http://duckfeed.tv/woff/25 Since we have a few Podcasters on Cheerful Ghost I decided to spend a bit working on support embedding Podcasts into posts. Basically for any browser that supports HTML5 you can put the URL to your podcast mp3 and it will embed right in the post now. Most browsers support it and for the ones that don't we have the "Download podcast" fallback link.

What video games are you looking forward to in 2013? No table limit, send up as many as you are excited about.
Full disclosure, I don't know a ton about all the games that will be released in 2013 beyond a few. But those few I am very excited about like:
Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm, MewGenics and The Binding of Isaac 16 bit de-make. @Gary_Butterfield posted on the Watch out for Fireballs podcast page a question that I wanted to re sound here because I was interested in what everyone was thinking.

But also: Starbound. Imagine Terraria with multiple planets to explore.
Hmm...
Probably...
Sir You Are Being Hunted, Routine, Watch Dogs, The Witness, Among the Sleep, Last of Us, Spy Party (fucking FINALLY), Lifeless Planet, Mech Warrior Online (even though you can play it now, it's still technically only in beta),
I could probably do this all day. Those. We'll stick with that list for now.
I forgot about Sir You Are Being Hunted. That looks like such a blast.
Dark Souls 2, first and foremost, then the Edmund McMillen stuff.
Planetary Annihilation. Other than that, we'll have to wait and see.
Awesome, good list of things coming out for sure. Doom 4 might be a stretch but it would be awesome if iD could pull it off.
Perhaps some Fallout news soon?
http://i.imgur.com/DawSi.jpg
Ohhhh, that's good news. Hopefully they get someone good on Fallout 4.
I'm curious as to what that Fallout news actually means. Realistically I will play whatever Fallout game they put infront of me because I'm a huge Fallout fanboy. However I'd like a new, distinct and fresh location. So either they better have a good reason for him to be in this new location or we're back in DC, which I don't really want.
I have heard rumblings about Fallout Boston... Let me see...
Here is the bit:
http://cheerfulghost.com/jdodson/posts/483
@SignalWarden, I agree, DC was awesome but I am looking forward to some new awesome location.
I've heard today that it may be news about a movie, not a new game. Don't know how I feel about that.
To me, the writers are more important than the location. It's my favorite game world, I love it. I want to drink it up. But it needs better writing than Fallout 3, I think.
A movie? Interesting, not sure I am interested in that...
But, you know, I am watching In the Name of the King the Dungeon Siege Movie and its not terrible, just pretty bad. I mean, they used a good camera but the dialog is really sub par.
Haven't seen Burt Reynolds in a film in quite some time....
Keep in mind, I actually loved Fallout 3. I just like 1, 2 and New Vegas more. I'd watch a movie, hopefully it wouldn't be a Uwe Bowl nightmare.
I am going to save the majority of my Dungeon Siege Movie review for a later post(OH YES, PREPARE YOURSELF) but its not technically a nightmare if you dig camp and OH BOY this movie has camp. Unintentionally I am sure, but wow, its so... Laugh out loud funny at times and then at other times the visuals are stunning.
Oh and and I have planned to Dive into New Vegas this year, totally in my Steam queue and on my list.
I am torn between 3 and New Vegas. I think whichever one I'm playing is my favorite of the two. The factions and plot are better in New Vegas (far better) but the world of Fallout 3 is so incredible. If Obsidian had set up all the quests and plot and such, and then Bethesda built the world around it, it would be perfect.
I wish the world of Fallout 3 wasn't 60% subway tunnel. The other thing New Vegas has going for it is companions/characters. The companions in FO3 were trash. In New Vegas, each was an interesting character.
I did like exploring DC, however.
Fawkes in F3 was awesome. I loved his story and how overpowered he is. His story was one of the most compelling game elements to me in the last few years. It was awesome.
I really liked Dogmeat my only minor quip is that he was a dog and barked and growled all the time, that said loved having him in my party.
There has still been talk about the Fallout MMO but I don't think this is related. I would be really surprised if this info were related to a movie, simply because Erik Dellums wouldn't make sense to actually play Three Dog on film. There is also speculation that this game will take the Final Fantasy route and be Fallout 3 II and not Fallout 4, which would explain why it is back in DC, instead of a new location.
I could totally handle Fallout 3 II.
Fawkes was the only companion with any development in that game. Fawkes is neat but I actually don't like how overpowered he is. Compare, however, the bandit you meet in the first town with anyone from New Vegas. Actually, you haven't played New Vegas! Imagine 8 companions with as much depth and nuance as Fawkes, with the added benefit of quests attached to each of them that upgrade them.
The only issue with the companions in New Vegas was that so many of their quests were buggy. I loved it but never being able to upgrade Raul in multiple games was really disappointing. I think if Obsidian had another 4 or 5 months to iron out some issues it would have been so much better.
But yeah, each of the companions is awesome in his/her/it's own way, and the quest lines are complex and interesting. I also like that, unless you're playing on Hardcore, the companions are marked as essential so they just get knocked out rather than dying. And the companion wheel adds so much more control. I was annoyed with the functionality of the companions in Fallout 3 so I never used them. I never go without companions in New Vegas (except in Casinos since they can permanently delete companions' default weapons).
I rolled with Fawkes some, but opted out because of how OP he was. Dogmeat and I went through the whole game together but it was janky at times.
One thing that got me about Dogmeat, Rex, and every dog in Skyrim (yes, it's been a problem for that long) is that they ALWAYS stand in doorways. I once had to reload a save in Skyrim because of a stupid dog.
Yeah they do that. I think I did it mostly because I liked the company. The Capitol wasteland was pretty large and going into tunnels by myself wasn't awesome.
Ooooh shiny. I like what I'm hearing there.
Those are interesting world building bits but dialog/writing is still super important. I can imagine that being great but I can also imagine it being clumsy. I think about something like the PS2 spinoff Fallout game which was fine from a lore perspective but the writing was atrocious and it got disavowed quick.
SimCity is the first big game of 2013 for me. The multiplayer looks like it will be a blast and I have some friends that I think will get a lot of fun out of working on a region together.
SimCity does look really great. I still haven't made the leap to Origins yet but for this game I may very well.
Hadn't heard about the multi-player, that sounds really fun, co-op building would be fun.

I have the first n last.. Hopefully will be able to get the rest too =)
Interesting that FTL did so well. It's a good game but I sort of stopped hearing about it much.
I was talking to @WhiteboySlim last night as he was playing it. Seemed to make a big splash earlier in the year but might not have with the regular gaming press.
I have yet to get it myself, I am kind of holding back on adding many new games to my list. Its on my "games to get" list though :D
FTL is definitely on my list. It might have to wait for another couple of Steam Sales, though.
Yep, me too. Speaking of, I should put all the games I want on my Steam gift list. For that off chance Santa comes in July or whatnot.
A buddy of mine got me FTL for christmas, and I've sunk around 20 hours into it already. It's very good. I highly recommend it. :)
I am planning on hitting up the next PRGE and am working out a fun collab between Cheerful Ghost and Watch out for Fireballs. No promises, but if it works out, it could be fun. I hit up Portland Retro Gaming Expo 2012 this year and am still surprised to see these video retrospectives come out so far afterward. That said, this is a good video overview of the event as it was back in the summer.

Awesome
Yeah it is. I am considering making more so when I do ill let you know so you can pick one up!
That is so cute!

I got a Wii U. For the Wii U i got Nintendo Land. I played it for around 4 hours today.... I'm kinda obsessed with it.
That must be a really awesome person.
Also the big one I snagged was The Walking Dead. Looking forward to trying that out.
Dude! Awesome, looking forward to hearing your thoughts on that.
I picked up LA Noire. Looking forward to trying that out!
Awesome!
So far I only bought Resonance for like 2 dollars because I'm all kinds of poor at the moment. I really recommend it for any fan of classical point and click adventure games, it has good oldie looks, but the mechanics are a little different. :3 Primordia is also one I'm enjoying quite a lot, and it's made by Wadjet Eye Games also. <3

Just voted. This will be cool.
Yep.
Any guesses what will take the first prize bacon?
I guess I should be explicit it will be virtual bacon.
Unacceptable. We should insist on giving them real bacon.
I wouldn't be surprised with Borderlands 2. I think it's my favorite, though it's a tough call.
Imagine someone opening a package of shipped Bacon! Haha that would be awesome!
The walking dead needs some more votes!!! Its gotta be one of the top 5!
Share this out with all your friends, anyone is able to vote!
Jon, it seems to have outright rejected your gravatar change.
BR! You are right! Don't let Borderlands loot lottery take the Cheeries again!
Yeah, I'll re upload the image. Odd.
Borderlands, while there is a ton of loot, is way more than a loot lottery. Probably my favorite this year.
But I haven't played TWD.
Look forward to playing TWD myself.
This list could be retitled "Games I want to play but haven't yet." I think the only one on the list I've played is Borderlands 2. So many games, so little time!
I'm just being pithy. I really disliked Borderlands 1 but I haven't played the 2nd. I think the loot system in the first one is total bunko and the quests were boring, but the skill trees were pretty good.
What made the loot system bunk for you? I found it pretty fun.
The quests in BL2 are much better this time around for sure.
The loot system was the basic Diablo-style loot with a ton more possibilities. I love it. People call it an arrow-comparison simulator a lot, and I can kinda see their point, but weighing the pros and cons added a lot.
I dig its simplicity. The game play is the killer feature of Borderlands, that and how badass certain battles can be.
The story in the first game wasn't too compelling but in BL2 the characters and story were much better!
I agree with BR. The Walking Dead for GotY!
Though I must say, I'm surprised Mass Effect 3 isn't on the list. For all the criticism about the ending, it is still a really solid game.
I didn't make it on the list because it wasn't nominated.
My basic issue with Diablo style loot systems is this:
It speaks of shitty design to me. By stimulating the casino/gambling bit of the gamer mind and playing on our desire to watch numbers go up, you avoid actually designing your game. Item drops can be powerful rewards for exploration or, in the best of cases, they can recontextualize the rest of the game.
Consider doing a side quest to get a powerful weapon in an RPG. You're rewarded for going out of your way and seeing more of the game. The developers choose how powerful it should be comeasurate with the difficulty of the quest and can tie it in thematically. I'm on board.
Consider finding a new item in Super Metroid. When you get a new item, you reconsider every area you've already been to because you have a new mode of traversal or ability. That game is very well designed.
And then think about finding a random, more powerful bit of armor in something like Torchlight 2 (which I really liked, btw). Even rare loot is usually not a huge jump in effectiveness and even when it is, it's gated by level requirements. So the pleasure you get is that of watching numbers go up and very rarely of a new ability, like a status effect of some sort. Those status effects are usually already available, without the numbers going up, from shops and the like.
The rare loot you get is barely more empowering than the loot you already had. You're just trading a viable strategy for a very slightly more viable one, with higher numbers, brighter colors and cooler names. Very little actually changes. The fact that it's random means it more or less happens continuously throughout the game. Rare loot is not rare. Playing Torchlight 2, I was finding rare and magical loot constantly. On a given run, I'd find 2 or 3 unique pieces of equipment. When I would find something really exciting, level limits and class restrictions undermine the very thrill that they're hoping to create. Because of this, the effect is a constant marginal increase in your character efficacy, that isn't tied to your actions. That's Progressquest. If you're going to be random, have the courage to be random. Then, at least, it's like a slot machine and you feel like you can really hit the jackpot.
It's also annoying to constantly have to be picking up trash items to sell as the games basic economy. Specifically with Diablo (haven't played 3, just 1 and 2), the rhythms of the game are set by trips to and from the market. It's a game about selling junk you find on the floor. Sometimes you get a nice bit of equipment that is VERY rarely a big jump up, but it's not because of your performance or for exploration or for anything you actually DID.
Interesting points @Gary, thanks for bringing them up. I want to respond to a few though.
I do find gambling fun. Its a thrill to go to Las Vegas and put money down and occasionally win. I mostly lose but then again, I don't go to Vegas all the time and when I do I limit how much I spend and its not much. That said, its thrilling and much more adrenaline packed than the average video game for me. That said, its fleeting and not as rewarding as something like Fallout 3 or Super Metroid that will stick with me my entire life. My point is, gambling is fun, but its not as impactful or even possibly life changing as an awesome and compelling story for me.
Secondly I think that any kind of Diablo style RPG needs to do more than just bring the loot. For instance, I kind of thought by the end game of Diablo 3 thats really all it brought. The loot and grind. Whereas that does give you some mindless fun for a bit and does really give the game a huge amount of time for some, I find it lacking.
I think Diablo like RPG's survive for me not on the grind, which as you say is a bit like Progress Quest, but they need to bring a few more elements. Gameplay(which in my opinion Borderlands fucking nailed to the wall and owned), your character being a Badass and the overall feel of playing game. Borderlands 2 also brought much more interesting quests and a fun story. The side quests do give you a better gun or shields like you mention, which I do think is pretty awesome.
I also don't like games that make you go back to town to sell gear to advance, that shit is lame. D3 had that a bit, but it was lessened somewhat. In the end I don't mind the gambling aspect if the game can bring more fun elements to the table. I mean if I didn't id play online slots all day :D
That said, there is a slot machine pull in Borderlands 2 in Moxxi's bar that I use to "get rid" of my money because buying in game items seems useless to me. That is fun because its like opening a chest and I get some good gear that way.
Again, I'm basing all of my experience on Diablo 1 and 2, Torchlight 1 and 2 and Borderlands 1. It's possible Borderlands 2 is different. Does it have stat/class/level requirements to undercut you when you win the figurative slot machine? That shit drives me bonkers.
I also like a lot of these games, but it's in spite of the loot side. What these games do really well, I think, are skill trees. I love character customization, I just don't want to pick up a whole lot of Shoulders of the North which grant +.03 frost resistance along the way.
Also, random dungeons generally don't seem to add much. It's sort of neat that it's different every time but are the layouts ever considered? Designed? Neat? Most of the time in those games, there are a lot of dead ends with pottery in them.
It's not that I'm against randomization. Consider something like Binding of Isaac where each item you get is random. The difference is there are few, if any, insignificant upgrades. Each item is a meaningful improvement or, even better, drastically changes the way you play the game. Diablo-likes are literal seas of meaningless upgrades.
@Gary, occasionally you pick up an item that is a higher level that you can use.
In BL1 and BL2, I can count the times I got gear higher than my current level could handle on one hand. The general rule is that a level 37 piece won't drop from any enemies below level 37, so you should be getting gear along the lines of where you should be. Now, you CAN go take on higher level enemies and this would probably happen more often, but that's a recipe for repeated death.
And like Jon said, while I think the gear system is interesting, it isn't what makes me play the game. I don't care about the grind, I care about the gameplay, and they nailed it hard. The humor is great (thanks to the new writers headed up by Anthony Burch) and the quests are interesting. The gunplay mechanics work very well, and some of the pros and cons you get from the skill tree are fantastic for playing the game differently.
Interestingly enough, after getting through the main game and the two available DLCs, I started up playthrough 2 today. It levels up with you, so it's advised not to take any sidequests until you're 50, so that you can get the best loot from them for taking on raid bosses and such. Just blasting through the main quest is really quite fun, and I am rarely even worrying about loot unless it's something I want since, as Jon mentioned, money is no factor after maybe 6 or hours.
Voting is now closed thanks everybody!

If you want any other games on the list that were released in 2012, add the them to the commets!
I haven't played these but they probably should be included in the master list.
The Walking Dead
Mark of the Ninja
Natural Selection 2
Halo 4
Hitman Absolution
COD BLOPS 2
Pawn's Adventure
The Walking Dead is the only game on here that changed how I think of games. A lot has already been said about the narrative which is the focus and is top notch. But not enough has been said about the play.
TWD has the best "false gameplay" of any game I've ever played. The gameplay is almost entirely quick decisions and mild puzzles and the decisions are the draw. Not only do they have real consequence and do they masterfully manipulate tension by having timers, they are sometimes false. Sometimes, what you say doesn't matter. Sometimes, it doesn't matter how quick you are. Sometimes, the things you say have the opposite of the intended effect. Just like in life.
Further, there are some actual quick time events. Sometimes these are just button tap fests, but I want to talk about a very specific one that is very SPOILERY. So please STOP READING IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED IT BECAUSE I'M GOING TO SPOIL SOMETHING.
Seriously, spoilers.
Near the end, when you're strangling the guy in the hotel, you're prompted to slam on the Q button to do so. The prompt disappears. If you stop slamming Q at this point, he gets the upper hand and you're forced to take care of him another way. However, if you're like me, you're so emotionally invested in this character and what he's done and in protecting Clementine, you just keep slamming on the Q button as if you are actually choking the life out of someone. If you can't stop pressing the button until he's no longer a thread, he dies. DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE GAME ISN'T TELLING YOU TO. That moment alone makes this my game of the year. The fact that I cared enough to transcend mechanics and actual "game" signaled to me that this would be a game I'd never forget.
Runner up: Dishonored. Dishonored is a stealth game where it's fun to get caught. Think about that for a moment.
Cool, I skipped the spoiler part ill make sure Dishonored and Walking Dead are in the list to vote on :D
Oh and I was planning on getting The Walking Dead in its entirety in the next Steam sale.
Spec Ops: The Line.
I am going to look for a replacement color for the notification menu purple in the upper right for when you have outstanding notifications. There may be a few other things I fix over the next few days as well.
I hope you like the new design and let me know what you think of it! As you can now see, the new site design is now live! I have been at it for the last few weeks working on getting things just so and I am happy with the results.

Looks great on my Samsung Galaxy!
Great. I tested it a lot on Mobile! Well the iPhone I do t have an Android.
Dig it. With the design conforming to screen size, I have HUUUUGE youtube videos, but that's kinda cool.
Yep they take up the maximum width they can :D
If It is distracting I can dial it down some.
Mobile version works great. I love the new design. I'm using a galaxy s2 by the way.
Awesome, good to know thanks!
I love it as well. As I am using a laptop I don't normally use when browsing the site I can't determine if this is a new change or if this is this particular computers fault. I will confirm when I go home in a few days.
The issue is that the box you type in is incredibly small I can't read what i'm writing or what it looks like. Very hard to scroll as well.
Keep up the awesome work on the site though.
The comment box was quite small. I just increased it to a good height for mobile and desktop just now :D
I also make the Ghost in the header a bit larger as well as a few other tweaks here and there.
It's perfect thanks for fixing it.
No problem.
WoooHoo! Congratulations Jon, on such a fine site. Just so you know, I have it set as my homepage on my phone :)
Thanks @BR I am glad it works out in that way. I also have CG as a little icon on my phone home screen too :D
You did a good job and I'm glad to be here. If you need any help with it moving forward don't hesitate to ask.
Glad to have been a part of it. Thanks for bringing us together.
I'm really impressed how far the site has come in just one year. It's been a fun year, and it'll only get better!
Thanks guys, it has been fun hanging out with you all.
