File this under "first world problems" but I have a ton of video games. Oh wait, Cheerful Ghost to the rescue, how many games do I have? According to my handy dandy games list... http://cheerfulghost.com/jdodson/games I have 242 games. That's quite a lot of games. Now some of those are on my old NES and I don't really pull those out too often. But many of those are PC or PS3 games and lately I have noticed that if I stopped buying games I wouldn't be done with what I have for months. I have enough content to possibly keep me busy well into the next year.

Wondering that with Steam and as many Free to Play titles that exist if we will all will be perpetually swimming in... Read All

Final Fantasy 12 (lost my save somewhere along the way, gotta start over)

Fallout 3 (still playing off and on)
Borderlands (need to finish DLC)
Borderlands 2 I'm currently playing
Lone Survivor (awesome but scary! I think I'll play this around Halloween time :D)

I'm sure there's more I'm missing, but those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head. Yeah, I have SO many games to get caught up on. It's almost as bad as how many books I have sitting on my bookshelf waiting to be read. There's just not enough hours in the day to do everything I need to and everything I want to!

There are a few games that I haven't completed recently, but most the time I finish games that I enjoy to play. I guess I only finish games that I enjoy the story of such as:

Fallout 3: beat it 3 to 4 times
Fallout New Vegas: 3 to 4 as well
Oblivion: beat this once but logged about 400-500 hours in it
Skyrim: Only beat this once
Mass effect 1: 2 play-throughs
Mass effect 2: 3 play-throughs
Mass effect 3: 1 play-through but I'm going to star another soon with all the new dlc

So I guess my conclusion is that I will play entirely through a game that I really enjoy(multiple times) such as mass effect, which its story is by far my #1.

There are also games which I haven't beat yet, but that is due to something I enjoy more coming along and pushing it aside. Some of these games are:

Dead Island
Magicka
Titan quest

These are games I don't enjoy as much as others and therefore usually I stop playing them and instead play a more enjoyable game to me.

I guess that about sums it up.

Yeah, I did play as an evil and good character. Although I have played with similar characters through the story. There wasn't many different ways you could go in fallout 3. Fallout New Vegas on the other hand had tons of different endings depending on which faction you chose to follow.

@jdodson: It's the PS2 version, and I've had it for a long time. I sunk a ton of hours into it but the game is HUGE and after while I just started playing other stuff and never came back to it.

I still have just one character on Fallout 3, and I'm a "good" guy for the most part. :) If I ever do get around to playing a second time I'll probably go the evil route. I played through the first Knights of the Old Republic game several times and did both good and evil characters. Playing evil characters is fun at first, but after awhile I start to feel bad lol.

I agree. Doing the bad thing leaves me with a strange feeling. I imagine the second play through it would be better considering I had chosen the right path I know what the end run of that is.

Do you trust your game developers? Do you feel that the game they are pitching to you is as good as they say? With a games goes from concept to alpha then beta and if we are lucky enough to release are you satisfied with the game that they made for you?

I am an MMO player. I started with World of Warcraft since the original level 60 cap. I followed Star Wars since the idea and the concept art shown at a convention. With anticipation I saw the rise and fall of 38 Studios. Then I found some games that are great in their form that do not get a lot of attention. The Beta killed it for me. Then I found Dungeons and Dragons Online (DDO) by accident. It is made by Turbine and I think this games concept is amazing and fun to play but it is slightly outdated and because it is Turbine Lord of the Rings Online is because of this game. Give me a hobbit and DDO and we have two games that are ok.

This is just the surface of MMO’s I know that. But when you get all hyped up and the game you are sitting in front of dose not play to the buildup do you feel cheated in anyway. I think the future of MMO’s is free to play. That model is working very well. Starwars is moving there and that leads me to ask “Why was it not free to play since launch?” I felt very taken with Starwars. I did not play beta much. I wanted the game to be fresh but at level 28 I felt the nails of the grind. I know that is a concept of an MMO but why can developers nail it and other fall so short? Blizzard for the most part has changed the game style of their game and the current expansion Cataclysm (until the 25th) changed everything that was of the grind play style. The WOW player base is huge and with that I feel Blizzard can gauge their game and develop in a way that no one else can. This is all a guess but if the entire MMO player base is 15 million and Blizzard has 10 of those that leaves a 5 million player base to be divided up. I do not feel that games can have proper feedback unless you make every game a spin off WOW. My numbers might be off but it makes since. So when you have developers pitching and pitching ideas to the same player base how do you not get numb as a player? How do you believe and share that vision that this MMO will blow your mind and be everything you want an MMO to be.

These are my thoughts, what do you think? I think MMO’s might be going out of style fast unless they bring a new concept to the table. Can they?

I actually can comment on this. I have been in this beta for well over a year now. I play it from time to time to see how its getting better.

(I played more often towards the start but every huge update moves your older characters to an un-updated server)

The currency system is a godsend for f2p games and almost every f2p game should try to adopt this model. There is zero gold and the currency (real money) items are easily and frequently found throughout the game theyve even been generous enough to increase the drops a few times in the updates. It operates soley on trading.

Diablo 3 did the complete opposite; some of you may have differing opinions but integrating gold farming into the core mechanics of your economy IS TERRIBLE. PoE tries to weed it out completely.

The sheer amount of updates it pumps out I think is a testament to how hard their working on it and will continue to work on it after release. It can only get better. If you do happen to run into a beta key this is one you want to keep and eye on. This is how isometric rpgs should be.

So I've decided to start up a discussion on all games japanese related. This is not to comment about anime or manga or characters. Just games. Talk about your favorite japanese games. Your games you were saddest never made it over seas. Or ones that are rare and that you'd Recommend.

I'll start with a few of my favorite series:
Super Robot Wars SRPG
Soma Bringer ARPG
Seiken Densetsu 3 ARPG (Secret/Legend of Mana 3 for you non japanese literate)
"Tales of" games and their offshoots. A/RPG hybrid

Honorable mention:
Uncharted Waters series (it really only remained popular in asia and still today is one of the best sea faring series of all time)

I'll comment on Uncharted Waters and few other games after what first came to mind after you mentioned Japanese games.

It's funny because Japanese games for so long in my early gaming life dictated how I viewed what games were. And you know, it might seem strange but ill list of some badass Japanese games:

Super Mario Brothers
The Legend of Zelda
Donkey Kong
Final Fantasy
Romance of the Three Kingdoms

So really, Japanese games ruled gaming and my life for damn near half of it. I got into programming because of games and dreaming about one day making them.

Anyways, kind of got all wild eyed and sentimental for a minute there, anyways.. :D

I played Le Emperor and rented Uncharted Waters on the Super Nintendo. I really like Uncharted Waters, the ship trading, upgrading the ship and traveling around the wold. It was a really fun idea I haven't had as much fun with in a modern game like it(I guess Sid Meyers Pirates is sort of similar?).

Koei still makes stuff and they released a version of Romance of the Three Kingdoms on the iPhone, one of these days ill break down and get it but I don't want every second of the day spend playing it so.... It waits, un-purchased. :D

I never played too many of the japanese ones. Seiken Densetsu had a spot on my emulator for a while, and I quite enjoyed it. Dragon Force on the Saturn (woah, that brings me back) was quite a good time, and most certainly very Japanese. I've always wanted to pick up the translation of shining force III... but other than that I've been pretty western.

Romancing Saga is a completely different game but also unbelievably amazing. Pirates! that most people are familiar with is nowhere close to as good as uncharted new horizons was. Sorry pirates! fans out there.

Here's a game (series really) that might not get mentioned so I feel I should: Katamari Damacy. These games are so addictive. The mechanics are so simple, you pick up smaller objects so that you grow and can pick up larger and larger ones. You start of picking up thumbtacks and end up rolling up entire galaxies!

Insanely fun, insanely addictive, and insanely frustrating. The new one released on the Vita is quite literally the only thing that makes me want to buy a Vita.

Uncharted waters was awesome! I actually picked up Pirates! because it looked like an updated uncharted waters.

As far as games that didn't make it stateside, Seiken Densetsu 3 and Mother 3 were my two big ones. Luckily they both were fan translated. :) I also just picked up a fan translated version of Brigandine Grand Edition which I haven't tried yet but I'm excited about. I've heard Bahamut's lagoon was a good SNES RPG that never made it stateside, but I've never seen or played it.

The game is absolutely insane in just about every way. There are so many different ways to improve your characters and make them more powerful that I had to kind of force myself to stop working on leveling them up and actually go do the main storyline at one point. The game is also genuinely funny. My wife liked it when I would play the game when she was around because she enjoyed the cut scenes so much.

And of course my childhood was ruled by Japanese video games: Zelda, Mario, The Final Fantasy series, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Mega Man, Metroid, etc. :)

@Jdodson you should check out one of the steam greenlight games called secret of grindea. looks like kind of a funny name based on the sterotypes of ARPGs however it basically looks like a revamped and newer version of something like secret of mana but it has 4player co op

@Whiteboy I remember buying both Disgaea and La Puccell Tactics together on ebay when it was like impossible to find for ps2. They were so expensive. This was before the DS and PSP remake. Nippon Ichi really is a savoir of old-school styled SRPG's

Also bahamut lagoon is pretty cool and worth playing. Its a rather typical SRPG except you have dragons that you can feed and depending on what you give them they get different stats and evolve in different ways.

Also can't believe I didn't mention Lufia II. Lufia II is probobly one of my greatest games from my childhood or of all time. Anyone else played and beaten it?

I've never beaten it, but I have played Lufia II. That's another great game! I should go back and finally beat that one. :) I think the farthest I ever got was I the tower that randomly generated new floors. I don't know how far into the game that is though.

the Wii version is what i started on. I loved the game immensely. It's a bit old now but its still the last monster hunter we've ever received in the US. It is challenging as heck though. If your not ready to spend some time trying to learn a weapon style and get pretty darn good at it; it's probably not worth it.

However, If your looking for a game with challenge amazing animation and some of the best group play out there. I'd say it's amazing and a definate must own.

I think one of the best "secret" horror games is on the gamecube. Eternal Darkness. Believe that was it. You have sanity and as you get scared more and more your guy literally starts to look creepy as hell and you start hearing things. Look it up.

One of the interesting new things I checked out at PAX was the Wii U. I watched someone play a game where they explored/sniped with the new Wii U tablet controller. I took a quick picture of him giving it a go:

I was interested in talking to someone from Nintendo about the Wii U to ask a few questions. A Nintendo rep asked if I wanted to play a game and I said I wanted to take a picture of the "normal" controller without a screen on it. He said that I couldn't but he could "clarify things" for me. I said ok and asked him...

Maybe it's just me, but nothing I've seen about the WiiU is really all that exciting. I'm curious about the tablet controller, but if it turns out to be as gimmicky* as the Wii's motion controls have been, I dunno how this new console will do. Did you have a chance to play any of the games with the new controller?

*Just to clarify, it's not that I think the motion controls suck in general, it's that they're largely poorly implemented. Also, some games just don't benefit (and many are actually hindered) by motion controls.

I didn't get my hands on the controller because, I wasn't really interested in playing with it. I was more interested in watching others use it and talk to the Nintendo reps.

I think the Wii Motion controls are fine for what they do, Bowling is fun. But when I hit the couch for a shooter, I kind of don't want to flail around. That said, Zelda with more arm movements could be awesome, but I reserve judgement until I try it more.

Oh and I did the Twilight Princess thing, the controls were fine by me, the water temple sort of caused me to walk away.

Some games pulled the motion controls off really, really well. My main complaint is that that didn't happen often enough. What's worse, motion controls were shoehorned into some games that really didn't need it. Wii Sports and (especially) Wii Sports resort are awesome, and some of the few Wii games I still play once in awhile. Twilight princess was fine except I found some of the special sword techniques a little hard to pull off with the motion controls. I haven't tried Skyward sword yet, but I hear it is much better control wise.

I have a ton of free PAX Beta keys and Free DLC to give-away to all you awesome people. Apparently some of this PAX exclusive stuff is on Ebay selling for real cash money. Like the Doom 3 BFG Edition Pink Avatar I nabbed from the iD booth is selling for $10. Since I love you all so much, they will be free to you all.
