Curious what your thoughts are here as this will be one of the main topics in the next Roundtable.
That said, I want it to be clear that I love Valve and to date they are doing a great job. I just wonder if the gravy train of awesome will ever stop, like it often does with many companies that change over time.
I don't know. Don't know if I have it in me to speculate on the future of Valve as a company. It doesn't really seem relevant to anything. Will Valve always be successful? No idea. If they make smart business decisions, they should be. Will they flip and turn into EA? Maybe. Could they at one point stop making games altogether and focus primarily on hardware and their new OS? Sure, that's possible, maybe even probable.
The thing about Valve is that, because they are in such a state of evolution and operate on their own time, everything is speculative. I've had my ear to the ground of the industry for over a decade, and anyone's guess could hold water over mine.
Then there is Ferguson. I don't really expect us to talk about that, but why not? I know it's a heavy thing, a very sensitive thing, but we have a spotlight... Well, maybe more of a reading light, but I would feel weird if the people that did watch only heard us take wild guesses at what Valve's status might be in the coming years. And this isn't a flag of self-righteousness that I'm trying to wave, just a singular opinion. No judgement whatsoever. I could talk about games forever, maybe just not right now.

I think if everyone is down, I don't mind talking about Ferguson at all. I think you're right too, it does seem a bit off.
I was just talking with a friend the other day and conversation seemed interesting BUT Ferguson is more important to be sure.
I worry about how presumptuous a group of white, relatively well-off, mostly male, west coasters could be. Even with good intentions. I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say that none of us have the experience or knowledge base to do much more than speculate about this as well.
If you want to use your "reading light" for good, shine it at resources for and about the people involved. Amplify voices who get shoved to the back, rather than continuing to amplify your own (on this topic).

Good point. I think we want to do something to help even if it isn't the worlds best approach.
@TheLela"Amplify voices who get shoved to the back, rather than continuing to amplify your own (on this topic)."
Do you mean Ferguson, specifically, or racism in general?
The goal of the conversation wouldn't be to discuss the specific facts of the case in Ferguson as they exist today, rather to speak to the nature of racism in the country and what we can do to be better people. Racism is a specific form of fear, but a symptom of a larger lack of love in our society. Taking a gun away from a killer won't stop him from killing, it'll just stop him from killing with a gun (i.e. there are bigger issues at stake)
I totally agree with you, that we should highlight stronger voices, and rally behind them. One of the things that I see, especially in social media, however, is the amount of misinformation and conjecture being spread around. Raising awareness is one thing, but feeding an alarmist, impulsive mindset can be harmful to progress. The national media isn't helping, either.
Again, my hope is that our conversation will draw attention to the issue, not our own voices. I also hope that it spawns healthy conversation and questions among our members.

As someone that has always loved comic books, it's been a bit sad to spend most of my adult life not reading them. The only series to catch my attention was Hellboy and beyond that, I haven't read much I enjoyed. During the recent Humble Walking Dead Bundle they were giving out the first 3 issues for free. So, like many, I downloaded the first 3 issues. I didn't get a chance to read them during the bundle but started them a bit thereafter. I was immediately impressed with the black and white style and bleak tone. I appreciate that comics style in that it is serious, but isn't so serious it gets boorish or overly dark. Many of the scenes play out and let the "comic" nature of the story at times be, well, comical(Grimes getting hit with a shovel comes immediately to mind).
As an entrant to the whole Zombie resurgence, The Walking Dead hit things off in 2003 with well used idea from 28 Days Later. The main character, police officer Rick Grimes wakes up from a coma after the Zom-pocalypse has hit. Whereas this story device wasn't original to the series, it's use here was great and it didn't feel dumb or cliche. In fact, what better way to bring the main character to the new Zombie-Earth?
After reading the 3 free issues I needed more as the story gets so great I wanted to keep going. The Humble Walking Dead Bundle was finished and so I couldn't pick up volumes 1-5 for $15, which is a steal. Instead of nabbing the digital volumes I decided to opt for the Walking Dead Compendium Volume 1. Whereas it includes Volumes 1-6 for a great price compared to buying them individually, it's pretty heavy. That said, as I have read it it hasn't been a huge deal and nothing beats how great it is to flip through the actual pages of a great story.
You can get the whole first issue of the Walking Dead free on ComiXology and I seriously recommend it. The Walking Dead is a series that allows DRM free downloads on comic sites that support that and as such if you want to get them digitally, I recommend ComiXology.
I've waited about as long as I can before jumping back into it. There are tons of features we haven't played with in our servers in the past (fishing, new styles of blocks, about 1000 items). We had discussed waiting for 1.3 which could be next week or it could be next year.
I got a feva, and the only prescription, is more Terraria! Who's with me?
EDIT: And how could I forget Mounts and minecarts? This is awesome.

I'm with you. I was even thinking of researching some places that host servers so we could create a Cheerful Ghost Terraria server. I've never played the game with anyone else, so I find it kind of curious and fascinating to think of joining a server. Can you chat/communicate?
I started a new character and world recently, but didn't play too long. I think it would be more fun having a server and playing along with you and others.

I popped into it recently, too, but didn't spend much time in it. I could probably attribute my lack of Terraria gaming to playing The Sims 2 and Starbound (nightly). I've just recently added Command & Conquer Red Alert 3, so that's what I'm playing now. Since I've had the C&C First Decade for a long time, I'm thinking of playing it starting at the beginning when I'm done with RA3, but that's all off-topic.
Have you or Jon looked into any servers? Would you like me to do some research into the matter? I know you guys are much busier than I am and am willing to help out in whatever way I can. =)

Not sure we've ever had more than 6 on a server, so the base price seems right.
I am in, but I don't think I can play as much as I have in the past. That said, i'd love to get a new bee mount ALTHOUGH it has a 1/100 chance of dropping!

OK so lets talk about rules. In the past we'd talked about allowing teleportation to major areas from the get-go, rather than waiting until hardmode unlocks them. This assumes that's still something everyone thinks is a good idea. If not, I can take that out. SO, without further ado-- proposed rules:
1. Be excellent to each other. Don't mess with people's stuff or their builds unless they've said it's ok. (I doubt this one even needs to be said with you guys) 2. Keep your builds at least three blocks above ground to allow people to pass freely, or build underground. 3. This is a server for new characters, and you should use only items you find as you play this character with the exception of the few starter items we provide in the starter chest (platforms, torches, potions, magic mirror), any items that are only aesthetic (vanity items, special kinds of blocks), or wiring tools (teleporters, switches, etc). Basically, don't use anything to give yourself an advantage over anyone else.
Also, since they've added the ability to run up one block steps and make inclines, it would be kinda interesting to try not leveling out the residential area, and try to build into the landscape, but that's just an idea and you can do whatever you want with your build, as long as it isn't disruptive to movement through the area.
Since the minecart is available to craft starting at tier one, does it make sense to allow teleportation or just build carts? That said, Teleportation is way cooler and it might be nice to not rebuild stuff twice.
That said, these rules look good Travis.

Oblivion is good and if you loved Skyrim, it is work checking out. That said, if you loved Skyrim i'd also recommend Fallout 3.
That said, Oblivion is good but I didn't really enjoy the rift/portal parts. I won't say much more about that because it's somewhat spoilerish BUT the rest of the game is good and I quite enjoyed it. I stopped playing it on PS3 because I became a Vampire and to undo that would have taken hours. So, unless you want to be one, avoid Vampirism :D
Oblivion is awesome, but the leveling system sucks. If you're playing on PC, I highly recommend you pick up a leveling mod. :) A quick google search will turn up several, just pick the one that you think sounds the best. (For the record, this is the one I used: http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/13879/).
Fallout 3 is also awesome! And the change of setting might be nice since you just played one medieval fantasy game. Either way you go I think you'll have fun. :)
Agreed on the leveling mod, but I may (MAY) prefer Oblivion to Skyrim. There's just something magical about it.

Go for it! That's exactly what I did recently. After having played Skyrim and Oblivion on the PS3 and getting a new PC, I decided to play both games again (but on the PC instead). They're great! I pretty much agree with what everyone else has said thus far. I don't recall much of anything that I disliked about Oblivion, except for having to use Repair Hammers, which worked out well anyway. I don't fully agree with WBS about the leveling. I agree and disagree with him. On my first play through, the game seemed difficult as I often died. The second time around was much easier, probably because I was more cautious and knew what was going on. I agree with Travis that Oblivion is "magical." That probably better explains my feelings about the game as I fell in love with it. Fallout 3 is great, but is pretty buggy even on the PC (mine crashed often).

All hell breaks loose, and bad things happen. Fast forward eighty years, and the Enterprise is now adrift on the open ocean as a sea faring vessel. No, it's just the crew "relaxing" on the holodeck, and giving Worf an upgrade, and then making fun of him. Then Data shoves Beverly into the ocean, and all hell breaks loose. Then Guinan gets a weird feeling, and the Nexus comes, and all euphoria breaks loose. Picard has kids, Butler is alive, and Guinan is an even bigger mystery than ever before. Kirk is there, too, with Butler. This is a horrible summation of this movie. The end.
Since this forum entry is for those who have seen Generations to discuss Generations, the above paragraph is more or less pointless, but I was feeling saucy :).
Personally, I loved the ideas in this movie, for what it brings to Star Trek, and for science fiction in general. The cinema of the thing resonates with me to this day: The opening credit footage of the champagne bottle flying through space as it christens the Enterprise-B, the struggle of Dr. Soran to get to the Nexus, the subtle presence of Guinan at key moments, Data's struggle with emotion... Not to mention the properties of the Nexus and it's inhabitants, characters displaced in time, and some Klingon shenanigans with Geordi's visor, all add up to big pluses for me. Kirk's treatment was questionable. I didn't mind it as much, and I can explain later, but I can see why it didn't go over well with the fans.
Anyway, thoughts, anyone? What did you love/hate about Generations? What would you have done differently?
Thanks for posting this. I watched Generations a few days ago to refresh myself. That said, I'll be back to talk about it BUT I think the Red Letter Media Plinkett review of it is apt to start things off. I don't agree with all of it, but it is hilarious.

I love their Plinkett reviews, and I don't think I had seen this one yet. Hilarious, but very good points. I remember thinking it was stupid that Picard chose that time to go to when leaving the Nexus. I didn't make any sense. With infinity at his disposal, he chose to give himself the smallest window of opportunity to fix his problem.
Yeah I don't understand why people disliked this one. Nemesis, yeah. Insurrection, OK. But Generations is good stuff for the most part You're right, Kirk deserved better, but it was a nice movie to officially pass the torch. I just wish we'd seen a Deep Space Nine movie. Not sure how they could have pulled off Voyager, but DS9 had some more stories to tell. Hopefully something to retcon the last few episodes.
The Red Letter Media Plinkett Review was pretty good, but I don't really agree with all of it. They are right that Generations is darkly filmed and in some shots, not great, but that's not a huge deal.
That said, I watched Generations a few days ago and largely it's a great movie. In fact, i'd say I enjoyed it more watching it now than when I did originally. Originally I was pretty let down by it, but I can't say for what reason.
That said, the start of the film is nice, I liked how it started with Kirk, Chekov and Scotty. Like scrypt said, the way they open up with TNG crew was great. Malcom McDowell as the bad guy was great. What made him bad was a bit off. If the Nexus is so powerful to trap people, then why was it so easy for Kirk and Picard to leave it?
All told, I really enjoyed myself and thought it was a fun ride. Kirk at the beginning of the film is really different to the character Picard finds in the Nexus. Kirk was fun, but he wasn't outright silly. It's not that I demand "serious Kirk" or anything, but he was serious enough and funny enough in the original films and the Kirk after the Nexus was written a bit too silly for me. I don't mind the way in which he died, or that he died at all, it was fine. Death or no death, they wanted to pass the torch to TNG crew.
I like Generations, but I think it had a couple things going against it that unfortunately made people judge it a little too harshly. For starters the movie came out not too long after TNG wrapped up, and the series finale was AWESOME. With the show leaving on such a high note I think expectations for the movie were pretty high. It's already been mentioned, but the way they killed of Kirk was pretty lame. If you're going to kill off a beloved character, you need to give them a better death than that. I also think the movie had a problem with not raising the stakes high enough for a movie. I could easily see Generations being a two part episode of the main series and it would probably hold up a lot better if it had been. We see the first star get destroyed in a system that may or may not be populated (do they ever say? I don't remember). Now the second time Soran goes to destroy a star we're at least told that there is a populated planet near by, but that's about it. We don't ever see the alien population, and it's not a previously known species, so we have no real reason to care about what happens to them as an audience.
Hmmm, I was going to type a much longer post but my son is currently hitting me with a light saber, and I think I need to go defend myself. I'll be back later. :P I'll also try to watch that red letter media review and come back with my thoughts on that.

I don't remember the transition from the show to the movie, but you're right, All Good Things was absolutely awesome. I don't think I've ever seen a show wrap up so nicely, with such strong characters, and putting the entire history of the show into a specific perspective. I guess Lost tried to do this, in recent memory, but it didn't work as well.
One thing that keeps bugging me, now that I've seen the RLM review, is the drastic change in Picard's personality and values, in Generation, and in all of the TNG movies. I think I was so caught up in the spectacle to really notice it.
The part comparing the show and the movie in regard to the Kurlan naiskos was hilarious. That seems like another big hole.
Picard's personality and values is a HUGE deal but it doesn't make Generations a bad film. It makes the films really inconsistent and sad, in a way, but it doesn't make it bad perse.
The Kurlan naiskos bit might have been a Generations in-joke, the RLM review assumes it's just a prop, it might have been a Generations set crew joke.
@WhiteboySlim: I really liked the stakes of Generations. In fact I really liked that it seemed like a longer episode. As I watched it recently I was like, "this movie is a film adaptation of a great TNG episode at it's prime." For that, I really liked it. Plus the stakes were about a large as a normal episode, which I appreciate. It seems that every movie wants to make the main characters save the Universe and I am getting a bit tired of that. Most of the time, the stakes aren't that high and I appreciate that Generations took it back some. Soran was a bad-guy, but he wasn't a moustache twirling cliche.
So yeah, those aspects worked for me pretty well.

I recently finished playing Oblivion on the PC. I thought I'd give Morrowind another try afterwards. I have the game disc, but not the DLC, so I decided to buy the Game of the Year Edition on Steam. After a couple of days, I feel like playing something else, but don't know what. That's why I'm asking for your game recommendations. Fable is one of the recommendations I have from Steam, but I'm not sure about it. I saw some other games listed in the recommendations section that may be like Terraria and Starbound, so I may look into those games as well. So, gamers, what's good?

I'm currently eyeballing a game called Edge of Space. It is like Terraria and Starbound, so much so that it also includes some Terraria content. The game is still in development, but available on Steam's Early Access. I'm wondering what my fellow Terraria fans think of this game or if they've tried it out.
I love the Fable games, and now that Microsoft has changed it's mind about shuttering Games for Windows Live, they are once again safe to purchase (for now...).
Games I enjoyed recently: BioShock Infinite, Wolfenstein: New Order, Portal 2(again), Ittle Dew & Shovel Knight.
If you play Edge of Space let me know what you think of it, it looks really interesting.

Yeah, I saw Fable was only $10-20. I haven't played it before and one of my friends compared Skyrim to it years ago when we were playing that.
In the mean time, I haven't seen anyone post about Edge of Space, which is kind of weird seeing as how we're Terraria lovers. It is not Terraria, but it does come with some Terraria content in one edition at least. So, maybe I'll be the Edge of Space pioneer here. I'll probably make a new post for it. I've just finished the some what quick tutorial and am now not sure what to do or how to heal, so I'll give it some more time before creating that kind of post.
Right now, it looks cool. Some of it needs some polishing, which shouldn't be a big surprise, but a lot of what I refer to is some graphical bits. The cinematic didn't look like a high quality video. There are some other minor things I've seen such as how some menus could be cleaned up to look a little better, but that's just minor stuff. I enjoyed the tutorial, even though it didn't tell me how to heal myself.
To me it looks like Starbound but perhaps a bit more Terraria like? That said, I am glad more people are entering that space Terraria/Starbound open world 2D building game space.
I wrote a comment and posted it but it appears to be missing now. Anyway...
Adym, saying that Dishonored is a Bethesda game isn't entirely accurate-- it was published by Bethesda but not developed by them. It's a Bethesda game in the same sense as Quake 2 is now. Perhaps I'm being pedantic :) It's still great though, from what I've played.
Edge of Space looks interesting. I've almost pulled the trigger a few times, but never have until tonight (it's in the humble bundle flash sale with a ton of other games. Stacking is worth the Beat-the-Average price of $10). It's apparently more action/survival focused than Terraria. There's no melee, only ranged weapons.
From what I hear, it's one of the good Early Access games, which is to say it's basically finished but they just keep adding more to it.
@Travis yeah you know I think it looks good too. But I am back to where I come to with Early Access games and I kind of just want to play it when it launches. You don'y know HOW FREAKING HARD it's been to hold off on getting Broforce. Then again, when they add the Alien/Contra themed levels and the ability to upload levels you made to the Steam workshop I may just have to buy it.
I mean, i've played the demo and it's awesome... but. Early access...

Well, I guess we'll be the Edge of Space Pioneers of Cheerful Ghost, Travis. I read a bit of a Steam thread today about Terraria vs. Starbound vs. Edge of Space and it was pretty cool. I enjoyed Starbound mostly when I first played, but it hit a point to where I lost purpose. It's still Early Access, at least as far as I know. Terraria seems to be the inspiration with Starbound and Edge of Space, which I think is great because Terraria is such a great game and I want more.
I wonder if I shouldn't use the maximum resolution for the game, maybe I'll get used to it.
This needs to be the next viral fundraising campaign!
