I contributed to the Kickstarter for Broken Age and enjoyed the game quite a bit. It's hard to beat the OG Monkey Island, though, if that counts. If we're not counting Monkey Island games (as the first two are typically attributed Ron Gilbert), then I'd probably go with Grim Fandango or Full Throttle. I also quite enjoyed Brütal Legend and Costume Quest, though I definitely prefer the adventure game genre in general, so those won't beat out the others.

Grim is a game I sadly missed playing. I have it a lot of platforms but itās part of an unending backlog. If I were to come back to a classic adventure game I think Iād replay Throttle or Tentacle first.

One criticism I hear from a lot of folks that played Borderlands 3 is that the games twin antagonists are very annoying and drag the game down. This is an unfortunate thing to hear as, to date, the Borderlands franchise has created very compelling villains. All that to say, over the holidays I found the base Borderlands 3 on a good PC sale for $15 and I picked it up and I've played it a bit so far and haven't experienced the twin villains yet so I can't weigh in on that part but wanted to get a few thoughts out anyway.

Again, I'm quite early in playing Borderlands 3 on PC but I have a few bits to share and also wanted to get your thoughts on Borderlands 3 and what systems you've played it on. Firstly, Borderlands 3 feels like one of the most polished updates to a base game I've played in a long time. Right now, the game shines because of how many little things it updates making the core mechanics feel effortless and fun. I'm not saying it's an easy game, I've died a handful of times, but even so it's not punishing or frustrating it's just Borderlands but that much more fun.
I'd also say tonally it feels like it's heading back to the tone of the original Borderlands, but again, i'm still early days with the game which is why I'd love to get some more thoughts from everyone else.
I really enjoy that I come late to certain games, meaning I can pick them up for a very fun price but historically I've waited to pull the trigger when the base game + major DLC is super cheap as well. That said, I frankly never get to the sea of DLC and barely have enough time for the game itself so I've realized that if I want more, I can come back and get it so might as well just pick up the base game now. By the time I complete it it will be 2052 and I imagine all the DLC won't be hard to come by.

Is New Super Mario Bros. Obsolete Now?
We live in a hyped social media and hot take first world where the opinions that make it to the top aren't always the best but the most controversial. I suppose it's hard to say what opinions are "best" but we are all driven to serve up our takes as fast as possible and that doesn't always mean things are well considered. Take for example the extremely hot take that SUPER MARIO MAKER 2 MAKES SIDE SCROLLING MARIO OBSOLETE or at least future side scrolling Mario or something? Where as this thought isn't owned by all it seems popular enough and it's not entirely wrong as it's based on some truth but comes to a needless conclusion.
Is Super Mario Maker 2 really good. Hell yep. Are the Nintendo created single player stages contained within Super Mario Maker 2 _VERY_ unique, fun and refreshing? Oh yeah. Are the top of the crop player created levels a breath of fresh air and the inclusion of the Mario World mode that allows you to thread levels together in a pack a Godsend? Yeah it is but all of that being true doesn't mean that a more traditional side scrolling Mario is dead or need not exist.
I appreciate that I played a lot of Super Mario Maker 2 before New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe because I appreciate them both for what they are and it's not at the exclusion of the other. New games that do something unique or even better than games of the past doesn't need to invalidate the past game, it just means we have more good things. I think one aspect of hot take culture is that it likes to dish on the past because saying "old thing bad" is a fun angle. It's often reductionist and simplistic but it's also a lot of fun as being cynical often is.
Thanks For Whatever That Was, Can We Talk About The Game Now?
Sure! We can yadda, yadda our way to the crux of my thoughts on New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe on Switch which is "if you enjoy classic Mario side scrolling and want more of that, get this game." Frankly I'm not sure a lot of people really love that formula save for a very focused audience which I am very much part of.
I'd say New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe feels more like a sequel to the Wii version but improves it in a very helpful way. I think the biggest flaw of Super Mario Bros. Wii wasn't that it was challenging but alongside that made the worlds too long. I'm not sure what the proper amount of stages for a Super Mario World zone is but New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe nails it. I found myself VERY annoyed when you'd beat a Koopa Kid boss and they'd rally to the "real castle" and you'd have another half of the World to go. Felt way too tedious and is why I haven't completed the Wii version yet. (I plan to but the Wii game feels like a chore where the rest of the games in the series really don't)
My Thoughts On The Characters in NSMBUD
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe adds Toadette and Nabbit and that was fairly contentious for a few fans that lamented you _HAD_ to select one of the "easy" characters if you played 4 player co-op. This critique is valid and there is no way to play 4 player co-op I know of with Blue toad meaning you _HAVE_ to pick Toadette or Nabbit and I also don't care. If I was playing couch co-op with hardcore New Super Mario Bros. players and someone had to fall on the sword of an easy character I'd do it. I'm not sure it would be a hard sword to fall on because Toadette is a fun character to play as and Peachette is kick ass even if she is a form of easy mode. From time to time I play as Toadette in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe and don't care I might miss some secret Mario street cred as she's a fun addition and I love the small changes they make to how she plays.
The Way Things Are Headed
Playing New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe on Switch is a joy and at the moment I'm slowly unlocking all the secret exits for fun. At the rate I'm going I plan on completing each level in the base game. I don't care to collect each levels star coins, but who knows, I may end up doing it. I've never really been a game competitionist but somehow in New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe it just feels like the right way to play it.
As much as we give George a hard time about writing the prequel trilogy, he has some really good thoughts on The Force, and life in general.
I don't have much to add to what he says in this video; I just recommend watching!

I respect George a lot and hope he's more involved with Star Wars moving forward. With that, I find his ideas of the force and the jedi are hard to relate to. To focus on the dark side and light side as selfless VS selfish to be good but somewhat hard to approximate because I really don't think wanting things is ultimately bad. I find the black and white thinking of the Jedi in the prequels to be very off putting, dangerous and one of the hardest parts of organized religion. You take good things, like being selfless and putting others ahead of yourself and translate that to certain actions and dogma which are entirely wrong.
It's not bad to be afraid your Mom is a slave on Tatooine. It's not inherently evil to be scared. It doesn't make you space Hitler to have a dream where your wife dies and that shakes you. It just makes you human. Fear doesn't mean you have an evil heart. The Mandalorian as seen with a certain character seems to espouse this too, in that baby Yoda is afraid therefore scary because he might be evil. I don't really think fear means much more than we contain human emotions and those emotions come up. I don't think the most evolved form of humanity is the abandonment of emotion I think it's accepting what we are and making good choices anyway. When the Jedi distance themselves from hard emotions they give more power to them because accepting our humanity is the best path to disarming out unfortunate tendencies. The worst strategy is to hype up "bad thought" and try to pray it away or whatever the heck the Jedi do.
I appreciate Star Wars a lot but when you boil down religion and attempt to organize it and make a creed of it I think things tend to get hard which is why I frankly have a hard time with the Jedi. If they existed in our world, I'd try and get as close to their power and abandon the core mindset and if that made me a Sith then so be it.... Jedi.
I think Lucas is saying it's more than black and white. There needs to be balance to the light and dark side. It's not a good thing to be fully selfless, as then you will never look out for yourself, and at the most extreme would end up quickly dead, as you'd be giving up everything of yourself for others. Also, being selfish is important, for the same exact reasons. There needs to be balance, not a domination of Jedi or Sith.

There is no way Rian Johnson is making another Star Wars movie with the amount of hate his movie (rightfully) received. I appriciate that he tried something new, but it was just a terrible movie.
Hopefully a strategy is to outlive the reaction to his work. š¤£
Seriously though, this is great news. With The Mandalorian and the other shows coming Star Wars fans should be sated with content enough to ignore a new trilogy from a Directors style they donāt like.
Watched a very short video by John Riggs where he explains how to unlock small Fire Mario and I decided to share here for folks that don't know about this old glitch.
From the glitch topia wiki:
* Be Big Mario or Fire Mario and go to a Castle level (World 3 Castle recommended). * Try to touch the Axe and get hit by Bowser at the same time. * When you are in the next level you will be big. Collect a Mushroom and you will turn small. * Now collect a Fire Flower and you will be transformed into Small Fire Mario/Luigi.

I got the Mario 35th Anniversary Game and Watch which is way more fun than I thought it would be. I got Tenet a bit before the holidays and have watched it a few times including all the special features. One thing I'm looking forward to releasing in 2021... well it's two things. Firstly I am really interested to hear about news of any future Mystery Science Theater 3000 seasons. Secondly the Hero Quest remake shipping! It's strange because we can't do a lot of table top gaming now but I have high hopes for 2021.

I got a Playstation shirt. Then, I picked up some winter sale deals; DLC for Jurassic World Evolution, Conan Exiles, and Civ6. Got the Heretic/Hexen group along w/ Wolfenstein: Spirit of Destiny ( I never played it). I also got Wolfenstein Youngblood.

LOL I went to Epic Games just now and saw that. I was surprised and thought about posting it here, but luckily you already did. Now have have 2 copies of it! LOL All these Epic Games I own and I still haven't even installed the launcher. LOL Anyway, I've been playing JWE a lot lately! It feels easier than when I first started playing it. I thought that the dino packs I bought would help as I often had a hard time deciding which dinos to incubate w/ others. Right now I'm on the last DLC, Return to Jurassic Park. I'm glad I decided to replay it, I think it's a fantastic game!
First thing I'm looking forward to is binge watching Season 3 of Cobra Kai! Then I'm looking forward to WandaVision and the other Marvel shows on Disney+.
Hopefully the movies that were announced to be on HBO Max next year actually will be, so I can see Dune, Matrix 4, and others from my couch!

Just spitballing ways to fix the problem with scalpers and bots when it comes to buying consoles, what if sales were no longer online, but in person only? You'd still have to probably wait in line to score one, but if the inventory went just to stores, there'd be less scalpers getting them.
Of course, Amazon would never let that happen lol.
What if, you could buy a maximum of 1 online, but you couldn't have it shipped to yourself, you'd still have to pick it up from a store? I don't know how many Amazon stores there are around the country, but maybe they could partner up with local stores?
Neither of these are perfect ideas, just brainstorming :)
One nice part of only allowing consoles to be purchased from a store is that anyone could get in line. But I wonder if scalpers would just hire folks to stand in line like they did with iPhones?
Here's a quick question for ya: What kind of keyboard do you prefer and why? Mechanical (clicky), membrane (soft), or hybrid (both)? This year, I've gotten to know the difference between the two (I'll explain below). I kind of think I like the membrane (my Cynosa) more than my mechanical/hybrid (my Ornata). I think it has something to do w/ response time and being able to have a definite, hard feel of pressing a key, being sure that you press it. Since I'm not sure of this preference, perhaps someone here could fill me in, especially if it's there preference. So let me know in the comments! Also, be sure to let me know what your favorite brand of keyboards is! Thanks for sharing!!!
Until this year I'm not sure I knew there were different kinds of keyboards, I thought they all were the same. I was wrong. When Re-Logic announced Chroma support for Terraria 1.4, and I realized what that is, I just had to have one of these keyboards. I don't know how I lived w/out a keyboard w/ keys that light up. I often play in the dark and even though I'm really good at typing, there are some keys I'm less familiar w/ and thus more likely to hit the wrong key. So, I went out and bought a Razer Cynosa Chroma (membrane) and absolutely loved it!!!! Unfortunately, I spilled soda on it this year and even though all the keys seem to be functioning, it still feels bad, so I decided to buy a replacement. I went to Wal-Mart looking for another Cynosa, but instead found a mechanical (hybrid I believe) Razer Ornata Chroma. That's pretty much when I learned the difference between the two and I was disappointed, because I loved that Cynosa so very much. However, a few months or so after getting the Ornata, the "N" key started sticking, as in it wouldn't pop back up after I pressed it. Then another key started doing the same. In the end, I did an RMA w/ Razer. I had to send them the Ornata before they would send me a replacement. I felt like I couldn't go w/out a Chroma keyboard, so I bought a Razer Cynosa V2 Chroma from Amazon. The only problem I've noticed is that the Space Bar sometimes squeaks (I can hear it now as I type). I find this to be a minor annoyance and I've noticed others reporting the same issue (perhaps w/ a different key). I decided I could live w/ it. The replacement Ornata finally came and I switched back to it. Then, I decided to see if there was a simple solution to the squeaky Space Bar on my Cynosa V2. Razer doesn't want end users to remove keys unless their keyboard came w/ a key remover. However from what I've seen on YouTube, it seems easy and safe enough to do, but I dare not do it as I don't want to chance voiding my warranty. So, I reached out to Razer and they decided (automatically) to go through the RMA process. This process starts w/ them deciding whether or not they'll replace it. Unfortunately, they deemed my squeaky Space Bar as damage caused by me, which is absolutely wrong. This Space Bar has been squeaking ever since I started typing on it. Sure, I could have possibly gotten Amazon to replace it or whatever, but again I didn't deem it worthy enough of going through all that trouble. Unfortunately, the replacement Ornata they sent me started doing the same thing a couple of months after I got it, the Back Space key started sticking. This behavior is definitely unacceptable, so I started the RMA process (again). They've decided to replace the keyboard (again). How many keyboards must I go through to get one that isn't faulty or doesn't fail within a few months of using it? Maybe this is a Razer thing, I don't know. I still like Razer, it's hard not to like these keyboards. I know there are others similar. Some are extremely cheap, while some are even more expensive than the Ornata. I believe Razer has one or two models that are more expensive.
Promoting to main as this is a pretty cool question and relevant to a lot of gamers.
My preference is for an ergonomic keyboard with a fair amount of travel. I donāt care too much about click noises, just that my wrists are sitting in a good spot for blood flow to avoid issues. Historically the ergonomic keyboard Iāve used the most is the usb Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard. The original run was built well and I had for about 8 years until I spilled coffee on it. I tried buying the same USB model but newer and it literally never worked and I had to return many. I ended up moving to the new Microsoft Sculp Keyboard and Mouse combo which is a nice wireless redesign of the classic model.
Since I love the original Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard so much Iāve found two at various used shops in town so Iāll always have a couple on file if I want to go back.
I don't care about whether it's clicky, in fact I get the quieter Cherry MX Brown switches. But there's just no replacing the efficiency and response of a mech keyboard.
I have a WASD brand mech keyboard for my main driver PC which has been in heavy use for about 5 years and still feels like the day I unboxed it. So when I went to work writing code, I bought another mech keyboard for my office. I honestly can't remember the brand and I've only been into the office about 4 times since March-- yay Covid!
And I have a Razer Blackwidow Elite mech keyboard for my gaming rig that I bought about three months ago to replace an old Logitech membrane gaming keyboard. To its credit, it still worked fine for the most part, but the volume knob on the keyboard started wigging out and changing volume whenever it felt like it. Like you mentioned Greg, I decided to go with Razer mostly because of the Terraria Chroma support ;)
I decided a few years ago that if it ever went out I'd definitely replace it with a mech, and I only wish I'd done so sooner. It feels so much snappier.
I have no experience with the hybrid and I'm honestly not sure how that could work-- how it could be both mechanical and membrane. But I haven't dug into it much.
(to be more clear about a point in that last comment-- the older Logitech keyboard was the one that had a failing volume knob)
Also Greg you may remember me using an absolutely ancient and loud-as-hell IBM keyboard when we lived together. Forget N-key rollover, that thing would freak out if you pressed more than 3 at a time. I was into mechanical keyboards before it was cool :D

Wow! Thank you for promoting this to main and replying!
Jon, so what kind of keys do you prefer, mechanical or membrane? As it comes to the mouse, I have a cool Corsair that lights up, you can change it's color, too. A year or two, I started getting a callus on my right hand and realized I had to get a mouse pad w/ wrist support, which resolved my issue. I now have a beautiful mouse pad (w/ wrist support) that has the image of Van Gogh's Starry Night painting, it's beautiful!
Travis, The Blackwidow is at least one of the keyboards I was thinking when I mentioned in my post that even some Razer models are more expensive than the Ornata I bought. For some details, including the hybrid stuff, here's a link to Razer's site on the Ornata: https://www.razer.com/gaming-keyboards/razer-ornata-chroma/RZ03-02040100-R3M1 At first, I didn't like the "clicky" sound of it, though Vinny did. I think I got used to it though. I feel like the efficiency and response of each type was too similar to notice a difference.
Like Jon, one of the things I like about the Ornata is the wrist support, though I can live w/out it. My wrists are usually kind of hanging off the edge of the keyboard and desk anyway. One thing I like about it, too, is that the lights for things like Num Lock and Scroll lock aren't just little dots, but they show you what's active. So, the Num Lock notification light is in the shape of a "1," while the one for Scroll Lock in the shape of an "S," so you don't have to guess which is active. Even though the Cynosa V2 doesn't have this, it has a cool set of media controls above the numpad. I can change the volume, even mute it, or do so some skipping, it seems. The Ornata has this functionality, but you need to press the Function key "Fn" along w/ an F# key. I haven't really looked into details regarding Razer's other models, so I don't know much about them. Maybe the Cynosa was the only Razer keyboard in Wal-Mart and that's why I got it, but the Ornata was the only one there after I had to replace the Cynosa. As for the Cynosa V2, I decided I loved the original so much I'd check out this one and see what the difference was.
As for why I went w/ Razer, well it started when I decided to go to Wal-Mart and buy a gaming headset years ago. I don't know why, but I chose Razer for the first time and I really loved it. Now that it's been used a bit, it's a little bit fussy, sometimes cutting me off, causing me to restart the game I'm using it in or adjusting the wire or USB connection.
Oh, and Travis, I remember the old keyboard I had back then. It wasn't even a PS/2 keyboard, it was some kind of fat plug (maybe serial?). I'm not sure what happened to it or that PC, but that was the first PC I built.

That's what I'd like to know, what's so special about the click? I kind of think I prefer membrane, because it's more quiet and feels softer. However, since I've now experienced both types this year, I could do either as well, so long as my keys are backlit and functional.

Nothing special for me, I just like the sound of it.
> Jon, so what kind of keys do you prefer, mechanical or membrane?
I'm not sure I care much more than if it has a good feel and isn't too loud. I think the only times I had a mechanical keyboard were back in the day when all computers had them. I think now days membrane is the norm unless you get something clicky on purpose.
> Like Jon, one of the things I like about the Ornata is the wrist support, though I can live w/out it. My wrists are usually kind of hanging off the edge of the keyboard and desk anyway.
Makes sense. I've had blood circulation issues and when I get a raised keyboard that's ergonomic I haven't.
I finally got around to watching this. I enjoyed learning about what into the various games he's worked (of which I've played several).
