I just recently found out that Blizzard is giving away the Hearthstone soundtrack for free. If you are interested in owning the music of the game, check out the link below.
All of Blizzard's soundtracks are great. I think the music adds to the appeal for me. Launching Diablo III for instance and hearing the epic music welcoming me just makes me want to play it more. It's just another facet of Blizzard's ability to make electronic crack.

Diablo III has had a pretty interesting journey from it's early design days to it's eventual reveal, launch, loot 2.0 and most recently with the Reaper of Souls expansion. As a fan of the original games I pre-ordered the Diablo III Collectors Edition and had high hopes for the game. I enjoyed the final released game but felt it didn't have quite a long tail that the original games seemed to have. When they released loot 2.0, a patch that fundamentally changed how the reward system worked, I was pleased as were many other people. If you wanted to know more about this process and the reasoning and history behind Blizzards early version of Diablo III to Reaper of Souls Josh Mosqueira had a great GDC talk about I suggest you check out.

I just found out that there's a "+100% bonus gold" and EXP event going on this week starting tomorrow to celebrate the Reaper of Souls birthday.
Diablo III is one of the best games of the decade, easily. The launch game was fun like you said, but they really listened to people's problems and ended up with a true marvel.

I enjoy it, perhaps more than I thought I would. Now that the Reaper of Souls birthday celebration is going on, it's the perfect time to play again. So, I started up a new character, a Demon Hunter. I think this bonus gold and EXP in-game event may even warrant a Cheerful Ghost event. =)

An event sounds like a great idea. The Demon Hunter was going to be the class I rolled when I started the game originally but then I heard about the Witch Doctor.
Setup an event, I might join you for some of it.

=) I'm glad you like it. I'll try, I haven't done one before, so it'll be my first.
I wasn't sure which class to choose for my new character, they all sound pretty cool. I guess ultimately, I just followed the list. I started with a Barbarian and also created a Crusader, so Demon Hunter was next on the list. I played for a while today and I think my new character is level 30, I also just finished the first Act.

I just found out that Diablo III is on sale for 50% off until 3/30/15 at 11:59PM (PDT). I thought I'd share that bit of news in case anyone here reads this post during the time of the sale. This reduces the game's price to just about $20, which is the same price as the Reaper of Souls expansion. I know I paid full price for both some time ago. I also upgraded to the Collector's Edition a few months ago.
I haven't watched the video linked in this post yet, but I may get to that tonight.

Blizzard Collectors Editions are awesome. So happy I picked up the CE's for the last few games they released I wanted to get. Can't wait to get the Legacy of the Void CE!

I haven't upgraded Heart of the Swarm, I still have the Standard Edition. I might upgrade it for Legacy of the Void, but I'm not sure. I upgraded Reaper of Souls to the CE, which I thought was beneficial due to the extra character slots. The perks of the Heart of the Swarm CE don't seem to be as important as the RoS CE upgrade.

That was a great video. It makes me glad that I picked up Diablo III and Reaper of Souls years after they were released. It's good to see that a company, such as Blizzard, learned from mistakes that were made and made a game much better.

BioShock Infinite finally released on Linux/SteamOS in time for for a massive 2K 10 Anniversary sale on Steam. 2K is offering up a 10th Anniversary Bundle for $49.99 that contains: Borderlands 2, Civ V, XCom, Bioshock Infinite, The Bureau, The Darkness II, Spec Ops: The Line, Mafia II, Duke Nukem Forever, Borderlands GOTY, BioShock 2, BioShock, Ace Patrol, Pacific Skies, Civilization IV, Civilization III, Sid Meier's Pirates & Sid Meier's Railroads. If you were looking to play any number of those games this might be worth checking out.
I downloaded BioShock Infinite on Linux and after updating my video card drivers I was able to play the game. BioShock Infinite plays similarly to Borderlands 2 in that it works well but doesn't quite perform as well as on Windows on the same rig with similar settings. The game is very playable and I imagine will work well on any Steam Machine you get. Nice to see more games getting ported and I wonder how long it takes until companies like Blizzard and... EA get on board?
Blizzard will be opening up the closed beta for Legacy of the Void starting on March 31st. They are adding some really bad-ass looking units starting with the Protoss Disruptor which looks totally over powered in the video. Blizzard is great at balancing so I imagine it won't be quite as destructive but if used properly? Blizzard also added the Cyclone a new unit to the Terrans which is a tank that locks on to an enemy unit and can fire while it moves. I can see the Cyclone being a very important part of Terran harassment in Legacy. Zerg multiplayer finally gets the Lurker back and Blizz added a new Ravager unit that can drop Protoss shields and attacks with a damage over time corrosive bile.
The video focuses primarily on the multiplayer updates but you can image how the new Protoss units may effect the single player campaign. Blizzard still hasn't talked about a release date so hopefully they talk about that at this years Blizzcon in November or sooner.
As I am a big Star Wars fan I am happy to report on some interesting news out of the new Star Wars-verse. Since the old Star Wars Universe was rebooted in favor of the new Star Wars Universe, Disney is pretty hip to release all manner of new stories that take us from the events of Return of the Jedi to the upcoming The Force Awakens. Today they dropped some news about an upcoming series I found pretty interesting.
"The second Death Star has been destroyed. Rumors are flying that the Emperor and his enforcer, Darth Vader, are dead. A new government is forming to replace the Empire. But the galaxy is a big place, and the fallout of this cataclysm will affect different worlds in different ways. Does everyone accept the fall of Imperial rule? Has everyone even heard the life-altering news? What rushes in to fill the vacuum the Empire has left? And who will try to stop them? Those are some of the themes we’ll be exploring in Aftermath, and as a lifelong Star Wars fan, just writing those words gives me chills. I can’t wait for our first canon glimpse into the state of the galaxy after the Battle of Endor."
Star Wars Aftermath drops September 9th and I am fairly certain I will pick it up on release. I've really enjoyed many Star Wars books including Timothy Zahns Thrawn trilogy as well as Star Wars Bounty Hunters and hope this is just as good.
Are you interested in filling in the backstory for the new Star Wars Universe up to the new film?
Oh, I'll definitely be grabbing it... So this book is supposed to be canon? The first non-movie canon material? I suppose they had the material for what took place after Ep6 and what is taking place in ep7 and they give all those guidelines to an author and say this is your before picture, this is your after picture, these things have to happen during this 30 years and these things can't happen.... go.
I've been stuck reading the Jedi Academy books, I think that's what they are called. I'm on the 2nd one. Just not keeping me engaged right now. So many Star Wars books to read. I hope it's all good, I just love Star Wars so much!
It's been a long time since I read any Star Wars books, but I might pick this one up. Especially in preparation for the new movie. :D
I guess technically the first non-movie cannon was the Rebels cartoon show. There's some new Star Wars comics out too, but I don't know if those are considered cannon.
Is clone wars considered canon still? This whole expanded universe thing is very confusing, lol. It came out before Disney bought all the Lucas properties. I suppose it could still be canon since it takes place between episodes II and III.
""On April 25, 2014, Lucasfilm and Disney revised the franchise's canon. They announced that the existing six films and The Clone Wars television series are the "immovable objects" of Star Wars storytelling. Previously published material has been relabeled under a "Legends" label, and future content will present a different vision of people, places and events after Return of the Jedi. They also announced that all future Star Wars stories will be connected, with guidance coming from the Star Wars story group. Additionally, it was announced that the films of the sequel trilogy will not follow the same story as that of the Expanded Universe works taking place after the events of Return of the Jedi.""
In this recent episode of Game/Show Jamin asks "Why can't Link be a girl?" And whereas that's not a bad question, i'd rather flip it to ask why Zelda can't be the hero of a game named after her? She seems capable and I bet Link could use a vacation. Jamin asks the question if people may be turned off by Link being a female and as I thought about it I imagine some would be. That said those people are more rare these days and getting a great Zelda game featuring Zelda or Femlink would be too interesting to avoid.
I was talking about this the other day with friends and one of them mentioned Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon as a game that features Zelda as the main character. I mentioned that terrible games shouldn't count for much AND that it wasn't made by Nintendo anyway. Not to say it doesn't officially count in the Zelda-verse cannon, I would just prefer a good game to come out of Zelda as the star.
What do you think, should Zelda or Femlink star in her own game or should we keep getting everyone favorite Kokiri?

I would support a female Link or a game where the player controls Zelda.
Jamin answered the question when he relayed that most males don't seem to care, as long as said female protagonist is in a good game. I wouldn't mind hearing a different story from the Zelda universe, maybe even from a completely new character. Give Link and Zelda both a rest.

If you love Portal 2 and by some chance missed the writers of Portal 2, Chet and Erik do a post mortem of Portal 2 at GDC I highly recommend you watch it. They cover the original designs of what Portal 2 was supposed to be and how it became the game we all love. They give some hints at some secret mechanics of a future Valve title called "F Stop."
YouTuber Andrew Colunga recently created a new series of FTL cartoon shorts called FTL Kestrel Adventures. They mix up some original pixel art and in game FTL game captures to propel the story. It's a bit of a mixture of Machinima and original art, which is really neat to watch.
Episodes 1 and 2 are available to watch right now. Episode one is linked above, you can watch episode two by clicking below.
Recently I completed the single player campaign for Starcraft 2 Heart of the Swarm again. When I was a young pup I used to replay games constantly. I'd speed run the original Mario Brothers (before I knew that was a thing) try and figure out how to complete the Legend of Zelda Link to the Past dark world dungeons in strange orders. When your video game library consisted of a handful of Super Nintendo and Nintendo titles, if you wanted to play games you played what you had. If I simply played games in Steam I haven't installed yet i'd be playing for years. Still, I love to head back and play games again. Last year I replayed Portal 2. I also reinstalled the original Dungeon Siege and really enjoyed the experience. Roller Coaster Tycoon was just as much fun as I remember playing years ago.
In age of seemingly infinite game libraries do you head back and replay titles or it always on to the new?
As an aside, here are a few titles I would love to replay this year. Romance of the Three Kingdoms 2, Portal 2 & Command and Conqueror Red Alert.
I do love to try new games, but, with Steam for example, I tend to pick up anything cheap that looks potentially good. The intent to play these "gems" at some point is there, but it isn't as strong as the want to fall back into something I love to play.

Back when I was in college, I used to play Final Fantasy VIII about once a year. There are a few other games, like Final Fantasy X, that I played more frequently as well. In more recent years, I haven't really done that very often. I did replay a few Zelda games a few years ago, though.
Since you mentioned Red Alert, after playing Red Alert 3 a few months ago, I was thinking of replaying the entire series, but didn't. I used to often play the original C&C when it came out.
Lately, I seem to be jumping around to different games.
I usually have very limited play time and it's just easier for me to sit down and replay Final Fantasy Tactics, or Mega Man X, or Earthbound or something because I already know how to play and I know pretty much exactly how much I can get done in a certain amount of time. As my kids are getting older though it's getting easier to play, so I've been playing more new-ish games.
I have a couple games I plan to reply this year, like Kotor2 (with the restored content mod!) and the Majora's mask 3DS reissue, which I just started today. And of course we just played through Kotor1 as our games club.
I have a few games on the replay circuit. The Portals and Half-Lives, The NES/SNES Mario games, Actraiser, most every id Software game, but yeah, replays are much more rare than they used to be.
"And of course we just played through Kotor1 as our games club."
Aw man, I'm late to the party on this Games Club thing! I could have used the extra motivation to sit down and finally play KOTOR. Even got an original xbox recently...haha
I find this age of the infinite library to be pretty overwhelming if I allow myself to think about it. The truth is, it's pretty near impossible for me to have all of the gaming experiences I would like to have in this lifetime. Even with the back catalog I've accumulated due to being an at-times-obsessive collector, I am well enough equipped to play great games non-stop for the next several years.
But then I remind myself to try to live in the moment, play whatever sounds most fun at the time, and just enjoy it. I've gotten an immense amount of pleasure from replaying Ocarina of Time with my fiance lately. Sometimes I'm aware of the fact that I could be spending that time on the GTAV campaign or finally starting Ni No Kuni, but it's still worth making time to replay the old favorites.

I agree. As a completionist I would really like to play many games on my list but it's just not possible. Like you I sort of play what grabs me enough to make it through. I've been trying not to play through too many games at the same time as that seems to make it worse and I don't finish much of anything.
I don't remember the last game I finished because I have so many games. I suppose games like FTL and DoTA2 I've "Finished," but haven't unlocked hardly anything still.
Some games that I think would be fun to replay again: 1080 Snowboarding Techmo Bowl Moonwalker (the arcade version) Final Fantasy II, III and VII GoldenEye NBA JAM Maniac Mansion The Oregon Trail Super Castlevania Contra III
These posts are great arguments in advocating shorter games. If the majority of games were the length of a Portal or Journey (and priced accordingly), it would be so much easier to cover a lot of ground, and still get that sense of satisfaction.

THIS to infinity. I think some games are WAY too long for myself, like Borderlands 2. That said many people love how long it is but I just kind of want it to be over. I just don't have the time for a 60 hour game and to get that kind of content games often make levels longer and add more fetch questing and the like. A real shining example of a game that was long but not too long was Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and Portal 2. All killer and no filler.
Some other short games that were fun: Little Inferno, Hotline Miami, Fez & Ittle Dew(the best not Zelda Zelda game i've played yet).

I find myself on the other side of the spectrum here. I pretty much always prefer longer games. I'm not sure how long I've felt like that, but I can definitely see it in different parts of my gaming past. For instance, when I was playing Command & Conquer, I enjoyed the length of the game. Also, when Travis introduced me to Final Fantasy VIII and I became obsessed with Final Fantasy, I then really started enjoying longer games. I enjoyed that I could easily get maybe 60-100 hours in a good Final Fantasy game.
As for shorter games, I've often found myself disappointed that they were so short. Even Final Fantasy is guilty of disappointing me with a short game such as Dirge of Cerebus. Also, Mario games usually only take a couple or few days to finish and I think I had one Harry Potter game that also disappointed me after I completed it in such a short time. Also, my only complaint about Grand Theft Auto V was that it was too short, although still a great game. Sometimes I like short games, it just depends on what I'm doing, what I want to do, the game itself, and how much time I have or want to put into it.

That makes sense Greg. I used to really love digging in to longer games like Neverwinter Nights and the Final Fantasy series too. Sometimes a longer game can hold my attention but that's really the exception these days and it's usually not a narrative driven game.
I feel like GTAV is pretty long, but then again I had to start over after my PS3 froze while saving and corrupted my save file. :P So I had to play through the first half of the game twice. It's kind of my fault for forgetting to save multiple save files.
I like long games. But I'm a freak. Short can be fun. And there is a place for them. I'm just into compelling story driven titles. I like immersive gameplay. And longer games do that better for me.
I like both, pretty equally. I want a game to be exactly as long as it needs to be. I think Portal 2 was about as long as it should have been, and so was Skyrim (though to be fair, can you ever really say Skyrim is completed?)
And then you have some games where there's no clear end, like Minecraft and Terraria. MMOs as well. Those work because they keep you engaged, and fail if they don't.
Basically, if the game engages you for 8 hours and finishes, it's just as good as a game that engages you for 100 hours and finishes.
There's certainly an argument to be made for total entertainment for your money. Is it more valuable to buy Skyrim for $60 when you get hundreds of hours out of it or Bioshock Infinite for $60 when you get about 12ish?
Honestly I don't want games to be put into that kind of equation. The question is whether the game experience is worth $60 to you. If you're satisfied, it did a good job, regardless of length.

I wonder how many hours I spent on GTAV. I could most definitely check some time. I just thought the story mode was kind of short, or at least I expected it to be longer.
Yeah, Skyrim, I don't know how many hours I spent on the PS3 version, but I've apparently played the PC version for 108 hours. That really surprises me because I thought I spent less time on it than I had on the PS3. To me, for a game like Skyrim (and Final Fantasy), that's really damn good!
Terraria on the other hand, says I've played for 375 hours, which is AMAZING! Yet, I'm sure some of you have probably spent more playing it. I'm really surprised by that number. I also know for sure it's going to jump much higher in June when 1.3 is released. I'm not sure how much time I spent with Minecraft.
I pretty much agree with you about the game experience and price, it's all up to the player.

Wow, that's quite impressive! 49 minutes Dota 2 141 hours Oblivion (I'm surprised, although I also played it on the PS3, though not sure how long even though I completed the game and the majority of the quests, so my PS3 hours are probably close to my PC hours.) 71 hours Fallout 3

Ultimately I agree with you Travis. If you love what you are playing then the cost is fine. With that, I have been spending less money on certain things than I used to because of the pretty high enjoyment I get out of video games and how much they cost. For instance, I used to go to the movies to the see the latest films. Over the last 5 years this has waned to only seeing a handful a films per year in the theater. When you add up the costs of tickets(because I bring my partner) and maybe buying some popcorn you can get to something close to $30 or more. Or I could buy the Star Wars Bundle for $15. In the end if you like what you spent money on then super, but I am getting to the point where I want to skip the theater entirely and just nab the Bluray or rent it.
So i'd say the money part is important but at the the end of the day if you love it, it was a good idea.
