Today is the release of Starship Rubicon and I couldnāt be happier. When I talked to Wick about publishing the game I didnāt expect that it would evolve to what it is today. Releasing a game is new to us both and we are both excited about what comes next. Getting the game in the hands of gamers and giving it the widest exposure possible is our goal and it all starts with you. If you havenāt already, I urge you to pick up the game play it and let us know what you think. If you like it, share it with your friends.
We are happy to be selling Starship Rubicon on our website, itch.io and Desura. We will be working with other game stores to sell the game and if there are any you love, let us know! If you buy the game on www.starshiprubicon.com one benefit of that is that when we are Greenlit, you will get a Steam Key.
That said, we are still going with our Steam Greenlight campaign, so if you havenāt already head over and give us an upvote!
For everyone that is not already familiar with the game, Starship Rubicon is a space shoot-em-up that modernizes the physics and mechanics of Asteroids combined with the ship modification and roguelike elements of FTL.
In Starship Rubicon, Earth has been casually destroyed by a mysterious race of space-faring invertebrates. You are a fighter pilot whose cryopod has been collected by a possibly-insane AI, who has placed you in the unenviable position of being humanityās savior. Shanghaied and alone, you must gather the remaining human survivors and traverse the surprising biodiversity of deep space to find a new home.
Key Features
Quick Gameplay - Pilot your ship in fast-paced shoot-em-up, featuring a unique approach to arcade physics and controls. Customize Your Ship - Upgrade your ship with a Tetris-styled hangar bay as you find weapons and items on your quest.
Randomized Universe - Make your way through a diverse galaxy as you encounter interesting new lifeforms. Each play session generates a new path of enemies, allies, and items.
Casual Roguelike - When your ship blows up, thatās the end of the line for that game. However, if you collect enough crystal shards by the end of a sector you can save your ship to re-launch it on another level.
A Fleet Of Ships To Play - Do you prefer fast ships for run and gun? Do you like something that takes a punch but isnāt as agile? Start the game with 3 different ships and spend shards to unlock more ships with unique abilities!
Mod-friendly - Since ships and weapons are exposed in simple external .lua scripts, modding and creating your own content only requires a text editor!
I just wanted to finally mention that due to some technical issues, the Linux build of Starship Rubicon will come a bit later than we wanted. We plan on releasing it and it will be as good as the version on PC and Mac it just needs a little more time in the oven.

I played the "final beta" again today and I was surprised that I made it passed one level. I learned a few things the last time I played, but that's probably because I sadly haven't spent much time playing the game. One of the things I learned was to stop firing so that the shields can come back on. I also think using the left SHIFT key feels natural and am glad that the controls feel right. I seem to be better with the third ship. It's big and has more armor.
Congratulations, again, on the release of the game. I hope it's a success!

The Zukov is also a ship I really like. That said, lately I've really enjoyed using The Warbird.

Well, I've completed the Sol system. My current game is suspended and saved, an option I enjoy. I've still learned a lot about the game. Now, I make sure I collect all the little blue dots before I go to the next battle area. I'm using the first ship a lot more as it seems better balanced and has great shields. I've also been able to repair quite a few times and add on upgrades in the hanger.

Starbound just dropped a new trailer showing off all the things coming in the Winter update. They claim the Winter update will come in January, but as with all things it could slip some.
What do you think of the video? Will you head back to Starbound after this update? This video seems to feature much more of the content we were promised when we originally backed the game last year.
I've been fairly mixed on Starbound so far but one thing I am not mixed on is how amazing Curtis Schweitzer score is!

Last night, I watched a video about the Coffee Quest by Paul Soares Jr. (if you haven't noticed, I frequently check up on the video's he's uploaded to YouTube). I was thinking of playing Starbound today (I've done the nightly builds), but I didn't get around to it. Instead, I played Hyrule Warriors. However, I am looking forward to how Starbound has changed since I last played the nightly build (months ago) and how the stable version will change. I know you like the score, Jon, but I'm frankly tired of it. I want new music! Still, I've been keeping up-to-date with the game's progress by checking the game's website here and there.
The score is incredible. I had forgotten just *how* incredible until watching the video.
But wow, they've made a ton of improvements since the last time I played. I look forward to getting back into it, but I may wait until the final releases instead of jumping in now.

That said, when the Linux port does ship it will be a high quality experience, something all Linux gamers deserve. I consider Linux to be a very important platform and as such want it to be as good as the PC and Mac ports and when it ships next year, it will be. When it does ship, expect to hear about it because it will be a pretty big deal.

Awesome! As I said in my latest private message, I played the game for a few minutes recently. I played the latest beta build. It has changed since the previous time I played it, which was about 2 betas ago (not the previous one, but the one before it). Sadly, I didn't play it in a timely manner to participate in the survey. I'm looking forward to getting my Steam key and I'm hoping the game is a big success!

The Angry Video Game is a legend in gaming but the other day I realized he might not be known by everyone. I've known about The Nerd for quite some time and watched a handful of videos but recently decided to start and watch them all. It's been a fun ride(if you can handle an infinity of poop jokes). They are a bit dated now but they hold up considering the reviews focus on classic retro games and consoles.
Do you want to head back to the past? To see someone play shitty games that suck? Might want to checkout The Angry Video Game Nerd.

I'm just not that big of a fan of his. At first it was an interesting gimmick, but over time the act got old for me. But he's one of the original game reviewers on YouTube, so he does get props from me for that.

I'll admit, his swearing rants are a bit samey. In fact very samey. There are some really fun ways to swear, I just wish he explored more of them. That said, if your a fan of scat swearing in a samey way AVGN 4 THE WIN!
Absolutely. I've been watching him for years. At this point I tend to just not give a shit at all when he starts going into his "I'd rather" rants, because it isn't as funny anymore, but the funniest part has always been his reactions to the games themselves, not the "shitload of fuck" rants.

I played this game around the time it was released, not the Special Edition though. I have SimCity 4 Deluxe, which I started playing again a month ago. I posted about it in the forums. The sad thing is that I went through the tutorials as I had previously done and then I lost interest in continuing to play it.

I agree. Added this to my account so if I want to come back and play it I can, but yeah, when will I get to it?
I snagged this, who knows if I'll ever actually play it, but I have it. To anyone who has a 16/9 or 16/10 monitor (who doesn't these days) here's a resolution fix from reddit:
If you are using a 16:9 or 16:10 monitor, then the game will initially appear slightly distorted for being in the wrong aspect ratio. Fix:
Browse to your Origin games install directory. By default I believe this is C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\ though not sure as I changed mine.
Browse to \SimCity 2000 SE\Game\Game\DOSBox
Open dosbox.conf in a basic text editor like Notepad.
Find the line fullresolution=original. It's near the top in the first section. Change this to fullresolution=desktop
Save the file and run the game. Enjoy non-squidged SimCity!

I almost can't believe how quickly it downloaded and installed. I'm not sure when I will play it though.
Thanks for the resolution fix, Travis. That solution looks very familiar (as in similar to another Sims or SimCity game).

Shovel Knight is on his way to dispense shovel justice to every platform, now adding Sony's current platforms. This trailer is mostly going to be stuff you've already seen if you care at all about Shovel Knight, but at the end there's a very short clip of a Kratos boss fight. This means I'm probably going to be buying the game all over again.

Bible Buffet is a board game turned digital that features different stages of buffet food. Not only do you have the overmap board mode but the game also features Bible quizzes and a Zelda like adventure mode. Is this game a hidden classic or is it guilty of being terrible? I could imagine playing this with some friends while under the influence of some recreational beverages. But it would be fun because you're enjoying everyone's frustration.
I like this guy's style, definitely checking some others.
For it's intended purpose, being a functional, enjoyable game, the verdict is terrible. Mostly because of the companion question book. If the questions were inside the game, I think this could be an actually interesting game to try out, if only to test my knowledge, but I think I'd rather just play a board game.

During the Game Awards, which is apparently a thing, Nintendo released some new footage from the upcoming Zelda game for the Wii U. We get a glimpse of how big this version of Hyrule will be as well as some improved horse riding mechanics.
Mr. Miyamoto also casually mentions that the next Star Fox will be released sometime before the new Zelda. Cool!
What do you think of the new Zelda footage? Do you look forward to a large, more open world Zelda?

Good news indeed. With that, I am in no way going to get hyped or excited about this. The reason is because I was part of the mad hype train by being a passenger as it slammed into a wall. Starbound might be my biggest gaming dissapointment of all time BUT if this update and subsequent updates are golden that could change.
I don't mean to harsh on anyone's good times, but I can only listen and belive a company so many times before I need to emplore the cynicism Ray.
And with that "real soon" in Chucklefish time is that 6 months? /rimshot

I understand. It's kind of hard to believe that a year later, the game still isn't up to version 1.0. I knew that they were having a difficult time with development because the staff were scattered, but I figured development would greatly speed up once they all got together. It doesn't seem like that happened, but I know they have been working on the game for a long time and they frequently post on the site to let us know what they've been doing and are working on. In the news that I posted, they did include a link to what show most of what has been changed with the game, you can check it out if you'd like (http://starbounder.org/Version_History/Nightly).
I enjoyed the game when I first played it, but I reached a point where all it seemed that I was doing was looking for higher-tiered ores to craft higher-tiered gear. I was disappointed a few times at least with the nightly builds. I remember the time they took out the vines that were so abundantly found in caves, which made it much harder to get plant fiber which is an important ingredient in the game. It took me a bit of time to realize that I could get plant fiber by farming, but it was still less abundant. I also remember the game crashing at moments, like loading a saved world or character with a new version of the nightly build. Also, visiting some planets contained nothing but sudden death. Still, I understood that the nightly builds are a work in progress. They've added a new race and some more quests. They've made changes to the game's progression, so I think it *could* be more fun and worth it when they release a new update to the stable build. I may have to pop back into the game's nightly builds to see what's changed since the last time I played (months ago). I do hope that a new stable build is "nearly complete" as they say (also note that on the site "nearly" is written in italics) and not something that we'll have to wait another 6-12 months to see. My impression of this news was that we could definitely see something soon.

This kind of ties in with Terraria. Right now, I can't wait for 1.3 to be released, I'm VERY excited about it and have said so on this site numerous times. Unfortunately, we still haven't been told when that will come. I think I saw a post from October that said it wouldn't come "within the next two months." They also seem to be saying that it will be released when they finish with it, but don't want to put the pressure of a time-table on the developers because they want to make sure everything works well.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that while waiting can be disappointing, it can also be worth it. A better game can be created or updated if developers have enough time to make sure that the game functions very well and is as bug-free as possible. Terraria developers have done a good job at posting some spoilers and updates in the forums, but I think the developers of Starbound have shown much more transparency in regards to what they've been doing. They update their website frequently, which is great because it lets us know that they're still working very hard on additions we expect to see that will (hopefully) make the game much better.

On another note, wow I'm really good at exceeding that 3,000 character comment limit! LOL
While I definitely agree that Starbound released way, way, too early, I still enjoy the game. Then again I intentionally have not played it very much so I don't get burned out on the game before all the core features are implemented. :)
I will probably log in a bit after this next stable update to check out all the new additions though. Now I gotta figure out what I want to name my Novakid character. I had my Glitch character, Whitebot Slim, and my Hylotl Whiteboy Finn...

The unstable (not referring to the nightly build) branch has received the Winter Update. I watched a video about this last night. It is expected that this update will reach the stable branch in the next few weeks (probably before we see Terraria 1.3).
I had my copy of Starbound configured to received the nightly builds branch. Unfortunately, the last time it updated, I got an error about Steam failing to update it due to a "disk read error." I ran a scan disk check, which resulted in no errors for my hard drive. So, I re-installed Starbound. I decided to leave it on the stable build, since it should be receiving the Winter Update soon.
I read something recently about the updates coming post-Winter update. They're planning on releasing things more frequently to the stable branch, in smaller chunks, up to the 1.0 release.

That's cool. I'll share some thoughts with you that I had last night. I'm impatiently waiting for Terraria to update, both mobile and PC versions. Yet when it comes to Starbound, I can definitely wait. It's not that I don't like Starbound, I do really, but "like" is an understatement of how I feel about Terraria. Also, both games have good music and I'm sure I've spent more time playing Terraria than Starbound. However, I grew tired of Starbound's music, whereas I don't feel that way about Terraria. Is that odd or understandable? Maybe it's because both games have their own individual sound, I don't know.
