I just created a new Let's Play video. The idea of this one was that I would pick a direction in my first Minecraft world to explore. Part of the awesomeness of Minecraft is how open and expansive the worlds are. Its impressive.
I wasn't sure how long I would be out exploring, but the video spans two Minecraft days. Since I don't mark my path, I return to my house by getting killed.
Enjoy.

There is a difference in what the different trees can make. They make different colored wooden planks. Functionally they're no different, but they can be used to make different colored houses/floors. :D
Also, a shovel is the most efficient tool for digging in dirt/grass. I noticed you used a pick for most of that.
A tip for fighting creepers is to dash attack them. When you dash attack them it knocks them back far enough to reset their fuse or timer or whatever you want to call it. Also, higher quality swords will do more damage. So while you probably don't need diamond tools for most things, I recommend a diamond sword. :) (and a diamond pick axe for mining obsidian)
You can actually tame those wolves you found. If you feed them bones they'll start following you around.

There are a few 'mod manager' type systems to help out, but I never delve deeply into any of them. My kids love Technic Pack and Tekkit http://www.technicpack.net/ which applies a BUNCH of mods to a separate install, so you can run it and vanilla side-by-side (in fact I think technic is still based on minecraft 1.2.5). But the launcher has several modpacks to begin with (tecnic, tekkit, hack/mine and yogbox) so it's an easy way to see a bunch of mods w/o messing around with minecraft.jar :)

That's a good thought. It couldn't be Steam coupons or anything like that unless you make a deal with the publishers. But for further giveaways, it could definitely work. Just have it send something to you saying who won what, and you could just give them the game on Steam.
If you wanted to reuse steamgifts.com you could create a giveaway that is restricted to a Steam group, and play slots or whatever you choose for a place in that group. But that would start to have way too many moving pieces.
Yeah, interesting. Maybe I can try and contact the publishers. This site did it, so ill add it to my list of things to do. :D Its free promotion for them either way.

Well, this site *is* one of the publishers. But they got the others on board, so yeah. I don't see why they'd complain.

In a series of events not entirely clear to me a few thousand copies of a prototype print of Cheetahman 2 were found in an old Action 52 storage area. These were later put on EBay and currently fetch for a high price.
Intro Greg Pabich, the Wizard behind the recent Cheetahmen 2: The Lost Levels Kickstarter. This Kickstarter looks to bring Cheetahmen 2 a modern pressing and revive a lost cult classic. I was able to talk to Greg and ask him about the recent Kickstarter and the history of the Cheetahmen.
jdodson: Hi Greg, thanks for taking the time to talk to me about Cheetahmen. When I was at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo your Cheetahmen Booth caught my eye and I wanted to talk to ask you about the Cheetahmen and its history.
The legacy of Cheetahmen starts with Action 52, a company that made a game cart that included 52 games, Cheetahmen being the 52nd game. I wonder if you could explain for us how you were involved with Action 52 in the beginning.
Greg Pabich: A long story. Let's just say I got lucky. Actually, because of the dark side of active enterprises and the missing millions, it's best not to discuss this in detail.
But, it had a basis in a legitimate interest i had in being the U.S. distributor for an action packed multicart called Action 52 back in late 1990.
jdodson: When you realized you had a few thousand Cheetahmen 2 carts in your possession how long did it take you realize what you had?
Greg Pabich: Not accurate. I had one copy of a prequil game and made several thousand copies to sell (Cheetahmen: The Creation) thankfully, I have only a few hundred left after a very successful launch in 2011.
jdodson: You are accepting a video game legacy award and are on stage with Kanye West. He interrupts you and says: āYo Greg, iām really happy for you imma let you finish but Shigeru Miyamoto had one of the greatest games of all time!ā What does Greg Pabich do?
Greg Pabich: I say "that shig, he one smart dude" then I take my award and Gangnam Style dance off the stage.
jdodson: Cheetahmen 2: The Lost Levels Kickstarter was a success, congratulations on that. Do you plan on selling Cheetahmen 2: The Lost Levels outside the Kickstarter to people that couldnāt participate at some point after the game ships in December?
Greg Pabich: Yes, I will have a few hundred games to sell because to get the price down to the lowest possible level for the kickstarter backers, I had to commit to the purchase of approximately 2,000 games, boxes labels, comics, etc. I also had to make the minimum qtys in two other colors for the super duper collector sets (those that come two in the special box)
These games will be sold at a significantly higher price than the kickstarter units.
jdodson: Action 52 was planning on the Cheetahmen being a big hit akin to the Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles and according to legend had an action figure line planned. Did they have any prototypes or any initial first draft concepts created?
Greg Pabich: Yes, I am working with a noted game designer/company to produce a limited edition action figure set to coincide with future releases (2013).
jdodson: As Cheetahmen 2: The Lost Levels is nearing release, the legend of the Cheetahmen lives on. I wonder what made you come back to the Cheetah-verse again?
Greg Pabich: It's the music. I have never not had that tune playin' in my head since I first heard itā¦ā¦
jdodson: I wonder, in your opinion when you felt The Simpsonās jumped the shark? Should they continue the show or let its legacy rest with some of the greatest TV of all time?
Greg Pabich: How could I go on without a new episode each week?
jdodson: Many people seemed to have negative feelings to Cheetahmen 2: The Lost Levels Kickstarter. In fact, Angry Video Game Nerd and his partner pulled support after they were initially involved with the Cheetahmen 2 Kickstarter video. As you navigate the seas of this negative attention what are your thoughts about it and does it affect how you continue on?
Greg Pabich: Correction!!! The AVGN did not pull support for this project. After some trolls started to make a fuss on his website, Mike, disabled the comments; a move that just inflamed the trolls even more. With all of us involved on a plane to the CGE show in Las Vegas and out of touch, Mike posted a less than artfull video trying to explain the AVGN's position. Realistically, the explanation video could have been better, but as soon as we landed and posted written info (and my own video) about the costs involved, most of those who had legitimate questions were satisfied that the project was legit; surprise- the trolls never shut up!
The AVGN posted his own video explaining, as we have all said throughout the project. "contribute to this asonishinging project if you want to; don't contribute if you don't want to."
Btw, the AVGN, Pat the NES Punk and The Game Chasers were not paid to appear in that Kickstarter video. They did it because they all were previously tied into reviews of Action 52 and the Cheetahmen story and wanted to do their part to keep retro gaming growing.
Although I heard some of the most incredible lies/tales about the project and myself, the backers will all have the last laugh as we ship the rewards in December as promised and the trolls who tried to ruin the fun for thousands of Cheetahmen fans will slink away and hide under their rock.
jdodson: You have dropped some information that you will be releasing a Cheetahmen game on iPhones and iPads. I wonder, will this be a port of some version of the original or a new creation?
Greg Pabich: Going to be spending big bucks to develop a totally new Cheetahmen game. ( also, as an early backer of the ouya Kickstarter project, we are planning a version for this new and exciting platformā¦.)
jdodson: Do you have any plans to release a more modern version of Cheetahmen on consoles or the PC?
Greg Pabich: See above.
Our friends at Suckerfree Games have plans for a Cheetahmen 3 for the XBox 360 and PSP. Going to be spending big bucks to develop a totally new Cheetahmen game. ( also, as an early backer of the ouya Kickstarter project, we are planning a version for this new and exciting platformā¦.)
jdodson: I told my younger sister(she is 16) I was giving you an interview and she wants to know what your favorite Pizza place is?
Greg Pabich: Like everyone, it is a small place around the cornerā¦. It's called "Joes". Hold the anchovies.
jdodson: Cheetahmen is panned as a very difficult game due to its gameplay and various bugs. What is your personal best going through both games?
Greg Pabich: I have never played it. One does not have to play it, one has to live itā¦ā¦ā¦
jdodson: As you are fixing the Cheetahmen 2 for the Lost Levels are you correcting the jump bug that allows you to jump over entire levels?
Greg Pabich: We did not change a thing that gives it its unique character. Only made all levels play through and made it affordable( because of the price, even the people that own an original are afraid to put it in a console to actually play it)
jdodson: Any plans to branch out into other avenues of gaming? Have you considered releasing other games or are you focused only on the Cheetahmen and its legacy?
Greg Pabich: There is enough about the history and mystery of the Cheetahmen to keep me busy for a long, long timeā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦
jdodson: Which of the Cheetahmen do you most identify with? Hercules, Ares or Apollo?
Greg Pabich: I am the best of all three (although some think I am closer to Dr. Morbis)
jdodson: I have an idea I want to leave with you Greg.
SON OF CHEETAHMEN: A BOND REKINDLED! The ābond rekindledā part is negotiable, but the idea is there is a Cheetahkid who is the son of the Cheetahmen. Its ambiguous which is his Dad and should be played for humor value and frankly they might all be his Dad who knows... Point is, he is a Cheetah kid and he kicks... a lot of ass!
Greg Pabich: Like it because it then forces us to come to grips with a fabulously hot Cheetahgirl!!!
jdodson: He will also have an awesome catch phrase like āBY THE ENERGY OF MY ROOTS AS THE SON OF CHEETAHMENā and āGOOD WILL ALWAYS KEEP PACE AND EVENTUALLY DEFEAT EVIL AT LEVEL 9!ā
Greg Pabich: Sounds like you have seen "Galaxy Quest" as many times as I have.
jdodson: Lets see... he is smaller so you wonāt have problems having him duck like the original games. Maybe he can have a special ability to call his Cheetah Dadās for help for a few seconds to clear a difficult game screen or open locked doors to progress.
jdodson: Greg, I really do appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions and wonder if you want to say anything before we wrap things up.
Greg Pabich: I really hate trolls!!!! CHEETAHMEN FOREVER
Yes. Also, any prominent political figures you enjoyed assassinating? King George perhaps. Wait, I don't think he was in the colonies...

It was fantastic. I don't think it was as good as Ezio's games, but it was a ton of fun. I'd recommend it if you liked the previous games, but be prepared for some gameplay mechanics changes. Nothing too jarring, but it takes some getting used to.
I think the new site re design is going well and decided to create the video showcasing a bit about it. The new design isn't a totally new shift, its a evolution and I think is an improvement over the original.
Sound off the in comments with your thoughts. I plan on starting the work to integrate the new design into the site soon so get your feedback in!

Or I guess I should be thanking myself, since I apparently posted it!
I really dig the new site design. It's going to make expanding and adding new features much easier in the future. I like the side-by-side, but I can see why some may find it distracting. If it's easy to do a toggle, that might be an option.
I love the new look! I really like incorporating more pulldown menus, so there's less button clutter on the screen. The side-by-side threw me for a minute, but I think I'll like that a lot when I get used to it. Plus it'll be twice as much content to interest a new user!
Yay I am in the video haha. So I wanted to make a few small comments. Love the new look. I personally really enjoy the side by side. However there's a small thing that I feel like can be done now because of the newly designed titles. As an ocd person I would love to be able to auto center them. I so want to see the title in the dead center of the post. Also in the new site design it'd be really cool if in the settings menu you could mess around with different colors. I love the colors right now but maybe I might want to mess around with them at some point. Colors of the backgrounds and font and such I mean. It wouldn't change for anyone else just like personal color settings.

@jacob I will look into centering the titles. That shouldn't be hard to do.
I will add a UI customization or theme option to my list. Not sure when I will get to it, but its a great idea!
If I may add a dissenting opinion, I'm not sure centered titles would look right considering the layout. With the avatar where it is, dead center wouldn't look centered because there would be less space from the avatar to the left edge of the title, and centering it in the space after that wouldn't look centered to the article text.
I do love the idea of user-configurable color/theme choices though.

@panickedthumb Good point. I prefer it the way it is but I will experiment with it either way.
hmm. That is a good point panicked. Hadn't really thought about that. I guess that probably would still bother me since it wouldn't line up with the text. That's a bummer. It's not a major thing I just get really ocd about titles in particular.
I like the sleek new design. It makes the site look new and like it has a bit of depth to it. I'm back and forth on the side by side posts though. I feel like in some situations it would be nice, and in others it wouldn't. Haven't made my mind up whether I like it better or not.

Thanks BR! I am too, I am leaning to not side by side right this minute though. Easy enough to bring back though.
Hm. About longer titles john. You think you'd be able to have like a sub context spot for the titles? On panicked's example "Assassin's Creed III PC" would be the title. With the sub-text being "now available for pre-order on Steam". There'd be a lot of instances I could see that coming in handy.
I'm working on something for tomorrow or Monday that would benefit from the ability to add images or embeds inline, rather than just the one at the top. The potential for overuse is quite high, but it would be convenient.

XCOM is a turn based squad game. Basically its similar to something like Final Fantasy Tactics or the like where you take turns against the computer to overwhelm them. But don't let that absolutely bad description fool you, the game is pretty intense. The demo comes with a few missions and some compelling story to give you a good taste of what the game has in store. I enjoyed the intro missions and they really teach you how to play the game and then kick you into the action.
My only gripe about the game was really a demo limitation in that I couldn't save any progress. I didn't quite finish the demo in an hour or so but it doesn't allow you to save. That means when you come back to it you have to start at the beginning. I imagine this isn't a problem in the full meal deal.
One interesting feature I noticed as I was reading about the game on Wikipedia is the game comes with an interesting multiplayer mode. You start with an amount of points and can allocate them on certain things as you wish and go head to head with another player. Reminds me of dueling when I think about how that would play out.
In between your missions you have a base you can use to upgrade your units and do other stuff. The part of the demo I played didn't go too deep into that but it was cool to be able to see your upgraded units in your base. Oh right, XCOM brings an interesting feature to the table in that if you have units that survive missions they gain XP and get better. So you can have a badass vetran soldier you use in every battle. Just have to be careful because if they die it is permanent.
That all said install and play the demo as its available on Steam and the consoles(I played it on Steam) and let me know what you thought of it. In a world of mostly shooter games, its nice to get a tactical turn based game with some honest to God fun strategy elements to it.
I had no idea there was a demo. From what I've read this is a lot like Valkyria Chronicles, which really makes me want to play it. I will definitely be grabbing the demo.
While we're at it Valkyria Chronicles is something that I think any PS3 owner should try.
Well awesome I can comment on every one of these things. I just recently bought Valkyria Chronicles. I have to say I agree that it is a must own game and secondly, that it is somewhat similar. You can certainly compare the two.
As I have also played the original xcom recently. I REALLY like it. Never has a game so old still been able to actually make me think about buying it over a newer game. Especially with no nostalgia interfering as I never played it as a kid. Hands down its one of the best strategy games out there on top with some of my all-time favorites. The newer xcom is definitely worth playing it's in a whole new league of gameplay though.

According to a recent Tweet by iD's John Carmack it looks like the Rage modding tools will be released really soon. Interested in seeing how this breathes some life back into Rage. I was really excited about this game and it would be awesome to see what the community can do with this.
I think one of the best parts of Rage was the split-screen co-op "Legends of the Wasteland." I also really liked the death match car combat as well. To the end of the game it got a bit stale, but overall I rather enjoyed Rage.

That makes sense.
I am a iD fan, so I was extremely excited about Rage. I kind of had a roller coaster of experiences with it. My first experience was on PC and it was incredible. The first half of the game is really great. But I switched to PS3 when my copy arrive and had a bad go of it all as Rage was hard as hell with the controller(for me). Plus the load times and I died a lot made the game way less fun.
Went back to the PC version after WAY too much un comfort with the console version and had more fun. I came to the half way point and the story and pacing really changed I felt. It was less story driven and it started to lose me a bit.
That said, I still come back and co-op legends of the wasteland with my friends and will complete Rage single player at some point. The is also very pretty. Really pretty on PC.
I'm excited about this game. Strange because it is an iPad and iPhone game. Check it out.

Unfortunately, I am not one of them. They are going to be gradually expanding their test, so get that Ubuntu partition ready!
This also coincides with a new NVIDIA driver release that appears to double framerates in some cases. You definitely want this if you are an NVIDIA user and do any gaming in Linux.

Yeah, you get the client and log in, then just move the window telling you that you shouldn't be doing this off to the side and use it as normal, basically.
I have to wonder if they didn't guard against that intentionally.
Prob more work to limit it than just let it swing open if people want it. Seems like Valve makes choices to what is better for the user, not much else.

Couple notes/tips. :)
I think I saw a pig in a tree at 12:35. This game is unnatural!
Really fun video. Not too long!
Awesome, thanks for the feedback it was really fun to make.
WhiteboySlim: thanks for the tips. I do typically shovel dirt but sometimes I don't always remember. Cool you can take wolves with bones, ill try that next time!
Also, you can add a minimap mod (e.g. REI's) which can help you to always find home.
