Click to embiggen the image above and take a look, then come back for more.

I want to preface this by saying that this is not intended to ridicule anyone. Please bear that in mind.

The image contains posts on the Super Metroid Miiverse page from quite a number of people who have gotten stuck in Super Metroid, mostly at the same place. I can clearly remember the wonder of playing this game the first time. It was my first Metroid game and when I got to this area I just assumed that I would come across something later that would let me get through.

These posts, however, show that things have changed. There was no NPC standing there telling them that this was blocked without a certain tool, or something to that effect, so they had no idea what to do.

Again, I'm not intending to make fun of people, but this shows more clearly than many other examples how the gaming landscape has changed. Modern gaming holds your hand and tells you everything you need to know. We hit a roadblock and backtracked to find somewhere we *could* go, but these posts show people hitting a roadblock and have no idea what to do.

I also don't want to sound like a bitter old man, talking about how gaming was better back in my day. It wasn't, necessarily. Bioshock Infinite most definitely held your hand through a lot of things, but it's some of the best time I've spent gaming. The Terraria wiki, the collective knowledge of everyone who has played the game, is basically required to know what to do for a large part of the game. While it's not the game holding your hand, you benefit from having a guide with you at all times. The new Tomb Raider had puzzle rooms that you could pretty much see the solutions to with a click of a button, but it was one of the most engrossing games of the past few years.

I guess what it comes down to is priorities. The early 8 and 16 bit systems didn't have the hardware for cinematic gameplay. It was basically all a puzzle or a test of hand-eye coordination. You were beating the system with your mind and reflexes.

Games today can spread their focus. With games almost universally coming with fully voiced dialogue, the ability to really wow you with the environments you play in, and all the other benefits that have come from higher-powered hardware, games can appeal to casual gamers as well as hardcore gamers.

Basically, the game has changed, for better and worse, but we're still having fun aren't we?

It's been joked about for years that Steam is a game in and of itself-- much like Pokemon, you gotta catch em all. They had little contests around the major sales that helped support this claim, but now that's being kicked up a notch.

Currently in beta, Steam Trading Cards are virtual cards you earn while playing Steam games. Once you collect a set, you can turn them into a profile badge (like the "Pillar of the Community" badge from one of last year's sales) that will get you virtual items and XP toward your Steam level. Leveling up earns you other virtual items. Also, you can win coupons for other games, which is what's driving my interest.

It looks interesting. Steam is finally implementing something like a gamerscore but with more involvement.

What do you think?

I'm going through a bit of a gaming funk. I honestly think I blame Bioshock Infinite for that a little bit for setting the bar too high. I just can't seem to get into any game I try to play these days.

So I ask you. What is your favorite game of all time? And please elaborate on why it's your favorite. I'll then start going down the list, playing each of your favorites that I can get access to. Even if I've just played it recently I'll replay it. I'll try to get the original version of anything that's been remade, and avoid emulators when possible to recreate the original experience. I also invite you all to join in the fun and play these with me, then we can have a post for each to discuss their awesomeness.

Bonus points for classic games, but certainly not required.

I know narrowing it down to one game to rule them all may be difficult, so if you need to stretch it I understand, but for the purposes of not creating a giant backlog for me, fewer is better.

Also in the interest of this not going on for too long, I won't guarantee completion of RPG epics. If someone says "Skyrim" for example, I'll start a new character and play it for a good while but I'm not going to go for 100+ hours like I normally would.

BONUS: If you want, feel free to include the worst ever as well. I can't promise I'll play them for long, but I'll play them. And you can join in my misery here as well :)

I never played the first Saints Row, because I heard it was a mediocre GTA clone. The second one, though, got some good press and people claimed it was the spiritual successor to the PS2-era GTA games. Even though I thought GTA4 was the best in the series, many thought it put too much focus on the serious storyline and took away from the zany antics of its predecessors. So, anyway, I picked it up and it was a lot of fun.

The third game didn't hold a ton of appeal for me. I have it, I got it as part of one of the Humble Bundles at one point, but I have yet to play it. The zany antics took a front seat. You even have a melee weapon shaped like a giant dildo. The dick and fart jokes were obviously in full effect, and that's not really my jam, so I have yet to play it. It's still on my backburner, and I intend to get into it someday, but it didn't make me want to dive right in.

Now, the fourth game is on the horizon. There are crazy weapons, and if I'm being honest the dubstep gun looks hilarious. There are, as always, crazy cars. Monster trucks that can take out cars in your way. But then there are superpowers. You can run faster than you can drive. You can jump high enough and glide far enough that planes and helicopters seem unnecessary. And you have what appears to be over-the-top fun hand-to-hand combat. So why would you ever use vehicles or guns?

On the one hand, this seems like a game trying to be too much, throwing in so many different mechanics that it becomes a muddled mess. On the other hand, the freedom to do things the way you want is appealing, and the quests may take a backseat to truly fun sandbox freedom. What's your take?

Oh, and, you are now the President of the United States and you're fighting aliens instead of rival gangs. Can't leave that out.

Diablo III recently released version 1.8, so I thought I'd pop in and see what's up.

The auction houses are offline. Apparently yesterday there was a major gold duping glitch that people think will essentially ruin the economy, so that's awesome. This didn't bother me tonight, because it's been so long since I really played the game that I honestly have no clue what good gear is anymore, so I certainly wasn't about to buy any.

This patch smoothed out a lot of the problems a lot of people have with the game. I played through the last couple of quests of act 1 Inferno, which is so far as far as I've gotten. I can certainly see the progress. The trash mobs feel a lot stronger, and the elite packs have been toned down a bit. You now always have to be on guard to a point, but don't freak right the hell out when you see blue or yellow on the screen.

One of my big pet peeves, identifying rare items one by one by one by one by one has been taken care of. You can now visit Deckard Cain (or a book near where he would be) to identify all your items at once. In other streamlining fixes, you can now queue up things to craft so that you don't have to sit there clicking once every few seconds until you're satisfied with what you've done, and you can pull crafting materials from your stash so you don't have to carry those with you to the artisans.

I was amazed at how easily I fell back into the game, having gone many months without really playing it, and it still holds the same appeal. I went on into act 2 after slamming the butcher, and I was able to get through the stupid bee things much more easily than before. The difficulty curve between acts seems to have smoothed out a bit. I then got to an elite pack of vortex desecrator bee things and got handily demolished, and decided that was a good place to call it quits for the night.

Still, progress has definitely been made, and I think I'll look at revamping my gear and getting on to act 2 soon. For anyone who quit the game because of whatever gripes you may have had, it's definitely worth another look.

Just don't expect to get any good gear on the auction house for less than a few billion gold for a few weeks.

This is one of my favorite fan dubs ever. How Elizabeth would react to you being a moron in Bioshock Infinite. No real spoilers in this, so feel free to watch while preserving your ignorance!

MachineGames, a subsidiary of Bethesda Softworks, is working on Wolfenstein: The New Order. This game takes place in an alternate history 1960 after the Nazis won WWII. You play again as BJ Blazkowicz to take down the supernaturally charged Nazi war machine!

A notable omission from the news I've read about this today is that no mention is made of id software's involvement in the game. MachineGames is a relatively new studio made up of former Starbreeze Studios employees. Hopefully that means id is working hard on Doom 4 as we speak, but I was hoping the next Wolfenstein installment would be done by id themselves.

Disney and EA today announced a multi-year agreement for game development. DICE and Visceral will be the two new studios involved in game development, with Bioware continuing what they've been doing with Star Wars already.

Visceral makes sense. Games like Dead Space show their chops. But DICE doesn't make as much sense. Since 2005, they've pretty much been making only Battlefield games, with a brief break from that for Mirror's Edge. Maybe they'd be a good fit for a Star Wars: Battlefront type of game.

Anthony Burch, whether intentionally or accidentally, tweeted this picture of a guy sleeping at Gearbox earlier today. It was quickly removed, but some fast people snagged it before it was taken down. See that in the background? Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon's Keep.

In the teaser earlier this year, we saw Tiny Tina leading the vault hunters in a D&D style game, and this looks to fit with the theme. There are already theories on what "Dragon's Keep" might be, some even going so far to propose that this is the title she gave to the Hyperion Moon Base.

So there you have it, take it with all the grains of salt you have. I'm personally looking forward to whatever comes out. I decided to stop playing the game until the last (planned) DLC came out, so I'm excited to get back to it!

EDIT: This has now been confirmed: http://www.polygon.com/2013/5/2/4294564/borderlands-2-dlc-tiny-tinas-assault-on-dragon-keep-release-date

Unfortunately now we just have to wait until June 25.

In just a few weeks, Chucklefish has sold over a million bucks in preorders.

An indie game that very few people have actually gotten to play has generated this amount of interest just through videos and screenshots. At the risk of sounding cliche, this is a testament to what the indie gaming scene can do, and to what highly creative ideas can accomplish.

The title says it all, so I don't have much else to say except WHY DON'T I HAVE THIS GAME YET!?
