It makes it hard to get in and play with your friends if you friend new to the game doesn't have all the content but Blizzard just made it a lot easier.
"The Battle for Azeroth pre-patch is here, and with this update weāre making some exciting changes to the way players access to World of Warcraft. Starting today, new players can gain access to all World of Warcraft content up through and including the Legion expansion simply by becoming a subscriberāyou no longer need to purchase the original World of Warcraft base game. In addition, all existing World of Warcraft subscribers have automatically been upgraded to Legion at no additional cost."
This is part of a push to get more World of Warcraft players but I wonder what the overall end game is? All other MMO's seem to be free to play and I wonder if World of Warcraft will ever go that route? They make a ton on monthly subscriptions but I wonder a World where you can play Warcraft without a monthly sub? Any case it's a long time coming but I suppose time will tell.
Yeah it seems to be common for not-quite-free to play. You buy the game and the expansions but the monthly subscription is replaced with cosmetic microtransactions. Except for this one and Final Fantasy 11 and 14. The subscriptions seem to be working out for those.

"Taking a look at the legendary wavetable sound board from 1992! The Advanced Gravis Ultra Sound is still an awesome thing to experience with DOS PC games, assuming you can track one down."
I remember getting one of these in the late 90s on a hobby PC I had gotten from work. They'd upgraded to one that was only 4 or 5 years old. What got me about it was how much easier it was to deal with. Basically if you had this or a SoundBlaster you were golden. Otherwise you had to deal with SoundBlaster emulation which was spotty.

I'm home sick with food poisoning but I set an alarm for 10:55 EST because I knew this trailer was coming out at 11. It was worth waking up for.
We've known for a little while that NEXT was coming, and that it was going to be the biggest update yet, and include more fleshed out multiplayer (the Atlas Rises update gave us a very rudimentary version with "glitches in the simulation" that were other players). This trailer is our first real peek inside.
The NEXT update is free, no paid DLC here, and it launches along with the Xbox One version coming the same day, July 24th.

The NEXT update is free, no paid DLC here, and it launches along with the Xbox One version coming the same day, July 24th.
UPDATE! I initially listed the changes I could see in the trailer, but Sean has posted some info on the Playstation blog. Here's a peek at the changes:
Multiplayer
Team up a small team of friends and explore the universe together, or be joined by random travellers.
You can help friends to stay alive, or prey on others to survive.
Tiny shelters or complex colonies that you build as a team are shared for all players.
Fight as a pirate or a wingman in epic space battles with friends and enemies.
Race exocraft across weird alien terrains, creating race tracks and trails to share online.
Character customisation allows you to personalise your appearance.
Visual Overhaul
The game is fully playable in third or first person, both on-foot and in ship.
Planetary rings and improved space visuals make space more beautiful than ever.
Dramatically improved planetary terrain generation, ground textures, water and clouds bring the environment to life.
Significantly more detail added to ships, NPCs and buildings.
Unlimited Base Building
Bases can now be built anywhere on any planet.
Dramatically increased base building complexity and size limits.
Hundreds of new base parts.
Own multiple bases.
Command Freighters
Assemble and upgrade a fleet of frigates and command them from the bridge of your freighter.
Send your fleet out to into the universe, or deploy them to help you as you explore a specific system.
Improved freighter base building allows a truly custom capital ship.
Invite your friends aboard and take on challenging multiplayer missions from the Galactic Commision Station on your bridge.
I'm looking forward to the lore that ties all this together. How can we suddenly see other simulation test subjects? Are there still multiple galaxies (which could fracture the playerbase and limit multiplayer)? What other small fixes and changes are there? Lots of questions are still present but this should stimulate your appetite for more No Man's Sky!

Ok at first, before watching the trailer, I wasn't too thrilled about the multiplayer, I just didn't feel like it was something I really needed. But after watching the trailer, I think it looks cool! In the first part, I thought (and hoped) that what the players were wearing was underwater gear, because the normal gear sucks underwater, at least swimming does. I knew this update was coming for a little while. I'm looking forward to jumping back in the game when this releases, I may start a fresh game again.
I might jump back in the game as well to check this out. We might have to set up a CG group in game!

Greg I agree that swimming always felt clunky but it also kinda makes sense that you move slower in water. Even if they do nothing else with swimming, I think the third-person camera will help. Seeing the swimming animation may make it feel less cumbersome.
But Iām hoping for some more water improvements too. It looks like you can build bases underwater now so Iām hoping that extra.

I see that, Travis. I hope they fixed it, too, but it does make some sense as you say. Also, I hope you feel better soon! I overlooked that part when I left my first comment.
I agree with Adam as a CG group is great idea. I wonder how we'll go about meeting up. I wonder if they'll explain how to when they release the update, or if they're just going to leave it up to us to figure out (I kind of doubt that though).
Travis Admin Post Author

Iām sure theyāll explain it somehow, and itāll probably be pretty intuitive. As it stands right now, itās kinda hard to find people but they havenāt had that focus before. The teleporters in stations and bases could have an option or something.
This update looks to fix nearly all the criticism leveled at the game at launch.
I imagine each person called this game "No Mans Lie" will retract their further statements and now call it "No Mans Actually The Full Game Will Come Two Years Later."
Jokes aside, this looks like they are getting ever closer to the 3D version of Starbound.

I wonder what those bipedal mech looking things are. Are they things that we hop in and go walking around in or is it something that maybe we pilot remotely?
Travis Admin Post Author

They look like larger sentinels. If you really anger the sentinels they send out walkers that look like that but theyāre about 1/3 the size. Since there were a few people running with them, Iām imagining itās something we can hack to work with us or something.
And yeah Jon, the SEAN LIED ABOUT MULTIPLAYER rhetoric was overblown but based in truth. Basically all the other launch complaints had been worked out except for this one.

They basically re-created the original trailer with the new stuff. Interesting to see how far the game has come but... even still I'd love to play the game with that original art style/color palette. By the time the game released they'd changed quite a bit.

Also Greg-- you mentioned how they might implement playing together. If you check this screen there's a clear portal placed on someone's base. That's absolutely new, and looks more like the portals you find out in the world and activate with glyphs, rather than the teleporters that are automatically in bases and space stations

@Travis, oh yeah, I see it! I forgot about sentinels, although it did look like those were with the players. Perhaps, like you said, we can hack them and turn them toward our favor. What would they do for us? Scouting perhaps? Man it's been so long since I've played, it's been 10 months.

In addition, since the Xbox version of this is a new release for the console, the new update is on the disc. There may be some updates on release day, but the core of it is definitely there. And as frequently happens, the street date was broken. So, if you want to search them out you can find videos of the new stuff.
A couple highlights I noticed: The water is so great. Itās way improved over the current water. And it looks like it reacts to things. You can fly right over it and tip your wing into it and it will create a ripple effect.
Space stations have been heavily redesigned and kinda look like the Citadel from Mass Effect. Thereās way more going on now. It actually looks like a space station instead of ... a boring place that people land.
Freighters have gotten a redesign and some new missions to spruce them up. You can build specific things for them to get new abilities.
We knew clouds would cast a shadow but it seems that storms actually follow cloud formations properly, and some really great weather effects have been added.
Building seems to be much easier than before.

I like how the scanner works now. I forgot about keys such as X and Z. If you want to change to first person you have to use the X menu, go to Utilities, and select the camera view option. Z is used to build things, although you can also pick some things back up and carry them with you. I tried numerous times to spawn a new game on a planet that wasn't hazardous, but that didn't work, so I settled. I eventually left the planet. Minerals are constantly changing names with these updates. They've added some things that make playing a bit more involved, like having to refine minerals. Building is different, you start out by building wooden things. For some reason I couldn't get through my door, or even find nearby ground that was flat enough for a building. In the end....things are different, although perhaps for the better overall.

When I saw that Nintendo was releasing a remake of Metroid II: Return of Samus I was very excited. I played a ton of the original Gameboy game and have very found memories of it. I'd argue the original Gameboy title is a good game but doesn't entirely hold up now but there is a lot there that's really fun and a remake seemed like a no-brainer.
I'd describe Samus Returns as the best parts of Super Metroid mixed with a fighting game.... sort of. I'd describe Samus Returns as the best parts of Super Metroid mixed with a fighting game.... sort of. The reason why the game feels like a fighting game is because Samus Returns includes a melee attack that is essential to progressing through the game. A lot of the time enemies will charge at you and the best way to kill them is to do a melee counter and shoot them. Learning how to do this effectively takes some practice and if you're not in tune with it you can take a lot of damage and die. It's not an impossible skill to learn but it requires focus and if you are rushing and don't time your counter attacks properly the game punishes you for it without feeling too punishing even if you die because of it.
The graphics of Samus Returns look like one of the better 3DS games but i'll admit that the best the 3DS can do is starting to show it's age a little. With that I'm not sure the fact that the 3DS is starting to show it's graphical limits compared to modest PC Indie games or the Switch is a big deal, but it's something I noticed. That said, the art style of the game is top notch and the 3D is absofrickin' incredible. I can't understate how cool the 3D effect on the 3DS is and Samus Returns really pops in 3D.
If you have a 3DS and are looking for a game to buy to put some life back in your handheld get Samus Returns. As Nintendo looks for the best of the Wii U catalog to port to the Switch I hope they consider porting some DS & 3DS titles to Switch too and Samus Returns would be a great contender. I'm strongly hoping that they port Ocarina of time 3D to the Switch too but if they don't I think that further cements the 3DS as a must have system for Nintendo lovers.

You essentially have to manage your sleep/energy/hunger/etc while making sure you have enough time to get to matches, and making sure you have enough money to do what you need to do. You can select the stats you want to improve by the different exercises at the gym, and you need to pick skills for your fights that match well with the stats you're strongest in, but you don't actually get to control the fights.
And that gameplay loop really works. It's a satisfying resource management game. The only issue I had with it was that the default may be a *little* too taxing. There's an easy mode that's just way too easy, but the normal mode can get frustrating early on.
That frustration dies down after a couple hours, though, but crops back up sometimes when you really don't want it.
I also really wish we could actually control the fights. I feel that this addition would provide a nice action break between the grindy-by-design life sim parts. I'm not complaining about that grind, it's a fun game loop and it pays off, but some variety would help here.
Overall, however, this game really works and I definitely recommend it.
As for the port: I played this most on PC, as that was the original (along with smartphones) and I wanted to compare the two. But the Switch port really holds up. Everything runs perfectly smoothly, and looks as you'd expect. The controller mappings feel natural after only a couple minutes. The only issue I have with the port is that, while the game runs on iOS and Android with touch controls, there's no support in the Switch version for the touch screen. The controls are great but some repetitive tasks like moving around on the map and selecting your skills in fights could be greatly improved and sped up by using the touch screen.
This is, however, a minor complaint. I may actually prefer the Switch port because this just feels like a curl-up-on-the-couch-with-a-handheld game to me. This is odd, because I don't prefer handheld gaming, but I recommend playing this one in handheld mode. It's the same controls either way but it feels more personal and engaging that way.
If you have a Switch and want a fun, low-pressure game to play to take a break from stomping goombas and gliding around Hyrule, this is a great game to have.

Well, jamesdickinson963, a modder working on an unofficial patch for the game, may have found a very simple answer. As it turns out, that seems to be caused by a typo in the game's settings file (PecanEngine.ini). The game shipped with an ini that had the word "tether" misspelled in a crucial line, and it seems that this prevented the enemy AI to change to new patrol locations even if it saw you, so they would keep running in their previous areas trying to find a way to you but couldn't.
Gearbox has released quite a few patches over the years to fix things, including a massive 5gb patch that cleaned up quite a few issues. But oddly, this was never addressed.
Fanatical currently has the game for $2.99 if you want to try it out for yourself.
Whomp, whomp. Sad, but I get why this happened. Mistakes like this get pushed out and seems like no one noticed when they were testing the game. Glad it was found, I wonder if Gearbox will issue a patch to fix it but at least if you know you can tweak it.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD by Linkus7 in 1:28:27 Linkus Wind Waker runs shows off just how crazy speedruns can get when the community finds amazing glitches. It's been recently found that if you pause buffer in Wind Waker that you can gain incredible swimming speed allowing you to swim to locations that previously required the boat. This allows runners to skip the first part of the game and other major parts making Wind Waker HD a run you can do in an hour and a half. If you watch anything watch Linkus setup the crazy pause buffering swim glitch then watch the rest because it's awesome.

It was beautiful to see him just sit there and wait for Mitch to catch up and opt not to use an item just so theyād be even. And maaaaaaaan he felt bad.
That kind of sportsmanship is great to see. But unsurprising. Everyone in the speedrun community seems to be awesome.

Wow that trailer was short and doesnāt give a lot but that style looks like a perfect mashup of the N64 Zelda style and the PSX Final Fantasy style. Mostly IX. I canāt even explain why it looks like that to me, but it does.
Iām stoked

Yeah it seems to be common for not-quite-free to play. You buy the game and the expansions but the monthly subscription is replaced with cosmetic microtransactions. Except for this one and Final Fantasy 11 and 14. The subscriptions seem to be working out for those.
