I actually remember this ad. It was freaky. I switched the channel.
I don't blame you.
I had nightmares now, thanks Dodson. They probably based Five Nights on this concept. LOL
It’s awesome. Check it out.
This is such a rad video.
Fish passage is a big deal in the hydro engineering world. This salmon cannon made big news a while ago when it came out, but it's not the only inventive solution. One of my friends and coworkers, Ryan Greif, designed a decompression chamber for fish called the Decompression Raceway (http://scholarworks.umass.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1492&context=fishpassage_conference) There is a cannon that shoots salmon over dams.

One of my friends on Facebook posted a video showing that she was playing in a colorful world. I never saw anything like it in the game. Thanks to Google, I recently found out more about this level and am sharing it with you here (http://diablo.blizzpro.com/2014/07/22/enter-diablo-3-secret-level/). This secret level is called... Read All Recently, I finished a book called "Ape and Essence" by Aldous Huxley. Belial was mentioned and it took me a few minutes to realize how I recognized the name. That's right, Diablo 3. This made me want to play the game again, but something else unexpected happened that makes me want to play even more and I'm writing this to share with you.

This secret level is called Whimsyshire and requires a bit of work to get to.
I don't believe any of you have mentioned this level in our various discussions about the game. Were you aware of this level? Does this make you want to play the game again? What do you think?
Whimsyshire is fun.
http://cheerfulghost.com/jdodson/posts/346/recently-panickedthumb-and-chowda-helped-me-get-to
I still have the thing you need to spawn it too and head back now and again. Those Unicorns can be pretty brutal on harder levels
Ok, my bad, you older Cheerful Ghosts have discussed it. That post was written "over two years ago." This Cheerful Ghost (me) is just almost a year old. Even though I did back track and read a lot of posts, I obviously missed that one. I think that's because I didn't get into D3 until after I did that. So, this is a bit of a double post, but it's in the forums, instead of the main page. This post could also help generate some new discussion about the game.
I'm sitting here at the PC with the link in a tab and on my Kindle Fire HDX while my son is playing Skyrim on the PS3. =)
No problem, Diablo 3 is great and I had fun heading back into it and doing a run of bounties.
I think this new-to-me level is great for me because it gives me a good reason to get back into the game. I have two Heroes, a Barbarian and a Paladin. I think the first is about level 64 and the other must be around 40. I can't seem to recall how far I got with the Paladin. I did log in today and play a little bit. Since it's been a while, I'm not sure what I was doing last, so I decided to do story mode again with my Paladin so I could collect the necessary ingredients for the staff.
Do you remember how long it took you guys to find the necessary ingredients to make the staff? I know they're rare, but I'm still looking for the first ingredient (the black mushroom).
Playing the game again is reminding me of my indecision. I often find it difficult to decide what to equip. If an item doesn't give me any bonus compared to what I have equipped then that makes my decision easier and I therefore sell the item. I am grateful, though, that I have about 1 million gold, so I've expanded my storage chest and decided to drop a bunch of stuff in it. Perhaps I should be saving items that I find for other character classes, but I end up selling them.
For me, deciding to upgrade it pretty simple. Does the new item contain more positive attributes compared to my current gear, if so equip, if not sell or whatever.
It took Travis and I quite a few hours of grinding, I can't say for certain maybe 6 or something? I'll rope him in to see if his memory is better than mine.
Maybe longer than that. Plus a ton of gold to upgrade it after you make it.
As far as equipping new gear, it does get tricky because you can't just go by the green and red numbers in the late game to end game. Does this throw off my all resist? Does it make my crit chance and crit damage go way off ratio? Does it help the elemental damage my weapon deals?
But yeah, it takes a long time to farm for the staff. Some ingredients more than others. There's one where you have to find a cave that has like a 10% chance of being there, and fight an enemy that has a 10% chance of being there.
Excellent points, thanks! I do look at the various aspects of items to decide whether or not to equip, store, or sell. One thing I found yesterday gave experience for picking up gold. I thought that was an awesome ability, but I didn't equip it (I believe I stored it). I kept quite a few items in my inventory even though I didn't equip or sell them. I got tired of the inventory filling up, so I bought another tab and stored all that stuff.
Oddly enough, I've even begun to think that it would be cool if I could choose not to have a follower. At level 65, I don't feel like I need one. Maybe that's just the loner in me thinking or just selfishly wanting the EXP for myself. LOL
So much for "there is no cow level!" LOL
You can dismiss your follower. But you don't miss out on experience even if you have one.
Interesting, thanks, Travis. I decided to equip that piece of equipment that grants EXP for picking up gold. Honestly, I'm not even sure how to to tell how much EXP I need to level up.
When my Crusader says, "how tastes your fear," I think of America today, especially for Republicans and those who watch Fox News, to which I think, "it must taste pretty sweet."
I just got to Whimsyshire!!!!! While I was looking for the first ingredient, I came upon a Rainbow Goblin. This gave me a portal to Whimsyshire! I believe my friend got there the same way, since she got there by accident. It was fun an cool, although it seemed to only consist of one floor.
And what do you know, my next trip into the Cathedral Level 1, I found a Black Mushroom. =)
Whimsyshire is only one level yeah.
That's disappointing, I was hoping for a boss. Still, some of those unicorns are pretty powerful. I haven't looked, but I imagine there are some cool drops there, too. I'm not sure if it's related, but I picked up another cool piece of equipment that "rains" gold when you get a "massacre." I'm still going to continue to hunt down the other drops I need to make the staff.
When doing nephalem rifts, you can find a very rare whimsyshire area, and there's a unicorn boss at the end. I still haven't seen it.
That's cool!
I've been playing Diablo 3 here and there and they have updated it a ton since Reaper dropped. I finally leveled my Crusader to 70 and started Torment. Wow it's harder than I remember Torment being. Still I can handle it, it's just harder than I remember.
That's awesome, I noticed you were online today when I was. My Barbarian is level 66 now. Today, I got a notification that some of my items were damaged and needed repair. I totally forgot about that! At least the game let me know.
I recently just got my Crusader to level 70. I dig the new Legendary attributes on drops now. Makes for some fun gameplay.
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/profile/jdodson-1332/hero/43985764
Wow, that is awesome, both the link and the level.
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/profile/GregoPeck-1971/hero/47779024
You're making me think I should increase the level of difficulty. I should really, I'm not having any trouble defeating monsters.
You better drops if you do.
I increased the difficulty from Normal to Hard. I died two or three times, but I leveled up twice. I found another interesting item, a Puzzle ring which will "[s]ummon a treasure goblin who picks up normal-quality items for you. After picking up 12–16 items, he drops a rare item with a chance for a legendary." Now that I have raised the difficulty, I'm glad to have a follower. I've also put Health potions back into my inventory (I have about 400 of them, I think).
Ah wow I have wanted that drop, awesome you got it!
Yeah, I need to pay more attention to it and start dropping "normal-quality items" for it to pick up, instead of holding on to them to sell. You obviously know much more about the game than I do. I'm often surprised by the drops that I get because I'm not fully aware of what's available. =)
My Barbarian is now level 70 and I figured out how to tell how much EXP you have. There is a bar above your abilities that shows this.
Wow, I haven't really played since the last big patch, with seasons and all that. They've done some major rebalancing. My Monk on Hard was just plowing through things. I eventually just stood there and let a pack of blues have their way with me, and I was barely taking any damage. Gotta love life regen
I noticed you got the "Batting 500" achievement. I went AFK and when I got back, I noticed you were there. I've seen Jon on a bit lately. Even though I didn't post anything new to Cheerful Ghost, I am glad that I have revitalized the Diablo III conversation. I'm glad that I'm playing again, too. I'm sure you two have spent a lot more hours with the game than I have. Not only am I enjoying this revived conversation, but I'm also liking the fact that I'm still learning about the game.
I'm beginning to think it's about time to increase the level of difficult. I'm currently playing it on "hard" and I'm not really taking much damage now. I think I just reached Paradigm level 11. I also leveled up my Artisan and Jeweler because I had some recipes that required them to have at least level 12. I only did that so that I could remove those recipes from my storage chest to make room for more stuff.
I'm currently in the Dalghur Oasis trying to get the last ingredient available in Act II, Liquid Rainbow. I did recently find another Rainbow Goblin and made it to Whimsydale. During that trip, I learned that if you click on a "Happy Cloud," it will sometimes drop some gold.
> Paradigm level
Paragon :)
LOL Where did I come up with "Paradigm?" Anyway, I think it's a pretty neat system.
Yeah, the game is more challenging than when I stepped away. That said, I was level 64 and didn't have very much epic gear yet. Game seemed harder for me, but maybe I am just out of "Diablo-practice."
So, when I said that I reached the level earlier, I think I really should have said that I made it to Whimsydale. I've been there multiple times now via the same way (Rainbow Goblin portal). So, perhaps I haven't been to Whimsyshire yet. I'm still waiting for the Chiltara to drop the Gibbering Gemstone, the last ingredient I need to create the Herding Staff. This used to be a 100% drop, but it was changed and is now more difficult to obtain. I've fought that creature multiple times and it still hasn't dropped.
I have increased the difficulty twice now, so I just started playing "Master" difficulty today. I'm still not really taking any damage, so it might be about time to increase the difficulty again.
I found a new ring that has an awesome ability of haunting nearby enemies. This is really helpful. I also now have a set equipped, my first and only. If you want to check out the details of these items see my hero profile (http://us.battle.net/d3/en/profile/GregoPeck-1971/hero/47779024).
Another thing I wanted to note...I almost never use my abilities (keys 1-4). I imagine that a different class could get me using those more often. I pretty much use my main attack (left-click on mouse) and my attack that uses Fury (right-click on mouse). My profile says that right-click ability is Ancient Spear, but what I see is a chain that often brings my enemies closer to me. Often, when I use this ability, I think of Scorpion's attack in Mortal Kombat and think, "come here!" LOL I often hate when enemies get away from me and sometimes use this ability to pull them back closer to me.
I just got The Vault spawn and it was a hell of a lot of fun. I collected around 10 million gold from it and 4 legendaries. Looks like it was added after the Reaper launch so unless we were playing heavy after patch 2.1 you might not have gotten this.
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/blog/15157768/patch-210-preview-the-vault-8-13-2014
Interesting! I've seen treasure goblins open those portals and I try to kill them before they jump back in, but I've never seen one stay open after a treasure goblin dies. I've only seen that occur with rainbow goblins, which is how I've made it to Whimsydale. Maybe when I see one open a portal again, I'll try to go through. 10 million gold from one place?! Wow! I think right now I have about 8-9 million. Thanks for sharing the link, now I have another place to try to get to. =)
Oh! We may have discussed this some time ago, but I wanted to ask you all, who your favorite follower is. I'm not sure I have one. I think I have tried them all. I've been using the Templar mostly because I think he's selected by default, but sometimes I think I get sick of him. Maybe I should change my follower from time to time to reduce the monotony of it.
More infomation on Geeds Domain http://www.diablowiki.net/Greed’s_Domain
Just after reading your info here, I saw one of the in-game notices while the game was loading that slain treasure goblins rarely open a portal to the Vault.
Yeah, it's rare. I got lucky
Since then, I've probably seen that message 5 times already. Oh! I finally got the Gibbering Gemstone!!!!
Thanks for joining me, Jon! I didn't realize my game was open, I thought it was "private." Still, I didn't mind the cool surprise of your visit. Next time I play, I'm sure I'll be playing a new character that can wield that Herding Staff.
I just defeated Malthael and OMG that was the hardest boss in the entire game on Torment 1!!!!! I died I don't know how many times and I used nearly all of my skills whenever they were ready. Leap didn't seem to do any good against him so I didn't use that, except for maybe once. Avalanche worked sometimes, but not always. War Cry and Wrath of the Berserker were definitely helpful! I think Ancient Spear was helpful a little bit. That battle did make me glad that I started using my skills. I don't know why I started using them, but the game got more fun once I did. Wow, just wow, that was seriously tough! That fight against Malthael makes all the other bosses look pathetic!! Really, I don't think any of them really ever gave me any problems even without using skills 1-4. Finished the game with my Barbarian yet again maybe the second or third time, but this time at level 70, Paragon 61.
Nice! Malthael gave everyone a challenge. It took me a few times, but I wasn't fighting him on Torment mode, that must be really hard. I'll have to try that fight sometime
I think I remember him being more of a challenge than any other boss no matter what difficulty the game is on.
I did reset some of my Paragon levels. I threw all the points I could into Critical Hit Chance, Strength, and I don't know what else. I had spent some of those points for Gold Chance when I had the item equipped that gave me experience for finding gold, but I later removed it for a better item, which meant I didn't need those bonus stat points anymore.
I'm glad the Herding Staff works just by having it in your inventory. I thought I had to create a Wizard to use it, but no. Apparently the staff isn't upgradable anymore after a certain patch. I kept trying and was dong what seemed to be the right thing to get it upgrade, but I read that a patch removed those upgrades.
In response to your "favorite follower" question, almost always the Enchantress. If I'm using a Wizard, Witch Doctor, or Demon Hunter I'll go for the Templar to tank for me. But I almost always do the melee classes.
Are you guys doing seasonal?
Nope.
That's cool, Travis, thanks for answering! Once I started using my skills, the Templar was helpful because he could get a group of nearby enemies closer to us and stunned, then I'd use Avalanche on the group.
I don't really know about "Seasons," so I haven't tried that out.
lol, I can't say it was because of the mid-term elections, but I did actually play GTA online last night with a friend. :D
Which version of Sim City are you playing? 2000 is my favorite SimCity. :)
Yeah, I need to play GTAV again. I don't know why I haven't, I'm really sorry. Part of me is afraid that if I play, you won't be on or playing anymore. I haven't played in almost a year! The PS4 edition is tempting me to get a PS4, but this awesome PC of mine is telling me to wait for the PC version. If only I could see some comparison of the two (or three counting the PS3) versions.
SimCity 4 Deluxe. I was actually going to post a comment here, "well that didn't last long." I played through the tutorials and was done with it. I have books to read and here I am sitting on Facebook. Shame on me.
I remember playing 2000 many years ago, (before the year 2000 when I had already graduated high school or was still there, since I graduated in '98). I was up quite a while playing that one. I think I have a copy of it some where around. This (along with The Sims) is one of those games that I most definitely use cheat codes, trying to balance a budge just sucks. Hahahaha.
Oh and all that said, I still want to show off the GTAO character I created. I think he does look like me. I need to get a screen shot. I'm really pleased with him.
We should play GTAO one night. I still play, but usually only when I've arranged to meet up with someone ahead of time. Your best times to snag me are after 8:30pm PST. Usually the kids are all in bed by then, lol.
Yeah, I agree. My best time is after 8PM EST, after my son is in bed. He keeps asking me if he can play GTA and I keep telling him, "no."

http://www.nes-snes-sprites.com/NES%20Soundtracks/snes_soundtracks.html The other day I was talking to someone about the music of the original NES Ninja Turtles game and found a YouTube video featuring the main song. As I played it I noticed a link the comments where someone had captured all the music from classic games and made them available for download.

Have you played FFXIV? If so, what are your thoughts about the game? Also, have you played FFXI? If so, what are your thoughts on that game and both games? I played XI, but not XV. I wasn't very successful with XI and I believe it's because I'm so used to being a solo gamer and apparently the game is primarily for parties, groups of people... Read All So, I was having a cool conversation with a sales associate at GameStop today, and it made me think more about this post that I'm creating. She mentioned that she was playing Final Fantasy XV: A Realm Reborn. I asked if she played FFXI, to which she replied, "no." Therefore, I have a few questions for you, my fellow Cheerful Ghosts.
Have you played FFXIV? If so, what are your thoughts about the game? Also, have you played FFXI? If so, what are your thoughts on that game and both games? I played XI, but not XV. I wasn't very successful with XI and I believe it's because I'm so used to being a solo gamer and apparently the game is primarily for parties, groups of people playing together. I did end up meeting a stranger, who was very helpful to me, which I thought was awesome. Apparently, the game just wasn't made for the solo gamer in mind. I do have all or most of the DLC. In fact, I won a free copy of Wings of the Goddess from a FFXI wiki, but I never played it or most of the DLC.
Therefore, my next question is if any of you have thought about playing FFXI again. This thought came into my mind some time ago. I can certainly afford the play the game again, if it still has a monthly fee. I'm not sure if it has gone free-to-play and it might be interesting to find out if it has or if it will some time in the future. I assume the servers are still running and it's still playable.
So, what are your thoughts on this subject?
*Note* Corrected mistake found via the comments.
I haven't played either. I stopped at Final Fantasy 6 and never looked back.
I missed the Playstation era FF games and haven't really seen a reason to head back. I know FF VII gets a ton of accolades and someday I might try it.
Will the ones I mentioned in this post are MMORPGs. I like almost every Final Fantasy game I've played, which is almost all of them. I've only been disappointed a few times.
I haven't played FFXIV, but my wife and I played FFXI for something like four or five years. :P
Yeah, there wasn't much you could do in FFXI by yourself back then. It's different now, but you still need a party for most of the big activities.
Both me and the Mrs. were interested in FFXIV when it was announced but we didn't have computers powerful enough to play it. by the time we upgraded we had pretty much given up on MMO's in general.
Oh, crap, I see I made an error. I was talking about FFXIV and XI, not XV. Thanks for showing me that. Wow, that's a lot of time spent on FFXI! I had two characters, at least. One was one of the little ones and the other a Hume. I was expecting to meet friends in Windhurst, but I apparently got confused and set that as my home. I eventually made it to where the Hume home is. I forget the names. I think I was on the Bahamut server.
Ha ha, it's ok. I knew what game you meant.
The hume/galka home city was Bastok, and was always my nation of choice. We had Cid, so we were clearly the best. I was on the Cerberus server
I had 3 characters but really only played one: My Hume Taion. One of my favorite things about FFXI is that you had no real reason to have multiple character because you could be every job on one character. Although my main job was a level 75 Samurai, I also dabbled with Ninja, Dragoon, Summoner, and Blue mage, and of course I leveled several sub-job options like Warrior, Thief, and Dancer. At one point or another I played every job at least a little except for Scholar, which came out shortly before I quit.
Wow that's awesome!!!!! Have you been at all tempted to play again?
As a matter-of-fact I picked it back up for a little while about two years ago. Here's my post about it: http://cheerfulghost.com/WhiteboySlim/posts/404/so-i-ve-been-a-bit-absent-from-the-cheerful-ghost-community
Every once in awhile I think about picking it up again, but the game really has changed a lot since I played. While some of the changes are improvements that were very welcome (more solo friendly, quicker leveling, making the game easier in general) a lot of what i loved about the game is no longer there. One of my favorite things about FFXI when I started playing was the party dynamic, especially the skillchain/magic burst system. That's why I ended up with Samurai as my main job, because that class specializes in skillchains. :)
Parties just don't work like that anymore in the game. Add in that the number of players in general has dropped significantly and there are especially no low level characters around anymore and it's just not the same FFXI I use to play. Sometimes you just can't go home.
And of course there's the fact that the game is still subscription based and I just don't have enough free time to commit to a game to justify paying a monthly fee. That said, if it ever went free-to-play (which I highly doubt it ever will) I'd definitely play it again just so I could go through the story missions again.
Awesome, I'll check it out. Some of the things you mention make me want to play it again. I might have stated, but what my main issue seemed to be was that it was very party based and I'm a solo gamer. What you said about fewer people and some of the improvements makes sense and makes it seem like it's more solo-friendly.
It would be cool if it went free-to-play. I did notice that it's still the same price per month as it was before and FFXIV is the same. I'm tempted to try to jump back in the game and/or give FFXIV a try.
Thanks for commenting! =)
As for my MMO history, I've played Ragnarok Online with friends, which was a lot of fun, and Star Trek: Online. Unfortunately, in the latter, my first character was stuck on Earth, I couldn't get off because of a bug and the fact that I didn't visit the right place first. So, I deleted it and created a new one, but I have unfortunately been unable to defeat the Borg in the very beginning of the tutorial. This wasn't a problem with my first character.
I tried Ragnarok back when it was in open beta. It was pretty fun but I was still pretty heavily into FFXI at the time, so I didn't stick around. Never tried Star Trek Online.
I played City of Heroes/Villains for a couple months. That game had the best, most in-depth character creator I have ever seen and was worth trying for that alone. I only played it for about 4 months total, but I have more fond memories of my characters there than any other MMO other than FFXI.
A few months before the Cataclysm expansion for WoW hit, a group of my old FFXI friends all signed up for WoW, so my wife and I jumped in as well. It was fun for a little bit, but again we just couldn't devote enough time to playing it to justify the monthly subscription. So we quit.
Runes of Magic is a fun free-to-play MMO. I haven't played it in years, but I think it's still going strong. I should check it out again sometime.
I played Lord of the Rings Online briefly when several CG members signed up. That's another one I should try out again sometime.
And last but not least, I play Star Wars: Old Republic with a friend. We basically treat it like KOTOR3 with co-op and we've been going through our class quest lines just for kicks. Although technically "free to play" I'd argue that. Instead I'd say they have one hell of a great free trial, but if you really want to play the game you'll have to fork over a little cash at some point. That said, I've only sunk about $5 into it and I feel I've gotten way more out of it than a lot of other games at that price.
Wow, that's awesome!

Wow! That looks so incredibly cool!
Ha ha ha, this is awesome.
The first episode contains so many Star Wars references and I was happy to have noticed them. First thing that might be of note is that the characters take a chartered flight on "Star Tours." They base the ship and Rex pilot after the old Star Tours ride before Disney refurbished it a few years ago.
... Read All Ever since Disney bought LucasFilm I have been awaiting new StarWars content. Immediately Disney queued up Star Wars VII with JJ Abrams directing as well as Star Wars: Rebels a new Disney XD animated show. I wasn't terribly interested in Star Wars: Rebels but after seeing episode one available for a free download in iTunes, I decided to give it a shot.

One of the Driods in the pilot is based on an original Ralph McQuarrie Star Wars concept painting.

The characters based on McQuarrie concept paintings doesn't stop there, one of the main characters Zeb is based on the original concept for Chewbacca.

That said, references alone don't make a show great and i'd say the show stands on it's own in terms of likable characters and a serviceable plot. They do a very good job in the first episode and based on it, i'd love to continue watching it. My only gripe is that they only have 22 minutes and i'd like a bit more time in the universe with the characters. That said, if you are looking to get a fun Star Wars fix, the new Rebels show is worth looking into.

This is very cool. I'm definitely going to have to look into this!
How are the wireless controllers? I've read some bad reviews about them. But the rest seems awesome.
And does it have Toejam & Earl? I loved that game as a kid!
Doesn't look like it includes Toejam and Earl.
I AM SO ANGRY
The controllers seemed to work fine for me. I didn't like the very small screw that I had to take out to insert batteries. I had trouble getting that screw back in, so I just left it out. I played Sonic a bit, my son played it and some of the other games, too. Looking at the list of games, it doesn't seem to have Toejam & Earl. Jurassic Park was one of my favorite games on the console, but it doesn't seem to be included either.
Oh man, Jurassic Park on the Genesis was frustrating as hell, but a lot of fun. I had forgotten it existed.
