Last year Re-Logic announced Terraria Otherworld, a game set in the Terraria-verse that contains more RPG styled gameplay. The initial concept and game shown seemed solid and most Terraria fans were interested in playing it when it launched. As you may have noticed, there hasn't been a ton of news on the Otherworld front and we now know why that is. Terraria Otherworld is getting quite a bit of re-work to bring it up to the level of quality Re-Logic is comfortable with. This means that the game will come out much later than they initially anticipated but it should be that much better for it!
"To keep it short and simple, at the beginning of this year, we undertook a full in-depth review of the project versus our standards, expectations, and vision for the game. It was pretty clear to us at the time that Otherworld needed quite a bit of work - and even a good bit of rework - in a number of areas in order to hit that mark.
We then spent some time in detailed discussion among ourselves and also with Engine Software in regards to how best to get things to where they need to be. We then made a list of requested reforms and changes and such. As a part of this, the project team at Engine now has a new lead designer and art lead along with other changes made to better align to our vision for the game. On top of that, our two teams have laid out clearly what needs to be done and are pushing forward executing towards that roadmap to deliver the game we expect - and our fans deserve - as soon as possible."
The game is getting some pretty sizable visual updates as well as gameplay enhancements and more. This should make for a more polished game at launch, something most fans will appreciate. The nice part here is that there was no promised deadline or early access fans to annoy, just the game getting the attention it deserves.
"We will work hand in hand with Engine to keep up the momentum on the work and rework in the weeks and months to come. We are confident in this new approach - but rest assured that we will remain closely involved and will make sure that Terraria: Otherworld gets finished in a way that will be worthy of the Terraria name.
We don't have a date to give you - our focus is on getting the game done right first and foremost. That said, expect it to be a while still - there is a lot of work to get done and done right. As we know more, we will share it - so expect a return of spoilers (though maybe not every few days as before ;) )."

Thanks for the update. I've been checking up often on the progress of this game. I'm not a big fan of waiting for a game I want to come out, but I do enjoy the fact that developers make sure that they deliver a polished game.

Starbound recently came out of early access with version 1.0. However, I got in to it before that. I actually played through it a few times. I clocked over 200 hours before 1.0 was released. I've been playing it a lot since then, I even got my son a copy. As I was playing recently, I was thinking about the things I remember about the various development stages that I played through. I thought I'd touch up on them here.
Races: I remember I started out playing a character of the Avian race. I liked using the Avianās Tomahawk or Axe, but now I donāt like those weapons. When you click the left mouse button to attack, it raises your characterās hand(s) to attack. Letting go of the mouse button then lowers the hand(s) for the attack. So, holding down the button is the most effective way to get an attack at full strength. Swords and spears donāt act this way.
Speaking of the gameās races, I remember when the Novakids were added and I decided to try one. Since then, I havenāt switched. I think before 1.0 they specialized in guns, which are pretty effective ranged weapons, as expected. However, this time Iāve found my weapon of choice to be a spear or sword.
Quests, Missions, and Fuel: I remember when Starbound's introduction was much different. I can't recall if Core Fragments were necessary to get your ship repaired right away. However, this is definitely different now as that's not even your first quest. So, I remember when Starbound didn't have a story introduction, in fact there was no story to it before 1.0, as far as I recall. Sure there were things you could read in the Codices, but nothing like it is now where you start out by waking up and having to attend your graduation. This is the new beginning and introduction to the game's basic mechanics. Once you get through that and on to your first planet, then youāre told that you need to collect Core Fragments. I seem to recall them located strictly far beneath the planetās surface, at the core. However, Iāve noticed that you can easily find enough of them boxes in a nearby mine shaft. It used to be that you took them straight back to your ship, or so I seem to recall, but now you actually have to find a Gate on the planetās surface and power it up with them. Once you do that, you can go to the Outpost where you end up talking to the main NPC in the game (the one other than S.A.I.L.).
I remember when the Outposts were added. I remember when they were there, but there was nothing there and teleporting on to their surface meant instant death. I remember later that other NPCs were added with their own shops. I also remember when NPC Quests were added to the game. There werenāt very many of them to begin with, but now they are very random and quite abundant. Not many of the NPCs at the Outpost have given me quests. A lot of the quests Iāve received have come from village NPCs that you may find on planets you explore. I am currently on a Jungle planet where I got tons of Quests from the local Glitch villagers. I havenāt even completed all of them and very many of them were similar. There is an Ancient Avian Tomb nearby and many of the NPCs requested that I go find a friend of theirs, save them from danger, and return them to safety. I eventually got tired of doing this. Some of them also wanted me to deliver something to another NPC, some times a note, then a reply, and some times materials. Some times I had to use materials given to me, or that I found, to create new materials. For instance, some of them asked me to locate some iron ore and then I had to smelt them into bars.
I remember when the Erchius Mining Facility became the first āquesting mission.ā It was tough and it still is, but it is now the first main mission you have to go on because you need to defeat the Erchius Horror to obtain Erchius Crystals, which enable you to repair your shipās FTL drive. Reaching other planets brings me to another memory and that is when you could use coal and oil for fuel. That doesnāt seem to be the case anymore. Now you can either buy Erchius Liquid from the gas station on the Outpost or visit a moon and harvest Erchius Crystals. However, once you do (the latter), S.A.I.L. will tell you that harvesting this material will cause some creatures to come after you. Sure enough, thereās some kind of status effect you get when you start harvesting this material and you may eventually notice a big purple ghost coming your way. I tried to hit it with something, but it seems to be invincible.
Sandbox, Ship Upgrades, and Hunger: Starbound is a sandbox game, kind of like Terraria. You can build houses and all kinds of things, but before 1.0 I never really had a reason to build on a planet. I crafted all the kinds of crafting tables/work benches I needed and placed them on my ship. When I ran out of room, I was able to upgrade my ship easily enough.
It is now much more complicated than that. In order to upgrade your ship, you need colonists. In order to get them, you have to buy a Colony Deed, which you place on a wall inside a house-like structure, just like you do when creating something for NPCs in Terraria. Once certain criteria are met and your Colony Deed is hanging on a wall, an NPC will teleport in. Then, you have to do quests for them, which will randomly generate. After doing some quests (Iām not sure how many it takes), theyāll decided to join your crew. Once you have enough crew members, you can upgrade your ship. You will find Ship Upgrades in your exploration and adventure, but you wonāt be able to use them unless you have enough crew members.
This some what complicated system pretty much makes building on a planet imperative. However, you can also now buy Teleporters, which will let you teleport any where (even under ground). Although, you do need to obtain Teleporter Cores in order to buy a Teleporter. You can destroy a Teleporter, but you wonāt get the Core back from it.
I remember, when I first played the game that hunger was a part of the game that was later removed. Itās been added back into the game in 1.0. However, during character creation, you can choose the āCasualā level of difficulty which removes hunger and the death penalty. The reason I mention this here is that I now have another reason to build on a planet, so that I can do some farming. Farming has been expanded as well. Not only are there a good variety of crops that you can grow, but there is also livestock you can raise, too, although I havenāt yet explored that part of it.
The gameās default difficulty level is called āSurvivalā which means there is hunger and a death penalty. While I donāt mind hunger, I do dislike the death penalty. I donāt mind so much that I lose 30% of my pixels (currency) upon death, but I also drop almost all of my items. This means Iāve often died and then had to try to locate where I died so that I could collect what I dropped. I didnāt like this part in Minecraft either, but luckily I could disable that with a command. In Starbound you can either play on āCasualā difficulty to avoid this or install one of the mods, which is very tempting.
Progression (The reason thereās a story?): Progression has changed a few times since I first played the game. I remember when it was relatively easy to transcend through the various tiers of weapons and armor by obtaining ore thatās found only in certain kinds of star systems. While it wasnāt necessarily easy to do so, I spent very little time in each tier. That became the only reason to visit certain planets. Iād also like to mention that Tungsten Ore has replaced Steel, although Durasteel is still there. Now, I think the story could have possibly been added to give reason to progress through the tiers and reason to visit various star systems. Instead of obtaining Tier 1 and moving to Tier 2, you have a variety of things to do make it to Tier 2 and then more for the next and so on. While I found the gameās new introduction to be quite unoriginal, I think itās still cool and gives the game a bit more depth that it needed. Although, (as I mentioned in a comment on another Starbound post here), Terraria doesnāt have a story and is perfect just the way it is. Although, another similarity the two games share is a variety of bosses. I remember originally fighting a few of them throughout this game before 1.0, but now there seems to be more of them.
The Hotbar and Inventory: The Hotbar/Toolbar has changed. It no longer contains individually separated slots. The slots are now smaller (I think) and are in pairs. Each slot represents a left-click or right-click, a left hand or right hand. Many things, especially weapons, use both hands and therefore both slots that make up a pair. However, some things are one-handed, which means the other handās slot is available for something else such as a shield or flashlight. You can also lock and unlock the hotbar so that items do or donāt automatically go into it when you pick them up. You can also switch between two hotbars. Iām not really sure how I feel about the new hotbar, I guess I have mixed feelings about it.
Inventory is nicely organized now, though. There are a few tabs for blocks, food, etc.
Tech and Matter Manipulator Upgrades: If youāve played Starbound before, you know there are Techs in the game which give you different abilities, like being able to dash on ground or in the air. Throughout the game you will find Tech Cards which can be collected and then used at the Outpost to unlock new abilities.
Upgrading the Matter Manipulator works in much the same way, too. You collect upgrades for it and when you have enough of them you can select which upgrades you want, like the ability to paint, collect liquid, or increase itās distance and power. Upgrades to Tech and the Matter Manipulator seem to be easy enough to obtain.
Pets: There are also two kinds of pets. One never leaves your ship and each animal is different for each race. These seem to be mostly cosmetic, although they have their own random personalities (likes and dislikes) and you can feed them and do other things with them, too, I think.
The other kind are the monsters you can catch using Capture Pods. This works a lot like Pokemon in which you get a monster below half health, throw a Capture Pod at it and itās yours. Toss the Capture Pod out in the open and it comes out and fights with you. Unfortunately this āpetā can die, but you can revive it and donāt have to go capture a new one. However, in order to do so you will need a Pet Station which can only be crafted after you upgrade your initial Inventorās Table (or whatever itās called) twice. I captured a Moontant from the Erchius Mining Facility, but it died and I wasnāt able to restore it to health again for quite some time later in the game.
Oh and speaking of pets that can fight along with you, your crew members can do the same. I now have one pet and two crew members who follow me. I think thereās a limit on how many followers you can have at a time though, Iām not completely sure. If your crew member dies, it will teleport back to your ship. You can teleport back to the ship to get them to follow you again. You can also hover over them with your mouse and press the āEā key to get them to stay or follow. This became kind of problematic for me as āEā is used to interact with everything else and I sometimes accidentally told a crew member to āstay.ā
Anyway, this is plenty of text to read, these are just a few thoughts I would share about 1.0. I may add more things in later. If you would like to talk about Starbound, feel free to do so here or on one of our other Cheerful Ghost posts!

For the Marines, each game is a nail biter as instead of dungeon exploration and the collection of loot your goal is to escape Mars base alive. Today Fantasy Flight dropped news that they are rebooting Doom the Board Game with an all new design to pair up to the recent Doom remake.
"Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce the upcoming release of DOOM: The Board Game, a completely redesigned tactical combat experience for two to five players based on Bethesdaās blockbuster video game, DOOM.
Glory Kill your way to victory as one of the United Aerospace Corporationās elite marines or grab control of the legions of demons threatening to take over the complex. Each side of DOOMās asymmetrical gameplay introduces an entirely unique way to play, whether you're struggling to save Mars from being overrun by Hellās most merciless demons or fighting to crush each marine and conquer the planet once and for all. You and up to four friends will play through a series of missions, the marines attempting to achieve a variety of objectives and the invader orchestrating a barrage of savage demon attacks against them. While the marines can respawn after death, they can only do so a set number of times before the demons claim victory over the mission, threatening not only the UACās operation, but the survival of humanity as a whole."
It seems the biggest difference is the new Doom game is less survival run and gun and more of a tactical objective based game.
"DOOM provides two operations of six missions each for your invader and marines to battle through. Every mission takes place on a unique map and presents a different set of objectives and threat levels. The objective cards designated for each mission describe the victory conditions for both the team of marines and the invader, in addition to all associated special rules. The marineās objectives can vary from securing the battle area to collecting valuable assets, while the invader has just one goalāto kill the marinesā¦repeatedly. "
I'm very excited to know more about this new version as the original has a very special place in my heart and I hope this new game captures how great the original one was.

If you've been following the site for a while now you know we talked about some of the things we all wanted to see in the NX back in March. In my article I said i'd love it if Nintendo offered a Netflix styled game download system and that the NX should be some mobile experience you could fling to your TV. Looks like we might be getting something better than I envisioned and I am very interested to know more about it.
As with most things Nintendo, this device will be tied into their ecosystem and it seems that the rumors explicitly strike out that this is an open Android system. Still, this seems to at first glace, harmonize Nintendo's future in that if the NX will be their console and handheld offering this makes it a nice system to purchase if you want to experience all of the new Nintendo games.
Until Nintendo talks more about the NX these are unconfirmed rumors but they all seem to point to a very interesting system I want to know a lot more about. What do you think, does this seem like something you might be interested in getting and does this leaked design seem like a good way to play games?

I saw two articles about this a couple days ago. I haven't dived into the NX rumors, waiting for something to be confirmed. However, it seems that a lot of video game rumors have actually been based on fact in recent times. Still, I don't know how I feel about it. I'm most interested in seeing if the new Zelda games performs better on it than on the Wii U. That's where my initial interest in it begins. We'll see.

I wonder if it will work with the wiimote? Also, it will be a definite buy if it has a subscription service for their past catalog.

It seems most of the rumors point to some kind of mobile system you can attach to your TV so whereas this may not be 100% they seem to point to a system very similar to this, if not this one.

I agree. I want to pick this up and my hope is the re-release Wii U games on this so it's more of a insta-buy for me. I really dig the Wii U and it has a nice catalog of games so if they can port lots of those games to the NX, it seems like a no-brainer. To me anyway.
> I wonder if it will work with the wiimote? Also, it will be a definite buy if it has a subscription service for their past catalog.
If Nintendo wants to release Wii games on the NX, it will need to. That said, if it has bluetooth it can. You don't need a physical connection to the console for the Wii sensor bar, it just needs to be powered.

Yeah, I need to try it. I hear it is pretty resource intensive though, so I am not sure my rig can survive it. I am at the bottom of the high end rating in the SteamVR perf test.
Interesting. What video card do you have on your PC?

I have a 780ti. I ran Trials last night in low settings. The only reasons to try it out is because Star Wars and Free. It is a demo through and through. Not much to do, other than look at star wars stuff and swing a lightsaber. That said, seeing r2-d2 and the millennium falcon was kind of cool (although at the low setting, the textures looked like they were straight out of the N64). Oh, and it requires a 2.4m x 2.4m minimum room setup. I have 2.1m x 2.1m. I ran it despite the warnings, and it was fine. I may try it out on medium setting and see if it makes me vomit, or if frame rate is fine.

The tiny console wars are upon us! In October, a mini-Genesis with 80 built-in games will be arriving.

So lets talk about those games! 80 of them! That's 50 more than the mini NES! Well, yes it is. But you'll only care about 40 of them probably. The remaining 40 are things like Chess, Solitaire, Sudoku, things like that. But still, 40 Genesis classics and 40 puzzle/strategy games isn't bad.
Downside-- no HDMI. That's not a dealbreaker, but the mini NES could (one hopes) scale well to 1080p. This one will be stuck at 480 over composite cables. I play retro games over composite all the time and it's not bad, but it's obvious these were made for the old TVs we used to use.
Tricky! Composite, low-fi, but expandable, or high-def retro? What do you play on that still has composite connections? Are you rocking a tube TV?! Double retro! Seriously, I was considering finding a flat-screen tube to play SNES and PS1 games on. Those were the days...

Looks very similar to what I bought years ago. I honestly barely used it. Maybe I should find it and hook it up again. I never experienced the Mega Drive part of Sega, only the Genesis. I'd also like to note that TONS of Sega (Genesis and Mega Drive) games are available on Steam. I saw one package for over $100.
I love that it can play old Genesis carts, but there aren't any games preloaded that I'm really interested in. A play through of Altered Beast would probably be fun, and the Mortal Kombat games are cool, but this lineup has nothing that could stand up to the NES game lineup.

I have two HDTVs, one of them is a 720p from a few years back, the other is a 1080p 3D super-awesome smart TV thing. Both of them have composite connectors! You may not realize that you have them, sometimes the component connectors do double duty.
It feels like putting easy cheese on a meal at a swanky restaurant, but it still works pretty well to play the NES on a 1080p TV with composite.
Greg MegaDrive IS Genesis. They just renamed it for America for some reason. So the same hardware in Europe was called the MegaDrive. You might be thinking of the Master System, which came before the Megadrive/Genesis.

That's good to know about the composite and component connectors.
Master System, Megadrive, Genesis, wow that's a lot. All I know is I only had experience with the Genesis and Game Gear. My cousin and friends owned a Genesis, while I owned a Game Gear.

It's only two though! The master system came out around the time of the NES. It's in that generation. Then the MegaDrive came out in the next generation.
I think there was a trademark issue so in North America they had to call it Genesis instead.

Maybe I've fallen for the trick, but just seeing it in action makes it feel that much more tempting. I'm not sure if I'll get it, but I haven't ruled it out completely. It would be awesome if it wasn't strictly limited to those 30 games. It would be sweet if it included the entire NES library (although probably more expensive).

They'd have to clear more game licenses which would bump the price a bit. Nintendo owns quite a bit of those games, but not all of them.

I'm not sure what other games I'd love to see on it, but I agree that DuckTales should be one of them. (BTW I wrote "Duck Tales" in a previous post and the Internet shows it's name as "DuckTales," so that's why I've written it that way here.)
Warrio's Woods would've been great also (but the SNES version looked better :) ) ... Still $60 for 30 games on a little console with a re-usable controller... that's awesome for me. I'll get one and a second controller launch day and play with the kids :)

Have you always wanted to have a party in Terraria? Well now the Party Girl or certain other NPC's will throw one under certain conditions you set up. As with any new feature, they don't say what they conditions are but I imagine it will come to the wiki at some point.
When we run our next server we should throw a party.

I'm not really interested in the party update, but I really like this picture! I also love the "when we run our next server" part of your post here! I miss playing Terraria with my fellow Cheerful Ghosts. Our next server should definitely be on Expert Mode. I'm confident that we can handle it together.

Yeah, expert mode isn't a bad idea BUT the downside is it discourages a bit more casual play as it's hard as hell. PLUS if people come in after we've played for a bit, they will get steamrolled by hardmode.
That said, expert would be fun!

Well me and Vinny together have done pretty well on our Expert mode world, surprisingly. I've enjoyed almost all of the Expert mode rewards, but not all of them. The Slime mount most definitely helps against Eater of Worlds, although that's not the Expert mode reward. That one makes slimes friendly, even if you attack them. The Bee Gun is a great weapon against Skeletron, although again not an Expert mode reward. I've defeated some of the Expert mode bosses on my own, but not all of them. We haven't gone up against the Wall of Flesh yet, but they're definitely tougher. I think we were only able to defeat King Slime because we had a nearby hole in a hill where he couldn't get to us, but we could hit him with boomerangs, although his slime companions came after us. Still, with two or three of us with the right gear and the arena we usually use, we should be good. But yeah, it would be more difficult for casual play and those who join in late or don't play much, I can see that as an issue.

Oh and since we're talking about our Terraria server again, I have to ask, "when?" LOL

I'm not sure. My first off the cuff thought is sometime this holiday. That seems to be a good time for folk, but i'll defer to Travis here.
The ACTUAL andrew spinks was bad at making the update with the solar eclipse because I've waited 18 days (on console terraria) and still NO SOLAR ECLIPSE

terraian_warrior: The console versions and updates are handled by an outside company so Andrew isn't directly involved with that. Plus, I think he is working on Terraria 2 or another Re-Logic game and isn't on Terraria proper anymore.

An interesting environmental change. I wonder if they'll just be purely cosmetic or if perhaps they'll give a debuff. It does snow instead of rain in the snowy biomes, but a blizzard would be cool. Maybe they could add hurricanes for the beaches, too.
I know the next update has to do with the underground desert as can be seen in one of her other tweets, perhaps even on the forum and wiki.

Hurricanes at the beaches? How bout a TSUNAMI? Not that I spend a lot of time on the beach in Terraria as its so far over to the side.

Haha @TheFluBomb tweeted: @Cennxx @Terraria_Logic is this gonna be the "Stuff Blowing In Your Face" update? They should give the other biomes similar treatment. Equality for all! It'd be cool if they did some leaves for the forest biome, maybe that could just be a Fall holiday environmental event.

Stuff blowing in your face update? Ha. I'm ready.
Still impressed how much work this game has received post launch. I wonder when they will consider it "done?" I'm not complaining, it's just that all this new content is usually saved for the sequel.

I wonder if it throws you above the world like the one in Super Mario Bros. 3?
But damn, those particle effects! With these new weather effects and the stuff surrounding the Moon Lord, they've kinda gone up a generation or two in graphic styles. It almost looks a little weird to see that high def (for lack of a better word) sandnado in the pixelated world.

Yeah it all looks good, but I agree with Jon's comment after mine. I was going to say that all this is nice, but I'm more eagerly awaiting Terraria: Otherworld and Terraria 2. I want more Terraria damn it and other games just aren't up to par. LOL

Thanks for the update. I've been checking up often on the progress of this game. I'm not a big fan of waiting for a game I want to come out, but I do enjoy the fact that developers make sure that they deliver a polished game.
