This site is making me reminisce a lot. Who else remembers staying up til 4AM downloading .WAD files over crappy modem speeds just to play bizarre Doom mods? There were some clunkers, but there were some true masterpieces too. I played a Star Wars total conversion, complete with light sabers, that was incredible.

This was the second PC game I ever played, I think, and I still play it occasionally. Even the keyboard controls have held up, or at least my fingers still remember it. iD may have sunk a bit these days, but they're still one of the almighty developers in my eyes.

Doom was the first video game deathmatch experience I had over a modem. Before that all I played was BBS door games like LORD and Tradewars. The first match didn't last too long as someone called and kicked me off but it was fun for the few minutes it lasted.

If memory serves he destroyed me.

I didn't get into deathmatch until Quake 2. I could still play Quake 2 deathmatch for hours right now and be perfectly happy.

The first shooter deathmatch I was heavy into was Quake. I got my first hub and we played that game at Starcraft/Quake LAN parties.

However, with the addition of some RPG elements (classes, leveling, and loot) this game gets seriously addicting and this is one of the best co-op games out there in my opinion. One of the first games I heard being touted as proving games can be art, and with good reason. The platforming is solid, the time manipulation mechanics work exactly as expected, the puzzles are challenging but satisfying. But the true stars of this game are the story, which is very thin but compelling at the same time, with a hell of a twist-ending, and the artwork. The game looks like nothing else, and has inspired a new sub-genre of artistic platformers. This is easy to knock out in just a few hours, so it's great for a Sunday afternoon with nothing to do.

I wouldn't say I have played it... I played a bit of the original one, but not the re-release with some financial backing. I still need to get to it. It was on one of the big Humble Indie Bundles.

I'm playing this one for my blog and hope to have a lot of meaty stuff to get into. Is there anything you would recommend knowing before I start the game? It seems pretty straightforward, but there are some mechanics that are a little opaque. I hope I will have a lot to write about for this game. (And it has a lower time investment requirement!)

It really is quite straightforward. I can't think of anything I could recommend, as learning the mechanics is, to sound a bit cliche, an organic process.

This is my previous favorite game of all time before this generation changed my mind with Fallout 3 and then Skyrim. I must have played through this at least ten times on PC and Xbox 360. The atmosphere and genre go from sci-fi (obviously) to war, to horror, to driving, to puzzle seamlessly. The Source engine blew me away at the time, and even though it was the first iteration of the engine, it still holds up well graphics-wise today.

Portal 2 is second place for me for Game of the Year 2011.

Portal 2 is second place for me for Game of the Year 2011. The gameplay we all loved from the first game is back, with far more puzzle elements. The humor is more prominent this time around, there are a few iconic characters to carry the narrative, and the addition of co-op (which I was skeptical of at first) is brilliant. The controls for the PS3 version are probably the best first-person controls I've played. I have only played a puzzle or two of co-op, so anybody who has this on PS3 or PC and is interested, feel free to add me. When I'm done with Skyrim (or when it's done with me) I'd love to play some more co-op.

I agree, Portal 2 was really great. My wife wouldn't let me play it without her in the room.

The voice acting overall was. Everyone. But Cave was the best by far! I love the actor in everything I've seen him in, but I may like Cave more than any of the others.

That's a hard question. I was sure of it three hours ago, but now I'm not. I think, in terms of fun intensity, I'd give Skyrim the nod over Terraria. In terms of quantity of fun, it's Terraria. I think.

Whoa! I thought I saw something about Zelda looking like Minecraft, maybe this was it, although that was before I played Minecraft. I have not yet messed with any Minecraft Mods, my son's told me of a few he wants, but I (so far) have refused to mess with them. I looked at one and it just looked too complicated (unzip this .jar and replace files, etc..). Maybe I'll get into it sometime, I don't know. There aren't very many games at all that I've messed with Mods. Is this a Mod or is it a stand-alone clone?

The storyline is that you're a member of the Saints, a gang that has taken over the city of Steelport. Fame has settled in (one gang member has a commercial for Saints Flow, an energy... It's an open world. You have a cell phone that other gang members call you on to advance the plot and send you on missions, but you can usually take your time between missions, exploring the city of Steelport. Steeling cars became on of my hobbies. You have a garage that you can stash your cars in and modify them. My favorite was a police car that I stole and tricked out.

The missions that I went on were really varied, from the typical "raid" where you're entering a building with intention of killing a rival gang leader to jumping on a helicopter and using a rocket launcher to fend off rival gang vehicles as one of your fellow gang members tries to drive away from a heist... there was one mission involving rescuing a fellow gang member from a BDSM club, and another involving your character going through a twisted Japanese-styled reality show where "mascots" (furries) are killed for cash whilst you dodge flame throwing traps.

One touch I really enjoyed was when driving to a mission location, my character and another gang member turned on the car radio, and Sublime's "What I Got" was playing. They both sang along, getting most of the words correct, but missing quite a few too, just as I would when I sang along.

Not a game I'd recommend for anyone easily offended, there's a lot of violence (duh, it's a gang theme), swearing and other mature content.

But after three days of playing, this is definitely an enjoyable game. Even the missions that are hard, and seemingly impossible are enjoyable enough to keep retrying until you finish them (that I've found so far)

I started playing it again last night so I could write up a really good post... ended up playing until 1 am and I'm still not even into the football season! Working on signing free agents and drafting rookies first takes a lot of time(if you want it to)!

Depending on when you played it last, the "game" portion has filled quite a bit. I still play it primarily as a creative outlet though. :) Although I play on a survival server (part of the fun for me is building a "secure" base. Also: Monster traps!) I actually run my own server if you're interested. I use to have a pretty active, although small, player base but then our server took an arrow to the knee (damn you Skyrim!) and now it's usually empty.

Also, if you want something that's a little more "gamey" but still has a creative element to it, you should look into Terraria. You can still build stuff but it focuses more on the adventure/platforming aspect of the game.

I finally played Minecraft around Thanksgiving of last year (only months ago). It is a great and addictive game, but I think my thought that stands out the most is that I HATE Creepers and lava! LOL I think that's one reason...no two reasons...why I got away from it. The part of it I most enjoyed was exploring new areas (caves). I still have a Notepad file of locations I saved of other caverns to explore (locations marked by checking out coordinates in Debug mode). I enchanted my sword and now it's gotten too expensive to repair (about 30 levels). I think Terraria took me away from Minecraft as well. I think I was also disappointed because I was always looking for more diamond, I could never have enough diamond! Still, it is a great game.

As I mentioned above (two years ago!) I use to run a server. I kept it mostly vanilla but one of the few mod's i did run was called "CreeperHeal." Basically, creepers still exploded and damaged surrounding blocks but that damage would automatically repair itself over the course of a few minutes. I liked it because it made Creepers a LOT less annoying but still kept them dangerous.
