The loot started to suck, I didn't enjoy having to relive the story over and over and the game wasn't that challenging. My interest died off but I would occasionally come back to SnuggyBunny to dispatch evil.
When the loot 2.0 patch hit what little I played I loved. Diablo III was fun again and I was getting some really amazing gear. Many of my friends came back to the game and we were enjoying playing it together. A bit after loot 2.0 hit I decided to stop playing until Reaper of Souls was released so I could bottle up the excitement I had for the game. I am happy I did that because...
Reaper of Souls is an great expansion to Diablo III.
The Tale of Westmarch
Reaper of Souls starts off with Malthael the angel of death stealing the soulstone from Tyrael. Ultimately you are sourced with retrieving it and halting Malthael and his plot. (I am being vague here to avoid spoilers) I really enjoyed the addition of Act V and felt they really upped the ante from the base Diablo III experience. In Act V there are more things to explore, the world they created is deeper and the story isn't as chuckle-worthy.
Act V contains about 8 parts and starts in the battle ravaged town of Westmarch. The level design and art direction really shine and you don't go too long without seeing something totally new to look at. The mini-boss encounters are fun and the final battle with Malthael is much more challenging.
The Music of The Reaper
Some have said the music in Reaper of Souls is better than the music from the base Diablo III experience. I don't agree with that but I will say the music for Reaper of Souls is very different and more immediately memorable. Derek Duke takes the helm to pen a really massive score that reminds me of something from a modern film and less a Diablo game. Not to say the score doesn't seem like it comes from the world of Sanctuary, just that it seems to have evolved much from it's Diablo and Diablo II roots.
Bounties, Rifts and Adventure Mode
One of the strongest elements of Reaper of Souls is Adventure Mode. Adventure Mode allows you to go to whichever Act you fancy to complete Bounties. Bounties are in game goals that upon completion award you experience and rift tokens. Collect enough rift tokens and you can open a rift that is a random dungeon filled with tons of monsters and loot.
I like Adventure Mode because I can head into the game and complete 5 bounties in under an hour. Competing a set of bounties nets you a Horadric Cache which gets you an assortment of rift tokens, gems and loot.
The Crusade Marches On
The first thing I did when Reaper of Souls hit was start a Crusader and head back into Act I.
If you are curious what HammerTime, my current Crusader build is, clicky click.
I need to start focusing on socketing diamonds for all resist to make him less brittle. Currently he can hit pretty hard but doesn't fare too well against dense mobs. The Crusader has many skills that increase his block chance and I need to figure out a good build in that regard. Currently HammerTime feels "too glassy" and I want to change that.
Currently my DPS is high enough and when the Crusader starts throwing around his hammers it's insta-death for most mobs. I have heard that Blizzard is planning on patching the Crusader soon and I look forward to it. Some of the Crusader skills are not great and i'd love to have them changed such that they make sense to use.
The Final Verdict
If you love point and click RPG games, Reaper of Souls is well worth a look. If you are nervous about dropping the coin on Reaper of Souls because your were disappointed with Diablo III then just head back in and check out loot 2.0. The game has been changed considerably from when it initially launched two years ago and I think many of the major problems have been addressed. But really, at the end of the day I recommend it because killing things and looting the remains is just a lot of fun.
I hope he takes us back to the past and makes a movie that doesn't suck ass(sorry I had to)... I like what I am seeing from it more now that I saw before.
What do you think about the AVGN Movie Update? Will you watch this when it drops?

All the bugginess of it at least can be forgiven since it was a beta, but the combat just wasn't interesting, the voice acting (with some notable exceptions) was pretty rough...
Overall it seems like a lot of great ideas that they just didn't polish enough. Hopefully as time goes on they can fix some of it.

Hot off the re-release awesomery of Age of Empires HD, Age of Mythology Extended Edition is releasing in May. Like many gamers, I have the original and expansion and whereas it's a great game that still works for single player and LAN, online multiplayer has long since been shutdown and the games aspect ratio is 4x3. So hearing that Microsoft is going to polish up the old game, modernize it for bigger monitors and bring Steam online multiplayer, I am pretty excited.

I know. Now that Age of Mythology, Age of Empires and UT 2004 are on Steam I think the only game we play on LAN that isn't available is Rise of Nations.
I really liked the AoE HD release, looking forward to this one. I have never played Age of Mythology at all but I'm psyched that Microsoft is releasing its older catalog for Steam.
Now that the news of Gamespy shutting down and Games for Windows Live on its way out, maybe they'll re-release Halo 1 and 2 with some HD treatment.

I certainly hope so. Halo is a classic and should live on in PC form for quite some time.

If you are looking for a list of changes to the game the FTL developers made a fairly complete list available. Because of the popularity of the update the FTL site is getting hammered but the link is below. So far I like that there are many more changes than they advertised. Ben Prunty has made the new FTL tracks available for download and they are totally free. I listed to them all today and they really add quite a bit to the games tone. The new Lanius tracks and "Lost Ship" are quite good.
Just died, naturally. I'm really enjoying the Advanced Edition. They've put in a lot of polish first of all. It would be a lot to try and list out, but I definitely like how when you hover your mouse over a sector it shows you the next possible jumps from there.
The new systems are interesting. I sold my med bay and bought a clone bay. I think that's going to take some getting used to, but seems pretty cool.
A lot of new quests and instances made for an entirely unique feel again :)

It's been a while since I've loaded Steam, since I've been playing StarCraft II. Today, I noticed FTL has an update. I'll have to give it a try sometime. I haven't played FTL in a while.

Spoiler-free story intro: Many of the original characters have returned such as Kerrigan, Raynor, Mengsk, and Zeratul. The Zerg and Protoss are still about, but you don't control those forces in very many missions. For the Protoss, you get to play some missions with Zeratul, which are really cool. As for the Zerg, you have to wait until you play the Heart of the Swarm expansion, which is where I'm at now.
Difficulty: At the beginning, the missions were very easy, as the game was teaching you how to play. The level of difficulty of missions increased along the way, but luckily I could always chose the level of difficulty of each mission. In the end, I think I finished the last mission of the campaign on Casual. When the game chose to really kick my ass, that's what I did sometimes.
Still, there are achievements and rewards unlocked by beating a mission on a certain level of difficulty (such as Normal or Hard) and accomplishing optional objectives in the mission. I like how this game does this, which adds replay-ability and also value. Still, I think I paid less than $40 for the game and I'd been used to spending maybe about $60 on a game for the PS3.
SC2 is in many ways much like the original, but with some obvious improvements (such as the graphics) and with additional features (such as rewards and achievements). While there was new music (including the awesome song at the end during the credits), much of the original music returned, which I enjoyed. I can't recall all of what the units said when you clicked on them, but they still do that and it's still funny. SCVs, for example, say, "in the rear with the gear." Banshee pilots say, "apocalypse....now!"
In the last post, we talked about how the game (along with other Blizzard titles) have different editions. I found some more information about them at http://starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/StarCraft_II#Notes, which states: "On December 21st, 2010, a demo version of Wings of Liberty became available. The player could play through the first three missions, or play multiplayer (but only as Terrans against an AI opponent).
As of August 2011 the "Starter Edition" became available. This gives access to the first three missions of Wings of Liberty plus either The Evacuation or Smash and Grab (player's choice), the first two challenges: Tactical Command and Covert Ops, access to Terrans in Single-Player vs AI and Custom Games in the following maps: Discord IV, High Orbit, The Shattered Temple, Xel'Naga Caverns and the custom map StarJeweled, subject to change over time. Achievements and campaign progress will be saved in case the player upgrades to the full version of Wings of Liberty."
Anyone who enjoyed the original StarCraft, would most likely enjoy this sequel, it's well worth it. I also really enjoyed "Terran Up the Night" which can be found on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUqG5gB8nbI).
I don't have a Wii U. We make fun of the poor Wii U a lot because of the less than stellar launch, the lack of quality third-party games, the confusing name, and so on.
But look at this trailer and tell me you don't want one!

Good times, and yes, I want a Wii U now. So many good memories with Mario Kart. And now Hovercrafts and Hang gliders?! I don't think I saw any new maps though, only prettied-up oldies.
The game looks great and i'd love to play it. When I look at all the consoles out now, it's the one i'd have the easiest time purchasing because I know i'd play it.
At some point I may very well get one too, we will see. If I did, Mario Kart 8 would be one of the things i'd buy.
Really, it's that monstrous gamepad that keeps me away. I don't like it. Don't most games require you use it? I don't know, I think it would take a lot of getting used to.
You can also just use wii controllers with Wii U games... Most of the ones I have utilize two different control schemes with or without the pad controller. Also, multiplayer games can use different controllers (i.e. one player with the pad others with wii controllers). Pikmin 3 is also awesome on the Wii U :)

This is huge. I would expect Apple to follow suit, probably as early as this fall. I'm really surprised (and disappointed) that Apple didn't do this first, actually. They've had everything in place for years. Now Amazon has the infrastructure, hardware, and customer base, to be one of the hottest thing in home entertainment (no pun intended). If it works. I like the idea of the mic on the remote. Looks like it has double the gpu power that the Ouya has, too. Very, very interesting.
Eh, I don't know how well this is going to do. It's interesting as a media device, but with more and more TV's being "smart," most of the features of the box are being built directly into TV's. And as far as games, I think the kid who gets this as a game system will feel like the kids back in the 80's who got a VTech Socrates rather than a Nintendo.
@scrypt I agree. I expected Apple to do this first so it's cool and strange to see Amazon head in. That said, I am happy they have as this set top box is the most powerful of the bunch and I hope it sparks a "cheaper set top box spec war."
@Adym It isn't the greatest offering as far as games go right now for sure. That said, over time I imagine more developers will port games over and things should work pretty well. Amazons Android store isn't too bad and it's catalog of games is growing. It hits the right price point and has enough power to play some games. That said, this ain't gonna run BioShock Infinite.
Well maybe its because Apple 'sort of' did this... e.g., AppleTv + Airplay? I push whatever I am playing to it at times. Ironically just to record videos for demos... I don't really use it for anything but capturing a stream now that I think about it. I did demo a few games to my kids with it. Ok so maybe its not even remotely a single purpose console device experience. But my point is Apple might feel like they already HAVE entered the market... That is a very un-researched opinion. I do believe Apple is a horribly small company for the revenue stream they achieve. And at times it feels like they are holding this stuff together with bailing wire and duct tape. Covered in a a very pretty surface layer... but underneath there is chaos and hell chained with fury and just waiting to crack the surface and spew forth its vitriol onto the consumer or developer in some fashion if allowed.
Apple does have Apple TV for sure and like you say you can fling stuff from your iPad, iPhone and Mac to it. I think what we were talking about it not doing was having an app store and official controller. Right now you just get the apps it comes with, which is nice BUT no app store. So for me, it seems like Apple is right on the line of having something that could be WAY better.
On thing that keeps me away from the Apple option is I serve all my media off a NAS. Apple TV requires you fling content on it through the iPhone through AirPlay. If Apple TV had an app store I could use my NAS and uPNP.

One thing you can do is configure something else to act as an Airplay server. It's a little cumbersome, I've never done it, so I don't know how predictable it is.
As far as serving media, Apple TV primarily works through iTunes on a network Mac/PC. iOS apps require mirroring from an iPhone or iPad. Like you say, Jon, without access to native, downloadable apps, it is quite lacking compared to a Roku or Fire TV. That said, I love my Apple TV, and hope that, someday, Apple sees it's full potential. I hope the Fire TV will do just that. I tried Airplay once for gaming, and it's not optimal, or even playable. They have much work to do.
Airplay is great for Apple gear and I love the idea, I just hope it becomes a more open standard so you don't need to only use Apple stuff with it.
That said, if Apple TV got the full app store treatment i'd be more down with it so I can use non-Apple internal file sharing and such. But as is, it's kind of Apple only and whereas I do use iTunes, my NAS is always on for the reason of file sharing, I don't need to have my laptop on for it to magically work, Apple just makes me have use it.
