard us using the Ghost Scale in our reviews on Cheerful Ghost Radio over the past couple of months, and now you can use the Ghost Scale on your reviews here!

When you’re creating or editing a post, just check “This is a game review” to show options for the Ghost Scale. You can give your game review one of four ratings that will show on the post:

  • Skip it :
Whether due to bugs or other issues, people may have a hard time finding fun in this game.

  • Meh… :
It’s not amazing, it’s not bad. This game is ok but you may want to choose another title.

  • Rad :
This is a fun game, with very few bugs or gameplay issues, and is well worth your time.

  • Must Play! :
This game achieves something special, and it would be a shame to miss it.

I'm giving this post a rating so you can see what it looks like.

We’ve spent a few months baking this from the initial concept to launch and we’re excited to bring game reviews to Cheerful Ghost. As with everything we’re open to small tweaks along the way so please let us know you feedback and feel free to head back to past posts and add your Ghost Scale review to them!

Black Panther’s claws are tearing it up the box office making this recording setting movie a main event in this review episode of Cheerful Ghost Radio!

T'Challa, the King of Wakanda, rises to the throne in the isolated, technologically advanced African nation, but his claim is challenged by a vengeful outsider who was a childhood victim of T'Challa's father's mistake.

Directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa

Excitebike is a Motocross racing game developed by Nintendo as part of the original NES launch lineup. In Excitebike you can choose to race Solo or against other computer players and you can qualify for the Excitebike championships by coming in at first or third place time. In Excitebike there is also a design mode, allowing you to build and race your own tracks.

In season two of Cheerful Ghost Radio we are doing bite-sized NES Classic review episodes. We want to make you all part of these episodes, so comment below if you have ideas for more of these, and head on over to the Cheerful Ghost Events section to join in on the discussion for our next NES Classic review, Donkey Kong!

Ice Climber was released Jan 30th 1985 by Nintendo R&D1. Nintendo R&D1 made other games such as Donkey Kong, Dr. Mario, Excitebike, Mario Bros., Metroid, Kid Icarus and Tetris. In Ice Climber the characters Popo and Nana head up 32 different ice mountains to get an eggplant from a huge thieving bird vulture thing. In season two of Cheerful Ghost Radio we are starting out doing NES Classic reviews and being things with Ice Climber. We are thinking these reviews can be a more bite-sized episode format and are interested in what you think and if you have any ideas for future episodes!

Nintendo announced their DIY cardboard addon recently, and Dami Lee from the Verge dug into how it all works. The video is a great primer on all the tech involved. Very simply put, it's an IR camera and some stickers for most applications.

Seeing how this works makes me want to buy some, but the responsible adult in me knows I'd barely touch it after I was done, and my plastic Rock Band/Guitar Hero controllers would have some company in the closet. Anyone with curious kids, however, may consider this as a way to kickstart other creative and fun DIY projects.

As we begin season 2 of Cheerful Ghost Radio we pause to reflect on the 6th anniversary of Cheerful Ghost by talking about some of our favorite memories. Since the new year in gaming is here we talk about some of the most exciting games coming out this year.

Cheerful Ghost Games Club is back with Excitebike!

You may remember this semi-regular CG event where we pick a game and invite everyone to come play it with us and discuss what we think. This time, we're changing things up a bit. We will do one game a month (or maybe more!) and tying the events into a Cheerful Ghost Radio series about classic games.

We'll review the games in an episode following the event, and include opinions and commentary from people who joined and chatted with us about it.

This month's game is Excitebike! Excitebike is an NES racing game that has been a fan favorite since its launch with the NES. In addition to the main tracks, Excitebike lets you build your own tracks and save them back to the cart. It has spawned a few sequels and references in other Nintendo titles over the years. Join us as we talk about the first racing game on the NES!

You can join the event and the conversation here: https://cheerfulghost.com/Travis/events/149/cheerful-ghost-games-club-excitebike
