I love this kind of thing... It merges two of my favorite things programming (specifically algorithms) and gaming.
So, when I first heard of this project a couple few months ago, I was dubious. I mean, prisons seem an odd setting for a tycoon-type game; it isn't exactly a lighthearted endeavor. This could probably easy drift into completely tasteless territory. Relevant: [https://www.google.com/search?q=prison+tycoon+4]

This game looks incredible and I want to play it, but I think ill wait till beta or launch. How much more do they have to go before the actual release? I have no real reason to wait save... I think I need to wait to experience the full amazingness of this game in its full glory.
I love sim games and Roller Coaster Tycoon is in my continual play as I have a game going I play off and on until the end of time.
Oh, they have a Linux port now, awesome. Kind of live commenting on the video :D

Not sure really. It's a small team plodding away with it, and I don't think they're in any terrible hurry to call things 'done.' They funded it on their own by selling access to the alpha before they even really started in earnest, and that netted $1 million. So I think they're pretty cosy and are just going to keep whittling until there's nothing left to do. I suspect at some point this summer they'll stop calling it an alpha simply from lack of large awkward mechanics bugs, but I also suspect work wil continue on this for some time.
Yea, definitely worth mentioning: can buy over Steam, get Win/Mac/Linux.
Another bundle site which I buy from every now and then... But this bundle is great! All Arcen games. So there's AI War: Fleet Command and 5 dlc packs for it, A Valley Without Wind 1 and 2, Shattered Haven and Tidalis.
Everything is on steam and desura (along with direct download) except for the latest AI War dlc which isn't on steam (I'm hoping it will be).

AI War looks cool. Have you played it yet? How is it?

I haven't yet played it -- need to get a windows machine working to play it (sigh... getting so used to being able to play on my linux boxen lately). However, it's one that I've almost bought a few times because it looks like a fun RTS
Microsoft has posted some details about how the Xbox One is going to function as a console, and on first glance, it's kinda crap news. Here's a link, if you haven't seen it yet. Go ahead and take a quick gander, I'll wait. :)
So, my first grumble grumble is about the inability to actually *loan* a game to a friend. But, I do have to say that Microsoft is trading a lot of other features that kind of offset that: the idea that I can play any of my games on a friend's console, whether I brought the games with me or not, is kinda cool. So, my first grumble grumble is about the inability to actually *loan* a game to a friend. But, I do have to say that Microsoft is trading a lot of other features that kind of offset that: the idea that I can play any of my games on a friend's console, whether I brought the games with me or not, is kinda cool. Most of the time I want to loan a game to a friend, it's because I want to share the experience in the first place; it's probably a net gain for me that I can always do that with all my games, even if I can't do it asynchronously anymore. I think I'm OK with the constraints here.
Second, the "always on" idea. On the one hand, my console has long been my last bastion of entertainment when the Internet goes out but the power stays on. On the other, I can't remember the last time I was without Internet for 24 hours. Hell, if push came to shove, I'm not too fancy to take the Xbox to a friend's house to borrow a cup of wifi. I like the updating-in-the-background concept. On the balance, I think this one's OK too - I'm not going to get heartburn if, during the console's 6-year lifespan, I'm blocked once or twice by a bad combination of long Internet outage and unwillingness to jump through hoops to solve.
Now, the used games thing - this is more troublesome. Publishers "may" authorize reselling of games via "participating retailers"? This is where we formally turn games from things you buy into things you license or lease. The publishers will say this has always been the case; while it may or may not be technically true it certainly wasn't the case in practice. I like going to yard sales and getting games; I like knowing that if my plate is too full today for Final Fantasy XIII, then at least I can look forward to snagging it used in a year or two. Now, I get to *hope* that publishers will allow me to do that, and that's a disappointing situation and a significant problem for me. But again, Steam doesn't support the Used Game paradigm, and my PC Gaming library has absolutely flourished.
All in all, it looks like the Xbox One has all the bad bullet points we were afraid it might. But, maybe those bullet points don't mean the end of Gaming As We Know It. What do you all think?
I'm not as worried about my internet connection as I am Microsoft's. Remember what happens on every major launch? XBox Live crashes pretty hard. If you miss your window to get updates and you want to play games but Live is screwed up at the moment, no games for you.
PC gaming has always been a little different. I understand the Steam model because games are so easy to pirate on PCs, but generally requires a hurdle of software, or often even hardware, hacking on a console to achieve.
Steam may not support used games, but I just picked up Batman Arkham Asylum on Steam for $5. If Microsoft can support a similar economy to Steam's when it comes to older games, then the pill becomes a little easier to swallow. Otherwise, they will simply lose customers, and quite a few of them at that.

@Travis: That's a good point about the Microsoft servers. I didn't really think of that at first; I usually miss the major launch events by at least a few weeks. Hopefully they've figured out the logistics a bit better - they've *got* to know how much worse it'll be if they screw up this time.
@Scrypt: I'm hopeful that the old-game market will be rather exactly like that. Once a title gets to be a couple years old, it boils down to a question of whether they can sell the game at enough of a discount to warrant production & shipping costs; if the delivery is purely digital ala Steam, the question slowly morphs into "would the studio rather have $5 or not have $5." I think the basic economic principles of the two platforms are the same, and I'd be really surprised if we saw markedly different strategies arise for them.
I'm wondering how they are implementing the "family" grouping. That is, anyone in your up to 10 member "family" can play your games on any machine. That will be interesting how that plays out. I used to always share games with friends in the "I'll buy this one, you buy the next" and we pass the discs back and forth. If they could just be added as "family" that would change things.
So I'd have to imagine they'd limit it somehow so groups of friends didn't get together to pool games. If not, woo hoo!! actual benefit of being disc-less with M$
Good point scrypt, yeah Steam doesn't have used games but at the cheap sale prices its not like that effectively isn't the same thing as buying used. Sometimes its an even better deal that used. That said, I don't anticipate Microsoft adopting the Steam pricing model here. I don't know, I guess I just don't hope for the best with Microsoft.
Any kind of launch is precarious because I am not certain how Microsoft could be 100% ready for the demand on day one. It's possible, I just don't see how.
That said, Blizzzard handled Starcraft 2 and Heart of the Swarm flawlessly on day one for me.
I didn't own a previous XBox, not that it matters here because nothing will work on the XBox One from previous systems save your physical movies(kind of an interesting aside, the only thing that ports forward is physical media and mp3s. Aren't those supposed to be dead formats? :D ) The more we hear about the system the less interested in it I am. That said, if it was $50 I might consider it. Well, even then I might not. It does everything I can do now already so I guess I just don't see the point. For me, I imagine others will love it.

server support
In the past Cheerful Ghost has run game servers that last a month or so and as such events now support that use case. You can now put in your Server URL and Server Password into the event and if someone successfully joins an event they can access the URL and password. The reason this information will only be available to people that join the event is so you can keep this information secure to avoid griefers.
Moderated events in conjunction with server events will run the next Terraria 1.2 Cheerful Ghost server. So basically people will ask to join the server and when you are approved you will get access to the server URL and password. This will make it easier for us to communicate when we pop the game into hardmode as well as ensuring we don't overload the server. Over the lifetime of the server, the password may change as well and keeping this all in the event will make this much simpler.
Creating moderated and server based events are only available to Cheerful Ghost Members. If you are interested in becoming a Cheerful Ghost member read about it here:
Like most galleries I imagine they probably have a no photography rule, but if allowed I'll snap some photos to share with all of you after the event. :)
Will any fellow Happy Haunts from the Southern California area be attending the opening night for the new Iam8bit exhibit?
Mrs. Slim and I will be attending and would be happy to meet up with anyone else who can attend. Admission is free on opening night. :)

I am 8bit rule. They put on the Dishonored event I went to at PAX last year which was one of the coolest video game related things I've ever done.

That's awesome. Their headquartered here in L.A. and I've been wanting to go to one of their events for awhile. This is the first time I've had the chance to make it down to one, so I'm pretty excited!
I want someone to remake The Dark Knight in Minecraft. Not just the trailer, the whole film. Its cool, I can wait.

If you were wanting to wait to dive into the world of Skyrim, now might be a good time to do that. Bethesda released the Legendary Edition that wraps up all the Skyrim expansions into one game. Featuring Dragonborn, Hearthfire and Dawguard this should keep you in Dragon slaying heaven.
If you buy large game tomes, Prima is also releasing the Skyrim legendary edition Game Guide. Last game guide I bought was for Fallout 3 and all its DLC and was quite large but this looks like it covers much more stuff. You know, if you were into reading game hints on actual... paper and all.

Yes... excellent. Release this just as I get a new, more powerful PC. ;)
I plan on picking this up at some point, but I'm still working through too many other games to justify purchasing it right now. I will be watching Steam sales though.
As for the prima guide... I dunno. I stopped buying players guides when Final Fantasy IX came out and the official guide sucked. By far the WORST. GUIDE. EVER. Since then I just use gamefaqs.

Skyrim: Yeah, now that you have a powerful PC you won't ever be out of things to play. Hell even a mid range PC can play most of the free to play games now. I bet this summer sale the price will drop a bit, but since its brand new it won't be $20... OR WILL IT?
Guides: The last guides I bought were for Twilight Princess & Fallout 3. I was kind of wanting something to read when I wasn't playing the games(before I had a smartphone). They are great guides, VERY well put together. In fact, much better than the guides we had back in the day. Then again, games were a bit simpler, I have the FFVI guide and its quite a bit smaller.

Many people played Diablo 3, and then for whatever reason hit a wall where it was no longer enjoyable. For most, it seems, that wall was Inferno. Back in the day the increase in difficulty when moving to Inferno was so high, people just stopped. But there have been many patches over the time Diablo 3 has been out, which have added some interesting and fun features. If you've been wondering if it's time to come back, here's what you may have missed.
General improvements First off, and probably most importantly, things have been smoothed out. Some skills that were lacking have been buffed, some that were way overpowered have been scaled back. The difficulty curve when going into Inferno has been adjusted so you don't feel like you're running into a brick wall. Many other things have been adjusted so the game just *feels* better, and it's hard to put my finger on why.
Paragon levels Unlike Sir Patrick Stewart (http://i.imgur.com/RZk4cX2.jpg) now when you reach max level, you don't stop leveling. On top of the 60 normal levels, there are 100 paragon levels that you can achieve to increase your stats as you work your way through all Inferno has to offer. Each level gives you 3 of your primary stat, 2 vitality, and 1 of each other main stat. In addition, you gain 3% gold find and magic find. You'll gradually get stronger and tougher, and pick up more fun stuff as you farm Inferno.
Monster Power If you want more of a challenge than what the base difficulty gives, you can increase the Monster Power up to 10. Each level of Monster Power makes the enemies a little stronger, but gives you more experience, magic and gold find, and fun. In Inferno, playing at MP1 or above greatly increases the density of enemies in a level, which can lead to some seriously badass fights.
Keywardens, the Infernal Machine and the Hellfire Ring There's a new enemy type called Keywardens, and one appears in each act. The first three have a chance to drop a different key, and the Act 4 Keywarden drops the plan for the infernal machine. Once you get one of each key and teach your blacksmith how to make it, you can have him make you an Infernal Machine.
The Infernal Machine will take you to a different realm where you fight buffed versions of bosses that appear elsewhere in the game, two at a time. Again, there are three sets, and each set has a chance to drop a different item that you'll need to take to your jeweler to have him make the Hellfire Ring. You can choose the main stat, and it gets other random rolls.
This may seem like a lot to do for a single item, but this isn't just another legendary. This ring gives you a significant boost to experience and has a chance to spawn a fireball.
So if you haven't played in a while, and especially if you have a level 60 you abandoned because Inferno just wasn't fun, you should definitely give it another shot. If you liked the mechanics but felt like the game wasn't scaled well or didn't give you enough fun things to do, the team has made some changes that make it far more fun and worth your time.
This is a great update, thanks Travis. Getting a Hellfire Ring looks epic. Do you have one yet? Also, do you fight those zones on MP10 to get the keywarden drops and organ drops everytime?

Nope, no hellfire ring yet, but we're working on it. We're so far only going as high as MP4, that's about as much as we feel comfortable with, and plus that should average out to a drop almost every other visit so it isn't a huge deal. MP10 would absolutely kill us at this point!
I bet, then again I stopped at the molten armor in Terraria because going higher was much more work.
My goal with our upcoming server is to get a higher tier of armor this time. At least, last time I nabbed the molten armor... Or whatever you mine in hell... Obsidian?
This is horribly off-topic because I am jonesn for the 1.2 patch.

Yeah it's molten. Obsidian is one or two tiers below Molten.
With the new content to hardmode, the new ores, etc... I bet it's going to be much harder to max out. I CAN DO IT.
It's almost like Tetris was built for this. The window is the perfect size for sprites.
Wow. The creativity of people is really astounding sometimes.
