Death Stranding, the weird-ass game from Kojima that had many people scratching their heads a few years ago at E3, has a new trailer and I gotta say... I'm still scratching my head.
Not in a bad way. At least now there's something more concrete. This game looks absolutely stunning and the cast is phenomenal. Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Lea Seydoux, Margaret Qualley, Guillermo de Toro, Troy Baker... I'd watch that movie. Instead, we get to play it.
Kojima tweeted some info about it to further clarify: People have built "Walls" and become accustomed to living in isolation.

"DEATH STRANDING" is a completely new type of action game, where the player's goal is to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society. All elements, including the story and gameplay, are bound together by the theme of "Strand", or connection.
As Sam Porter Bridges, you will attempt to "Bridge" these divisions, and in doing so, create new bonds or "Strands" with other players around the globe.
Through your experience playing the game, I hope you'll come to understand the true importance of forging connections with others.
Now please enjoy the latest Death Stranding trailer.

So yeah, I'm interested. I'm going to hold my enthusiasm until we get some reviews in I think because I barely know what the gameplay will even be like at this point, but I'm far beyond intrigued.
I was wondering who made this game. And then as I kept watching the trailer I was confused as to whom the lead designer of the game was. When I read all the marketing materials I was also in the dark as they didn't say who the creative visionary of this game was still.
It's too bad whomever made this game doesn't let us know because whomever they are they must like to keep a low profile.
Also this game does seem odd but mostly because the graphics seems super uncanny valley. I'm sure the gameplay is fine, but the cut scenes look off.

I have some last minute changes to my Rage 2 thoughts. After playing it much more over Memorial Day, things clicked way more for me. Stay tuned for a full review!
I got the new pilotable mech, it's fun but REALLY SLOW and takes $1000 to call in. I saved to see if it was outside the place I found it but yeah, after you get it the first time you really need to stick with it or it will cost a heft 1k to bring back. Not a huge deal I guess but the choice between a mod or using the mech.

Yesterday iD Software launched Rage 2 which has been one of my most anticipated games coming out this year. I solidly boarded the hype train devouring all the trailers and early reviews and I can honestly say that it wasn't for naught, Rage 2 is a whole lot of fun.
A few details about me. I don't play a ton of shooter games anymore. Besides the occasional Fortnite and dabbling with the latest free to play battle arena for a few minutes, I play single player shooters every couple of years. Wanted to get that out of the way because my thoughts aren't from the point of view of a FPS connoisseur, if that's a thing.

The Day Santa Delivered Rage 2
Travis and I both pre-ordered Rage 2 on Amazon. We both are Dinosaurs and enjoy physical boxes of games that will really only be played digitally and even if the box really is just a thin wrapper over a game key. I just like putting a thing on my shelf and if the price is the same, why not? The day Rage 2 came was a lot like Christmas except Amazon let me see where Santa was the day my present arrived. Fun fact, Travis got his copy of Rage 2 first and he went in to pick it up from UPS and mine was delivered, no joke, 1 minute later. If you want to buy Rage 2 on PC in the box you might be interested to know that it's a fairly typical PC game case but doesn't actually contain a DVD install disc. Where the DVD install disc would go is a cardboard DVD-like disc that contains the Rage 2 game code you can redeem on bethesda.net (not Steam, more on that later). The Amazon pre-order also came with a Rage 2 XBox controller skin and a two page Rage 2 mini-booklet with the PC controls printed on it. Since I bought the deluxe version it also came with an insert for that DLC and Amazon emailed me my pre-order DLC. All told the game came with 3 codes and I was able to redeem them on bethesda.net and download the game on the Beth launcher with zero issues.
My First Hour of Rage 2
I knew Rage 2 wouldn't run to it's fullest extent on my ASUS ROG gaming laptop with a Nvidia 960M. It's a fairly powerful laptop with 16G of RAM and a full SSD drive but Rage 2's max specs blow my laptop out of the water. Still, I fit solidly in the minimum spec camp I just didn't know how well it would work. The first hour was rough as the graphical settings Rage 2 set me up with were really horrible looking. There was a pretty game here but I couldn't see it and spent quite a bit of time tweaking this and that to make it work to no avail.
How To Get Rage 2 To Run Better On a Laptop
I think running PC games on a PC laptop is a great idea because you can play all the games on PC with all the portability of a laptop. That said, your video card can't be upgraded which is a huge downside. Still, I like the flexibility but that doesn't always mean games work well with your laptop video card. One trick laptop manufacturers pull to get more battery life from your machine is have two video cards running. One card when your in battery mode and use another for plugged in that provides much more power to your graphically intensive applications such as games. My ASUS ROG has an Intel integrated card and a NVidia 960M. Windows 10 does a good job of autodetecting which to use but not always so and in the case of Rage 2 I had to tell Windows 10 to ALWAYS run it in high performance mode.
To do this click the Windows Bar / Settings / Gaming / Game Mode / Graphics Settings. Then select "Classic App" and then browse for the Rage 2.exe file. Then select options and always have Rage 2 set to High Performance. This forces Windows to always use the better video card and make Rage 2 look and play better than a Potato.
Uh, So Like Fine But What About the Game?
Right away Rage 2 starts out with an ultra campy intro cinematic where "General Angry Guy With A Human Head And Robot Body" wants to destroy mankind. He gives the campiest speech to a bunch of muscle marine looking guys that seem to soak up each of his insanely ridiculous words with super energetic grunts. The whole time General Angry guy was talking I noted how fun his speech was but also terrible, because I like being a person and don't want a robot body. Because, y'all, General Angry Guy wants to destroy mankind and turn us all into cyborgs. Cool campy concept but I actually like being human. I also realized later that General Angry Guy was asking a room full of muscle dudes to basically chop everything off dicks and all and they were all so very happy about it. I'm not saying making those kinds of choices are always bad, and feel free if that's for you, no judgement, but it just seemed odd to me so many people were super amped to never have human arms or legs again. Then again, this isn't supposed to be taken seriously and I loved the camp of it all I just took it seriously for a second and it was disturbing. Good thing Rage 2 will let me blow General Angry Guys head off before he forces us all to be worse for the wear.
Right away Rage 2 gets you going in a very "let me teach you the game" kinda mode. It's not very fun and it was compounded with it looking like a potato on my laptop. I guess if there was a part of the game that needed to suck graphically it's the first part and it wasn't that fun. Once the into part is all over and the game world opens up Rage 2 really gets it's wind and it's a blast.
That said, it took me a while to sink into a groove with the controls and how all the systems worked together. There is a lot to track with Rage 2 but after a bit, it it's fairly easy to play.
Rage 2 Feels Like A Solid Follow Up To Rage
I see a lot of people comparing Rage 2 to Mad Max and I'm sure the comparison holds as Rage 2 and Mad Max were both made by the same studio. That said as a huge fan of the original Rage, Rage 2 feels like a massive love letter and sequel to Rage. I thought Rage 2 would really jettison most of the feel and look of Rage but Avalanche Studios made a proper sequel that doesn't hide the best parts of Rage. They bring more to bear for Rage 2 including power-ups that feel at home or in the spirit of Doom 2016 but the shooter aspects feel more like a proper follow up to Rage than Doom 2016. Oh and the best part of Rage 2 is the core shooter loop and how frantic you feel in the thick of things. As you progress and unlock more abilities and better guns and these options make the game more fun and a bit easier. At one point I found a very large bandit area that I tried to clear four times and could not. It wasn't a handful of bandits but contained at least 30 or so and a boss fight at the top that was way too difficult for where my character was at the time. I plan on coming back to take it on at a later stage in the game and I already feel i'd do better with a bunch of new powers and guns to make it a bit easier.
Rage 2 In Stride
Rage 2 is a fun game to play in bursts and I plan to do that over the next few weeks. Also, the story isn't so riveting as to require a binge play-though, which I respect. If you are looking for a new shooter to play that's fun and will keep you entertained for a few hours I'd give Rage 2 a shot. That said, even if you buy Rage 2 on Steam it does require Bethesda.net for some functionality. I don't care about installing another PC launcher to play a game but I know some people might so it was worth mentioning. I've been playing Rage 2 on PC on the Bethesda launcher and I've had no problems and got incredibly fast download speeds on launch day.
If you're playing Rage 2 let me know how it's going in the comments!

Right now, none of the extra DLC seems to matter in Rage 2. I got the pre-order DLC which is a settler pistol, armor and a truck skin. I have the truck skin but no truck to use it with so I can't yet comment if that's cool. The pre-order DLC comes with a exclusive "Cult of the Death God" mission where you get the pistol and armor except I haven't played it yet. Could be cool, not sure yet. The digital deluxe DLC was some cheat codes which I haven't used and not sure I will along with the BFG 9000. This gun comes with 3 bullets and each other bullet costs $1k and you can't find any more in game anywhere. Seems like an odd choice and I haven't used the gun yet but it seems ultra overpowered so I haven't used it. The other cool bit of the digital deluxe is the first DLC pack included and since that's not out yet I can't comment.
I'm early still but so far, the pre-order DLC and digital deluxe stuff seem like a wash. I have high hopes for the Cult of the Death God mission but the pistol and armor don't seem like a hard requirement to play the game.

I don't mind paying a bit more to iD as I really liked the original Rage game but I'm not sure any of the DLC to this point has been super critical. That said, when I experience that stuff more i'll come back and let you know how it goes.
I'm also about five hours in and my experience has been mixed. This is not the fault of the game, though. Some games give me motion sickness and this is one of them, unfortunately. I can usually eliminate it with some settings changes but I haven't gotten there yet with Rage 2. So I'm not playing nearly as much as I want to. I've read that bright colors can cause stronger symptoms and that may be at play here because there is a TON of fuchsia. I love the look of it but maybe my eyes/stomach/head/etc do not.
But more to the point:
I love the campy plot, it feels like a throwback to late 90s/early 2000s FPS sensibilities in terms of plot and I love that. But it's much prettier than those games. The id engine always shines and it's definitely great here. The cheesy as hell intro kinda says "hey this isn't a serious shooter, have fun and turn off your brain" and I respect that.
Jon you're spot on with it feeling more like Rage than any other game. You can feel influences from elsewhere, and the powers you unlock even give me a Mass Effect vibe, but this has its own identity. If you liked the shooting mechanics from Doom or any other recent id game you'll feel right at home, but you can't play it the same way. To really get the best out of this game you have to play it tactically-- and it helps that the tactics involve some pretty badass powers and a lot of pew pew.
It's just pure fun.
It's not perfect though. Driving was my least favorite part about the first game, and that holds true for the sequel. It's a little dull. I had hoped that they would learn a few things from Borderlands (and I'm not even really a fan of driving in Borderlands).
Sometimes the various upgrade paths are vague until you understand it. I recommend reading guides like the one Jon posted. You aren't really going to spoil much plot because the plot is fairly thin (to the game's credit, honestly).
From what I have read, it seems like the average gamer will probably get 25-30 hours out of this and that feels perfect. They could have tightened it up and made it feel a little more active by shrinking the map a bit so travel time wasn't as much of a factor but that's a minor complaint.
Overall I'm looking forward to seeing what the next 20-25 hours have to offer.

Rage 2 community goals are up. Seems like if we all get a certain number of kills on a theme we get a skin. Cool idea.
"Bandit Camps are now replayable! Open your map and select any previously cleared bandit camp to replay them as much as you'd like -- and get rewarded. "
Cool.
"Wasteland Wizard now only travels to 3 different locations instead of 15."
Cool but I haven't found him at all yet. Not that I'm looking, I'm not. The cheats sound interesting and I have some but I haven't tried them.
I've stumbled upon the Wasteland Wizard a couple times but decided to ignore him because I never felt the need to cheat actually.

Yeah. I've found that after you get quite a few powers, level up your abilities and have a decent FPS count the game isn't too hard. Then again I'm on normal so I've never felt the need to cheat. But I did do a quest earlier than I should have and needed the BFG but .... I prob won't do that next time

You can pair a MFI controller with Steam Link on your Apple device, Steam controller in bluetooth mode or use touch if you prefer. I was surprised to find touch isn't too bad and many games already have somewhat serviceable controller configurations for them. The touch controls are a bit janky but they work so if you are playing a very slow turn paced game you might be able to kick back and play it in bed or on the couch on your phone. That said, I was itching to try my Steam Controller and it worked perfectly. Steam in home streaming has also improved quite a lot such that even if both devices are on wifi things work fairly well with minimal lag. The video isn't always great but it works way better than when I tried it over a year ago on the same wifi hardware. Valve recommends at least one device plugged in to your wired network, but again, if both are in 5G wifi at least on my home ultra fast wifi things worked quite well. Hat tip to Valve here it seems they haven't stopped working on their in home streaming and it really shows. I've wanted to play Portal 2 again and on my couch in the living room using the new Steam Link app on my Apple TV seems like a really good plan.
I just played shovel knight on my phone and Iām not feeling as kind as you with regard to touch controls but Iām amazed at the performance. They really have tweaked the hell out of their streaming performance.

Ok so the touch controls aren't good. That said they kinda work which is WAY better than I thought in that they would be entirely horrible. They aren't great, maybe border on bad but not a dumpster fire horrible. Which is totally what I love about Valve. They give you choices and options even if they aren't great to let you choose what you want to do. If people want to play Civ 6 stream to their phone over touch and find it awesome, go ahead. I really appreciate that because other companies wouldn't let you even try. Valve does.
Ok thatās entirely fair yeah. I agree with your more detailed take on it. The fact that I could make it through half a level in Shovel Knight is noteworthy even if it did make me want to throw my phone. š

There are a raft of other new features such as full day and night cycles that change up the levels quite a bit, as well as a new Super Mario 3D World themed level set! Many people noted that the Super Mario 3D World level set is under "Extra Game Styles" section leading many to think more styles could be on the way?
Nintendo has released a lot of game DLC for Switch games free for early adopters so I hope if they are releasing more levelsets that they are free for the early folk that bought the game.
Super Mario Maker 2 on Switch is a day one purchase for me, but then again if it was just Mario Maker on the Switch it would have been but these new features really make it much more compelling!
This was already a day-one buy for me. Now itās a reason to get Nintendo Online too.

Civ 6 was the cure I needed, but didnāt think I wanted. I had gotten bored of video games and wasnāt sure what to do. I was hesitating to buy GS, because I didnāt really feel like playing a strategy game like Civ 6 and I was intimidated by the game. However, I am absolutely glad that I bought GS. Since then, I canāt stop playing Civ 6.
The theme of GS is climate change and global warming. Cities can now be powered by coal, oil, and uranium, each having itās own impact on the environment. You can make power plants in industrial zones, which you will need eventually as some district improvements need power to operate fully such as the stock exchange. Unfortunately, like in the real world, these power plants add CO2 into the atmosphere and cause irreparable damage. Some tiles are below sea level and will flood once CO2 levels reach a certain point. There is a new icon or place in the game where you can check to see how the environment is doing. There are also rivers that flood and volcanoes that are quite destructive.
Luckily there are ways to combat climate change (again just like in real life). You can build dams to stop the rivers from flooding (but you can do nothing to stop the volcanoes). You can build hydroelectric dams, solar farms, wind farms, and offshore wind farms. Also each energy source has itās own level of impact on the environment. Coal has a heavy impact, oil is moderate, and uranium is mild. However, uranium power plants have a chance to melt down. Because of this, Iāve never built one. You can also use the Carbon Recapture project later in the game that can actually negate all of the CO2 in the atmosphere that everyone puts in.
GS also adds the World Congress in which civs get to vote on different things. For instance, which luxury resources will be doubled, receiving more points for a certain great person, and quite a few more choices. Civs can vote for or against different things. They can spend diplomatic favor in order to sway the vote. These can be obtained in a variety of ways. There is also a new victory condition, Diplomatic Victory. Players vote for or against which civ receives 2 diplomatic points. When a civ reaches a certain amount of points, they win a Diplomatic Victory. There are numerous ways to gain diplomatic favor and diplomatic points. One way to get 2 diplomatic points is to build the Statue of Liberty.
Another addition to the game are new civs such as the Maori, Sweden, Canada and more. The Maori are quite unique, because they start the game in the ocean and able to traverse deep ocean tiles. Their music is also quite unique. Canada is unique, too, as they can get bonus production in tundra tiles. Also, you cannot declare a surprise war on Canada and they canāt declare a surprise war on other civs.
Iāve only kind of briefly covered this expansion. I strongly suggest checking it out if youāre interested. Civ 6 is (in my opinion) one of the best games in recent years and this expansion adds more to it, making it more playable. Previously, I had looked at some of the achievements and I got some of them, but others looked too difficult to get or bother with. However, I found a great guide online that offers strategy tips for obtaining each achievement. It also made me realize that you can actually play the game in multiplayer by yourself. There is a āhot seatā mode where players can play on the same computer and just take turns using the same keyboard and mouse. Itās really cool, still fun (to play by myself), and makes some of those achievements much easier to get. For instance, one requires that you capture a settler with a Viking Longship. Instead of waiting for the AI to have a settler at a coast, you can (as one player) send a settler to the coast and (as another player) capture it. This made a lot of achievements possible for me. I also learned how to use the command console. You need to edit a config file to enable it, but then you can hit a key to activate it. One of the commands you can use is āreveal allā which will show you everything on the map. This is incredibly handy, especially in cases where youāre trying to make sure a certain natural wonder or city-state is on the map. This can be done only in single player, but you can save your game, open it in multiplayer and copy some of the game configurations to recreate it. If you want to know more about this, just do some Googling. :)
That guide will also kind of explain how to play multiplayer "hot seat" games by yourself, so that you don't have to wait for the AI to do something you want it to. However, from what I've read on the web it seems this mode is not available in the Switch version (PC Master Race!!!!!).
For those achievements that require certain natural wonders or city-states on the map check out this link for how to access the command console and use the "reveal all" command, extremely helpful!Ā https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=804400692
> Civ 6 is (in my opinion) one of the best games in recent years and this expansion adds more to it, making it more playable.
That's great to hear as Civ VI is one of the top games I want to buy on the Switch. I've heard the port is really good and playing it in handheld mode is surprisingly intuitive.
> This pretty much make all achievements possible for me. I also learned how to use the command console. You need to edit a config file to enable it, but then you can hit a key to activate it. One of the commands you can use is āreveal allā which will show you everything on the map.
Cool. It's fun to play games this way and I'm glad developers still add these modes in.

I believe I read that hot seat mode is not in the Switch version. Still it's a damn good game. If you enjoyed Civ Rev you'll probably enjoy Civ 6. I may get into older Civ games as I can't seem to get enough now lol.

Jon, I added a note at the end w/ some good links. I also strongly recommend watching the video I embedded in this post as it covers some things I left out, like the new scenarios (which I haven't played *yet*).
My love for this game has grown since GS came out and I want more. I found a Civ anthology collection on Steam I may buy during the summer sale.

A new fan-made scene by FXitinPost of the fight between Vader and Obi-Wan at the end of Star Wars Episode IV.
It's very cool, and I love the emotion of it. Check it out and post your thoughts below!

1. I don't consider this scene from a New Hope to be bad. Perhaps that's nostalgia blinders? I've heard people say it's hokey and even George Lucas seems to dog it when he talks about it. That said I've always considered it to be fine, if not a bit bland which this fixes but with a few downsides and not a lot of upside.
2. I always viewed the old New Hope fight as Obi Wan not really trying to kill Vader and it seemed like Vader was holding back too. Like Vader and Obi Wan were just talking and not really trying to kill each other. At the point in the story, Obi Wan wanted to stall Vader and let Leia, Luke and Han escape. The fight was on his terms and at no point did Vader ever "get Obi Wan" or hurt him because he couldn't. I'd argue because Obi Wan was so powerful, Vader couldn't have but winning in that way wasn't Obi Wan's goal. Frankly I think this makes Luke's last stand in the Last Jedi even more powerful it's a direct mirror of this fight in a New Hope. Luke exiting the scene just like his teacher. And this video doesn't seem to revel in that, it's just Vader being a badass and Obi Wan getting knocked around and seems to imply he's Vaders lesser, which I think isn't how I look at it.
3. When Obi Wan loses in this version it has less weight because he's simply a less talented Jedi, not because he chooses to save anyone. I think this is a repeat of 2 but it's important.
I also think something else is going on in this scene. As Obi Wan is trying to stall Vader two things are happening. Firstly Vader is thinking he's toying with Obi Wan and chides him as being weak. Obi Wan stays on message and calls Vader evil, and that he failed as a teacher. I think what Obi Wan is doing is playing weak or not trying to get Vader to focus on toying with him to get him to lose interest in Leia, Luke and Han who are escaping (I didn't forget Chewie, R2 or C3PO). When he realizes they are going to be ok Obi Wan lets go. I don't read this scene as Vader is more powerful, but Obi Wan has a different goal and he's not trying to "out lightsaber Vader" and Vader actually thinks Obi Wan is weak, which I think is a trick Obi Wan is playing on Vader.
After Revenge of the Sith, Vader would have an axe to grind in this way too BUT I imagine that wasn't as well formed when this scene was written and I still think if it wasn't my read makes sense.
Oh and I misspelled Obi-Wan a lot so apologies to everyone reading that dying a little inside. My son has been acting up a bit today and I had to type fast to get this out.
That's always been my read on the scene, and I think Revenge of the Sith strengthens that interpretation. But the fight has always been janky, even if their intentions were stalling/toying with each other. The first time I saw it I interpreted the fight the same as you but chuckled at the choreography a bit. As I have said before I don't have any childhood nostalgia for Star Wars so that may be a factor. The first time I saw it was the special edition in the theater and I actually fell asleep for about 30 minutes in the middle. I've come a long way :D
But I don't think anyone involved said they were trying to fix the scene at any rate, just reimagining it.
