EA was just voted the worst company in America by the Consumerist. Way to go EA! You're so bad people actually hate you more than the cable companies and banks.
Kind of wonder if this is because people actually dislike them this much OR because they are kind of going through the ringer right now. Not saying its not deserved, just wondering.

Some games are just timeless. This is still just as fun to play now as it was when I was 4 years old and my parents got our first NES. :D
My favorite memory about this game though happened just this year. My oldest daughter is 3 and a half and I made the decision to pass my Gameboy SP down to her. One of the games she plays is this one (it was re-released on gameboy). She can now successfully complete the first level all by herself and she always gets so excited every time she reaches the end of the stage or any time she successfully squashes a goomba (she even knows they're called goomba's!) It's awesome watching her play!
I got this game as a gift from a friend for Christmas. I'm told this is very similar to the Warcraft 3 mod Defense of the Ancients, but I've never played that so I can't really comment on any similarities.
The game is a mix of RTS and RPG. There are two teams and your objective is to destroy the other teams base. Throughout the map are several flags that teams can occupy that grant their side either stat bonuses, increased gold production, or portals that spawn waves of NPC controlled soldiers.
Each player picks either an assassin character (you control one character, but your abilities are typically more powerful) or a general who can command a group of minions. The characters seem to be pretty well balanced, and there's a lot of variety between each character so they each have their own feel and play style.
Over all, I really enjoy this game. I've played it with my friend several times as well as a few on-line matches with random people and I've had a lot of fun each time. Unfortunately, the community for this game is all but dead. There have been several times I've logged in to see that there were no open matches on-line to join and ended up just playing against the AI. From what I've read on-line, the game had a horrible launch with several game breaking bugs that chased many people away. It really is too bad, because now that the game is working it really is a great game.
I'd say wait 'til this games is on sale for cheap, then convince a friend or two to buy it with you so you'll have someone to play with.
I played through Defense of the Ancients on War 3 and it was pretty fun. Still fun to load it up and play, not sure how many people are playing it these days.
Blizzard DoTA and Valve DoTA should be interesting when they come out.
I was talking about this game the other day with Rett. I'd play it some more, was a fun MOBA game for sure. I did play against bots back then and the AI wasn't terrible to play with. Wonder how the game is now.
This is one of my all time favorite games. So many fun memories of playing this multiplayer with my friends and cousins! The music was great, the graphics and animations were cool, the weapon selection was awesome, and best of all up to 3 people could play all at the same time!
This site is making me reminisce about old SNES and NES games a lot, lol.
Agreed. Mana is one of those games I'll come back and Play every few years because it's so engrossing. It's on the iPhone so I'm thinking of picking it up on it.

I saw it was on iPhone, but I kind of hate the touch screen controls on most games. Plus how do you do the multiplayer on an iPhone?
You could use wifi or bluetooth, but from what I know you can't do multiplayer on Mana for iPhone. Your right about the touch screen for games like Mana, it isn't great.

I finally played Secret of Mana months ago in an emulator. I ended up using cheat codes, but then it all glitched near the end, so I didn't finish it. I spent a lot of time on that game, even though I was cheating.

True story: this game is actually what got my brother-in-law to actually like me. Before we bonded over video games I'm pretty sure he just saw me as some guy who married his sister. :P
The Fable games are amazing, yet really disappointing. I love playing them, I thoroughly enjoy them, there are just so many missteps along the way that make me wonder what they were smoking.
Wondering what mis-steps you mean? Ive heard good things about Fable and always lamented the disclusion on the PS3. Though I do believe they had one on the PC?

I know the first one came out on PC, I think you can get the Fable III on Steam too.
The only complaint I had about the first one is how your character ages as you level up. So by the time you reach the end of the game you're an old man even though no one around you ages. It was a very weird design decision IMO. I usually just equipped gear that covered my face so I couldn't tell I was old looking. :P I should also note that I have the Lost Chapters version of the first Fable, which has a lot of extra content and really helped flesh out the game.
Jon, I can't really name anything specific, for the most part. I don't know how to quantify it. I don't really have any complaints about the first Fable, except that it was unpolished. There was a lot of potential that hadn't been achieved. Fable 3 was kinda messy though. The whole system of decisions that crops up about halfway through the game is bad-- you never know what you're going to need until it gets time to make the call. Further, the core game was basically just Fable 2 with a new plot.
I sunk multiple 80+ hour play through's on the original for the PS one, so when I heard they were re-releasing it on the PSP with added content and multiplayer I was sold. I actually got a PSP specifically to play this game. My room mate at the time also got it and we spent way too many hours playing the co-op missions over and over again trying to get the new gear that only drops from the new missions. The new content is actually really fun and really challenging. I just wish the PSP let you play over the internet so I could play this more often with other people.

I enjoyed Final Fantasy Tactics on the PS. I got the version for the PSP and enjoyed that as well. I don't think I was aware of added content or multiplayer functionality. I think I remember some minor changes such as names of monsters, I can't quite recall.

Yep! They added two new classes: Onion knight and Dark Knight. Onion knight is kinda lame and boring. While the job is level 1-7 it's incredibly weak and it's stats suck. Once it's level 8 though it has the highest stats in the game and can equip all equipment, including some special Onion Knight only gear that's crazy overpowered. Unfortunately, you can't use ANY abilities while in the class, which makes it incredibly boring. :\
Dark Knight though... is awesome and also overpowered, lol. It's like a toned down Orlandu that any character can become. The requirements to unlock it are insane though. You have to have level 8 in all the advanced melee jobs, master Knight and Black Mage, and kill (when they turn into crysals/boxes) 20 enemies. Still, it's worth it to make your generic characters that you may have grown attached to just as (if not more) powerful than the special characters. :)
Speaking of Special characters, there are also two new characters to recruit from other FF games. You can recruit Luso from FF Tactics Advance 2 and Balthier from FFXII. Luso is just a clone of the Main character with an added innate Secret Hunt passive. Balthier is a mix of a thief and mechanic, having all the abilities of both plus much better gear options (guns and knight swords!) and a special ability Barrage, which basically attacks 4 times at half strength.
There are two multiplayer modes that they added. One is a basic vs. mode where you fight another player. The other is a series of co-op missions that are actually very, very challenging and a lot of fun. You really need to bring your crazy overpowered builds into the later missions if you hope to beat them. When this game came out my and my room mate at the time both got PSP's and this game, so we played it quite a bit. :)

Cool. I don't know if I knew about the new additions and I've just forgotten or not. Have you played FF Tactics Advanced? I loved that game and it is why I got a Gameboy SP when it came out. Then I got FFTA2 and loved that as well.

I have FF Tactics advance, but I wasn't a huge fan of it. There were two main reasons I gave up on it. First up was that, while having abilities tied to your equipment wasn't that bad (see FFIX for a game with a similiar mechanic) the fact that nearly ALL the abilities were tied to weapons sucked. It took so long to learn each new ability that it was a serious drag on the pace of the game.
The other thing I wasn't a huge fan of was the Judges/rules system. It was an interesting idea but I think it was poorly executed. Throwing random rules into a match was nice to kind of spice things up at first but by the time you progressed into the game where they were throwing out 3 rules every match it became annoying. Plus some of the rules were pure bullshit, lol. Like when you get the rule "cannot attack monsters" and the enemy team has monsters on their side but the winning condition requires you kill the entire team. It also did not help that around that same time I got Tactics Ogre (also on Gameboy) and it was all around a MUCH better tactics game. Because I never really liked the first one, I never tried FF Tactics 2, but I did hear that it was much better than the first one.

Correction: I never tried FF tactics advance 2. If they made a sequel to the PSone/PSP FF Tactics I would be all over that.

Good points! I haven't played Tactics Ogre, but I've heard it's good. I'm aware there are a few versions of it as well.

Specifically, it was Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis for GBA. Great game if you can find it! Amazon has one new for the low, low price of $99.95 if you're interested. :P That game also had a neat multiplayer aspect that my (at the time) room mate and I absolutely abused to the point of being dirty cheaters, lol. Unlocking advanced jobs at level 1? No problem.
I also played the N64 Ogre game, Ogre Battle 64. It is a very different kind of game, it's kind of more of an RTS than a tactics game, but still really fun.

It's worth noting that Yatsumi Matsuno, one of the main people behind FF Tactics and Tactics Ogre is working on a new game. I posted about it not that long ago: http://cheerfulghost.com/WhiteboySlim/posts/1834

Wow! Isn't it amazing how expensive some of these old games are!? Hehehe. I saw your post about the game.

I actually really like this game, but I can't bring myself to play it a second time. The dialogue is painful to sit through. The actual writing isn't horrible, it's the little emote animations the character do in between everything (and I mean everything) they say. It takes half an hour to talk to an NPC and get your next quest. It's too bad too, because the rest of the game is actually really great.
I actually did not mind this about the game, what I hated was that when you chose all your actions if you had all your characters chose to attack the same guy, if the enemy died after just 2 actions your 3rd characters action would attack at the empty spot from where the defeated enemy just was, instead of automatically attacking the next enemy to the right or left as in most any other RPG, this really REALLY bugged me. But I have played through the game at least 2 or 3 times. The sequel is even twice as big and long as the first. I have yet to play the DS one.

I didn't remember the attacking thing! Wow, yeah that is terrible. Did they fix that in the squeals at all? I haven't tried any of them besides the first game.
No it was still like that in the sequel on GBA. I have no idea about the DS one, I havent played it!

That is so weird they didn't fix that. I can't imagine anyone felt that was a good design decision. It's annoying enough that I'm kinda glad I passed on the sequels. There's too many other good games out there I can spend time on :D

As an FPS game this is pretty good if a bit generic. The missions are mostly fetch-and-retrieve quests or "kill this X times" and the story line is barely there. However, with the addition of some RPG elements (classes, leveling, and loot) this game gets seriously addicting and this is one of the best co-op games out there in my opinion. You can play off-line 2-player split-screen and up to 4 player co-op on-line and this game really shines. I primarily play this with my wife and we're both having a blast. We're both level 51 and we've completed the main story line and two of the expansions (House of Ned and Claptrap Revolution) and are working our way through the other two expansions now.
It's worth noting that my wife is not your stereotypical gamer, and there's only a few video games she really enjoys playing as much as I do. :) The fact that she's hooked on this game lets you know it will appeal to a wide audience.
There's a few things the game could use some improvement on (such as the inventory screen not scaling well on split screen, or a little more variety in quotes/mobs/loot) but over all this is a great game. I would highly recommend this to anyone, especially since I see the GOTY edition, which includes all the expansions, tends to go on sale fairly often so you should be able to pick it up pretty cheap. Convince a friend to pick up the game with you and go have fun killing stuff. :D
You know, I think I should try this again with your mindset. I went in looking for a game, I need to go into it looking for a lego simulator.

Depending on when you played it last, the "game" portion has filled quite a bit. I still play it primarily as a creative outlet though. :) Although I play on a survival server (part of the fun for me is building a "secure" base. Also: Monster traps!) I actually run my own server if you're interested. I use to have a pretty active, although small, player base but then our server took an arrow to the knee (damn you Skyrim!) and now it's usually empty.
Yeah I had heard it was fleshed out a bit. I'll give it another shot sometime.

Also, if you want something that's a little more "gamey" but still has a creative element to it, you should look into Terraria. You can still build stuff but it focuses more on the adventure/platforming aspect of the game.

I finally played Minecraft around Thanksgiving of last year (only months ago). It is a great and addictive game, but I think my thought that stands out the most is that I HATE Creepers and lava! LOL I think that's one reason...no two reasons...why I got away from it. The part of it I most enjoyed was exploring new areas (caves). I still have a Notepad file of locations I saved of other caverns to explore (locations marked by checking out coordinates in Debug mode). I enchanted my sword and now it's gotten too expensive to repair (about 30 levels). I think Terraria took me away from Minecraft as well. I think I was also disappointed because I was always looking for more diamond, I could never have enough diamond! Still, it is a great game.

As I mentioned above (two years ago!) I use to run a server. I kept it mostly vanilla but one of the few mod's i did run was called "CreeperHeal." Basically, creepers still exploded and damaged surrounding blocks but that damage would automatically repair itself over the course of a few minutes. I liked it because it made Creepers a LOT less annoying but still kept them dangerous.

Probably a mix of the two.
Right.
